Formore informationon the recommended use of pumps inmodern

air-conditioning systems, please consult the Grundfos CBS System

Guide. This also provides recommendations forthe optimumdesign

of heating, pressure boosting and wastewaterpumping systems.

All Grundfos product documentationand selectiontools, including

WinCAPS and WebCAPS are freelyavailable.WinCAPS includes details

of the viscosityand densityof virtuallyevery anti-freeze mediumused forcirculationsystems.

    Grundfos pumps ensure full control

    CR

    Primary pumps

Toensure the mostenergy-efficientoperation of the chiller,th ere is

a need fora constantflowthroughthe evaporator.Usinga speed-

controlled pump forthis purpose,in stead of a fixed-speed pump with

a throttle valve,is one way of keeping the Life Cycle Cost(LCC) of an

    air-conditioningsystem toa minimum.The speed-controlled pump is

    setata constantspeed,atthe correctduty point.

If several chillers are operatingin parallel, the use of speed-controlled

    pumps canalso ensure constantflowatall times.

    Secondary pumps

The mainpumps supply chilled water, the need forwhich varies round

the clock and throughoutthe year.Toensure low LCC,it is essential

that these pumps adjust themselves to match these fluctuations,

    thus eliminatingday-to-day and seasonal variations.

One way of doingthis is to use two-way valves instead of three-way

units and to install speed-controlled pumps. The differentneeds

associated witheach particularsystem define the optimum number

of pumps thatcanbe operated inparallel as mainpumps.

    Cooling tower

Whenthe heatproduced in the condenserexceeds whatis needed to

preheatthe hotwaterin the heatrecovery process, this excess energy

is pumped tothe coolingtower. The aim is tokeep the waterfed to

the condenserat a constanttemperature of 27C.

The performance of the coolingtower varies according to outside

conditions sopumping requirements vary accordingly. The most

energy-efficientpump fora cooling toweris therefore a speed-

    controlled unitcontrolled by temperature.

    Buffertank

One of the challenges of designingmodern air-conditioningsystems

is tocombine the constantflow onthe primary side withthe need for

variability onthe secondary side. This challenge can be overcome

witha built-in buffertank betweenthe primary and secondary sides,

makingit possible tohave a constantflowon the primary side along

witha variable flowon the secondary side. This buffertank also

controls whenthe chiller starts and stops, and the size of the tank

    determines the intervals betweenstartingand stopping.
