A/H1N1 pdm in turkey breeder

• First detection in humans in Mexico 2009

• Described in the turkey breeders: Chile 2009, Canada 2009, USA 2010, UK 2010 , Norway 2016

Marked Egg Drop w/o mortality

• High genetic similarity with circulating strains of H1N1 pdm(2009) suggested humans as source of infection and likely during Artificial Insemination procedures

Clinical case

• On monday 15th April 2019 a Turkey Breeder Company located in Northeastern Italy

called the Official Veterinary Authority complaining for a sudden and drastic drop in egg

production in barns 1-2-3 (hens of 48 weeks), the male breeders were located in barn 4

• Egg drop production in turkey breeder was associated to human A/H1N1pdm (Biosecurity issues )

• Tracheal swabs collected during the Egg Drop resulted negative in r-RT PCR (Barn1 and 2)

• Infected hens and stags presented tracheal and cloacal shedding up 8 days post case confimation (15th April) and cloacal sheeding seems to be predominat in late stage of infection

• Although viral dissemination in tissues and specific tropism for reproductivetract, vertical transmission and egg-borne dissemination of pH1N1 seems not tobe a potential threat

• In1-day poults maternal antibody were detected in 23% of birds

Discussion and conclusion

Page 18: A/H1N1 pdm in a Turkey Breeder Farm in Northeastern Italy · A/H1N1 pdm in turkey breeder •First detection in humans in Mexico 2009 •Described in the turkey breeders: Chile 2009,

Discussion and conclusion

• The behaviour of viral dissemination in the affected barns, serology data and viral infection in stags (barn 4) suggest a possible horizzontal transmission ofvirus between barns

• NGS of clinical samples (tracheal swabs) put in evidence a potentialmechanism of viral adaptation in hens of barn 3 and a change in receptorbinding preference in stags of barn 4
