Chair’s Corner

The April Monthly Meeting features our annual Student Poster Competition. Our AIChE Chicago local section believes it is im-portant to encourage and support the undergraduate and gradu-ate chemical engineering student community. We do this in sev-eral ways.

We have a discounted rate to our monthly meetings in order to encourage students to attend. At the monthly meetings, students can network with professionals, learn technical topics, and discover all the career paths a chemical engineer can have.

Our annual Student Poster Competition gives graduate and undergraduate stu-dents an opportunity to showcase their research and open a dialogue about their research with professionals. For students not involved in research, it gives senior design students an opportunity to practice speaking about their senior design pro-jects in preparation for their final presentation.

In 2015, the AIChE Chicago Section awarded its first of an annual scholarship. Spearheaded by then Chair, Azita Ahmadzadeh, the scholarship was created to fos-ter engineering education and recognize student involvement in the local section. The annual scholarship continues on, and we are proud to continue to support the engineering education of our chemical engineering students! If you would like help us in this effort and contribute to the scholarship fund, please read on in the news-letter for more information.

The engagement and involvement of the student chemical engineering community

is important to our local section, and I hope that you can help us continue this en-

gagement by attending the annual Student Poster Competition and April monthly

meeting. After all, students today will be our co-workers, contributors, and leaders

of tomorrow!

April Meeting Speaker Information

“Amine Scrubbing for Carbon Capture and Storage: History

Repeats Itself”

Prof. Gary Rochelle

Abstract: Amine scrubbing for CO2 capture from coal- and gas-fired power plants is technically feasible and can be demonstrated. It can be deployed at full-scale in 5 to 10 years. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) by amine scrubbing will increase the cost of electricity production by 50 to 100%, so it will only happen with government incen-tives. Amine scrubbing is here to stay. No other technology will signifi-cantly reduce the cost of CO2 capture.

Biography:

Gary T. Rochelle is the Carol and Henry Groppe Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He has mentored 110 graduate students working on air pollution control from coal-fired power plants, acid gas treating, and CO2 capture. He currently mentors 8 PhD students working on CO2 capture from coal-fired power plants by amine scrubbing. Their most significant contribution has been the development of the piperazine process for CO2 capture.

Young Professionals News

Whirlyball Summary On March 8

th , 2018

YPC had its 10th annual

whirlyball tournament at

the Lombard location of

Whirlyball. 15 attendees

got the chance to play

Whirlyball with fellow

young professionals and

undergrads, while shar-

ing pizzas and snacks.

We had many new peo-

ple attending this event.

Everyone had a very

good time, and they had

the opportunity to get to

know each other in a casual setting. YPC events are a good opportunity for network-

ing, so we hope to see a few more new faces at our next event!

AIChE Chicago Section Scholarship Fund

My fellow AIChE members;

Someday we shall all want to retire and enjoy the fruits of our labors. Toward that goal, we need to plan and train our re-

placements to follow our example. You can do that with little effort by encouraging the next generation of engineers to enter

and continue their education in our field and practice chemical engineering as a professional.

For this purpose, the AIChE Chicago Section has established a Scholarship, available to currently enrolled or planning to

enroll in an ABET credited college or university of their choice in a chemical engineering discipline. The scholarship is also

available to the immediate family of AIChE Chicago section members.

By contributing to the principal of the Scholarship Fund, which is separate from the section operating funds, you can help us

make that happen. We, as a technical society, need to continually find and encourage the talented students to become engi-

neers and bring them into our profession. Small contributions now will pay big dividends in the future.

Please consider a donation to the AIChE Chicago Section Scholarship Fund by:

a. funding immediate need,

b. contributing to the endowment of the scholarship program, or

c. both.

Students or parents affiliated with the AIChE Chicago local section (students attended a high school or attending an ABET

credited college or university in the serving area and participant parents in the local section events) can apply for this schol-

arship. The total amount of the scholarship for each individual is a maximum of $2000 over four (4) years of enrollment,

which needs to be renewed annually.

To contribute, please make your check payable to AIChE Chicago Section Scholarship Fund, and mail it to:
