Live Beyond The Edge Of Reason

Page 2: Ahupe ghat

The Bards

uneet Puri was hooked to a life in the outdoors ever

since her father took her rock climbing at the age of 5.

Trekking and climbing have been a passion with her

and she has been trekking the Uttarakhand Himalayas since her

school days. She has also trekked in Nepal. She is something of

a dare devil and to challenge herself she often treks solo.

G

hashi Bahuguna has been an avid trekker and climber most of her life. She is almost a mountain goat, having grown up in a Kamouni Village and having spent her

childhood in the arms of the mountains. She met Anusha and Guneet on an expedition in the Himalayas. She too treks solo or Alpine style when the mood takes her. She is also a trained rescuer.

S

nusha Subramanian, an award winning journalist, started her trekking career in the Sayadri ranges at the tender age of 7 and had covered most of it by the

time she reached her teens. She started walking the Himalayas in 2006 and has trekked across all 5 Himalayan states. She has also trekked extensively abroad.

The Bohemian Way

ur philosophy with regards to BA is simple, "of the mountains, for the mountains and by the mountains".

We view the mountains as our home and as we do what we do best here, climb and trek, we also aim to give back to our

home by providing a sustainable economic scenario to its residents.

As far as possible we try to provide our clients a glimpse into the

lives of the mountain folk, their culture and traditions with home stays along our trek routes.

Our vision for the years to come includes the promotion of women

in the sport of mountaineering both as team leaders and guides. We also hope to lead by example by having stricter and more

stringent safety and environmental guidelines implemented in the Himalayas.

The Trek

Ahupe Ghat, is one of the most beautiful treks in the monsoon. Ahupe Ghat is a pass which starts from Khopivili to Ahupe Vilage and is at a height of 3855 feet. The route by road is from Murbad-Mhasa-Narivili ( base of Siddhagad)-Dehne (base of Gorakhghad and Machindragad)-Khopivili. The Ghat drops vertically to the Konkan all around Ahupe, and there are many narrow gorges, with breathtaking drops. The route from Khopiwali to Ahupe, near its upper reaches, is very narrow, and almost a gorge. It is a 4 hour walk through paddy fields, wading through the streams, and forest. Once you cross the forest the trek takes you to the base of the ghat and from here onwards it’s a steep climb through rocks to the beautiful Ahupe Plateau. The view from the Ahupe Plateau is picturesque and enchanting. It’s lush green during the monsoons with deep valley and waterfalls all around. The twin peaks of Gorakhgad and Machindragad is an awesome site from the plateau. Ahupe village has a lake and an irrigation system. It looks like a remote hamlet because on one side, is the steep drop to the Konkan, and on the other three sides, there is a mountain range enclosing it, cutting it off from the Deccan plateau proper. One can stay here at the school or in any village house.

The Trek

19 kms walk from Ahupe brings you to Kondhawal, a beautiful village nestled between hills. The walk to Kondwal is picturesque with dense forest cover and is breathtaking during the monsoons. The village is blanketed in mist and fog . You will also come across meandering streams which further expands into a river and falls into a deep gorge at Kondwal village. This is the Kondwal waterfall. This is the nearest village near Bhimashankar. Bhimashankar is a popular trek and also a pilgrim destination as one of the Jyotirlings of Lord Shiva adorns this 1005 mts (3296 ft) peak. The beautiful temple at the top of Bhimashankar has a huge bell from the time of the Portugese were in India. The best time to do this trek is June to September during the monsoons, although in winters too its beautiful. Bhimashankar is one of the wild life sanctuaries of the state and is very popular for its fauna. In winter one can spot the migratory birds and Sep- Oct is good time for citing butterflies and moths. The Indian Giant Squirrel, which is also the state animal of Maharashtra can be spotted here. The Bhimashankar sanctuary is also home to the Leopards.
