In retrospect, Term 1 of 2013/2014 academic year started with new and returning students spiritedly entering our school compound with such enthusiasm and energy that it was certainly a wonderful sight to behold. The term seemed to have flown by so very quickly with the numerous interesting events laid out for the students.

Events such as Fun Run, Back To Nature and Halloween Day celebration have brought cheers and excitement to the students who participated in them eagerly and anxiously that culminated in great success. It was certainly

exciting and thrilling to watch our students especially the primary students who came to school dressed in costumes of various genres embracing the spirit of Halloween Day.

A job well done by the English department for having successfully organised a public speaking contest, with the aim to encourage our secondary students to develop self-confidence and skills in speaking confidently in public.

October 14 was a meaningful day in that the school witnessed the installation of the new primary prefects and announcement of

the new office-bearers of the Primary Prefects Board. We are confident that the Prefects Board and its members will serve the school student community well.

With the elections of the new Student Council for the 2013/2014 academic year in October, we bade farewell to the outgoing 2013 Student Council which had done a tremendous job in executing their duties which included fundraising and various other projects. We would like to thank each and every one of them for their valuable services to the school.

On the 18 October we held our annual Fun Run event at the Austin Heights Golf and Country Resort. The event was enthusiastically supported by students and staff alike, and a great day was had by all. This year the running routes were made longer than the previous year (up to 4km), setting a real challenge for the students. For the Early Years students who were too young to run, a ‘Back to Nature’ programme was held.

A SPOOKTACULAR DAY AT AUSTIN HEIGHTSINTERNATIONAL SCHOOL31st October 2013

Vampires, zombies, ghosts, mad mothers with bloody children, Slender Man and other terrible creatures came together on the 31 October at Austin Heights International School for one of the most spooktacular meetings they could have. In the protective shade of the school hall, these horribly amazing creatures gathered to conspire for the most awaited event of this term: the Halloween Celebration.

Under the masks of the vampires, zombies or under the make-up of bloody mothers we could distinguish innocent students with genuine smiles on their faces and happiness in their eyes. They all dressed up and applied the most original make-up for the Halloween costumes competition. They were so inventive in the dress-up they chose that even their teachers had a hard time in recognizing them.

The show was opened by Ms. Yvonne and Mr Michael, the super MC’s for the event, followed by the Principal, who delivered a wickedly encouraging speech, especially for the students participating in the dress-up contest.

Much as we liked seeing everyone wearing fancy or creepy make-up and costumes, we were all awfully curious to find out more about the celebration which had the power to bring together unearthly creatures in a symbiosis of fun and fear. Therefore, Mr Michael’s mission was to brief the audience with a chillingly short and meaningful history of Halloween. Apparently, what was nowadays celebrated for the sake of entertainment started in the past as a celebration in the honour of the ones who passed away, in order to

calm down their spirits and to alleviate their sins in the after-life.

The much-awaited costume contest followed the presentation on Halloween. The abominably interesting categories were: beautiful, creative, scary and funny. The students came on stage, according to their age group and to the category they fit into. The judges were Ms Meera, Ms Kim, and Mr James.

Such a creative display of costumes needed some time for choosing the best ones. So, in the meantime, while the panel was deliberating on the winners, a group of students performed a thematic dance. Everyone was impatiently waiting for the winners to be announced and the choices of the jury seemed to match the favourite costumes of the audience, because the entire hall freakily applauded the fortunate winners.

And when everyone expected the day to come to an end with the student dress-up competition, Mr Michael “dropped” the element of surprise: the teachers who also wore costumes on that day would compete and receive awards. Mr Wafi, Ms Kim, Ms Angeline, Ms Meera and Ms Priscilla proved to us that Halloween is a celebration that brings everyone together, irrespective of age or status. The joy of an international celebration and the wish to see the students enjoying all their moments at school inspired those teachers to put on an enchanted attire, in an enjoyably spooky conspiration.

The Halloween celebration was a real success, everyone enjoyed the activities and the happiness in the children’s eyes confirmed Austin Heights’ magic ability to be a place where education, TOGETHERness, and WElcoming feelings combine in an EXCELlent manner.

Years 4A, 4U and 4S students started their entry point by drawing a portrait of themselves. They did this activity for the theme “Paintings, Pictures and Photographs”. The students were first introduced to some famous pictures, paintings and photographs from around the world and then they were briefed on the similarities and differences of these three words. Students shared their portraits with their classmates, and the classrooms were quickly transformed into art galleries.

YEAR 4Theme: Pictures, Paintings & Photographs

Year 3A, 3U and 3S students learned about how fossils came about in the theme “Dinosaurs”. They had the chance to look at pictures of dinosaurs’ fossils and learned how paleontologists look for the fossils. At the end of the topic the students tried to create their own dinosaur fossils out of clay. With imagination they devised creative ideas. Their work were very well done.
