From the CEO

Brent EslerChief Executive

Late in October, Farmlands held a sales and suppliers awards event in Christchurch. These events were common to both CRT and Farmlands prior to merging but this was the first time the event has been nationwide.

The objective of the event was to further develop the national team culture, one with a theme of “One Team, One Vision”. Management and field staff from our locations were able to workshop on a variety of issues – all with a common theme of how to further improve our service to you, our shareholders. We also recognised the performance leaders within the business, along with supplier partners to the various divisions of our business in an awards presentation. A highlight was an address by Sir Graham Henry, a man who knows something about building a winning national team. Appropriately his address was two years to the day that the All Blacks won the Rugby World Cup. Congratulations to our Alexandra and Opunake stores for winning the top awards for their respective islands, as well as Bruce Davis (Fuel), Chris Abbott and Kerin Pitkethley (Real Estate – Darfield) and the Timaru Real Estate office for their achievements. DuPont took out the overall rural supplies award and FMG the Card Partner of the year. As we look back from the last month of 2013, it has been a year of immense change, which we are confident will significantly benefit all shareholders in the future. We look forward to our first full year as Farmlands Co-operative Society Limited with great optimism. It is truly an exciting time to be a member of this co-operative, as we continue to make the most of our scale to increase our buying power and our operating efficiency, with the ultimate goal of adding to the profitability of our shareholders. The first quarter of the year to 30th September has started positively after the rather flat 2013 year, to achieve an 11 percent gain in turnover. Wherever you plan to spend your Christmas and New Year, whether on the farm, on the beach or across the waters, the Farmlands team wishes you a fantastic holiday season and hope you travel safe. Here’s to 2014.

EVENTS

Held on the weekend of January 25th and 26th, the event celebrates the machinery of yesterday, with a focus on tractors and old Dodge vehicles for the 2014 edition. Crank-Up secretary, Julie-Anne Clark believes the club hosts the only annual event of its kind in New Zealand. “The feature this year is a celebration of 110 years of tractors in New Zealand, along with 100 years of Dodge vehicles,” she says. “This year we have a whole new layout and format of the grounds – with vintage tractors, implements, trucks, crafts for the ladies and children’s entertainment.” The event is always popular, with exhibits being entered right up until parade day. Along with daily parades, starting with a street parade on the Friday evening, there is vintage shearing, marching, an old timer’s band and even a pipe band. “In our display shed we have plenty of vintage items – even an old barber’s chair,” Julie-Anne says. “Basically, anything that reminds you of the bygone days, we might have it.” Julie-Anne estimates close to 6000 people come through the gates on any given year, with people travelling from as far away as the United Kingdom and the United States to attend. She says the thing is the travellers keep coming back – proving the event’s enduring quality. “The highlight is always people showing up with their exhibits and just enjoying their weekend,” Julie-Anne says. “Each year we have a special guest and this year it’s Levi, the Mitre 10 Mega Man. Our previous guests have included Nathan Cohen, Sir Edmund Hillary, Sir Colin Meads and the Evers-Swindell twins (Caroline Meyer and Georgina Earl).”- Edendale Vintage Machinery Club’s 27th annual Crank Up Weekend. For more information, visit www.edendalevmc.com

The event, with CRT Farmlands and FMG as major sponsors, celebrated contributions to the Merino wool industry in the Otago region. It also had the aim of helping those in need – this year, a charity auction was held, with proceeds going to the Child Cancer Foundation. During the past six years, the Otago Merino group has raised more than $200,000 for the Foundation. More than 250 people attended the dinner and awards at the Skyline Restaurant, on top of the Gondola. It was MC’d by the President of the Otago Merino Association, Richard Subtle from Omarama Station.

Event continues to be fine vintage Queenstown welcomes wool awardsSouthland will be cranking next month for Edendale Vintage Machinery Club’s 27th Annual Crank-Up Weekend.

The finest in Merino fleece was celebrated at the Otago Merino Excellence Awards, held recently in Queenstown.

Also attending was Phil Cranswick from NZWTA, whose father, Tom Cranswick was a founding member of Farmlands. With Glen Peedie of PWA and Associates as auctioneer and CRT Farmlands Otago Regional Manager Andy Kelleher as spotter, the auction drew in some big numbers for the deserving cause. A $2000 voucher donated by CRT Farmlands sold for $2100, a magnum of ‘Two Paddocks’ pinot noir sold for $700 (and will be re-offered for charity) and All Black, Andrew Hore picked up a painting of rural Otago for $1400. The CRT Farmlands sponsored Commercial Clip of the Year section was won by Craighurst Station, which received the award from CRT Farmlands Otago Field Manager, Rod Hancock. CRT Farmlands are proud and privileged to be involved with such a positive and charitable group of farmers.

SPECIAL FEATURE

Summer is here, which for many shareholders signals the time of year to enjoy

a nice cold ale (or two) in the sun. What you may not realise is there is a good chance one of your fellow shareholders is contributing to

your favourite Kiwi brew. Doug and Gabriella Michael beside their malt roaster.

SPECIAL FEATURE

Or, if you’re a particular group of mates from the Nelson area – you brew your own. Colin Oldham and Peter Lines are hop farmers, supplying hops to anyone and everyone in need of the beer essentials. However, along with friend Ian Parkes, a discussion over a few brews turned into their very own brewery. Totara Brewing Company is now available on tap at 10 establishments in the Nelson area, as well as the occasional party keg, man-shed speak-easy and an annual trip to Seafest. Third generation hop farmer Colin, from the Tadmor Valley, says the three-year-old company came from humble beginnings.

“We heard about some brewing equipment becoming available, so we thought we’d give it a go,” Colin explains. “We thought we were buying a brewery but it turns out we only bought half a brewery set up. We bought the rest of the bits and pieces and set it up at Peter’s farm.” Totara has three main brews – Drover’s Draught, After Dark and Totara Gold, a lager. While the three brands make the bulk of their orders, Peter says it is the seasonable beer they get the most excited about. “The thing is, we all like beer but being hop growers we are interested in the smells and seeing the different flavours,” Peter says.

“From our green hops we have seasonal beers,” Colin explains. “Going straight from the hop picking machine and straight into our beer gives it a completely different taste.” Totara is currently brewing close to 700 litres a week, although Peter, who also has his own grape juice business, says that can occasionally get up to the 1000 litre mark. So far, the trio – along with business partners Ross Ford and Shane Wakelin – have brewed 250,000 litres at Totara. “We had no serious business plan – apart from a verbal plan, which was not using any artificial ingredients,” Colin says. “In our beer, it’s all about the hops and right now, we have got a new brew underway with a hop sourced from Kahurangi Forest – near the old gold mines.” As the business grows, so too does the juggling act. Colin describes Peter as “the brewing whizz”, while Peter describes Ian as “the

chief taster”. Between administration, sales and brewing, it’s hard to believe they are hop and sheep farmers first and foremost. “All of us have had home brew kits in our sheds. It was a lot more work than we thought – it sounded easy at the time,” Colin says, with a laugh. Peter adds, “We are hop growers making beer. It’s still at the not too bad stage - we juggle it around farm work.” There are more than just hops required to make a top drop. Shareholders Doug and Gabriella Michael, owners and operators of Dunsandel’s Gladfield Malt, are on speed dial for a number of breweries. A fifth generation barley grower, Doug and Gabriella decided to diversify their barley exploits by malting and eventually roasting their own barley onsite. Now with 165 hectares of barley and more supplies coming in from local The Totara Brewing Company stall at Seafest.

Totara's range of brews are popping up in some interesting places.

Page 13: Agline December 2013

growers to feed demand, Gladfield has 180 clients scattered throughout New Zealand and Australia. “We’re now making 18 types of malt, targeting the New Zealand and Australia markets. They’re wanting a top product and we’re the only ones doing this type of work in New Zealand, specifically for the craft beer market,” Doug says. The couple started small, with only themselves as staff. Demand and expansion means Gladfield now has five full time staff, one part timer and a salesperson in Australia. That expansion took a lot of Kiwi ingenuity. Doug says the majority of the plant was built by them, with assistance from a local engineering firm. But his pride and joy, the LPG-powered malt roaster, is what sets Gladfield apart. “The roaster was made to specification in the Czech Republic,” Doug explains. “They only sell a handful around the world every few years – and now we’re able to make a product here that’s second to none.” As Doug reels off the names of some of the malts … smoked, Vienna, even wheat, the potential of roasting the malt gets him animated. “Coloured malt makes up 10 to 15 percent of the grist in beer – and now we can make our own coloured and roasted malts,” Doug explains. “Coloured malts add to the flavour and the aroma. This is the first time there’s been a roaster in New Zealand for a long, long time and customers are really excited about 100 percent New Zealand coloured malt being available again.”

On the side of the roaster is the name “Gabriella” – a tribute to someone who has been “an inspiration in business”. Competing against a multinational malting business in Marton, which supplies the bigger breweries, does not bother Doug. He’s too focused on the factors at home. The first Christchurch earthquake caused considerable damage – but now that the business has grown past that stage, he turns his focus to the fields. “Half of the farm is in winter barley, sown in early May and will be harvested late December/early January. Spring barley goes in mid-August/early September. The reason for splitting it 50/50 is to reduce the risk at harvest time,” he says. Hail, flood, drought and fire are always a concern. But like his brew-buddies further north, Doug is looking forward to the next brew, rather than the last batch.

CO-OPERATIVE NEWS

Farmlands and Meridian support future leadersTwo of New Zealand’s most influential rural prizes, the Kellogg Rural Leaders Programme and the Nuffield Scholarship, are now working together to create New Zealand’s next generation of rural leaders. And two other businesses are working together to support them – Farmlands and major Card Partner, Meridian. .While the two scholarships will continue to operate as separate entities - maintaining their existing brands and alumni – they will now share a full time General Manager. The result is a rural leadership consortium, designed to utilise combined resources to get the best results.

There are also more than 150 Nuffield Scholar alumni in New Zealand. One of those Nuffield alumni is Meridian National Agribusiness Manager, Natasha King, who says being a Nuffield Scholar has benefitted her professionally as well as personally. “It has allowed me to experience amazing places, meet some extremely interesting people and given me the confidence to pursue more leadership opportunities,” she says. “I learnt about acceptance and tolerance of difference in global cultures, as well as the fact and pride that New Zealand is a world leader in agriculture and the benefits New Zealand farmers get from their co-operatives.” It is those benefits from co-operatives that has solidified Meridian’s partnership with Farmlands, as they work together, along with the Nuffield Farming Scholarship Trust and Lincoln University, to improve New Zealand agriculture. “We believe the entire industry benefits from improved leadership and the more opportunities our farmers and agribusiness people get, this will ensure New Zealand continues to be the world leader in agriculture.” Another Nuffield Scholar is Deputy Chairman of Farmlands, Don McFarlane. Don says when the rural co-operative society movement began in New Zealand in the 1960s, two of the developers were former Nuffield Scholars, who found out about the co-operative system from their travels to the United Kingdom. “One of the reasons I am happy Farmlands is involved in supporting both the Nuffield and

Farmlands and Meridian have chosen to team up, to actively support and sponsor both scholarships. More than 650 people have completed the Kellogg Rural Leaders Programme, which is owned and administered by Lincoln University.

Kellogg programmes is because it is really important to encourage and develop rural leadership. It is important to develop those future directors of co-operatives in New Zealand, including laying the foundations for future directorships at Farmlands,” he says. Each year, Don has visited Lincoln University with Ramsey Margolis, the Executive Director of New Zealand Co-operatives Association, to present to the next generation of Kellogg Rural Leaders. "We need new leaders in the environmental, political and commercial sectors. If we can increase the pool, the sector will be able to maintain control of its destiny and be able to grow and develop,” Don says. COMPLIANCE

Keeping children safe on farmsFarms in New Zealand are some of the most enjoyable and exciting places for children to grow up on. They are places with lots of space, fresh air and where there is no shortage of interesting things to do. The lifestyle on farms where families live, work and play can’t be replicated in the city. All of this helps children to become independent and responsible.

still developing, so they cannot rely on their perception of a situation and cannot always apply what is learned in one situation to another.

PRE-SCHOOLERSThese children are 3 – 5 years old. They’re great companions for farm employees - they are instinctive, chatty, curious and may have lots of questions. Pre schoolers will already have had a few ‘spills and thrills', which they would have learnt from because they either got hurt or got told off. At this age they will not be able to understand comparative phrases such as “too close.” They love animals and might see rams, bulls and dogs in the same way as they see pet lambs and chickens. Playing near animals, hay barns, farm machinery and farm buildings are key dangers for pre-schoolers on the farm. They want to be independent but still need adults to monitor what they do and to keep them safe.

SCHOOL CHILDRENSchool children come in all sizes, shapes, personalities and levels of maturity. They are exposed to many of the same hazards as adults but they don’t all have the capability to understand danger. School children will make poor judgements and they might want to operate machinery on their own - they will want to accept responsibilities that they are not ready for. Remember too - when city children come to visit they might not be as aware of dangers as country kids. The virtual farm on their computer is vastly different from the real thing – they’ll discover that when they land in their first cow pat. You can’t child-proof the whole farm but you can make it as safe as possible. It’s a good idea to put in place some rules for your kids. Rules set the boundaries and tend to be learned gradually through repetition and reward but never rely on rules and children’s ability to follow them to guarantee safety. With the school holidays not far away, here’s a few things that

you can do to make your farm a safer place for children:

· Do not allow children to ride as passengers on tractors, quad bikes or on the back of utes

· If it’s practicable, fence off areas such as ponds, effluent tanks and swimming pools

· Before you reverse a farm vehicle, walk around to check that no children are nearby

· Ensure ladders are inaccessible

· Make it your practice to remove keys from vehicles and never leave vehicles unattended with the motor running

· Teach children to wash their hands after touching animals

· Store agrichemicals in a locked area

· Lower front end loader equipment to the ground when not in use

· Make sure children know what to do in an emergency (and know where to go and who to call)

· Make it a rule for older children to always say where they are going and what they are doing and, most of all:

· Lead by example

No matter how much adults know about the dangers that exist on farms, never assume that children understand them. Remember, while it is important to teach children about safety you must also be responsible and provide them with a safe environment to live, play and work. Email us at [email protected] and we can send you a ‘Spot the Hazards’ worksheet that you can complete with your school children and teach them how to identify and control farm hazards.

However, because farms are a place of work and a home at the same time, children can be at risk when playing and when helping out on the farm. This means that children cannot always discern the difference between work and play or fun and danger. They need to be taught how to recognise farm hazards and how to avoid them. The most common causes of on-farm tragedies that have involved children are:

· Falling from vehicles

· Being struck by moving vehicles

· Contact with machinery

· Drowning

· Poisoning

TODDLERSBy toddlers, I am referring to children under three years old. Young toddlers have an innate tendency to put everything to their mouth, which makes them particularly susceptible to poisoning. Older toddlers are always ‘on the move’ and wanting to explore the world around them. They often run impulsively towards things without understanding the relationship to distance, speed or size. This means that they may see a vehicle approaching but would not understand how close the vehicle is. These little family members love to help and will often copy and mimic farm tasks that they have seen, however their ability to reason and use logic is still immature. Their little minds are

FARMLANDS FUEL

If you are interested in having your own bulk storage tank on-farm, or whether you would like to upgrade your existing storage tank, Farmlands Finance can assist with a 36 months, 9.99 percent per annum rate, plus establishment fee. The special rate is ongoing for any fuel storage tank arranged through Farmlands Fuel and is only available to Farmlands shareholders. For those who do not currently have fuel storage on-farm, the offer is an opportunity to add value and convenience to your business, while saving you money in the long term. Fuel storage tanks through Farmlands are robust, compliant and there are many options to suit the needs of your business. The larger the tank, the larger the savings, as less tanker visits means more money in your pocket. For shareholders who already have bulk fuel storage on-site, the offer gives an opportunity to upgrade and ensure your fuel storage is completely compliant. Whether through wear and tear, or poor construction, some storage tanks fail compliance regulations. A new, compliant storage solution not only saves money, it could save lives. Farmers have legal obligations under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) Act 1996 and the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 to provide a safe place to work, including in the relation to handling and storage of fuel on farms. Everything from location to emergency response plans needs to be considered to ensure no legal liability or potential harm. Introducing... Andrew Gowers

That question changes with every shareholder. Different shareholders have different needs, which is why Farmlands Fuel makes sure their staff can provide the best advice on bulk fuel, storage, compliance and more. As the distinctive bright green Farmlands Fuel tankers continue to deliver fuel to shareholders around the country, here is a new staff member who is able to ask you “the bulk fuel question”. Andrew Gowers is the Southern South Island Farmlands Fuel Territory Manager, covering the area south of Haast, all the way across to Balclutha. Andrew deals mainly with a farming shareholder client base but also has a loyal clientele of orchards, vineyards and commercial customers. Prior to working at Farmlands, Andrew worked for Allied Petroleum for eight years, delivering fuel to the rural client base in the Southland and West Otago areas. After a childhood growing up in Gore, Andrew’s first passion was farming. He completed the Federated Farmers Cadet Scheme after leaving school, before turning to dairy farming. Following his OE, Andrew returned to New Zealand to drive trucks for Fonterra and Allied Petroleum. Andrew has been with the Farmlands Fuel team for a close to two months now and is enjoying the team environment. “No two days are the same and you have to be very flexible within this role, visiting both existing and potential clients,” he says.

“Working alongside our Fuel Tanker Drivers, Call Centre staff and Farmlands TFOs is all part of a day’s work.” Andrew enjoys the travelling aspect of the job, meeting all the different shareholders, as well as the challenges being a Fuel Territory Manager provides. Away from work, Andrew is married to wife Gail and has two children, Amber (10) and Mitchell (8). In his spare time, he likes to work on the old GT Falcon he has tucked away as a restoration project. Like all of our Fuel Territory Managers, Andrew is part of the community he helps with their bulk fuel needs. If you want to ask Andrew the bulk fuel question, give him a call on 027 705 5931.

LIVESTOCK

There was a large gallery of local and South Island buyers, resulting in a strong market for an impressive yarding of two year old and yearling, traditional and exotic cross beef cattle at the first CRT Farmlands Livestock Spring Cattle Sale, held at the Waipiata Saleyards on 17th October 2013.

Waipiata Spring Sale

Upcoming SalesOn-farm lamb sale to be held on Wednesday 15th January 2014, for T D and J M Wilson, Clinton.

CRT Farmlands Livestock Cattle Sales

Two year steers sold between $1,000 to $1,260 (450-530kg), or $2.30 to $2.45/kg live weight.

The two year heifers averaged $900 (430-425kg), or $2.10 to $2.15/kg

Yearling steers ranged from $640 to $960 (240-280kg), made $2.70 to $2.75/kg live weight and 315-360kg steers made $2.60 to $2.66/kg

Yearling heifers made $2.30 per kg live weight (230-270kg) and up to $2.60/kg for the lighter ones.

The annual spring cattle sale was recently held at Charlton Saleyards in Gore, with 400 beef and beef cross cattle. There was a good turnout of people during the day, which made the sale go well.

Charlton Cattle SaleRising two year old steers sold well. Close to 100 in that bracket averaged the $2.20/kg margin, with the rising two year old heifers selling pretty well at an average of $2.00/kg.

Moving onto the yearlings, we had a good line up of steers and heifers too.

Yearling steers sold well, at an average of $2.50/kg and the yearling heifers made around the $2.00/kg rate.

The cattle were well drafted and in good order, which reflected in the process paid.

There will also be weekly sales at Lorneville and Charlton Saleyards.

NUTRITION

Feeding palm kernelPalm kernel expeller meal (PKE) is a high fibre (around 70 percent NDF), mid-protein (14-17 percent CP), mid-energy (10.5-11.5 MJ ME/kg DM) by-product feed, which lacks the high starch levels found in grains and complexity of compound feeds.

PKE is a simple, relatively safe feed for farmers that do not have an in-shed feeding system, or those who want to increase cow condition at the end of lactation, increase milk production or fill a feed gap where pasture quality or quantity is limiting. PKE is a dry, gritty meal with a soapy smell. It has a low palatability initially but will be more appealing when cows are accustomed to it. PKE is most widely used as a forage extender, to help manage grazing residuals when pasture growth is lagging behind demand. If used to fill a feed deficit e.g. during a drought, cows can eat up to 6kg DM/day provided they have at least 50 percent of their diet as long forage, such as pasture or silage. As a source of digestible fibre and fat, PKE at limited levels can also have a place in the diet of higher yielding cows and compound feeds, to complement high starch rations. PKE can be fed in the dairy shed but intakes can be low and silos should have a steep cone. Long trailers have become popular for feeding out PKE. A minimum 10 percent wastage occurs during storage and feeding out when feeding in trailers, more if they are over filled and wastage can be as high as 25-40 percent when fed with silage on the ground. Feed pads offer the opportunity to reduce waste and reduce pasture damage.

NUTRITIONAL VALUE

PKE has tended to be attractively priced per kg DM, compared to purchased conserved forages and has been popular amongst farmers who ascribe to the rule that supplements must not cost more than five percent of the value of a milk solid. Its low price on world markets has reflected its nutritional value as a forage replacer, rather than a high energy concentrate like grain. Buying decisions need to be based not just on the cost of dry matter but the cost delivered down the animals throat, after taking losses and feed-out costs into account; the metabolisable energy (ME) delivered in the dry matter, the source of that ME and how it might affect fertility and performance. The majority of the energy in PKE comes from digestible fibre and protein - about one third of the energy comes from fat, which is typically 8 percent but at times has fallen closer to 5 percent of the DM, which would be reflected in a lower ME. Importers literature states typical ME values for PKE ranging from 11.7 to 13.6 MJ ME/kg DM. Laboratories have difficulty giving accurate ME values for PKE samples, because they are unable to calibrate their laboratory results to animal trials. When used in Reliance products such as Dairy Summer Milk, PKE is given an ME of 11.1 so that shareholders can be

confident we are not overstating the feed value of our finished feeds. The quality of the protein in PKE and high fibre level tends to preclude its use with calves under nine months of age. PKE’s low calcium (0.25 percent) and sodium (0.02 percent) content should be supplemented, especially if feeding at higher rates. The copper level in PKE (typically about 20-28mg/kg DM

The adage “everything in moderation” is probably applicable to PKE, which offers benefits if used with care but is not an irreplaceable saviour.

compared to 10mg/kg in barley) limits its use in sheep diets and needs to be considered when feeding at higher rates to cattle. Unscreened PKE sources may contain relatively large shell fragments that can puncture cattle hooves and may increase the incidence or severity of lameness and be more abrasive to the gastro intestinal tract.

PROS FOR PKE CONS AGAINST PKE

Low price has encouraged many farmers into supplementary feeding

Widespread use without further processing exposes New Zealand to potential bio-security risks, compared to processed compound feeds or home-grown grains and silages

Competitive price per kg DMEconomic return limited by ME level, source of that ME, higher substitution rate and effect on milk fat, rather than milk protein production, compared to grains

Relatively low cost of entry for equipment if stored on the ground and fed out in trailers

Ongoing labour and machinery costs, pasture damage and wastage add to the cost of a trailer system, PKE must be stored dry to reduce risk of moulds

Can be contracted forward to removeuncertainty and aid budgeting

Imported so stocks may run out for spot market at times of greatest demand

High fibre (about 70% NDF) content makes it safe for free access feeding

High fibre content limits dry matter intake and increases pasture substitution

Low starch (typically <5%) and sugar (<3%) level eliminates risk of acidosis

Low starch level will not support milk protein production

Higher crude protein level (14-17%) than grains can be useful during a drought

Cows on predominantly pasture may not need additional protein and will expend energy getting rid of it

Taste and texture reduces risk of gorging by some cows Taste and texture limits intake in dairy sheds and for calves

Copper level helps supplement needs of cattle

Copper level limits feeding rates to sheep and needs to be considered when feeding cattle at high levels

Summer supplementary feedingThe pressure will be on this summer to make the most of early strong milk production, to capitalise on the forecasted high milk payout. Annual milk production is a marathon rather than a sprint. Many dairy farmers will be looking more closely than usual at their milk production curves to see where gains can be made and falls avoided, so that early gains are not squandered and production and financial targets are reached.

A key requirement for commercial success is to identify the limiting factor for each herd and supply what is required in a timely manner, with the least possible cost and effort. Energy is typically the first limiting factor for milk production - due to the quality or quantity of the pasture available (possibly compounded by reduced appetite from heat stress). But a lack of protein (especially on dryland farms or where low protein silage is being fed), too much fibre (due to grass becoming reproductive) or too little fibre (as can occur when a flush of grass from rains follows a dry spell) should also be considered over the summer, if production is falling faster than is desired. During a hot summer, even providing access to something as simple as salt can make a huge difference. Unfortunately, every growing season seems more and more unpredictable and regional variation can at times be rather localised. Having to dry milking cows off because of a drought, only to find that rains bring exceptional autumn growth, must have been financially very challenging for some farmers last summer. Helping to maintain milk production can encourage dry matter intake, making it possible for cows to produce more milk without sacrificing body condition. If pasture supply is inadequate, buffer feeding with silage or palm kernel expeller (PKE) can help maintain energy intakes but will not support milk protein production as well as grain based feed. In-shed feeders are often encouraged to stop feeding

grain if there is surplus of pasture. Continuing to feed in the dairy shed can improve cow flow and help to deliver minerals and additives but may have a more important role in helping to support milk production and smooth some of the variability in production, which can be more pronounced in pasture-only systems. When the rain falls after a drought, the luxurious grass growth can be very leafy and whilst it is often argued that pasture fed cows do not benefit from offering straw, I have seen a response from feeding structural fibre, which supports rumination. Pelleted feeds are a good option to help mitigate a rapid post-peak decline. They are a source of highly fermentable carbohydrates for energy and can contain high levels of protein, vitamins and minerals, which can be low in summer pasture. They also contain lower levels of NDF, meaning the total NDF of the overall diet is reduced. Monitoring milk urea levels could be useful to help identify when the diet is lacking protein. Reliance has a number of grain based feeds to help maintain production over summer.

DAIRY PROTEIN SUSTAINReliance Dairy Protein Sustain was specially formulated to complement low protein summer pasture. It contains high quality protein sources such as soyabean meal and peas, which provide both rumen degradable and rumen bypass protein to the cow. Protein is the accelerator of milk production

and with cows safely back in-calf, summer might be the right time to hit the accelerator to counter falling appetites, which can put the brakes on production. Response has been greatest on dryland farms, which have disproved the misconception that cows on pasture are always over supplied with protein and do not respond to additional protein. Protein drives milk production but milk production drives appetite, so higher yielding cows can put more milk in the vat without sacrificing condition.

DAIRY STANDARD EXPRESSReliance Dairy Standard Express is a cost effective feed that has higher starch and lower NDF than Reliance Summer Milk and PKE. This will aid in maintaining milk production and body condition score. Trace elements such as zinc, selenium, cobalt, manganese, iodine and copper are added, to supplement lower levels in summer pasture.

SUMMER MILKReliance Summer Milk is an economic supplement for summer and contains higher energy and lower fibre (both NDF and ADF) than palm kernel meal. This means that pasture substitution won’t be as high. Summer Milk also contains added minerals such as zinc, selenium, cobalt, manganese, iodine and copper, to supplement lower levels in summer pasture and grain.

ADDITIVESAdditives such as Bovatec, additional magnesium oxide, limeflour or additional trace elements and vitamins can be added to tailor the feed to farm specific requirements. If you do what you have always done, you tend to get what you have always got – if milk production last summer was disappointing, what can be done differently this season?

ANIMAL HEALTH

Don’t think of an exit drench as adding yet another into your drenching programme but as a substitute to the last drench. The most important thing is to select a product that is chemically different to those previously used and one that is effective against all common production limiting worms. By doing this, it’s possible to limit or prevent any shedding of eggs from treated worms into an environment that will be more drench resistant than the general population, hence advancing resistance. The timing of exit drenching can vary by region. In spring, Teladorsagia, Trichostrongylus and Nematodirus worms are dominant when lambs and ewes are most at risk. By reducing the infective larvae shed onto pasture at this time of year, it will reduce worms surviving through the summer months and re-infecting stock. Another key time for an exit drench treatment is following the use of capsules, or other long acting products in ewes. Although the most common timing of exit drenching is post autumn and spring, it can be given after any drench that is suspected to have left residual worms, whether there is resistance or not. A recent resistance study by Gribbles Vet Laboratory (NZ) over the 2010-2011 season indicates resistance to all singles varies from 55 percent to 84 percent; doubles 14 percent to 25 percent; triples 8 percent and moxidectin 19 percent. So what is an appropriate exit drench for your property? Ideally, this should be determined by investigating the resistance status of your farm. If you don’t know the status of your property then a triple active product is a good choice. Triple active products are highly effective against sheep worms with single or dual anthelmintic resistance. This helps

Clean out spring wormsTo keep stock clean of worms throughout

summer, best practice is to introduce an exit drench into your planned drench

programme. An exit drench will remove any drench-resistant worms that have survived

late spring drenching. Consequently, it slows resistance development and results in

better stock health and productivity.

to delay the development of resistance to all actives. If you’re still not convinced that an exit drench is necessary on your farm, local studies by Sutherland et al (2010) showed production gains from integrating this practice into a drench programme. It resulted in a carcase weight gain of 2.8kg, which translated to a 14 percent increase in value when using an effective drench, compared to lower efficacy drench against resistant Ostertagia and Trichostrongylus. An added bonus was less breech soiling (dags). Exit drenching should be included in a planned drench management programme. It will improve animal health and productivity, leading to better farm revenues.

“The ability to turn up, process the sheep and fit around work schedules, the weather and other farm demands is proving a unique advantage. Many farmers now are tight for time and busy with multiple jobs, making the contractor option an appealing one – particularly with the ability to work through 1500 sheep in an hour.” Increasing evidence that a number of the traditional pour-on drenches, usually favoured by farmers on grounds of convenience, are starting to fail for fly control, has helped lift business for Les. But for Les’ clients, problems with resistance are less of a current concern right now. Up until four years ago, he had been using the traditional organo-phosphate dips to control flystrike, enduring the smell and residue risks that accompany such treatments. However Cyrex Liquid, a combination maggot, fly and lice control, manufactured by Elanco Animal Health, provides a welcome option and a New Zealand based solution to better fly control. Cyrex’s two actives target two different stages of fly infestation. The cyromazine compound delivers up to 12 weeks fly control, while maggot and lice infestation are controlled by a potent new active called spinosad – the same as that found in the Extinosad and Expo products. In the past, Les would have had to add an organo-phosphate to control maggots. The Extinosad active is based on a naturally occurring bacterium that produces a powerful insecticide targeting only lice and maggots. Like many operators regularly exposed to sheep dip compounds, he appreciates the user friendly nature of Cyrex.

Hit fly control head-on with Cyrex Liquid

Les Te Kanawa has worn out plenty of rubber during the past 10 years building up his sheep dipping

business around the central North Island.

He says the colourless, odourless nature of Cyrex has had some clients asking if it is even in the dip mix when he starts running sheep through his Electrodip. However he has seen enough evidence first hand to vouch for its effectiveness. “During the summer of 2010-11, I dipped a farmer’s sheep the day the dry spell broke, in late December. But he still got a full eight weeks protection plus some, to get him through a very challenging summer.” King Country farmer Peter Fullerton-Smith can also vouch for Cyrex’s effectiveness. “We had tried pour-ons before but they were not so effective. Les had been using Cyrex and offered to dip with it - and we went with his advice. We first used it in the bad summer of 2011 and it worked right through - we have been very happy with it,” says Peter. Peter hastens to add the effectiveness of Cyrex is also attributable to the effectiveness of the operator. Les’ experience handling sheep and establishing an efficient, rapid service is appreciated. “You could say Cyrex is a good product but Les is a good operator. He gets the job done with a minimum of fuss and we know it will be done properly.” Cyrex Liquid is available in 5L and 10L packs, each of which will make up 2500 litres or 5000 litres of dipwash. Cyrex will achieve up to 12 weeks fly prevention with saturation jetting or dipping of the target areas of the sheep. You’ll also achieve complete lice control with saturation treatment of the entire fleece. Available now from a CRT Farmlands store near you.

GRAIN & SEED

New Zealand leads the world for forage grazing systems - primarily based on the growing and harvesting of grass and clover based pastures - which is underpinned by the growing of forage supplements such as brassicas. To maintain our competitive edge, it is important that forage genetics are continually improved. So each year, PGG Wrightson Seeds invests a significant amount into research, breeding and development of new cultivars specifically for the New Zealand grazing system. The central basis for this development programme is the Kimihia Research Centre, based in Canterbury, although PGG Wrightson Seeds has breeding and trial sites throughout New Zealand. They have a team of plant breeders that in association with key partners such as Plant and Food Research and Grasslanz Technology, a subsidiary of AgResearch, develop new cultivars with improved agronomic and animal performance traits. Breeding objectives for a new cultivar varies, according to species and how the cultivar will be used on-farm. Fundamentally, new products from PGG Wrightson Seeds must have a significant improvement in an agronomic and/or nutritional characteristic before it is released. For example, new perennial ryegrasses generally are higher yielding, have better disease resistance and include novel endophyte technology such as AR1 and AR37. Prior to commercialisation, PGG Wrightson Seeds will rigorously test a new cultivar to ensure it meets certain standards across a range of conditions throughout New Zealand. Recent success stories from the development programme have been the development of new ryegrass cultivars, such as Base tetraploid perennial ryegrass and Excess and Rely diploid perennial ryegrasses. These

cultivars include AR37 and AR1 novel endophyte technology and are expected to be class leading options over the coming years. In association with Plant and Food Research, PGG Wrightson Seeds develops forage brassicas best suited to New Zealand grazing systems. Regal kale was one of the more recent releases, which meets an increasing need in the market for a high yielding kale with a high leaf to stem ratio, to ensure better utilisation than traditional medium to tall cultivars. One of the most exciting and game changing developments from this programme has been the recent release of the Cleancrop™ Brassica System, which integrates a range of herbicide tolerant brassicas that can be sprayed with a broad spectrum herbicide (Telar®) to keep crops free of weeds. The speed of adoption of this technology has exceeded expectations, particularly the HT™ swede, which highlights the benefits of having a key retailer like CRT Farmlands involved in bringing this product to market. CRT Farmlands plays an important role in the commercialisation of all new products. Technical Field Officers (TFO’s) work with the technical team from PGG Wrightson Seeds to trial new products that are at the point of commercialisation, testing their applicability in your farming area. Contact your local Technical Field Officer for further information on new products such as Base, Excess and Rely perennial ryegrasses, Regal kale and the Cleancrop™ Brassica System.

GRAIN & SEED

Hunter is a forage brassica that is ready to graze quickly after planting (eight -10 weeks). This high-quality feed grows lambs quickly (180 to 300 grams per day) and strong recovery from the first grazing allows for three to four grazings over summer and autumn. A typical crop can carry 60 to 70 lambs per hectare through that period, resulting in up to 18 kilograms of liveweight gain per hectare each day. Winfred and Spitfire forage rapes also provide multiple grazings over summer and although they take slightly longer to mature to first grazing (10–12 weeks and 13–14 weeks respectively) than Hunter, they have better drought and heat tolerance. Red clover and/or herbs can also be sown with forage rapes, to create high-quality pasture for the following summer without the need for re-establishment. Winfred has the re-growth potential for three to four grazings, whereas one to two can be expected from Spitfire, depending on the environment and grazing management. Typically, if more than two grazings are required, Winfred is a better option. Agricom have run trials on Sensation (red clover), Hunter (leafy turnip) and Winfred (forage rape) and have identified that an allocation for lambs of between 2-2.5kg DM/lamb/day will generally maximise the amount of forage grown, as well as the animal performance per hectare. Allocation is the amount of feed (DM) offered per animal per day and is usually determined by stocking rate. To achieve high allocation, stocking rates are low and for lower allocation, stocking rates increase. For Winfred and Hunter, to get an average animal allocation of between 2-2.5kg DM/lamb/day requires the crop utilisation to be around 60-70 percent, which entails leaving 30-40 percent of the crop behind. The photos show the desired post-grazing residuals for Winfred (rape) and Hunter (leafy turnip). As the allowance increases (and stocking rates decrease), the post-grazing residual (forage ungrazed) increases. A stock

Grazing: optimise don’t maximiseSummer brassicas have traditionally been

used in summer-dry regions to provide feed when pastures are affected by drought,

although farms in higher rainfall areas can also benefit from these crops, because of their

high dry matter (DM) production potential. Brassicas are an effective way to finish a large number of lambs quickly on a relatively small

area. In order to achieve the desired animal performance from summer brassicas, it is

important to ensure grazing management allows an allocation that both maximises the

amount of forage grown, as well as the animal performance per hectare.

allocation of 3.0kg DM/lamb/day gave a 40 percent utilisation, with the lower 1.0kg DM/lamb/day allowance giving 100 percent utilisation (very low post grazing residual). With very low post-grazing residuals from high stocking rates, the amount of forage re-growth declined, due to reduced energy reserves for re-growth. However at the higher post-grazing residuals, the re-growth also reduced and the reason for this is less clear. With low animal allocation, the individual LWG was low, due to competition between lambs to eat the allocated forage, which reduces daily intake and consequently lamb growth. On the other hand, with the high allocations, individual animal performance was high but there weren’t enough animals on the crop to maximise total output (kg meat/ha).

So to optimise both liveweight gain per hectare and the amount of forage grown, it is important to achieve the allocation of 2-2.5kg DM/lamb/day. For more information on how to get the most out of your summer brassica or decisions on what is most appropriate for your situation, contact your CRT Farmlands Technical Field Officer.

FERTILISER

Article supplied by Ballance Agri-Nutrients

TIMING AND RATES FOR DIFFERENT CROPSThe timing of nitrogen additions will vary for different crops but the overriding aim is to support crops when they are growing at their maximum rate.

MAIZEMaize crops require between 100 and 200kg N/ha at the five-six leaf stage (when the crop is about knee height). This will be around six to eight weeks after emergence. If you have planted your crop into an effluent paddock your crop’s nitrogen requirements will be lower.

BRASSICASGrant Bickley, Ballance Merchant Relationship Representative, has a lot of experience developing fertiliser programmes for crops. "For brassicas", he says, "the available N soil sample will tell you what nitrogen you have in the soil at the beginning. "You need to know how much nitrogen the crop will use in total, in order to know how much fertiliser nitrogen to apply. "For kale and swede crops, if you’ve put a starter fertiliser on, you may get away with a single post-emergence nitrogen application, depending on what’s already in the soil. A split application will

Nitrogen key to hitting crop targetsOnce crops are in the ground, it’s time to think about their post-emergence nitrogen requirements. Nitrogen is a key nutrient that all crops need to reach their target yields and in this article we’ll look at the particular requirements of maize, brassica and fodder beet crops. Regardless of crop type, some basic principles should be followed:

• Measuringhowmuchnitrogenisavailablefromthesoilforfree• Settingayieldtargetforyourcrop• Decidingonthetimingandratesfornitrogenapplications• Selectinganappropriateproduct

*Ex-pasture paddocks based on high available N, 200kg/ha; ex-crop paddocks based on medium available N, 100kg/ha

The amount of available nitrogen in soil is heavily influenced by paddock history. FAR research has shown that paddocks coming out of lon g-term pasture can release up to 300kgN/ha through the decomposition of organic matter after cultivation - this is plenty to meet your crop’s requirements. However, as paddocks are continually cropped, these levels will decline - for example, after one crop you can expect the levels to have dropped to about 100kgN/ha. The only way you can know how much nitrogen is available for your current crop is by soil testing. How much fertiliser nitrogen you need to add will depend on your expected crop yield. This will be affected by a number of variables, including soil fertility, crop type, sowing date, the season (moisture and temperature), as well as how many weed, pest and disease problems your crop has to contend with. Your Ballance representative has access to tools like AmaizeN, a computer program that uses your soil test results and crop details to work out the optimum nitrogen fertiliser strategy for your maize crop. Using this helps ensure that you are not adding too much nitrogen, which is not only

a waste of money but also risks damaging the environment. Table 1 shows the typical amounts of post-emergence nitrogen you can expect to add, assuming you included nitrogen with your starter fertiliser.

Table 1: Typical rates of N required, taking paddock history into account.

be needed for higher rates - the first six or eight weeks after sowing and the second in the autumn (around eight to 12 weeks after sowing). The total nitrogen use will be around 300-350kg N/ha – that’s including what is supplied from the soil."

FODDER BEETFor fodder beet, Grant’s advice is a bit different. "You’re looking at applying nitrogen at least eight -10 weeks post emergence, because of its slower initial growth. Quite often, people put fodder beet in as the first crop after pasture, so the soil nitrogen levels are pretty reasonable. You usually only need one post-emergence nitrogen application. "It doesn’t require as much nitrogen as brassicas - at most around 250-300kg N/ha all up. Fodder beet is quite a gross feeder of potash, so, depending on your soil test results, you might put on a bit of potassium with the nitrogen.’

WHICH PRODUCT?Nitrogen can be applied as Nrich urea, or if conditions are unfavourable, SustaiN. By using SustaiN, you will halve (on average) the amount of nitrogen lost to the air by volatilisation, compared to losses from urea. This nitrogen is retained in the soil where it can be used by plants. For crops, SustaiN is a good choice if canopy cover is sparse, especially if the nitrogen fertiliser is going to be broadcast and rain (a minimum of 10mm within eight hours) is not expected. A dense canopy cover is believed to protect against high levels of volatilisation loss. For more information on nitrogen fertiliser product choices for this year’s crops, talk to your CRT Farmlands or Ballance representative.

CHRISTMAS GIFT FOR A GARDENER

If you’re after a Christmas gift for just about any type of gardener – new or experienced – it’s hard to beat the new, 78th edition of Yates Garden Guide. First published in 1895, this fully updated book has been brought out to celebrate Yates 130th birthday. The opening chapters tell the story of gardening in

New Zealand and are illustrated with heritage images that evoke past eras in our gardens.

Festive flowers and gardens

HOME & GARDEN

Article supplied by Yates

As long as the weather doesn’t get too hot, December is a lush and luxuriant month in the garden with bright colours, heady fragrances and abundant growth. The garden is often at its best in the evening, the perfect time of day for summer entertaining.

VEGIES TO SOW IN DECEMBER – ZUCCHINIS

Zucchinis (or, if you prefer, courgettes) are some of the easiest and most versatile home garden vegies. Sow seed straight into a rich, pre-prepared garden bed (Dynamic Lifter PLUS Fruit Food would be ideal) and, in warm weather, start harvesting within a matter of weeks. Zucchinis can be diced into salads, mixed into stir fries and baked or sautéed. The trendiest way to use them, of course, is to stuff and fry or bake the flowers - a surefire way to impress your guests! In cooler areas, don’t forget to sow Brussels sprouts seeds into pots of Yates Black Magic Seed Raising Mix so that you can get the seedlings planted out as soon as possible.

FLOWERS TO SOW IN DECEMBER - AGERATUM

Ageratum Blue Mink is a summer-loving annual that adds cool blue notes to the garden. Its common name is floss flower, an apt reference to the fluffy flowerheads. The fine seed is best started off in pots, because it has to be sown on the surface

where it dries out easily. A covering of plastic sheeting will help retain moisture around the seeds but be sure to keep the pots in light shade so they don’t cook.

FEED IN DECEMBER

Feed roses as they finish their main spring/early summer flush. Either use Thrive Granular Rose Food or organic-based Dynamic Lifter PLUS Flower Food. Yates Acticote or the new Thrive Liquid Concentrate for roses are the best choices for potted roses. An occasional sprinkling of Sulphate of Potash will help boost rose disease resistance.

PRUNE IN DECEMBER

Keep on top of rampant summer growth with constant trimming, hedging and removal of dead flowers. Try to keep a pair of easy-to-grab secateurs near the door. That way you’ll remember to take them with you whenever you step outside.

DECEMBER PEST WATCH – TOMATO/POTATO PSYLLID

Watch out for the relatively new to New Zealand tomato and potato psyllid attacking these related plants. The tiny sap-sucking pests cause the leaves to curl and yellow. Look, too, for the 2mm long cicada-like insects or the bright yellow eggs attached to leaves. Begin spraying with Mavrik straight away.

DECEMBER JOB FILE

Now that foliage has died down completely, lift bulbs for summer storage. Make sure they’re clean, soil-free and as dry as possible before placing them in net bags and hanging them in a cool dry spot.

PLANT OF THE MONTH – CALLISTEMONS

Drought tolerant callistemons provide reliable summer colour. Most produce cheery and seasonally appropriate Christmas-red brushes but there are some (e.g ‘Anzac’) with paler blooms. Callistemon means ‘beautiful stamen’ which is why this has also been chosen to be part of the botanic name of our stunning Poor Knights Lily.

More shareholders have favoured us with the sale of their property and trading over the historically quiet winter months sees us ahead of forecast sales targets. Nationally the real estate market is very active. We have diversified the business to support shareholders who are conducting business in provincial residential, lifestyle and rural markets.

We are increasingly fielding enquiry from shareholders to list and sell their commercial business interests, whether that be rural contracting operations such as spraying and fencing to commercial buildings that are both for sale and lease, to various small to medium businesses in provincial towns.

On an upward trend we are being favoured to sell large tracts of commercial and residential zoned land, which are being promoted to developers/investors looking for opportunities. Currently the team have opportunities based in Wanaka, Christchurch surrounds and the Waitaki Valley.

Overseas interest is a topic that always generates discussion. Recently we have been involved in capital raising for large farming entities. Also overseas enquiry from fund managers has been forthcoming. Generally they are looking for farming opportunities of scale.

The market is strong, driven largely by the confidence within the dairy sector, which is again flowing throughout the wider rural sector. This influence has seen dairy sales at extremely strong levels, land suitable for conversion keenly sought and record prices being set. The appetite for property suitable for dairy support which is located within an acceptable trucking distance has meant that some sheep and beef properties that were not previously considered as support opportunities are now on the purchaser’s radar.

To date the spring selling season for sheep and beef properties has seen the strongest level of interest from purchasers wishing to continue in the sector for many years. Arable farms, where there is a existing arable presence in the district, have seen purchasers competing and securing properties to grow their business. Achieving a business with scale across all market sectors has become more of an influencing factor.

The merger of Farmlands and CRT now allows shareholders to promote their South Island properties to a national audience. This scale now translates into 55,000 prospective buyers looking at your listing from both islands. The Farmlander magazine which you will receive in January 2014, is the third largest rural publication in New Zealand.

Shareholder benefits when listing and selling with your real estate company include shareholder commission rates, the opportunity of national marketing via The Farmlander Magazine at competitive rates and Choices Rewards Points on commission paid. At the directors descretion they may ratify a rebate also on commission paid. Space is limited within The Farmlander Magazine so for those who are considering their autumn marketing campaigns, please contact your local salesperson to secure space now.

Wishing you compliments of the season and please feel free to contact me.
