BROADBAND UPDATE COURT- AT- STREET Last year residents in the Court-At-Street area of the Parish and those who are on the Ashford telephone exchange learnt the news that Callflow would no longer be able to provide a higher speed broad band service. There had been issues with a mast that was no longer able to be of use to the company. We have now learnt that Call flow have been unable to resolve this problem and they have been unsuccessful in identifying a commercially viable solution for residents in this area and do not reasonably expect this to change in the near future. Openreach have recently fibre enabled the street cabinet which feeds Court at Street and this is offering significantly higher speeds as far as TN25 7EP, however, it would appear that the signal from this cabinet does not reach as far as CT21 4PQ. As such Openreach are actively looking at other optionswith the current available speeds being in the range of 1.5Mbps-5.5Mbps. Callflow regret that they have had to cease service with some customers but have received some anecdotal feedback from some of them that there was some really good mobile network speeds available using a dongle or router type device combined with a data package which made this a good alternative option for them while speeds through the normal channels (phone lines) are improved over time. One example is from the mobile company THREE who are offering 40GB per calendar month for a fee of £24.00 a month. It goes without saying that The Lympne Newsletter does not support or promote the use of any particular provider and readers are advised to carry out their own research before entering into any contract as the speeds which companies publish can be very different from the actual reality. BROADBAND UPDATE COURT- AT- STREET

Last year residents in the Court-At-Street area of the Parish and those who are on the Ashford telephone exchange learnt the news that Callflow would no longer be able to provide a higher speed broad band service. As such Openreach are ‘actively looking at

other options’ with the current available speeds being in the range of 1.5Mbps-5.5Mbps.

A reminder for all broadband users is to use the website www.fast.com to find out the speeds you are receiving where you live. Lympne Parish Council will continue to monitor the progression of the provision of Broad Band to our residents and will keep you informed.

LYMPNESTERS over 55’s

At a loose end. Don’t sit at home staring at four walls,

come and join us for a chat over tea and cake.

We meet the last Tues of each month in the village

hall committee room between 2 and 3.30 pm

EASYFUNDRAISING The Village Hall is registered with Easy Fundraising, so

we can benefit from free donations every time we shop

online. You could help us collect these free donations

from the comfort of your own home without spending

a penny extra!

What do you need to do?

First join by going to: easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/

lympnevillagehall. Then when you start shopping

online choose the retailer you want (there are nearly

3,000) and start shopping. After you have made your

purchase, the retailer will make a donation at no extra

cost whatsoever. Many people will be thinking of

booking holidays soon, which when done online

through easyfundraising could contribute donations to

the Village Hall development fund. Please give this a

try, as all it will cost you is a few extra minutes of your

time – no money is involved. The Village Hall Committee

are continuing with their fundraising events to raise

money for the development fund, but if anyone in the

village has any good ideas they would like to share

with us we’d love to hear from you.

You can either contact Denise by email:

LYMPNE FELLOWSHIP. The first meeting of

the new year was extremely well attended. Charlotte McCaulay, who is the wife of our local Rector, came along and gave us an insight into her life. Her career started in the TSB bank, she then became was a rising star in a local water authority. This all changed when her husband became an army padre. This saw them move to Norfolk,Germany,Scotland,Chatham, Maidstone and Canterbury, often living in very challenging army quarters. In fact, they moved 19 times in 29 years. Charlotte now works in the Diocesan office of Canterbury Cathedral, obtaining improvement grants for needy parishes. A most interesting talk by a very busy lady. Next month's meeting will be a talk on holistic therapies on the 8th February.

LITTER WATCH

Over the passed few years there has been a dedicated team who go round the village litter picking, ably led by Derek Cowell. the great improvement is for all to see. It would be wonderful if this diligence could be a thing of the past, all that is needed is for each of us to be aware of our habits. The vast majority of us do not drop litter so perhaps if any of us in an unguarded moment let something fall pick it up and take it home or find one of the litter bins dotted around the village. At the moment we are in the process of trying to include children as they can be very influential with their friends and family.

So let us all aim for LITTER FREE LYMPNE

STUDYING HISTORY AND ARCHAEOLOGY IN LYMPNE (SHAL) In January we were delighted to welcome Krystina Boulden with a highly interesting talk entitled “The Living Landscape”. The Boulden family have farmed in the locality for generations and now use their own wool to produce a wide variety of products. Romney sheep are famous worldwide; they are very hardy, excellent mothers and have a semi-lustrous fleece. After 5 months pregnancy, lambing occurs in March and April. Ewes and their lambs are marked to recognise who belongs to who and to spot if one goes missing. Paul still uses his grandfather’s traditional shepherd’s crook, which is also part of their business logo. Shearing begins in June to avoid harmful fly strike. The Boulden’s flock of British Merinos are also one of the most famous breeds due to their fine stable wools giving an extremely soft yarn. Lambing takes place in a shed in February - they are not as hardy as the Romney sheep, nor such good mothers. The Romney breed dates back to the 13th century. 100 years ago, wool was a main income, and smuggling of sheep was rife. Over the years breeding became more about the meat. In the1950s-1960s man-made fibres became widely available; 15 years ago farmers were paying more to shear their sheep than they were gaining in income. There were about 50,000 sheep on the Marsh 50 years ago, now about 20,000. 85% of all British wool goes into carpet manufacture. Fleeces are sent to be washed to extract the oils and lanolin, graded and combed to remove debris, sorted and spun. The whole process takes 5 months resulting in a very high quality product. So, what makes wool so special? It is natural, renewable, fire retardant, biodegradable (an excellent slug repellent), breathable, a natural insulator and elastic. Lanolin has waterproofing qualities and is also beneficial to us, helping keep skin soft and hydrated. For more information about their products visit romneymarshwools.co.uk or telephone 01233 721800 Our next meeting is on Tuesday 13 February 2018, 7.30 pm, St Stephen’s Church, when we look forward to welcoming Dr Christopher Cole, a local Archaeologist and Historian who will be telling us about ‘The Black

Death’ and the impact it had on this area. New members and visitors are always welcome.

For further information please contact Fiona Jarvest on 01303 237143 or email [email protected].

Grass is Grass... But there is a lot more than that to it, as it is a very im-portant crop for us. Permanent pasture will last for years, and has a seed head every year. Most seeds will die but there is a constant reseeding. Perennial rye grass for a long term ley will have at least 4 different varieties planted with dif-

ferent heading dates. There can be as much as four weeks difference. In the mix there could be Cocks-foot, Timothy, Meadow Fescue as well as white or red Clover. For a one or two year ley, we use Italian Ryegrass, which has a very high yield but only last 18 months. Also a vast selection of Hybrid Ryegrass's which have a medium life but are high yielding. For early silage cuts with high protein, one would chose varieties with a early heading date. Once the seed head has formed the metabolizable energy falls, as the stem has a lower feed value than the leaves. When we include Clover in the mix, as it is a legume it supplies nitrogen to the soil, rather like Lucerne. The cold spell in January with rain is not to kind to the animals. Ewes have a good woollen fleece and the cattle's coat thickens. If it is freezing more of the milking cows food goes to keeping them warm and slightly lowers milk production. The beef animals weight gain also slows. Cattle and sheep are both ruminants, which means they have a rumen which contains fermented grass. Fermentation causes heat keeping them warm. Calves rumens are not developed for eight weeks which means a temperature of above 10°C is ideal. When you see them chewing their cud, you know all is OK. Old photographs, of 60 years plus ago, show people wearing hats. Cars have heaters and wind spoils one's hair style. I've not seen Boris Johnson wearing a Trilby!

And as always, Buy British!!!

Lympne Airfield History Society

Our January 2nd meeting was presented by David Goldsmith who told the Silver City Airways story from 1948 to 1954 at Lympne and their subsequent life at Ferryfield (Lydd) carrying cars across to Le Touquet until 1971. Many great images of the Bristol Freighter and Superfreighter were shown on the night to a packed East Bar. Following the success of the presentation by Henry Shackleton in November, another big audience of over forty gathered on a wet and windy night.

The March 6th presentation by John Simpson will tell the story of Amy Johnson, probably the biggest name associated with our airfield. We will look in detail of her record breaking flights to Cape Town, Darwin, the USA, Moscow and Japan in the 1930’s, and examine her last day and sad loss in the Thames estuary in January 1941. It is a story of bravery, glory, celebrity and overwhelming sadness. Amy disappeared from our skies on a cold foggy winter afternoon, which at the time was shrouded in mystery. More modern researches have revealed what happened.

All meetings start at 7.30pm sharp.

Please feel free to enjoy our continuing celebration of our Airfield in the wonderful surroundings of

Lympne Castle’s East Bar. There is no charge. Thanks to our generous hosts Richard and Rod at the castle.

FEBRUARY- Well here I am going to step into the previous Kent Gardeners wellies, quite a

daunting and hard task to follow as he/she was so good at what he/she delivered to your door. February is a month when the weather can be inclement and doesn't invite you outside readily. Many plants are still sleeping with the exception of the spring bulbs that are already showing their spiky green leaves. Now is the time to sit in the warm with your favourite tipple, be it tea, coffee or ? and start planning your garden. We redecorate our homes, buy new furniture or just move it around for a change. Well, why not your garden? Just one part will do, perhaps add a herb patch or a rockery, a new rose or fuchsia bed, a small raised bed or pots for veg, a place to sit and dream. Who knows what you can achieve. Invite a friend to help - what fun. It stimulates the whole idea of gardening. Get planning - good luck.
