AIM Bovine Statistics Report 2011

The AIM Bovine Statistics Report 2011 provides comprehensive data on calf births, farm-to-farm and mart movements as well as details of cattle slaughtered in factories and abattoirs, live exports and on-farm bovine deaths. The Report is compiled on an annual basis from data provided by farmers, livestock marts, factories, abattoirs and export locations to the Animal Identification and Movement (AIM) database managed by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. The Report contains a comprehensive list of livestock marts, abattoirs, factories, export points for live cattle and knackeries. The AIM Bovine Statistics Report contains valuable statistical information for use by interested stakeholders to monitor trends in the beef and dairy sectors. Data and reports generated from the AIM system are provided by the Department to a range of organisations including Bord Bia, Central Statistics Office (CSO), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF), Teagasc as well as breed societies, farming organisations and Meat Industry Ireland (MII). The Report is available in the 2012 Publications section of the Department’s website www.agriculture.gov.ie. Updated reports are provided on the website each month on calf registrations, factory slaughterings, live exports and an age profile of the national herd. Animal Identification and Movement (AIM) System The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine maintains cattle traceability records on a central database known as the Animal Identification and Movement System (AIM). The AIM system records all birth, movements and disposals in accordance with EU requirements and therefore traces all bovines from birth to slaughter. The traceability system provides assurances to customers and consumers at home and abroad about the origin and traceability of beef, protects animal and human health and secures and maintains markets for Irish cattle and beef. Uses of AIM

Verify the origin, identity and life history of cattle entering the food chain.

Pre-clear live exports.

Assists in the testing and certification requirements for specific export markets.

Management tool for disease control purposes in compliance with EU and national requirements and to facilitate identification and segregation of bovines for disease testing, tracing of cohorts and progeny.

Plays a key role in facilitating compliance with EU and national requirements and in the management of a range of programmes other than those relating to animal health and food safety including:

- Single Payment Scheme; - Compensatory Allowances Scheme; - Rural Environment Protection Scheme (REPS); - Animal Welfare Recording and Breeding Scheme for Suckler Herds; and - Nitrates Regulations.
