necessary. Look at the picture carefully, taking note of details. Practise describing the picture.

Here are some pointers to prepare your child for PSLE oral examination.
READING ALOUD
1. Pronunciation. Differentiate between long and short vowels (pill vs peel, cut vs cart, pull vs pool) Take note of consonants (th as in thin, not to be pronounced as “t” or “d”). Differentiate and pronounce ending consonants (“t” and “d”, “p” and “b”, “k” and
“g”, “s” and “ed”)

Smooth delivery with no hesitations.2. Pause at appropriate places.3. Read at a suitable pace, not too fast or too slow.4. Using intonation (rising or falling) tone to reflect events or dialogue.5. Read audibly, make sure you are not too soft.6. Incorporate expression in reading so as not to be monotonous.7. Do not skip words that you are unsure of. Make an attempt to read them.
PICTURE DISCUSSION
1. Use appropriate and extensive vocabulary.2. Describe in detail.3. Substantiate description with explanations and interpretations.4. Use a methodical approach to description for example, clockwise or anticlockwise

WHILE WAITING TO BE EXAMINED
1. Each candidate is given 5 minutes to prepare. Make good use of it.2. Practise reading the passage to yourself.3. Pay attention to words which are difficult to pronounce.4. Try pronouncing the difficult words phonetically.5. Study the picture for picture discussion, taking note of the details.6. Practise what you will be saying for picture conversation to the examiners.7. Do not waste any time, reexamine the two sections carefully.
EXAMINATION ETIQUETTE 1. Leave your belongings outside the examination room.2. Knock on the door and wait for the examiners’ permission before entering the
examination room.3. Greet the examiners.4. State your name and index number.5. Sit down and make yourself comfortable.6. Begin only when told to do so by examiners.7. When you have finished, get up and not drag your chair.8. Thank the examiners before leaving.
