Sanghi held a meeting today to review the measures being taken by Health Department to contain the spread of Novel Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) in Islands. While briefing about the measures taken by Health Department of UT Administration, the Principal Secretary (Health), Shri K R Meena informed that all passengers coming from mainland to Islands are being screened at the Airport and Port/ Harbour. The persons who are having symptoms and suspected of COVID-19 are being observed/ quarantined. Use glaucoma medication with regular consultation with eye specialist. Chief Secretary reviews measures taken by Health Department to contain spread of COVID-19 in Isles Staff Reporter, Port Blair, Mar 11 The Transport Department, A&N Administration is on the course of improving the quality of public transport in the Islands besides making effort towards addressing the issues related to clean mobility such as automobile related pollution, dependency on fossil fuel, increasing noise pollution etc. For improving the quality of public transport and to provide attractive & comfortable mode of transport to general public, an agreement between the Department of Transport of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd (NVVN, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC) has been signed for deployment of 40 e-buses. The agreement for 20 buses in the first phase was signed by the AGM, (Business Development), Shri Binay Mallik and Director Transport, Dr. Navlendra Kumar Singh in New Delhi recently. An agreement for another 20 buses will be signed by the end of March 2020. As per the agreement, 40 Air Conditioned Electric Buses (zero emission) will be provided to Transport Department by NTPC, informed the Director Transport, Dr. Navlendra Kumar Singh while speaking to the Daily Telegrams here today. The Director Transport said that these buses will provide a noiseless, pollution free and comfortable public transport to the citizens. These buses are fitted with GPS based vehicle tracking system, security cameras and panic buttons for the safety of commuters, especially women and children. The commercial operation of these buses will start from July, 2020. With the introduction of these electric buses, people will get quality public transport, while the increase in such mobility will lead to decrease in the number of personal vehicles on road, zero tail pipe emission leading to lesser pollution and will also lessen congestion in city roads, the Director said adding that second lot of 20 buses will be operated under 'Smart City Project'. The NTPC will provide drivers for these buses and carryout the maintenance work while conductors for these buses will be provided by the Transport Department, the Director informed. The Director further said that the NTPC has agreed to set up a set of fast charging stations so that these Electric buses do not face any difficulty after arrival. Transport Department has been continuously working to improve the quality, comfort, reliability and assured transport facility to the commuters in all parts of the UT, said the Director adding that the introduction of electric buses in the Island will go a long way in protecting the diverse ecology existing in these Islands. People urged to avoid mass gathering It was informed that the Department has quarantined 328 passengers as on 11.03.2020 out of which 185 have completed mandatory quarantine period and released and 143 are still under observation. Samples of 02 suspected passengers have been sent to viral laboratory KIPMR Chennai and 01 sample was tested at RMRC- ICMR, Port Blair and all have been found negative. It was also informed that advisory has been issued to all Political As directed by the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration and subsequent approval by Directorate of Health Services, all the passengers arriving to A&N Islands by any route shall undergo compulsory medical screening at Airport and Port irrespective of their country of origin/locality till further orders. Meanwhile, following the advisory regarding COVID19 disease received from the Govt. of India, the Andaman & Nicobar Administration has requested all concerned to avoid any public gathering including religious, political and official gathering across A&N Islands till further orders, official communications said here.
