Gramoxone/Paraquat Training Required Before Use

Certified applicators must successfully complete an EPA-approved training program before mixing, loading, and/or apply-ing paraquat. Anyone using Gramoxone, Firestorm, Helmquat, Para-zone, and other paraquat products must complete an EPA-mandated training before application. After November 14, 2019, the EPA requires companies to have newly labeled products on the market.

The following are items related to the new label for para-quat products:

Only certified applicators, who successfully completed the paraquat-specific training, can mix, load or apply paraquat

No longer allow application “under the direct supervision” of a certified applicator

Restricting the use of all paraquat products to certified applicators only EPA required video training link.

Users must create an account with username and password

Applicators must repeat training every three years

For additional information and FAQs about the paraquat training go to the EPA Paraquat Dichloride Training for Certified Applicators website.

Maryland’s Next Generation

Farmland Acquisition Program

Now Open

The Maryland Agricultural and Resource-Based Industry Development Corporation (MARBIDCO) has announced that the Next Gen-eration Farmland Acquisition Program (“Next Gen Program”) will reopen on a monthly basis to help qualified young and beginning farmers who seek to purchase farmland, but need some special-ized financial assistance to enter (or continue in) the agricultural profession in exchange for help-ing to preserve the farmland.

The Next Gen Program is a relatively fast-moving farmland conservation easement option purchase program that is designed to help facilitate the transfer of farmland to a new generation of farm-ers, while also effectively helping to preserve the subject agricultural land from future develop-ment. The selection for participation in this pro-gram is expected to be competitive.

Persons interested in applying to the Next Gen Program are requested to make contact with their respective county agricultural land preserva-tion staff (in the county in which the far mland is located) to discuss the suitability of a subject farm being permanently preserved. The formal Next Gen Program application submission dead-line (including all required application forms and related attachments) is the last business day of every month, at the MARBIDCO offices in An-napolis. Late applications will be held over to the next month.

Further information about the Next Gen Program may be obtained by contacting Allison Roe, Fi-nancial Programs Specialist, at (410) 267-6807,

Nutrient Management Voucher Program Information

Anyone who applies nutrients to 10 or more acres of agricultural land they manage is required to have a nutrient applicator voucher, be a certified nutrient management consultant, or a certified farmer/operator. These vouchers expire after three (3)years. In order to renew the voucher, two (2) hours of continuing education credits (CEUs) are required. The Maryland Department of Agricul-ture and University of Maryland Extension together have upcoming programming available for renewal credits, as well as first time voucher trainings. Educational credits will be available at the Cecil County, Kent County and Queen Anne's County Agronomy Days. A complete list of all upcoming programming where CEUs will be available can be found at: https://mda.maryland.gov/resource_conservation/Pages/nutrient_management_training_program.aspx. To sign up for or get additional information on these programs, please contact your local Extension Office.

College Park, MD. – The Charles County Extension Office and CONSERVE: A Center of Excellence at the Nexus of Sustainable Wa-ter Reuse, Food, & Health will host a half-day workshop for farmers and local officials interested in learning more about using recycled water as an alternative irrigation water source for agriculture. The Water Reuse for Agriculture: What Growers Need to Know Workshop will be held on December 4, 2019, at the Charles Coun-ty Extension Office in Bel Alton. The workshop will run from 8 am to 1 pm. Sessions will cover issues associated with water quality research, new water filtration and treatment technologies, and updates on reclaimed water regulations for Maryland agriculture. Workshops are free to attend and lunch is provided. Registration is required to attend to guarantee lunch. Attendance at this program will also earn 3 Ag Nutrient Management CEUs. To register online: https://go.umd.edu/w2C “Recycled water presents an additional irrigation water source for farmers that is highly-regulated, safe, and reliable in face of increasingly unpredictable weather. These workshops will provide farmers, wastewater treatment plant operators, county offi-cials, and any other interested parties with the most up-to-date research on how water reuse fits into current farming practices and regulations,” according to Rachel Goldstein, an assistant research professor at the University of Maryland. ——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————

DESCRIPTION: Three half-day workshop series presented by CONSERVE: The Center of Excellence at the Nexus of Sustainable Water Reuse, Food, and Health. See demonstrations, learn about water reuse research in Maryland, and reg-ulation updates from University of Maryland researchers and agricultural professionals. Reused water is treated domestic wastewater used more than once before passing back into water cycle. The treatment allows for its reuse for a beneficial purpose, such as irrigation. Benefits of water reuse include potential yield increase, and a reliable and high quality water source. Come and learn about how water reuse can play an important role in sustaining and improving Maryland agriculture and protecting natural resources. Attendees can receive three Ag Nutrient Management Training CEUs. The workshops are free. Lunch will be provided. A draft agenda is available here. For more information, email [email protected].
