2 NOVEMBER 2016
Dear Member,
This month, WTTW remembers the sacrifices of America’s veterans with a variety of relevant content, including the local documentary Heroes on Deck about a secret training mission on Lake Michigan, two specials on the Pearl Harbor attack by the Japanese, the Vietnam War, the valuable contributions of the USO to troop morale, military medical advances, American Indian veterans, and more. On WFMT, Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune returns for the popular on-air and online series The Film Score
with a special focusing on war movies.
On WTTW11 and wttw.com, the PBS NewsHour team will provide the most in-depth Election Night coverage you’ll find, and Chicago Tonight will focus on the local races with broadcast and digital content. Entries in the PBS Fall Arts Festival include specials with the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre, actor/author Alan Cumming, renowned classical pianist Lang Lang, and the critically acclaimed production of Gypsy from London, starring Imelda Staunton. We explore the Secret Life of Babies and hear The Story of Cats on Nature; the eight-part series Soundbreaking provides a unique look at the art of music recording; Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. traces the last half-century of Black America since MLK; and we spend An Evening with Valerie Jarrett. A highly-anticipated new series for kids
from the Jim Henson Company, Splash and Bubbles, makes its debut, as does a new adaptation of Anne of Green Gables, with Martin Sheen in the supporting cast. New episodes of Check, Please! continue on Friday nights on our broadcast and on wttw.com/checkplease. And to round out the month, travel expert Rick Steves pays WTTW an in-studio visit. Remember that you can access our content on TV, online and via our video app, wherever and whenever is convenient for you.
This month, 98.7WFMT and wfmt.com bring you a new production of The Trojans by Hector Berlioz, one of the grandest of grand operas ever written. Lyric Opera of Chicago stages its first Trojans this month, with Christine Goerke, Brandon Jovanovich, and Sophie Koch leading the cast and Sir Andrew Davis conducting. WFMT’s Lisa Flynn and Lyric’s Roger Pines co-host the broadcast. And Live from WFMT, hosted on Monday evenings by Kerry Frumkin, is underway for another season. During November we’ll welcome violinist Benny Kim, cellist Steven Honigberg, pianist Susan Merdinger, and the Dover String Quartet. Catch up on the latest music and fine arts news stories on wfmt.com, where you can also access live streaming, podcasts, playlists, new releases, quizzes, and more.
In this month of Thanksgiving, we express our appreciation to you, the members of WTTW and WFMT, who continue to make all of this possible. In fact, for those of you who supported us this year by entering our 2016 Great Treasure Hunt Sweepstakes, we’re giving away a free Subaru and hundreds of other prizes! There’s still time to enter and tune in on November 21 at 8:50 pm to watch our live drawing.
Sincerely,
Dan SchmidtPresident & CEO

On the evening of Wednesday, September 21, WTTW held a rousing Trivia Night at The Globe Pub in Chicago. WTTW fans and friends gathered for a fun-filled evening that put their love of WTTW, pop culture, and trivia to the test. Chicago history and the stars of Masterpiece? Doctor Who and the writer of that old song from Sesame Street? These were some of the question topics of the night!
Chicago’s favorite Quizmaster Dave, had teams battling it out while enjoying great food, drink specials, and prizes all night. The evening’s proceeds helped support the exceptional programming on WTTW. Stay tuned for future events like this one!

Filthy Cities(3-Part Series)Do you have to dodge the contents of bedpans or step over rotting corpses on your way to work? Well, you may have had to if you’d lived in London, New York, or Paris when they were filthy cities. Dan Snow’s series brings to life the murky histories of these great cities, taking the travelogue in a new direction as he excavates their dirty pasts in gruesome detail during defining periods in history. What he reveals is that the story of our epic battle against filth through the ages is also the story of the birth of the modern metropolis.

Rossini’s Larcenous MagpieAlmost never performed in modern times, La Gazza Ladra (The Thieving Magpie), Gioacchino Rossini’s 1817 opera for La Scala in Milan, is best remembered for its brilliant overture that opens with a snare-drum solo. This sets the opera’s military background. Two soldiers are returning from war to their home village: one eager to marry his sweetheart, and the other that sweetheart’s father, charged with desertion, running from the authorities. The young woman, Ninetta, in her attempts to help and hide her father, is accused of theft from her employers, a capital crime. The large cast includes a sympathetic jailer and also a lecherous politician, the village mayor. And yes, there is a magpie, portrayed by Meg Gillentine in Glimmerglass Opera’s recent production.

Vasily Petrenko: CSO Guest ConductorVasily Petrenko studied at Russia’s St. Petersburg Conservatory and was tutored in the art of conducting by Mariss Jansons and Esa-Pekka Salonen. After making a 2004 debut with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, he was named that British orchestra’s principal conductor. His ongoing relationship with the RLPO has included recordings on the Naxos label and appearances at the BBC Promenade Concerts. His relationship with Norway’s Oslo Philharmonic began in 2009, and he is now that ensemble’s chief conductor. When he came to the Chicago Symphony as a guest conductor, joined by guest pianist Paul Lewis, the program contained Beethoven’s Emperor concerto, the overture In the South by Elgar, and a favorite piece by Rachmaninoff, his Symphonic Dances.

2016 NOVEMBER 23
Lyric Opera’s First Production of The TrojansGiven its length, its large cast, the demanding music, and the need for sets and staging to re-create two major cities of the ancient world, a production of Les Troyens (The Trojans) by Hector Berlioz is a major undertaking for any opera company. Lyric Opera of Chicago presents a new production of The Trojans this fall; Sir Andrew Davis will conduct, and the pivotal role of Aeneas will be taken by Brandon Jovanovich. Based on Virgil’s Aeneid, the story begins in Troy, and in the first part of the opera the focus is on Cassandra, to be played by soprano Christine Goerke. Cassandra is the Trojan princess given the gift of prophecy by an amorous god; when she rejected his love, he cursed his gift by making sure no one would ever believe anything she said. Thus Cassandra predicts doom for her city and its people and is ignored. Aeneas, his followers, and most of his family escape the fall of Troy, to sail the Mediterranean westward to the city of Carthage, and now the focus moves to soprano Sophie Koch, who’ll sing the role of Queen Dido. Aeneas and the queen fall in love, but his destiny forces him to move onward to Italy, where he’s to become the (mythical) founder of the Roman Empire. In addition to the featured soloists, in The Trojans the chorus to play a major role (Lyric Opera Chorus: Michael Black, chorus master). Lisa Flynn and Roger Pines will co-host WFMT’s broadcast.

Music by John Luther AdamsJohn Luther Adams’ Become Ocean won both a Pulitzer (2014) and a Grammy (2015). An earlier piece, The Light That Fills the World, was first conceived for chamber ensemble; the composer orchestrated it in 2000. Like a number of his works, it conveys a strong sense of place, since he takes major inspiration from the landscapes, seascapes, and native traditions of Alaska, where he lives. Musically, he’s been influenced by such composers as Steve Reich and Philip Glass. The title of The Light That Fills the World comes from an Inuit poem and is meant to convey the joy of the return of springtime sunlight after the long, dark Arctic winter.

Exploring Music Explores EnescoIn France, where he spent a large part of his life, the name is Georges Enesco; in his native Romania, whose culture and traditions he transmuted into music, the name is George Enescu. The Romanian village where he was born in 1881 is now named for him. As a seven-year-old, he became the youngest student ever admitted to the Vienna Conservatory, so perhaps “child prodigy” is too mild a term. He began his career as a violinist, soon encompassing composition and conducting as well. Among his students was the great violinist Yehudi Menuhin, who said of him, simply and unequivocally, that he was an extraordinary human being. Bill McGlaughlin will trace Enesco’s multi-faceted and fascinating career during an upcoming week of Exploring Music.

Lyric Opera and Don QuixoteAs Lyric’s website puts it, “More than half a century before Man of La Mancha, [Jules] Massenet brought Cervantes’ universally-beloved dreamer Don Quixote to the operatic stage.” The title role is one of the outstanding characterizations in all of French opera, and it’ll be interpreted at the Civic Opera House by bass Ferruccio Furlanetto. Nicola Alaimo portrays the Don’s squire, Sancho Panza, and Clementine Margaine sings the role of Dulcinea. Sir Andrew Davis will conduct; WFMT’s live opening-night broadcast will be co-hosted by Lisa Flynn and Roger Pines.

2016 NOVEMBER 27
Giving Thanks to MusicMusic can mark a momentous time in a person’s life, or recall a deep-seated emotion, or even change individual lives in powerful ways. This Thanksgiving special features eight individuals from different walks of life to describe something they all have in common: the profound value they have found in music. Hosted by Carl Grapentine, this program features the thoughts and musical favorites of soprano Renée Fleming; tenor José Carreras; conductor JoAnn Falletta; US poet laureate Juan Felipe Herrera; actress Joanna Lumley; author and humanitarian activist Terry Waite; author-documentarian John Humphrys; and broadcaster Geeta Guru-Murthy. Producer: Jon Tolansky.

On Relevant Tones, A Louis Andriessen AppreciationRelevant Tones host Seth Boustead takes note during November of the tremendous influence the Dutch composer Louis Andriessen (b 1939) has had on younger composers. A prolific composer, and longtime teacher at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, this scion of an extraordinary musical family received his most recent accolade in 2011, winning the Grawemeyer Award for Musical Composition for his multimedia opera La Commedia, after Dante. Seth notes that the members of the influential New York collective Bang on A Can have been especially inspired by Andriessen, and he’ll trace their influence also on the music of our day.

Fidelio from San FranciscoIn 2015 the San Francisco Symphony and its music director, Michael Tilson Thomas, presented a concert staging of Fidelio as part of its Beethoven Festival. Among Beethoven’s many achievements this is one of the high points. His only opera, it took nearly a decade for it to reach its final form amid many revisions and disappointments. The title role of Fidelio-Leonore is portrayed by Nina Stemme, with Brandon Jovanovich as her unjustly-imprisoned husband, Florestan, and Nicholas Phan and Joelle Harvey as the work’s other pair of lovers, Jaquino and Marzelline. Also in the cast are Luca Pisaroni, Alan Held, and Kevin Langan. Highlights of the score include the famous Prisoners’ Chorus, Florestan’s mournful solo aria, and the love duet between him and Leonore at the end of Act Two. This opera performance is part of the annual American Opera series.
