WELCOMEIt gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the Irish Open
Accordion Festival incorporating and celebrating the 40th All-Ireland Accordion Festival.
On behalf of the Irish Accordion Association I extend a warm welcome to all players and guests from all countries and hope you have an enjoyable and musically rewarding weekend.
This is the first time we have had an international competitive festival since 1992 and the first time ever that all sections have been open to all players.
We welcome our special adjudicator from Italy, Renzo Ruggieri who appeared as a guest artist at one of our All-Ireland Accordion Festivals many years ago. Since that time he has established himself as one of the most eminent jazz accordionists in Italy and Europe.
We also welcome back Ian Watson and for the first time Julie North who will be adjudicating for us on Saturday morning. They will also be appearing along with Renzo in our special Saturday night concert which is not to be missed. This will also feature a special re-union orchestra made up of past members of senior bands who have competed at All-Ireland Festivals over the past 40 years.
A special thanks goes to Paddy Kavanagh who along with Sean Kearney founded the Irish Accordion Association all those years ago. Paddy has kindly donated the magnificent brass harp trophies for this special event. I would also mention in closing that there are no report sheets for competitors this year but everyone will receive a special certificate for their performance.
I wish the very best to all the performers this weekend.
John Chilton
Chairman, Irish Accordion Association
