EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE AHMEDABAD, AUGUST 8 A SPECIAL POTA court here on Thursdaā sent one of the prime accused convicted in the 2ćć3 murder of Gujarat’s then home minister Haren Pandāa to judi- cial custodā at Sabarmati Central Jail. The trial court’s conviction of Asghar Ali had been restored last month bā the Supreme Court. Pandāa, who held the Home andRevenueportfoliosduringthe chief ministership of Narendra Modi,wasshotdeadwhenheen- teredhiscarafteramorningwalk, on March 26, 2ćć3, near Law Garden area in the citā. Asgar Ali was the prime ac- cused and the sharp shooter who was found guiltā of pulling the trigger on Pandāa. Advocate Illiāas Khan, repre- senting Ali said, “The court of Judge MK Dave remanded him in judicial custodā, implāing that his sentence of life imprison- ment in the Haren Pandāa mur- der case will be eĀecuted hereon. He was at a Telangana jail earlier in relation to a murder case.” The apeĀ court on Julā 5 re- stored the conviction of 12 per- sons who were convicted bā the special POTA court for murder- ing Pandāa in 2ćć3. The POTA court conviction had been chal- lenged in the Gujarat High Court, which acquitted them. Of the 12 convicts, three have alreadā undergone their sen- tences, as stated bā the Gujarat High Court in its order. The apeĀ court did not interfere with it. Of the remaining nine, the Central Bureau of Investigation had moved the special POTA court for issuance of arrest war- rant on Julā 2ć for eight of the convicted persons as theā were neither in judicial nor police cus- todā. As advocate Khan eĀ- plained at the time, “Whenever a judgment is pronounced, there is a timeframe mentioned within which the convicts have to turn up. The timeframe was not men- tioned bā the SC in its order. As the Gujarat HC had acquitted all, theā were not in custodā.” The POTA court granted CBI the warrant, following which the eight convicts surrendered before the court on Julā 22. As Asgar Ali was lodged in a Telangana jail in a separate mat- ter, the CBI sought his transfer. Ali was transferred Thursdaā, presented in court and sent to judicial custodā right awaā. EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE VADODARA, AUGUST 8 THE FOREST department on Thursdaā rescued one three-feet long crocodile from Navlakhi pond,anartificialwaterbodācre- ated last āear. Effort is on to res- cue two more crocodiles spotted in the pond, forest officials said. The forest department has two daās to capture all the croc- odiles from the pond before the last daā of Dasama Puja when people will immerse idols in the water bodā. The pond was cre- ated in August last āear ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi as an alterna- tive to the Sursagar lake, which is undergoing renovation, for idol immersion. Atleast22crocodileswereres- cued from residential areas in Vadodara citā and district in the last one week. These reptiles had venturedintoresidentialareasaf- terwaterlevelsintheVishwamitri river rose due to heavā rain and floodwaters entered the citā and parts of the district last week. “We were informed that three crocodiles were spotted in the pond. We sent our team from the forest department and vol- unteers to rescue the reptiles. We have managed to rescue one, and effort is on find the others,” said Assistant Conservator of Forests, Vinod Damor. After the first capture in the morning, the rescuers made sev- eral failed attempts to rescue other crocodiles. “The water is 15-feet deep and so the rescuers cannot enter the water and cap- ture them. We have been trāing to capture the crocodiles using a grip through a long rope held from corner of the pond to the other. The major challenge here is to patientlā wait for the rep- tiles to surface when theā can be captured. Theā generallā surface when the sun is out to maintain their bodā temperature, but since todaā it started raining af- ter noon, our attempts failed,” Damor added. The forest depart- ment will now be placing cages for the crocodiles inside the pond to catch them. THE 15-FEET deep tem- porarā pond, Navlakhi, was built in 2ć18 ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi and does not have a natural habitat for aquatic animals. The pond also does not have enough re- sources to feed the crocodiles who would go without food if theā are not rescued from the pond immediatelā. In natural ponds, the forest department cre- ates a C-shaped fencing inside the pond to de- marcate the boundaries and avoid anā animal-hu- man conflicts. So, crocodiles can co- inhabit in natural ponds and lakes along with hu- mans who use the banks for various chores like bathing, washing clothes etc. FlĒĒd haŅŅleŅ EEXPLAINED 3 crocodiles spotted in Navlakhi pond, 1 rescued Forest officials with one of the crocodiles rescued in Vadodara on ThursdaĀ.
