International Test of English ProficiencyEnglish language proficiency is one of the qualifications many AGU member universities will review when assessing your eligibility for acceptance. If you’d like to test your English language level ahead of time, you may want to consider taking the International Test of English Proficiency (iTEP). This innovative, internet-based English assessment tool, which sets a new standard for scheduling flexibility and results availability, was developed by Boston Educational Services, a member of the National Postdoctoral Association, NAFSA, TABS, ERB, AIEA, and AAIEP.

A rapidly increasing number of institutions (300+), governments, businesses and other organizations around the world, including US colleges and universities, are already accepting iTEP test scores as proof of English proficiency for many reasons, including the following:

A F F OR DA BIL I T Y: The global retail price of $99 makes iTEP the most competitively priced internationally recognized English proficiency exam on the market.

C ON V E NIE NC E : AGU offices in key locations are now equipped to serve clients as certified iTEP testing facilities. AGU clients and other interested parties can schedule a testing date within three business days or less of contacting their nearest worldwide test center.

S EC UR I T Y: iTEP exams are only administered in secure certified iTEP testing facilities under the supervision of a qualified test administrator. Questions are drawn from an item bank in real time during the exam, further increasing the security of the content.

C OMP R E HE N S I V E NE S S: iTEP Academic tests reading, listening, writing, speaking, and grammar. Unlike many exams, test-takers actually write and speak during the test. Their samples are scored by iTEP’s ESL-qualified graders.

E F F IC IE NC Y: The complete iTEP Academic exam is administered in 90 minutes, and results are available within five business days. Once a prospective student’s test is administered and graded, iTEP will automatically email the applicant’s official score report to the university.

C R E DIBIL I T Y: iTEP is recognized by the Academic Credentials Evaluation Institute (ACEI) and Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training (ACCET) as an effective tool to validate intensive English programs, and was selected from among several other English proficiency exams for initiatives of the Colombian, Egyptian, and Saudi Arabian governments.

If you are interested in assessing your English language proficiency, contact AGU for assistance in scheduling an exam at your nearest iTEP testing center.

Attending a university is a big commitment for students and their families, both financially and otherwise. That’s why AGU works with universities that it considers to be a good value for the money when taking into consideration cultural context, competition from peer institutions, quality of instruction, infrastructure and educational outcomes.

When making a decision about something as important as a full degree abroad, you’ll want to carefully consider the cost in relation to the funds you will be able to access and the expected return on investment, or the quality of experience and satisfaction you will receive in exchange. As you assess the amount of money you need to budget for your degree abroad and the overall value of your education in return, the following factors will help you to reflect on the bigger picture of your investment:

1 . A C C E S S TO LOA N S , GR A N T S , A ND S C HOL A R S HIP S

We strongly encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to apply for scholarships and grants to help fund your studies, as the published price at most universities can be far more than the price you have to pay thanks to funding assistance. AGU is here to help you with all aspects of fulfilling your dream of studying in another country—that means even helping you find those sources of funding. AGU will advise you on finding the billions of dollars in scholarship funding and grants offered by organizations and universities to help support students like you.

2 . T HE C OMBINE D T UI T ION A ND F E E S F OR A N IN T E R N AT ION A L S T UDE N T AT T HE DE S IR E D UNI V E R S I T Y

Traditionally, tuition refers to the price for access to professors and their accumulated knowledge, expertise, and guidance, while fees correspond to additional costs to maintain the functioning of a university, including its administration, physical facilities, social organizations, and more. Tuition and fees may fluctuate annually and may vary by program, so you will want to work with your AGU Academic Consultant to determine the base cost of your degree.

3 . T HE AV E R AGE T IME TO C OMP L E T E A DEGR E E

An undergraduate degree around the world can take anywhere from three to five years depending on the educational system, credits previously completed and subject. Most master’s degrees in the United States take around two years to finish, while one year master’s are increasingly common in Europe and the United Kingdom. Other graduate and doctorate programs will vary in length depending on the type of research that is being conducted. Since there are annual costs associated with your studies, you’ll want to be sure to calculate accordingly when determining a long-term budget.

4. C O S T OF L I V ING A ND A DDI T ION A L E DUC AT ION A L E X P E N SE S

When considering the costs involved to pursue your degree, comparing tuition alone is only a partial measure of the real cost to you and your family. Additional expenses such as the cost of accommodation, transportation, meals, entertainment, flights home, classroom materials, etc. must also be taken into account. Since AGU staff live and work in many cities where our partner universities are located, they are ideally situated to give you a realistic estimate of all the costs you won’t find on the university’s web page.

5 . YOUR JOB P R O S P EC T S A ND E A R NING P OT E N T I A L

If the money you spend on your degree gives you the skills you need to build a rewarding career and command your own employment destiny, it will unquestionably have been worth it. But to know your prospects, you’ll want to work with one of our academic consultants to find out what kinds of jobs and average salaries graduates of a given field are likely to find. If you live in a country where education is virtually free, but where there is little hope of finding employment doing what you love, then spending money to build your future in a more costly part of the world can be a very reasonable decision as your accumulated debt can be repaid quickly by your resultant earnings.

6 . C UR R E NC Y F LUC T UAT ION S

If you and your family are earning and saving rupees, kroner or rubles, for example, and are considering investing in a degree that’s priced in dollars, pounds or euros, then you’ll want to pay close attention to the fluctuations between the currencies in question. No one can predict what will happen in a global currency market, but you’ll certainly want to begin your overseas degree knowing which factors can influence how much you’ll be spending from year to year.

Page 9: AGU Degree Catalog

Finding An External ScholarshipGetting a scholarship can mean more work initially for an applicant since you’ll need to spend considerable time preparing additional application materials and submitting supporting documents to meet strict deadlines; then again, if you end up qualifying for an award, you’re sure to conclude it was worth it, since now you can focus on your degree instead on earning the money to pay for it.

But where to start? It’s always sound advice to get an early start on the competition, and there’s no time like the present. Why not start searching the web today? You may be surprised at how many options exist for a person in your position, and not just because of your academic performance…did you know that many scholarships are reserved for members of particular ethnic groups, students born in a particular country, or students interested in a degree in a discipline for which there is a shortage of experts?

Visit the AGU website for great resources that will help you to find scholarships based on input about where you’re from and where you want to go: aguglobal.com

Application MaterialsSo it turns out that maybe financial help isn’t as scarce as you had thought. The other good news is that most scholarships applications are very similar to the university applications you’ll have grown used to filling out. Before you start preparing your application, double check to make sure you meet the eligibility requirements. Always read the fine print—you don’t want to be chasing down recommendation letters from former professors for funding that, for instance, can’t be disbursed to a person from your country of origin, or that is reserved for a person of the opposite sex.

Once you and your AGU Academic Consultant agree that you’ve found a scholarship that matches your needs, you’ll usually need to prepare the following:

• Certification of previous education (this may have to be sent directly from your former school)

• Recommendation letters (normally from teachers familiar with your work)

• Proof of language abilities (iTEP, TOEFL, IELTS)

• A statement of purpose or motivation (why you are a deserving candidate, etc.)

• A résumé or Curriculum Vitae

You’ll want to make copies of all these documents before sending them off and have several different people read through your statement of purpose to help refine your work. If you would like to brainstorm ideas, receive additional advice or request proofreading for your personal statement and application materials, don’t be shy about asking the AGU Academic Consultant you’ve been working with for assistance!

In terms of how to present yourself to a scholarship selection committee, here are some tried and true tips:

1. You should set out to answer two basic questions for the selection committee --Why you, and why this scholarship? Talk only about personal and academic goals that address the purpose and spirit of the monies being allocated.

2. Think of yourself as an ambassador for your country who’ll be advancing the mission of the scholarship agency. If the scholarship addresses a perceived weakness in national security or key language abilities, explain how you’ll make your country more secure or why you’re certain to master the language in question.

3. Eliminate extra words. Selection committees may have to read through hundreds of submissions; stay on point and get rid of excess verbage.

4. Be positive but realistic.

5. Allow what’s unique about your personality and background to come through. The whole point is to stick out in a crowd, so speak your truth and avoid clichés.

6. If you run into a writing block, it might help to put your letter aside for some days and then check it again when your head is clearer.

USING SCHOLARSHIPS TO FUND YOUR INTERNATIONAL STUDIES

Page 10: AGU Degree Catalog

ACADEMIC YEAR PROGRAMS run for one full year of studies, generally allowing the student to complete two or more rounds of courses during the length of their program. Depending on the location, the academic year may begin in January through March and run through November or December (common in the Southern hemisphere), or it may begin in August or September and run through the following April through June (common in the Northern hemisphere).

SEMESTER OR TRIMESTER PROGRAMS are one of the most popular program options. These programs allow students to enroll in one-half of an academic year for an average of 16-18 weeks or one-third of an academic year for an average of 10-14 weeks, respectively.

SUMMER PROGRAMS take place during the traditional U.S. summer, generally for one month in duration any time between May through August. Due to their flexibility and convenience in most students’ academic calendars, summer programs are one of the most popular and practical options for students.

INTENSIVE MONTH OR J-TERM PROGRAMS last one month or 3 weeks in duration, respectively. These programs are ideal for students seeking more independent intensive study options during school breaks. These programs generally take place during the January or February months, though they are offered year-round in certain locations.

GAP YEAR PROGRAMS are ideal for high school graduates who want to explore their interests, delve into unfamiliar territory, and have an experience abroad prior to beginning their college studies that will help them enter college more focused and independent. The programs do not have to encompass a full year and students can choose from a variety of summer or semester programs.

HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAMS are created just for students currently enrolled in high school programs. These 2-5 week study options generally take place during school breaks in the traditional U.S. academic system such as Spring Break (March or April) and summer (June through August).

CURRENT AGU MEMBER UNIVERSITIES

Applying to Non-Member UniversitiesAGU’s team of academic consultants is trained to give you information about our partner universities throughout the world, but we also realize that there can sometimes be compelling reasons for wanting to apply for study at an institution that falls outside our network of partners. If you already have your heart set on a university that’s not a member of AGU, or if your academic consultant feels that there is a non-member university that represents an especially good fit for your study and career goals, you can still benefit from a relationship with AGU. For a service fee, we can offer you the same support services for applying to a non-member that we offer for free to students applying to member schools.

One popular approach to applying to universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, and some other parts of the world is to apply to a range of types of institution: for instance, one highly selective school where, given your academic background, it may be a “stretch” to get accepted; at least one school that’s somewhat less selective (where your chances are mathematically better); and finally another “fall back” school you have strong reason to believe will grant you admission.

If your “stretch” school is not a member of AGU, we can normally help you find a school in the second or third category that is a member. In this case, you would pay AGU a fee for services for the inclusion of the stretch school among those applied to--but this fee would be reimbursed to you in the event that you finally accept an offer of admission at one of the AGU member schools.

Did YouKnow?

San Bernardino lies along the storied Route 66 interstate highway and, along with Chicago and Los Angeles, is mentioned in the popular U.S. song “I Get My Kicks on Route 66.”

Because of its sub-lunar landscapes, many episodes of Star Trek and other sci-fi films and series have been shot in the desert near San Bernardino.

CSUSB’s official mascot is the Coyote, a nickname inspired by the species of canine that inhabit the area around the campus, which lies on the rolling foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains.

John F. Kennedy Universitysan francisco, united states

Overview of the city:SAN FRANCISCO (POPULATION: 7,150,000)San Francisco, the gorgeous and dynamic “City by the Bay”, is a true American emblem: from the architectural grandeur of the Golden Gate Bridge to the aspirations of its many immigrants, misfits and innovators, perhaps no other place on earth so readily evokes the spirit of “thinking outside the box.” And yet there’s more to San Francisco than fast companies, dot-coms and start-ups chasing the American Dream - on the steep streets of Nob Hill, Pacific Heights, the Marina you’ll find an air of old Europe, with romantic sidewalk cafes frequented by the hippest of the international jet-set and cable cars that evoke a nostalgia for a past when life was slower-paced. Home to the famous Haight-Ashbury district where the peace, love, and rock & roll movement reached its zenith in the 1960s, and across the bay from infamous Alcatraz Island which once housed some of America’s most notorious gangster era icons like Al Capone, San Francisco’s rich history adds to the unique culture that has developed around the city.

SPECIAL PROGRAMSJohn F. Kennedy’s English language programs, offered throughout the year, feature skilled and experienced instructors with advanced degrees in TESOL, English, linguistics and related fields. Each has traveled extensively, worked in another country, and studied a foreign language. Because JFKU’s instructors have personally experienced many of the situations that international students encounter, they are thoroughly prepared to help students conquer the challenges of learning a new language and culture.

UNIVERSITY HIGHLIGHTS John F. Kennedy University is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and a member of the National University System. The University offers undergraduate-completion programs, graduate and doctorate degrees and certificates in the fields of psychology, law, management, liberal arts, holistic studies and museum studies. San Francisco

San Francisco is an incredible city with a fascinating history. Much like New York City, San Francisco is an American city that has served as a shining cultural icon, representing

the heartbeat of American culture and trends. Since its humble beginnings as a Mexican settlement known as Yerba Buena, San Francisco has become one of the most influential and diverse cities in the United States.

From the treasure-hunting frenzy of the 1849 California Gold Rush to the devastating earthquake and fire of 1906 that destroyed incredible amounts of the city, San Francisco as a city has endured some fascinating periods of history. Most famously, during the 1950s, ‘60s, and ‘70s, San Francisco became a bohemian paradise, filled with artists, hippies, and those celebrating the counter-culture movement of the era. Countless numbers of musicians found their fame and success in the thriving artistic community of San Francisco. Artists were celebrated, cultural movements were born. There is almost too much about San Francisco’s colorful history and culture to even begin to describe it all!

San Francisco is a phenomenally eclectic city, from the history to the culture to the very neighborhoods and districts that make up this beautiful city. The city is carved up in to historic and iconic districts, each with its own vibe and claim to fame. Haight-Ashbury, Fisherman’s Wharf, the Mission District, Market Street: these are areas that are known far and wide for their distinctive styles.

But more than being an eclectic and exciting city, San Francisco is just downright beautiful. The picturesque hills and architecture of San Francisco give it an adventurous, almost fairy-tale like quality. One would be remiss to not mention the breathtaking vistas of the Pacific Ocean and the nearby bay or the spectacular feat of engineering that is the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. From the cool and beautiful weather to the vibrant city life, it is easy to see why San Francisco is one of the most fantastic destinations in the United States.

San Diego

Across the bay from sleek, up-tempo San Diego lies its equally picturesque alter-ego, Coronado Island, a sleepy resort community that has been a mecca to Hollywood stars and

sun-worshippers alike for almost a century. Hugged by the warm Pacific sun and tantalizingly close to Mexico, with its allure of fiesta and siesta, Coronado epitomizes the Southern California dream of luxurious escape and is only 15 miles from the campus of the American Language Institute in San Diego.

#1 BEACH IN THE U.S.A! Beating out the dazzling white sand beaches of Hawaii and the over-the-top glamour of the Miami “scene,” Coronado Beach was ranked America’s Best Beach of 2012. Considering weather, water quality, facilities and the look and feel of the sand to name a few out of 50 criteria, Professor Stephen P. Leatherman of Florida International University, nicknamed “Dr. Beach,” writes, “The beach is very flat, making it great for skim boarding and walking, and the sand has a silvery sheen because of the presence of mica.” The sparkling Pacific waters seem to bask in the glow of historical prestige emanating from the Hotel Del Coronado, where upscale tourists still wear white and ask, “tennis anyone?,” cocktails in hand.

It was here at the “Hotel Del,” as its name is often shortened, that Marilyn Monroe and Tony Curtis filmed Some Like it Hot, and where Charlie Chaplin and Frank Sinatra enjoyed bringing their special guests. Not surprising when you consider that, added to the unparalleled natural beauty of Coronado Island, locals are friendly and life seems to move at a much slower pace than on the busy streets of San Diego across the bridge. With its unique combo of laid-back California vibe and affluent, cosmopolitan chic, you won’t want to miss the weekend getaway opportunity afforded by unique, stunning Coronado Island.

From the quiet trickle of a mountain stream to the low roar of sparkling cascades, Tennessee is flowing with picturesque waterfalls. From the more popular, easily accessible falls, to the remote, impressive cataracts that reward a strenuous hike, visitors cannot help but fall in love with Tennessee’s plethora of picturesque waterfalls and grottos.

Visit Fall Creek Falls, the largest waterfall east of the Mississippi, or hike into the Smokies and feel the mist of beautiful Abrams Falls. Watch water pour over rock outcroppings at the impressive Ramsey Cascades, or visit Cane Creek Falls and see water plummet more than 125 feet into Cane Creek Gorge. Visit some of the better-known falls, or set out to discover some of the lesser known. Either way, it will be a trip well worthy of a camera.

Burgess Falls, one of the first Natural Areas, is on Tennessee’s Eastern Highland Rim and is noted for its scenic splendor. Sheer bluffs, narrow ridges, rolling water and abundant mixed forest, characterize this area. The 250-foot drop in the Falling Water River creates stunning scenery and overlooks and numerous waterfalls, a combined 300 feet in elevation. The park is home to over 300 species of trees and plants and an abundance of wildlife. A Native Butterfly Garden is located adjacent to the upper parking lot.

In the Eastern part of the Tennessee, Cane Creek Falls is the largest by volume of the many waterfalls in Fall Creek Falls State Park. The falls are easily seen from a pair of overlooks, but the best reviews require an exciting descent down the cable trail. Cane Creek Falls is located in Fall Creek Falls State Park. The park is named for the much higher Fall Creek Falls, but the much more voluminous Cane Creek is responsible for carving the impressive gorge that is responsible for all the other falls.

The falls can be viewed from two overlooks. One is very close to the Visitor center parking area, but the view is not very good. A better view can be had if you cross the swinging bridge above Cane Creek Cascades, and head up the trail towards Fall Creek Falls. From here you can also see Rockhouse Falls, which is adjacent to Cane Creek Falls.

A paradise of more than 20,000 acres sprawled across the eastern top of the rugged Cumberland Plateau, Fall Creek Falls State Park is one of the most scenic and spectacular outdoor recreation areas in America. Laced with cascades, gorges, waterfalls, streams and lush stands of virgin hardwood timber, the park beckons those who enjoy nature at her finest. While Fall Creek Falls, at 256 feet, is the highest waterfall in the eastern United States, other waterfalls in the park are Piney, Cane Creek Falls and Cane Creek Cascades.

The oak and hickory forest that covers most of the park gives way to tulip poplar and hemlock forest in the gorges. The plants and animals of the moist, protected gorges are not unlike the species found in southern Canada. Mountain laurel and rhododendron are abundant throughout the park, as are other plants and animals.

With its many amenities, including a Park Inn with 145 guest rooms and 5000 square feet of meeting and banquet space, 30 cabins and villas, 228 campsites, 2 group camps, a challenging 18-hole golf course and a gorgeous panoramic natural setting, it is little wonder that Southern Living magazine readers voted Fall Creek Falls the best state park in the Southeastern United States.

Fort Worth

The romantic mystique of the American cowboy has been popularized in thousands of films throughout the years. There’s something lonesome, rugged, bold, natural, and

adventurous about these legends of the Wild West that still fascinates us today. For over a hundred years, people from around the world have been drawn to Fort Worth, Texas to get a sense of what cowboy life and culture is really like. The place they go is the Fort Worth Stockyards where cattle driving meets bull riding, where juicy Texas barbecue is just an appetizer for good old-fashioned country western dancing, and where formal dress means a cowboy hat, leather belt, and a pair of boots.

As the second biggest state in the U.S., Texas has a lot of land, cattle, and a long history of cowboy culture. These horse-riding, lasso-roping people embody the idea of true freedom and invoke passion deep within the soul that longs for some sort of detachment from the modern technological world and a deeper connection with the natural countryside. As sharp as a cactus and as tough as a longhorn, Texas folk have always embraced cowboys and the cultural heritage they share with this great state. That’s why the Stockyards, a traditional cowboy hangout, are so important to the city of Fort Worth and popular with travelers and locals alike from around the world.

For any man or woman looking for an authentic Texas goodtime down at the Stockyards, it’s imperative that they know how to spot a real cowboy hat. Now a real cowboy hat is a wide-brimmed, high-crowned hat typically made out of leather, felt or straw. Most important is that a cowboy hat does what it’s designed for, and that is to keep the sun and rain out of your face, keep sweat from rolling in your eyes, and be a best friend and possible head rest if you’re ever out on the range some night with only the stars overhead.

In front of every cowboy hat, you’ll find a plate of barbecue. Barbecue is a way of cooking meat traditional to the American south. Texas barbecue, as anyone at the Stockyards will tell you, is the best in the world! There are lots of different styles, methods and traditions of barbecuing in the Lone Star State, but at the Fort Worth Stockyards, you can guarantee there’s going to be beef, and it’s going to be delicious. The Fort Worth Stockyards are a great experience for any international student looking for a little Texas country music and dancing, horse and bull riding cowboys and cowgirls, a great meal, and an unforgettable taste of the “City of Cowboys and Culture.”

Reading’s main campus includes a woodland area, known as The Wilderness, designated as a Wildlife Heritage Site and which includes many exotic waterfowl and champion trees not found elsewhere in the United Kingdom.

15 TIPS FOR ETIQUETTE AND BEHAVIOR IN ITALY

1. When it comes to introductions in Italy, be sure to shake hands with a firm grip and make sure to introduce yourself to women and older people first.

2. It is considered inappropriate to call someone by their first name before being invited to do so.

3. When visiting a church in Italy, it is very important to be properly dressed. In many churches, it is taboo to wear things such as tank tops, shorts or sleeveless dresses.

4. Table manners are rather formal in Italy. It would be considered strange to share food from your plate.

5. When dining out, you must ask for the check rather than wait for the server to bring it to you. Servers will not bring you the check unless it is requested.

6. Flowers, chocolate and bottles of wine are all appropriate gifts for your host if you are invited to an Italian home. When it comes to flowers, steer clear of Chrysanthemums, red flowers, and yellow flowers. Chrysanthemums symbolize sorrow and mourning and are often used for funerals. Red flowers symbolize romance and secrecy, while yellow flowers indicate jealousy and anger. In addition, Italians pay a lot of attention to gifts and gifts of high quality are appreciated.

7. It is considered rude for anyone to sit down before they have been invited to do so.

8. It is very impolite to ask a woman her age in Italy.

9. Arriving on time is of importance in Italy, but is considered acceptable to arrive 5-15 minutes late for most invitations.

10. When going out somewhere in Italy, one should dress nicely. Dressing poorly or improperly is not well received.

11. One should only drink cappuccinos in the morning, while an espresso can be taken at any time. It also not common to get coffee or food “to go” in Italy.

12. It is not recommended to phone Italians between the hours of 2pm and 4pm as some people still participate in the traditional afternoon nap.

13. In a small or medium-sized shop, it is customary to greet the shopkeeper or staff upon entering.

14. Asking questions such as “what do you do?” are considered overly personal and rude. Sticking to topics such as food, wine, soccer, current events and music are preferred.

15. Making direct eye contact is very common in Italy and it is thought of as disrespectful to look away as it can convey a lack of interest.

French, which you have the opportunity to learn during your time at The American Business School Paris, is the official language of both the United Nations and the Olympic Games.

The peasants’ famous storming of the Bastille prison-fortress that helped launch the French Revolution was largely symbolic? In fact, there were only seven prisoners being held there and thus subsequently liberated.

Over 50% of The American Business School Paris students come from abroad, and in all they represent 80 different nationalities.

Steeped in history, culture, and glamour, Paris has long inspired artists and intellectuals alike. Few cities can rival the City of Light’s reputation as a hub for fashion, gastronomy, and all

types of art.

The French are very proud when it comes to their cuisine. Amateurs and professionals flock to France, and particularly Paris, to study and experience food at its finest—gastronomie en France. La gastronomie can be traced throughout all other aspects of the French way of life and culture, too. Meals and meal-time, grocery shopping, tourism and more are all affected by this tradition—rich in more ways than one.

Along with food, language is arguably one of the most coveted and protects elements of the French culture. Though notoriously critical of foreign misuse of the French tongue, French people are normally delighted to converse with international students in the local language. To understand French attitudes toward language, it helps to know the immense emphasis placed on the preservation of the integrity of French, not just by the average French person but also by L’Academie française, the official body designated to monitor its usage and evolution.

The Seine River, which bisects Paris into its north (Right Bank or “Rive Droite”) and south (Left Bank or “Rive Gauche”) areas, is still regarded as emblematic of the city’s economy, politics, and art.

The two banks of the Seine each have distinct personalities- the spacious boulevards and formal buildings of the Right Bank and the cultural and intellectual reputation of the Left Bank- which contribute to the diversity of this magnificent city.

Paris is divided into 20 arrondissements, or districts, and each with a distinct character. The 1st is the “point zero” of Paris, where the city was founded, and is home to the Louvre, Notre Dame, the Tuileries gardens, the Prefecture, and much more. In the 3rd is the famed “Centre Pompidou”, just north of Hotel de Ville, found in the 4th district. The 5th, once the “academic soul” of Paris, is where the Sorbonne was founded. This is one of the most famous parts of Paris, and is widely known as the Latin Quarter. Just as the 5th is referred to as the Latin Quarter, the 6th arrondissement is known as “St Germain des-Pres”. It was once the hot-spot for writers, including Ernest Hemingway.

As one of the largest cities in Europe and the French capital, Paris is a political and economic hub, therefore a natural host for international residents, students and visitors alike. Studying at the American Business School Paris provides students with the wonderful opportunity to experience life in one of the world’s most fascinating and enchanting cities.

Antonio de Nebrija, namesake of the Nebrija University, published the first grammar of the Castilian Spanish language in 1492, the same year Columbus landed in the New World.

Though Madrid is situated at an altitude of 600 meters about sea level and lies over 300 kilometers from the sea, madrileños are rivaled only by the Japanese in per capita consumption of fish and seafood.

Nebrija is one of the few universities to offer a degree in executive coaching: not sports coaching, but helping entrepreneurs to realize their potential.

Overview of the city:COMILLAS (POPULATION: 2,497)Comillas is situated in one of Europe’s truly breathtaking spots: perched between the Cantabrian Sea and the dramatic backdrop of the Picos de Europa mountains. Originally a Jesuit university, the hilltop campus of CIESE was purchased in 2005 by the Comillas Foundation, an alliance featuring the autonomous Cantabrian government, the University of Cantabria and Banco Santander, in order to promote the learning of Spanish language, culture and history in this uniquely spectacular setting. Students of Spanish will find that few residents speak a second language, meaning that whether you’re in class, at the beach or sampling northern Spain’s famous culinary delights, you’re bound to be immersed in your target language.

SPECIAL PROGRAMSDELE Course Preparation: Preparatory course for students planning to obtain the Diploma in Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE), the  official qualification of Spanish language for non-native speakers, recognized officially by the Ministry of Education and awarded by the Cervantes Institute. This qualification is required by a large number of institutions and foreign universities in order to certify the students’ level and competency in the Spanish language.

Spanish Language and Hispanic Culture courses: An ideal pathway for non-native Spanish-speakers planning to study in a Spanish university, these courses are offered at various lengths throughout the year and were designed specifically for students of varying proficiencies hoping to master the Spanish language. In addition, students at the appropriate level may have the opportunity to participate in sessions on Hispanic culture.

UNIVERSITY HIGHLIGHTS An acknowledged world leader in the teaching of Spanish as a second language, CIESE-Comillas was established as a Centre of Higher Education dedicated to the promotion of excellence in the field of Spanish education. An affiliated center of the nearby University of Cantabria, CIESE was created in order to promote the diffusion of the Spanish language and culture through undergraduate and graduate educational programs designed with a uniquely international perspective. Because of Comillas’ mild weather and natural beauty, top Spanish faculty from throughout Spain are attracted to CIESE for short-term teaching stints, giving students access to top researchers from other universities.

Comillas is a picturesque beach town located on Spain’s gorgeous northern coast. This region of Spain, called Cantabria, became an autonomous community in 1981, but

its cultural roots go back even early than the Roman occupation of Iberia—in fact, Cantabria’s many world-famous cave drawings (nine different caves here have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites) establish that human civilization thrived here as as early as 15,000 years ago.

The Cantabrian Coast, or España Verde as it is sometimes known, retains much that’s distinctive. Tourists looking for fiesta and siesta are likely think they’ve wandered by accident across the border of Ireland: steady rainfall irrigates a landscape of rolling green hills, and cowbells and bagpipes rather than the flamenco sounds associated with other parts of Spain fill the air.

In addition to its beautiful landscape, the region is also endowed with plenty of manmade marvels: dazzling Romanesque churches, historic stone cottages with their wrought-iron balconies primly decorated with bright flowers, and modernist gems like Antonio Gaudi’s eccentric El Capricho palace, in the heart of Comillas, are just some of the features that make Cantabria so original.

Add to these curiosities the proud, defiant spirit of the Cantabros themselves—Spain’s own tribe of Highlanders who held out successfully against the Romans and later the Moors—and you may begin to get the flavor of a place known, in the local vernacular, as “la tierruca.”

The miniscule Netherlands, covering only 41,000 square kilometers, is inhabited by roughly 16 million people, most of them ethnically Dutch but more than 10% of whom are

foreign-born. Renowned for their friendliness, open-mindedness, and entrepreneurial spirit, the Dutch have contributed many important names to the fields of commerce, art, philosophy and science. The country also has a long history as an international trade hub, and thanks to early contributions to maritime navigation and exploration, the Dutch since the 17th century have enjoyed a significant global cultural and commercial influence.

As is appropriate in a nation that’s proven so welcoming to pleasure-seekers, study at Venlo is not “all work and no play.” Venlo’s International Student Union offers plenty of extracurricular activities so that international students can meet each other as well as getting to know the locals. Off campus, in the city of Venlo, you’ll find no shortage of entertainment options: theatres, cinema, pubs and bars. Quaint nearby cities and towns such as Maastricht and Roermond are within easy reach by public transport, and never fail to charm.

Bordered by Germany to the east and Belgium to the south, Venlo is a perfect starting point for fun and stress-free weekend trips to its nearby neighbours. Two historic cultural capitals of Germany, Düsseldorf and Cologne, are just over an hour by train while Antwerp, Belgium, is only about an hour and a half away making it easy to share in the delightful diversity Western Europe has to offer.

For culture vultures there’s Venlo’s Limburgs Museum, exhibiting modern and contemporary architecture, as well as Zomerparkfeest, the largest free, multi-day festival in the Netherlands. Taking place in the center of Venlo each summer, it features over 80 bands on multiple stages, drawing 20,000 fans each day of its four days. In addition to music from a variety of genres, the festival also features dance, theater, film, literature, art, and science.

If you are feeling more adventurous, Eindhoven, a city in the North Brabant province, is a short trip away from Venlo and can be visited on the weekend. Its claim to fame is open air art, uniquely expressed throughout parks within the region Eindhoven is also known for impromptu, alternative art. For example, the Berenkuil is a free zone for graffiti artists in the city where police cannot disrupt artistic activity. As a result, artists have created several large and impressive works on the walls and the area has become an unofficial open air museum. This and other cities have lured visitors from all over and they are sure to provide interactions and experiences of a lifetime.

Did YouKnow?

The origin of Euskera, the indigenous Basque language spoken by 27% of the population of Pais Vasco, remains a mystery even after centuries of research.

Deusto’s Language Center offers fully accredited courses in Euskera, Spanish for foreigners, English, French, German and Chinese. The center also has an area of translation and other language services.

Though you’ll hear references to the Deusto campus being on banks of the River Nervión, actually the Nervión is an estuary meaning that the water flows inland from the Cantabrian Sea.

Home to more international organizations than any other European capital, including the European Union, the European Parliament and NATO, students in Brussels are at the heart of international affairs. Multicultural and multilingual, this sprawling metropolis of parks, squares and boulevards has evolved into the perfect example of a global society that has managed to retain its own distinctive personality. 11 STEPS TO EARNING YOUR DEGREE ABROAD: How the Process WorksAGU is a truly global organization with offices in nearly 20 different countries, and we fully understand that a one-size-fits-all approach cannot do justice to the diversity of cultural attitudes about higher education and approaches to the application process.

In fact, it’s precisely because we know there is appreciable regional and cultural variation in the ways students conduct research and select study opportunities that we feel so sure that our personalized, team-based approach to college guidance counselling is the right strategy to help our students succeed. We know that some students are focused on prestige factors, others on employment prospects, and still others on scholarship opportunities or degree recognition.

What nearly all international students have in common, though, is that they lack vital information about the process they are embarking upon, and this is because—quite understandably, not having applied before to an overseas university—they are unfamiliar with the norms and requirements of the destination country. Our global AGU team makes up for this lack of experience by putting you in touch with the person or team of persons best suited to help you. In most cases, you’ll have direct access to a person who has lived and studied in some of the places you’re considering, meaning we’ll be replacing your doubts with careful advice earned through real life experience.

That said, we do feel it’s possible to break down the process into a simple series of steps that apply more or less equally to all applicants, regardless of home and destination country:

1. MAKE CONTACT WITH AGU. There are different ways prospective students and AGU find one another, but in every case the first step is simply to reach out!

2. FILL OUT A STUDENT PROFILE FORM. Once a student has expressed interest in an AGU degree program, we will send the student the AGU Student Profile. This form allows us to see each unique individual in the context of her or his academic background and strengths, areas of interest, language abilities, career goals and proposed target countries for future study. Developing a deeper knowledge and understanding of each student helps us to most effectively and accurately advise the student on available program options.

3. RECEIVE A CUSTOMIZED LIST OF RECOMMENDED PROGRAMS. Once we receive your completed student profile form, our staff around the world will work together to customize a list of recommended programs based on your background, goals and interests. In additional to useful program information, this list will tell you about the costs and eligibility requirements associated with each study option. In most cases, this document will include both AGU member universities as well as non-member schools we feel may be appropriate for you so you have a more comprehensive landscape of your options.

4. SELECT A UNIVERSITY. Your customized list of program recommendations will help you to compare your options and ultimately decide on the program(s) to which you would like to apply. AGU can not only point you to previously unfamiliar top schools in geographic and academic areas of interest to you, but can also broaden the range of your choices by telling you about unique study opportunities in parts of the world you might not have previously considered. As you review your options, AGU will be there every step of the way to help answer your questions and offer support as you make this very important decision.

5. CONSULT WITH THE AGU TEAM. Early on in the process, we will introduce you to AGU Academic Consultants in your region of residence as well as in the region in which you intend to pursue your studies. Our team will work closely with you through in-person or virtual meeting session as you navigate your options. Once you are ready to move forward with the admissions process, we will meet regularly to review your application matierals, discuss the student visa process, and help you take care of the logistical details of pursuing a degree program abroad.

6. COMPLETE THE APPLICATION. Through the application, you formally provide the university with all the information it routinely solicits from applicants, as well as any supporting documents. As you complete the admissions process, AGU staff will explain each material required for admissions, keep you informed of important deadlines, review your documents for accuracy, and can offer helpful tips along the way so that you can be sure your application not only is correct, but stands out from the crowd.

7. ACCEPT AN OFFER. While AGU can not guarantee your acceptance into any university, we do consider your academic profile in relation to the university’s eligibility requirements when making recommendations in order to help increase the likelihood of acceptance. As you begin to receive admissions offers, you can work with your family, friends, and AGU Academic Consultants to compare your offers and determine which path is best for you.

8. OBTAIN YOUR VISA. Normally as an international student you’ll be asked to apply for a visa, meaning that government of the country in which you wish to study has to formally grant you permission to live there during your study period. Depending on where you’re from and where you’re headed, the process can range from a simple and straightforward boilerplate stamp to a protracted bureaucratic ordeal, complete with biometrics appointments and elaborate bank statements. But for all the anxieties that sometimes attend this process, AGU is there to answer all your questions and ease your mind by providing you with easy timelines and clear instructions.

9. ARRANGE HOUSING. Once you’ve been accepted to study at one of your chosen schools, it’s time to decide on a housing option. AGU will demystify this process by describing housing options available through the university as well as more independent options in safe neighbourhoods nearby. We will help you to ensure that you have somewhere to stay upon your arrival, and eliminate surprises by helping you to clarify what exactly is included in each option.

10. WORK OUT LOGISTICS. Now that you know where you’ll be going to school and where you’ll be living, the final steps involve preparing yourself academically, physically and emotionally for your degree abroad. If your acceptance offer was conditional, you may need to enroll in a summer course or prepare additional paperwork. Have you arranged your flight and determined how you will get from that airport to your accommodations? Do you have your student health care package lined up and can you get all the medications you need in your destination country? Will it be cold or hot upon your arrival, and what should you pack to fit in with the locals? Finally, how can you be ready for the inevitable culture shock of your arrival in a totally new part of the world? AGU is here to answer all these questions for you and will provide you with materials prior to your departure to help you better prepare for your program abroad.

11. SEND US A POSTCARD. AGU continues to wish you the best even after your program starts, and we love hearing from our students. If you are having trouble communicating with the university or just want to tell us how much you love life in your new city, never hesitate to reach out.
