Agriculture and Industrial Technology Complex

Project Summary

The new complex will provide 23,911 assignable square feet (asf) of new construction on the Merced Campus to address the growth of the campus. The facility will provide laboratory instructional space to respond to the changing educational and training requirements of persons entering and continuing employment in the Agriculture and Industrial Technologies sectors of Merced County and Statewide economy. Complementing the existing “dirty” labs for these programs, this project provides uniquely different “clean” technology oriented labs, which can be utilized for classes in agriculture business, animal science, electronics, mechanized agriculture, plant science and for college/industry collaboration.

The planning committee expressed a desire to have a building with its own identity; similar to a barn with a cupola.

A planning group consisting of students, faculty, staff, administrators, the District architect and the Capital Planning Manager, met on a monthly basis over a year and planned the details of the project.

Location of Building

The building was plotted to the west of the new Allied Health Complex and to the east of the current Plant Science Building. The location is ideal because of its proximity to the horticulture program and greenhouses. In addition the north loop road will be utilized to bring vehicles to the auto lab.

Project Timeline

The AG/IT Final Project Proposal is approved for funding. The funding is 50% local bond (SFID 1) and 50% state bonds. The state funds will come from the next voter-approved state bond, which is scheduled and approved for the November 2016 bond election. Approval of this state-wide bond will not only fund the AG/IT Project, but will also fund the Vocational Complex Renovation/Expansion Project.

At the Spring Bond Oversight Meeting, we will highlight the Vocational Complex Renovation/Expansion Project.
