THIS LITTLE PIGGY

As a pastor I often find myself asking Almighty God to heal my people. When one of you mentions to me, before or after mass, to “pray for me father. . . I have . . .” I do. Regularly a number of those requests are prayerful requests for healing. Often this is in my mind while I am distributing holy communion. While I am saying, “the body of Christ” I am simultaneously praying, “Jesus please heal so-and-so”. This week we have a chance to honor and ask the help of one of our greatest saint-friends in heaven: St. Blaise.

According to legend, St. Blaise was a medical doctor before he became a bishop. While Catholics were still being hunted down and killed, in the early fourth century, Blaise was found to be a Christian and taken prisoner by the authority of the roman governor Agricolaus.

The Governor had sent out hunters to comb the wilderness near Armenia to find this bishop named Blaise who was spreading the Catholic faith and the good news of Jesus, and the hunters found him in a cave and threw him into prison. What led the hunters to investigate the cave, according to legend, were the large numbers of animal prints – of various kinds – leading to and from this cave. St. Blaise had been healing many wild animals -for he was a kind of early St. Francis. So much did he love God’s gift of life –present in every living being- that animals apparently sought Blaise out for healing.

Before he was imprisoned, there is a story that Blaise was met by a woman parishioner in tears because her pig had been snatched by a wolf. Blaise followed the trail, found both animals, and ordered the wolf to release the pig. It was freed unhurt.

What is known is that while in prison Blaise miraculously healed a small boy choking to death on a fishbone lodged in his throat. The woman whose pig had been saved, brought Blaise two candles and a copy of the scriptures so Blaise could read the bible while in prison. A few months later Blaise himself was executed for his Catholic faith in Jesus. But that was not the end of his story.

Many sick Christians began to spread the word about Blaise’s courage in the face of torture and miracles during his life – and began to ask his spiritual help – to intercede on their behalf – for healing and health. He became one of the most popular saints and his relics are preserved today in Germany.

What Blaise can teach us – other than the important lesson of holding onto our faith and bravely sharing the gospel- is that faith and actions go together. Blaise was a medical doctor. No he didn’t have EKG machines, XRays, or stethoscopes, but he used the best knowledge of his training of his time to help heal people and animals. He also, used his faith in Christ. God works naturally through doctors, through nurses, through veterinarians, as well as supernaturally through saints, miracles, and you and me. We’ll be having throat blessings and special masses on Wednesday Feb 3rd at 8am, 12 noon, and 6pm to ask Blaise’s help. I hope that’s not too much to swallow.

Surprise! This is Fr. Dave filling in for Lou’s col-umn this week. The Church’s vision of us at mass is that all of us will have Full, Conscious, and Ac-tive Participation. Each of those words has a very specific meaning. Here is how we think about them:

“Full” - That we enter into worship as a whole person, our minds, our hearts, our bodies, who we are, our very being is called to worship God.

“Conscious” - As we worship God, we are aware of who we are: God’s People in this part of Jersey; what we are: Christians. Followers of His Son, Jesus Christ; and what we are called to be: Modern day missionaries -To go out to the world and tell the Good News.

“Active” - Our response to the love, mercy, and grace of God in our lives calls for a re-sponse that is both internal and external. We stand, we sit, we listen, we kneel, we sing, we open our hearts and our minds, as we enter into a divine dialogue that brings us into the pres-ence and mystery of God.

“Participation” - As baptized members of the Body of Christ, we are called to participate in the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ…this is the core of our worship. Our expe-riences at Mass of offering, the great sacrifice to God of Jesus Christ, His Son, along with our-selves, is central sacred action of the Eucharistic Prayer. The culmination of the sacrifice takes place when we receive the Body and Blood of Jesus at His banquet table here on earth, the al-tar. This food gives us the courage and nourish-ment to be disciples of Jesus Christ in our parish family, our own families, our workplaces and the world over.

Lewis Congratulations to our second graders who make their first Reconciliation this weekend. Let us all follow their example and take advantage of this great sacrament of God’s mercy! Faith at Home: Sometimes we tend to not give much attention to those who are closest to us, the members of our own family. What are the good qualities of the people with whom we live? Let each member of the family write down (or say) at least one good quality that they see in each member of their family. Say a prayer of thanks to God for the good that we see in others. Second Annual “Soup-er Bowl” Drive: Bring in a can of soup for those who need a warm meal. Our soup drive will run through February 7. Vacation Bible School: Children ages 4 through 11, plan to join us June 27-30 and July 5-8 for our 8-day VBS: “Dive into God’s Word.” Each day will begin at 9:30am and end at 12:30pm. Learn about God’s Word through Scripture, songs, crafts, games, and even snacks! Registration be-gins in February. Traveling Mary: After Mary spent time at Alex’s house, he prayed: “Hi Mary. I love you. I pray every day. Peace be with you.”

I am writing this in advance of the big snow-storm we had last weekend. Our bus trip to the March for Life in Washington DC was cancelled. Sweet Treat Sunday was also cancelled for now and I have rescheduled it for March 6.

Some of our youth will be helping with the Saint Vincent de Paul Souper Sunday Family Day that you can read about elsewhere in this bulle-tin.

Hopefully, we will not have a snowstorm on Saturday, February 20, as we are scheduled to have our 3rd annual Spaghetti-Ingo Family Fun night after the 5:00pm Mass. The evening will begin with a spaghetti dinner cooked by some of our youth group moms and served by our youth. Following dinner will be several rounds of bingo with various prizes. The calling will be led by one of our seniors. It is always a wonderful night of fun and community building, enjoyed by parishioners of all ages. I will have tickets for sale in the office beginning this week. Tickets will be $10 for adults, $5 for kids under 13, with a $30 family maximum.

To our 7th and 8th graders: A reminder that there will be no class this Wednesday, February 3 because of the Feast of St. Blaise. All students and families are strongly encouraged to attend the 6:00pm Mass for the Blessing of Throats.

An Update

St. Martha’s parish, like every other parish in

the Diocese of Trenton, is participating in ‘Faith in Our Future’ initiative. For this planning process to be successful, every parish should have con-versations/discussions within its membership, and come up with preliminary recommenda-tions. These recommendations will be discussed with a group (3 to 5) of neighboring parishes (known as Cohort parishes), and the final rec-ommendations will be forwarded to the Dioce-san planning Commission.

Our Pastor, Fr. Dave, has formed a St. Mar-tha’s parish Core Team to lead the parish through the planning process. The parish Core Team consists of: Fr. Dave, and four members of the parish, namely: Arthur (Art) Olson, Kathleen Savage, and George & Grace Kuttiparichel.

The parish Core Team, while leading the par-ish through the planning process, is responsible for engaging members of the parish in an eval-uation of the parish according to the criteria es-tablished by the Diocese. For this purpose, an on-line survey questionnaire is already available at St. Martha’s parish website: www.saintmar-tha.net. In addition, the Team is accountable for the parish summary report and verification of data. The Team will also participate in cohort planning and recommend parish model/mod-els for the most effective way the cohort par-ishes can work together in the future etc.
