In reaching ostentatiously for trivial, readily available and cheap materials, such as a notebook, a needle and thread, or, ultimately, a cotton sheet, Lasota undermines the legitimacy of both the costly production process and the purpose of concealing the project’s preparatory phases from the ‘end user’. When a prototype is under development with a view to the eventual implementation of production and sales, then the design phase is not even so much concealed as, quite simply, deemed immaterial. By elevating her sketches, made in a small notebook, to the rank of objects and installations, Lasota both challenges and questions this state of affairs. At the same time, what she is, in point of fact doing, is constructing a strategy based on overturning the status of the object as something which is to function, because it has to be functional, irrespective of the context in which it is found and, first and foremost, from which it arises. She abandons the ‘final effect’, placing something which, in the classical design process, would be disregarded, at the centre of the viewer’s attention. In this case, it is the sketches themselves which are both the quintessence and the result of her work; they are, indeed, sometimes simply sketches executed in ballpoint, but then again, they are also often embroidered sketches, created by the artist with coloured threads. With this simple offering, Lasota focuses the viewer’s attention on the matter of the artist’s distinctive offering, on his or her activities, frequently flawed in technical terms, yet containing within them something which cannot be prized highly enough; intuition. Through the sketches in her notebook, she tells a tale, the intimate history of her own, personal (creative?) crisis, whilst, at one and the same time, balancing perilously on the border between the romantic myth of the tortured artist and the blood-and-bone reality of living through that condition. Agnieszka Lasota, podnosząc do rangi obiektu i instalacji swoje szkice wykonane w niewielkich notatnikach, buduje strategię opartą na obalaniu statusu przedmiotu, który ma funkcjonowad (ponieważ ma byd funkcjonalnym) niezależnie od kontekstu w jakim się znajdzie, a przede wszystkim z jakiego wynika. Lasota rezygnuje z „efektu finalnego”, przesuwając w centrum uwagi widza coś, co w klasycznym procesie pracy nad projektem zostałoby pominięte. W tym przypadku kwintesencją i efektem pracy są same szkice, które niekiedy są po prostu rzeczywiście szkicami wykonanymi długopisem, ale często także haftami wykonanymi przez artystkę barwnymi nidmi. Ten prosty gest kieruje uwagę odbiorcy na aspekt indywidualnego gestu twórcy, jego często niedoskonałego pod względem technicznym działania, którego nieprzecenianą wartością jest intuicyjnośd. Dzięki wykonanym w notesach szkicom Lasota opowiada intymną historię własnego kryzysu (twórczego?) i ryzykownie balansuje tym samym na granicy romantycznego mitu artysty oraz realnego doświadczenia tego stanu.
