Jakarta Sneak Peek

Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia. As the metropolitan city which occupied more

than 9 million people of population, Jakarta is filled with such a unique diversity of

tribes, language, culture, and traditions. Therefore, the city is truly a ‘Melting Pot’ of

representatives from throughout the archipelago.

Jakarta also has a lot of place to be visited which can be the tourist attractions. You

can also find lots of shopping malls around the city. If we talk about cuisine, Jakarta

has a vast range of food available from all over the country in which you can also

find Chinese food, Japanese food, and many other international foods as well as the

local food such as kerak telor, soto betawi, and many more. So, welcome to Jakarta!

CLIMATE

Lying near the equator, Jakarta is round with hot and humid climate with 12 hours

supply of daylight. The rainy season falls from late October to early May although the

rain can occur throughout the year, averaging 1.791 mm. The dry season falls

between July and September. The temperatures in Jakarta are fairly even

throughout the year, averaging around the maximum of 340C and the minimum of

250C.

CULTURE

Jakarta has its own Betawi culture which is a treasure trove of color, tradition, song,

dance, clothing, language, dialect, and cuisine. The culture thrives today due to

government policy to enhance the

cultural identity of the original

inhabitants of the city, and prevent

their traditions being buried beneath

a tide of modernization. There are

annual parades and other

celebrations in which three-meter

tall Betawi mascots (ondelondel) -

are seen delighting the crowds with

their large masks and tinsel-

sprinkled headdresses.

HOW TO Get to Jakarta

Jakarta is the capital and the central business city of Indonesia. As one of the

popular tourist destinations in Indonesia, Jakarta is very easy to reach. There are

many transportation linking Jakarta and many cities of Indonesia. You can choose

either you want to go by airplane, by train, or by bus. If you are from overseas you

can get to Jakarta by air.

By Air

The fastest and the most pleasant way to get to

Jakarta is by airplanes. Jakarta’s international

airport, Soekarno-Hatta, connects main cities in

Indonesia and also many cities throughout the

globe. You can choose local airlines such as

Garuda Indonesia, Lion Air, Batavia Air, Citilink,

Sriwijaya Air, and Air Asia.

By Train

Train is a convenient means to get to Jakarta

especially for those of you who look for

affordable transportation departing from

around Java. There are 3 classes of Train

Service in Indonesia; Executive, Business, and

Economy. Executive Trains are equipped with

air-conditioning facility and Business Trains

are non AC. Business train ensures a safe

journey but not as highly comfortable as the

Executive train. So, for the long journey,

Page 9: AIESEC Indonesia Youth Leadership Conference 2012 1st Delegate Mailing

Executive Train might be the better choice. In Jakarta, the trains arrive in major

stations such as Gambir Station (GMR) and Pasar Senen Station (PSE). You can

find more information about the train schedules from PT Kereta Api Indonesia at

http://kereta-api.co.id/jadwal-ka.html. Here are the departure stations from around

Java:

City Departure Station

Semarang Semarang Tawang Station (SMT)

Yogyakarta Yogyakarta Tugu Station (YK)

Surabaya Surabaya Pasarturi Station (SBI) Surabaya Gubeng Station (SGU)

Malang Malang Station (ML)

By Road

You can also get to Jakarta by road.

Several bus services are operated

among cities in Indonesia. There are

several major terminals in Jakarta such

as Kampung Rambutan Terminal in East

Jakarta, Pulogadung Terminal in East

Jakarta, and Lebak Bulus Terminal in

South Jakarta. This might not be the

most convenient way as it would take

days to reach Jakarta, depending on the

traffic and your location of departure. But, if you come from Bandung, Bogor, or any

location near Jakarta, getting to Jakarta by road will be a good choice.
