Agricultural Education - FFA Chapter Coming to Bishop Neumann

Bishop Neumann has a unique opportunity to establish an Agricultural Program and FFA chapter starting in the 2016-2017 school year. The idea of bringing Agricultural Education and FFA to Neumann is not a new idea. This has been a parent driven idea that has been suggested to the administration during the Strategic Planning process and over the past few years. The Saunders County area has several agricultural related industries that will also benefit from Bishop Neumann’s introduction of an Agricultural Program in the school system. We hope to develop a strong partnership with these local Ag related industries to help our students gain experience and insight into future Ag related careers.

The first step to beginning this new program is hiring the right teacher. We have begun advertising for the position and will begin interviewing candidates in February. Once we have hired a qualified candidate, we will work closely with them and with the State Director of Nebraska Agricultural Education to determine the specific course offerings we will make available to our students. Initial discussions with the state point to these initial offerings: Introduction to Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, Agribusiness, Animal Biology, Plant Science/Horticulture, and Welding. Our hope is to have an exploratory Agricultural course available to our junior high students so that they will have a glimpse of what is available to them once they reach high school. Part of the duties connected to this new position is sponsorship of an FFA Chapter. Students who wish to become members of Neumann’s FFA chapter must enroll in at least one semester of an Agricultural course.

The timing for Agriculture Education and FFA to come to Neumann has fallen into place to make it a reality for the 2016-2017 school year. We do have a lot of work ahead of us to make sure it all comes together in a way that is most beneficial for our students and our community. We ask for your support and prayers so that it all comes together smoothly.

Did you know that 25 Nebraska

schools added Agricultural Education

Programs just in the last five years?

That's right! With 157 Nebraska programs,

agricultural education is preparing our youth

for careers in agriculture, food, and natural

resource-based industries that are the heart-

beat of our state economy. As the state's

largest industry, one of every three Nebras-

kans earn their living by agriculture. Even

though over 13,000 students take agricultur-

al classes each year, the state needs even

more highly trained youth to be the next

generation of entrepreneurs, employees, and

leaders within the industry.

National Walk for Life Twenty-Three Bishop Neumann students and Four Bishop Neumann adults

are traveling to Washington, D.C. next week for the National March for Life! They will be away from home on

pilgrimage January 19-24. The actual Walk is January 22, the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, which legalized

abortion in our country. Students and chaperones will be travelling with the Lincoln Diocese. Please pray for

the safe travel and spiritual journey of the following attendees:

Students: Jessie Br iley, John Celesky, Justine Cherovsky, Nicole Deharsh, Maura Dailey, Jacob Dennick,

Olivia Freeman, Avery Freeman, Molly Gerdes, Blake Hannan, Shanna Hoven, Mandi Jelinek, Rachael Mika,

Abigail Mongar, Rachel Scheffert, Elizabeth Schulz, Brenden Sensibaugh, Lizzy Sousek, Klara Stankova, Sid-

ney Stuhr, Haley Vasa, Becky Virgl, Nicole Woita.

Adults: Linda Hoven, Melanie Mongar, Janelle Schulz, Lori Woita

From the desk of Fr. Hazuka:

On January 17 and 20, Father Sean Kilcawley will be at Bishop Neumann to present to our parents on the topic “Parenting for Purity of

Heart”. We are currently working to have him come to our junior high and to our high school during the following week to present to

our young people the pitfalls of pornography and the beauty and freedom found in the Church’s teaching on human sexuality. What a

timely opportunity for our school community as our society struggles with topics such as transgender athletes, gay “marriage”, and easy

access to pornography. I hope you will be able to attend one of Father Kilcawley’s sessions.

Just recently, our United States bishops leased a 22-page statement on pornography. But more than being just a statement on

the sinfulness of pornography, the document provides a brief, well-crafted summary of the Christian understanding of human sexuality

and a presentation on why pornography is such a destructive sin, especially because of its availability through modern technology. The

statement concludes with words of home and encouragement to those who suffer from the effects of pornography.

In conjunction with Father Kilcawley’s presentation, I would recommend reading the Bishops’ statement, and even to read and

to discuss it with your children. It can be found at:

Parents of Students Currently enrolled in the following courses:

Math 7, Math 8, Algebra 2 (juniors only), and Pre-Calc (juniors only) Prior to registration, the math department will be making recommendations for the math course that these students will take next year.

Students in Math 7 will be recommended for Math 8, Pre-Algebra, or Algebra. Students in Math 8 will be recommended for Pre-

Algebra or Algebra. Recommendations for Math 7 and Math 8 students will be based on grades throughout the first 3 quarters, a

placement exam, CTBS test scores, and an evaluation of the student’s behavior and work ethic. Juniors in Algebra 2 will be

recommended for Business Math, Topics in Math, or Pre-Calc. Juniors in Pre-Calc will be recommended for Topics in Math or

Calculus. Recommendations for Algebra 2 and Pre-Calc students will be based on grades throughout the first 3 quarters and an

evaluation of the student’s behavior and work ethic.

Our goal is to place each student in a class where they can be successful, but also be challenged. A description of these courses as well

as a flow chart showing the progression of math courses can be found on the Neumann website. Please review your student’s 1st and

2nd Quarter grades and discuss with your student the recommendation options. We will inform your child of their math

recommendation sometime in March. If you have questions or concerns about your child’s placement, I encourage you to visit with

their teacher.

Where: Hilltop Country Club, Wahoo When: Friday February 5th , 8:00-12:00 What for: Proceeds will be used to buy gifts for this year’s GALA. We hope to be celebrating a BOYS BASKETBALL VICTORY that evening when the Number 1 Neumann Cavaliers take on the Number 2 Scotus Shamrocks. We will have sandwiches, chips, munchies and adult beverages on tap. You can come to the party and find out your numbers that night or check online at bishopneumann.com the next day. One hundred squares are being sold for $50. You will receive a number that will be randomly put into the 100

square grid. When the football squares grid is complete, we just need to wait till the game is played to deter-

mine who will be the winners. A winner is determined at the end of the 1st quarter, 2nd quarter, 3rd quarter,

and Final Game score. The winner is determined by looking at the last number in each of the teams' score,

and then matching those numbers on the grid and seeing which square intersects those two numbers. An

example would be if the Miami Dolphins were playing the New York Giants in the Super Bowl, and the score

at halftime was Miami Dolphins 33, and NY Giants 24. The last number for the Dolphins is 3, and the last

number for the Giants is 4. The square on the grid that has the Dolphins with a number of 3, and Giants score

of 4, would be the winner.

There will be a Prize awarded every quarter: You chose $250 Gift Certificate from: Nebraska

Furniture Mart, Target, Cabelas, Menards or Wahoo Super.

Contact the office at all three schools for tickets.

Or contact Sheri Meduna [email protected] for tickets.

The name of the newsletter is a play

on words: “plume” being French for

“pen” and English for “feather” —

representing the pen of the journalist

and the plume in the Cavalier’s hat.

No. 1, p. 1. Oct. 1964)
