Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign

2

Student’s Voice (Batch 26)

Salma Umer Sabah ShehadAs a student of Dubai Pharmacy College, I got

an opportunity to attend a conference about

breast cancer awareness organised by

renowned hospital of the region and got to

know and understand the symptoms,

treatments, prevention along with

precautionary check-up of breast cancer. It

was very enlightening as many Doctors and

Radiologists delivered informative speeches,

advising that women over the age of 42 years

or any younger having a history of cancer in

their family must have mammograms.

Furthermore, women with any sort of a lump

must visit a doctor for check-up.

The most inspiring part was listening the

motivational stories of breast cancer

survivors, and learning how they lived through

the hard period of breast cancer. These

survivors also shared their delightful

experiences with Zulekha hospital and its

aiding professional staff in their fight against

cancer.

Suggested tips to avoid the risk of breast

cancer:

• Annual check-up (MAMMOGRAM)

• Self-examine

• Breastfeed

• Avoid smoking

• Regular exercise maintaining healthy diet

Cancer can be an isolating experience but we

experienced the opposite when we heard

inspirational speeches from strong survivors of

Breast cancer. We heard what the doctors had

to say about cancer which added a lot to our

medical knowledge.

Zulekha hospitals have been setting up

campaigns to diagnose breast cancer from early

stage by giving free mammograms. We also got

to know that women over the age of 45 or

younger with a family history of breast cancer

have 50% chances of getting cancer so they are

recommended to go for annual mammography.

We were taught how to observe a lump in the

breast. We had a chance to see Dr. Zulekha Daud

herself, one of the strongest and down to earth

women ever seen. Watching her was also an

experience of once in a blue moon.

A great awakening session indeed.

On the 10th of October, Dubai Pharmacy Collegewas exceptionally fortunate to have Aya Jamal, the chairperson of the IPSF EasternMediterranean Regional Office, who gave amotivational speech. She lively spoke about herjourney from being a typical pharmacy student, tobecoming the chairperson of one of the majorIPSF Regional Offices.

“MOTIVATIONAL SPEECH by AYA JAMAL – Chairperson IPSF - EMRO ”

- Written by Mariam Othman (Batch 26); Edited by: Mariam Qudsi (Batch 23)

In addition, she stated that, according to her ownexperience, if a certain member of the IPSF teamwas not familiar with some of the most basictopics related to their positions or tasks, there isalways a way to advance and work their way up tothe highest of positions. She surgedencouragement to her audience by explaininghow she was able to become independent enoughto travel abroad and attend professionalconferences, and how she truly earned herfamilies trust to be able to do so.

Her lively, motivational, and direct appeal, along with the ongoing and enthusiastic

interaction of her audience, were the catalyst to this effective, yet time-limited gathering. Having her as our renowned guest was undoubtedly a true honor.DPCSU – IPSF members with

It has been a marvelousexperience being able toattend the Gitex TechnologyWeek Exhibition. Westudents of Dubai PharmacyCollege, as few girls fromeach year, were taken by thecollege’s bus to Dubai’sWorld Trade Centre wherethe exhibition was held.

We got to witness some ofthe best technologicalmachinery and equipmentthat might just be the nextbig bang in the world ofhealth care. Firstly, we had alook Omnicell’s finemedication dispenser, displayed and operated atDubai Health Authority stallin the exhibition hall. It wasdesigned to be able to fetch12 recipes a minute once aspecific code for eachmedication is input throughthe keyboard or touchscreen, operating with

absolutely no medicationerrors. We saw the machineoperating live, and it wasmoving swiftly whilesmoothly taking eachmedication off the shelfwithout interfering with therest.

Additionally, next to thedispenser was a colorfullayout of how a smart, successful pharmacy canoperate. Next to that as wellwas Omnicell’s electronicmedical record input screen,an input method designed toreduce medical record errors, providing a safer hospitalenvironment for inpatients aswell as outpatients.

As we walked around thestalls of different equipmentand machinery from all overthe globe, a Korean stall with“health care” written aboveit caught my eye. The

technology displayed on thatstall especially was the mostinteresting part of the wholetrip, in my opinion. I got tosee Healthall’s smart pill box“cabinet” which was a smallbox that stores pills in a saferway, isolating them from anyexternal factors that couldmake them go bad. Ipersonally thought that thiswould definitely be a greataddition to a smartpharmacy.

Nevertheless, the KoreanO’View’s smart ovulationtest, a tiny metal piece thatwas made to detectpregnancy just by testingsaliva, was displayed there. Itcame in a bunch of differentcolors that I initially thoughtit was a phone accessory ofsome kind. Finally, in the same Koreanstall was Solmitech’s pen-shaped magnifier that can beconnected to literally anysmart device through a port, and can show themagnification of whateverthe magnifier was placed on.Such a device mighteventually replacemicroscopes of school andcollege laboratories, whichcan get rid of the hassle ofhaving to purchase and carryand store heavy microscopes.

Moreover, Solmitech had aspecial card with a site forplacing the index and middlefingers of both hands, then

an external port to connectthe card to a smart device. This card resembled acomputerized hospitalsystem, measuring heartrate, blood pressure andblood sugar levels whilesimultaneously displayingmind relaxing games andtones to reduce stress levelsand high blood pressure. Itcould also orchestrate notesbased on a patient’s patternof heartbeat, which I thoughtwas very artistic andbeautiful. It is what you cancall “health andentertainment in onedevice”. There was also analternative wireless versionthat could be placed directlyon the chest.

All in all, I greatly enjoyed mytime and took a look at howhealthcare has such a fast-growing technology, and gotthe inspiration and feeling ofindependence while being insuch a professional settingfor a few hours of my day.

I would undoubtedly sign upfor more trips of that kind atDubai Pharmacy College, andencourage all to do thesame.

We had the pleasure as DubaiPharmacy College studentsto visit GITEX Technologyweek Exhibition at WorldTrade Centre which is a mustattend event as it presentsthe world’s fastest growingtechnology and innovations.

People at GITEX are willing totry new things and come upwith new innovations that'swhy we were honored to visitthe DHA (Dubai healthauthority) stand at GITEXbecause it's shows the mostinfluential and excitingtechnology, attracting adiverse audience of ITprofessionals, technologyenthusiasts, students, regional consumers andtraders.

The first thing that caughtour eyes was "the smartpharmacy program" whichwas in the form of a bigtablet that anyone can accessby just pressing on the screenmaking it easier and moreconvenient to deal with. Thisprogram had subheadingslike "outpatient", "patientjourney", "smartapplications", and so muchmore which helps the

patients to access all theinformation they needwhether it's related to achronic diseases likehypertension or whether it'srelated to certain symptomsor treatment.

Dubai Health Authority (DHA)has inaugurated its first"robot" pharmacy for thefirst time in the UAE todispense prescribedmedication, news agencyWAM reported. The robotcan dispense prescribedmedication at the click of abutton based on a barcode, thus minimizing any humanerror, it added. The DHA saidit will soon adopt the use ofrobot in all its hospitalpharmacies. The robot, whichcan store up to 35,000medicines and dispensearound 12 prescriptions inless than a minute. The robotwill significantly reduce aperson’s waiting time, Dr AliAl Syed said, adding that thedispensing process will bepaperless.

The other machine we gotintroduced to was themechanical machine by

Omnicell which had theconcept of a vendingmachine where patients caninsert a certain amount ofmoney for the desirableproduct and the product willbe available immediately. This invention will quite helpthe patients to avoidcrowded pharmacies and quitany queues.

The last thing we were veryimpressed was a new way todetect if a woman ispregnant or not by testingher saliva. When a woman isabout to ovulate, her salivabegins to form a distinct fern-like pattern due to anincrease in the level of saltand estrogen. With the salivabased ovulation fertility tests, just add a drop of saliva tothe lens and let the sampledry and then the sample isready to be examined.

Dubai Health Authority standat GITEX is a site of attractionwhere every medical studentwould explore a world ofnew technology in themedical and health field togain more knowledge andhelp spread awareness andnew medical trends that willhelp patients in everypossible way.

“12th Annual Pharma Middle East Congress”25-26 September. 201, Dubai UAE

1st Lecture : Nanotechnology and its Applications

Abstract:Nanotechnology is being used in the pharmaceutical field for different reasons. The main reason is

to improve drug solubility and delivery to various sites for action. Nanotechnology is also used to

develop new and improved therapeutic devices. Therapeutics are improved through both the

consistent drug delivery, drug targeting and bioavailability of existing medicinal moieties,

including the discovery of completely new substances and nanomaterials, which brings out

different added advantages over classical drug delivery systems, including the targeted delivery to

effected sites only, and the improved adsorption, distribution and duration of medication in the

body. The lecture highlighted the following topics:

• 1-Nanomedicine

• 2-Nano particles in drug delivery

• 3-Pharmaceutical nanotechnology

• 4-Nanotechnology drug delivery systems

• 5-Nanotechnology and therapeutic delivery.

• 6-Applications of nanotechnology.

2nd Lecture : The health risks secrets of chemicals exposure in cosmetics

and personal care products-misleading claims and regulatory bodies

Abstract:Cosmetics and personal care products are a diversity set of items commonly use in beauty health

and hygiene.Despite the compelling evidence for health impacts in humans and environment of

toxicity long term exposure to chemicals in these products, but still remain the excessive items

consumption in the world. A growing body of hazard-based evidence suggests connections to

long-term health concerns like cancer and reproductive problem. Advertising in the fashion and

beauty and the industry misleading claims has effect on women and regulatory authority.

It’s been just over a year since I joinedthe IPSF organization. I was acoordinator in Professional Developmentand Media Publication committee. It hasbeen an incredible year for me. I wasafraid to put myself in that position andcarry responsibilities.

Some people are shy and have a hardtime meeting new people and I am oneof this kind. Though my portfolioincluded meeting people and impartingknowledge, I faced some barriers andavoided interaction. But I took a strongdecision to overcome my weakness andbreak all barriers.

Involving in events and awarenesscampaigns gave me the opportunity to. Ilearnt invaluable lessons about myself -lessons that are still redefining mythoughts, beliefs, and actions. practiceand develop my social behavior such asteamwork.

Exploring interests and passionsrenewed my zeal of creativity, motivation, self confidence, and visionthat extends over into my personal andprofessional life.

Since we regularly meet with a group ofpeople with common interests it is easier

to branch out and make more friends andcontacts.

An important lesson I learnt is, I becamepassionate about spreading the word onresponsible volunteerism As my lifechanged significantly after I joined IPSF.

I want to thank Prof . Saeed AhmedKhan for the opportunity to be a part ofIPSF.

Many thanks to Ms. Rafa Al Khalifawhose pioneering work made DPC thefirst college in the UAE to join aprofessional international studentfederation body.
