Flexible degree structureThe first and second years are the same for students on allfour of our agriculture degrees.

Our flexible degree structure means it is possible to transferbetween any of our agriculture degrees up to the end ofStage 2 if you would like to.

Stage 1This stage covers scientific and quantitative aspects ofthe subject such as plant biology, animal science, andeconomics.You'll undertake laboratory work and ITapplications for applying statistical techniques to agriculturaldata.

Stage 2You apply the principles established in Stage 1 to animaland crop production and farm management.You alsotake a crop pests field course, focusing on the major insect,fungal and weed pests that affect crop production, engagingwith leading industry experts in the field.

Stage 3Students on our Agriculture BSc degree continue to follow abroad curriculum.Students on our other degrees follow amore specialist route in Agronomy, Animal ProductionScience or Farm Business Management.

Boost your employability with a work placementApply to spend 9 to 12 months on an optional workplacement between Stages 2 and 3. You can apply tospend your placement year with any organisation and willreceive University support to do so.

You’ll gain first-hand experience of working in the sector,putting your learning into practice and developing yourprofessional expertise.

It will extend your degree by a year and is subject toavailability.

Industry linksThe University is highly regarded within the industry and hasbeen a leader in agricultural education since 1891.

We have strong links with the local farmingcommunity, which provide experience of a wide range offarming practices including:

• arable• dairy• beef• sheep• pig• field-scale vegetable enterprises

In addition, you will have regular visits to the University'scommercial farms.

We also provide hands-on experience through asecond-year project managing your own crops, andvacation opportunities that include lambing and harvestjobs.

Teaching and assessment

Study at the cutting edgeTeaching is research-informed, so you'll learn from staffengaged in real-world research on the University's farmsand learn at the cutting edge of the discipline. You can alsoengage in research of your own through a research-ledfinal-year dissertation.

Teaching methodsLectures and laboratory practicals will teach you thescientific principles that underpin agriculture.

Visits to the University farms and other local farmingbusinesses will help you to understand the practicalapplication of the theory you learn.

You'll also complete project work and reports, working asan individual and in groups.

Assessment methodsAssessment is by formal examination at the end of eachsemester and by continuous assessment based on projectsand essays. The continuous assessment can account forhalf of your total marks, particularly in the final year.

Animal Production SciencecareersNewcastle agriculture graduates are highly regarded in theworld of agriculture and related industries, and as a resulthave a wide choice of careers open to them.

Whilst many graduates are employed in farm managementor go on to manage their own farms, others use the breadthof skills and experience that they develop during their degreeto follow a range of opportunities in the service and supplyindustries. These include research or advisory andconsultancy work with public and private organisations.

Graduates also find employment in commercialcompanies supplying fresh and processed produce, seeds,fertilisers, agrochemicals, animal feedstuffs, veterinaryproducts and equipment.

Building on their background in economics, businessstudies, and farm and estate management, some of ourstudents enter careers in finance, where they are particularlywell equipped to work as agricultural specialists. We areconfident that Newcastle agriculture graduates have thebreadth of knowledge and skills needed to succeed inwhatever they choose to do.
