PRINCIPAL’S WINDOW PARENTING SUPPORT
Welcome to today’s new look newsletter. This week sees the intro-
duction of ‘Parenting Ideas Insights’ (located at the back of the newsletter) from Mi-
chael Grose (Masters of Educational Studies & author of nine parenting books). I
hope these weekly articles support students, staff and parents to work together to
bring about positive change in our school community. Our first ‘Parenting Support’
article is called ‘Mind Their Language’. This article is very timely as it reinforces our
efforts at school to encourage children to communicate appropriately. Michael offers
some clear advice and helpful tips. If you would like to discuss any parts of this article
please come and see me. Alternatively if this article sparks significant interest and/or
concern I am happy to lead a ‘Parent Forum’ on this topic in Term 4.

In Reading this week we are learning about using visualising to improve our understanding of what we are
reading. This involves using our prior knowledge to make pictures in our mind. In Maths we are finishing up
our work on counting strategies and looking at place value. In Writing we are learning about writing re-
counts. These text types are used to retell an event that has happened.
1/2’s—Swimming is going very well and students are excited to share the new and improved skills they are
learning. Don’t forget the prep, one , two activity is at the end of November and the year 2 sleepover will
be a Wednesday night! In Reading we are learning the comprehension strategy of “visualising”. We
have been listening to stories, poems and music to make pictures so that we can remember the story. In
Writing we are writing recounts which involve past tense words and time/sequence words, e.g. first, after
that, then, lastly. In Maths we are learning how to make, draw, record and talk about place value. The
position of a number makes a difference to the number size, e.g. the numbers 86 and 28 both have an 8
in them but one is 8 tens or 80 and the other is 8 ones. Lots of games and making with unifix consolidate
this learning. In Spelling we are continuing with our phonics learning. This week is the long “u” sounds, e.g.
uniform, unicorn, unifix.
3/4’s—are currently in the Grampians, enjoying their camp. We look forward to hearing their stories.
All 5/6 students are enjoying reflecting on our recent Sovereign Hill Camp. We are presently completing
summaries of each of our experiences and preparing to publish them with supporting photographs and
illustrations to display. Please take note of the fact that all 5/6 students swim on Wednesdays and cooking
times have changed to even weeks; Tuesday-5/6T Wednesday 5/6D and Thursday 5/6M.
Orders can be placed at the office up until 9am on the day at a cost of
$5 per child, which includes a piece of fruit at snack time and a
delicious home made meal, with a treat at lunchtime.
Next week’s Café menu is

Wednesday — Sausage Rolls
Thursday — Mexican Bean & Corn Burritos

Numeracy Tip:
Here’s a numeracy tip on providing experiences dealing with money.
Playing Shop
Collect food and grocery items and label them with prices written on sticky notes or prices cut
out of shopping catalogues.
Talk about how we pay for items using notes and coins
Make paper money or use play money to buy and sell goods from the shop
Order the food items by height (tallest to the shortest) or by cost (least expensive to most ex-
pensive).
Introduce kitchen scales to the shop to weigh some foods such as a box of tea bags or a bag
of rice and order items by weight.

O.S.H.C. News
The children are playing Cat and Mouse with the use of the parachute.
This activity encourages the children to observe the parachute for the body shape of the per-
son who is the mouse underneath. The cat (person) on top of parachute has to tag the mouse.
The children have to work together as a team to move the parachute up and down to disguise
the mouse.

PORT FAIRY SPRING MUSIC FESTIVAL & PIED PIPER : Leading Onto Better Things
What a wonderful performance last Friday evening for the opening of the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival opening! The
stadium was transformed into a theatre for the premiere of a new work “Palapitj-ngu, Kaloyn-I”; an interpretation of the
Six Seasons of the Warrnambool area. It was written by a young Gunditjmara man Corey Theatre and featured the voic-
es of Archie Roach and a combined school children’s choir from Consolidated and St Pats. The biggest challenge for the
children was the learning of aboriginal words and singing then them in the beautiful melodies written for them. Parents
who were able to attend said they had no idea that the music would be so moving and it was amazing to have their chil-
dren involved.
On Sunday afternoon, those of you who were able to see the Victorian Opera production of the Pied Piper of Hamelin
were also entertained by a very fine performance. Many people have stopped us in the street or contacted the school to
say how much they enjoyed it and how impressed they were with the obvious commitment and involvement of the chil-
dren from both the schools. Victorian Opera Artistic Director and composer of the “Pied Piper” Richard Mills was also
very impressed, finding our performance of the show very moving with the obvious connection of the both children’s
and adult choruses to the community. It was especially moving for everyone taking part to present it in their own com-
munity to family and friends.
The choirs have been working on this project for the past 3 months and a big thank you to Mrs Antonia Balmer from St
Pats and all the parents who encouraged and supported their children. There was a lot of support provided by Victorian
Opera with materials and workshops to make this production a great success. It is only the first of their regional Victori-
an tour with other regional centres also taking part; Warragul, Wodonga, Mildura, Shepparton and Bendigo. It was a
fantastic opportunity for children to see what Victorian Opera do and give them a taste of professional staging of an
opera. Now that Victorian Opera have seen what we can do here in Port Fairy, they are very keen to continue a relation-
ship with us through the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival to foster more music-making and community involvement.
