The Vision
““We are going to figure out how to have We are going to figure out how to have conversationsconversations between airborne platforms, between airborne platforms, unmanned, on the ground, in the air. We’ll unmanned, on the ground, in the air. We’ll build a constellation that marries up the build a constellation that marries up the manned and the unmanned. Create that manned and the unmanned. Create that network in the sky that will pass the network in the sky that will pass the information around.”information around.”

The Airborne NetworkDefinition
That portion of the ConstellationNet that provides communication transport services and enterprise services to, from, or between network subscribers on platforms that are capable of flight and will provide capabilities to link airborne platforms with surface and space network entry points
Connects the airborne subscriber with core services from the Global Information Grid (GIG)
Governed by architecture, standards, and policy that will operationalize the implementation and management of the airborne domain as part of the enterprise

Way Ahead
Integration of applicable AN components necessary to deliver a warfighting capability
Define mission threads prioritized by the Joint Community
Align efforts toward mission thread priorities across the AF
Determine ANI priority for FY08 POM
Provide planning guidance to MAJCOMs, PEOs/SPOs, and other Services (e.g. AN Architecture, Roadmap)
I n t e g r i t y - S e r v i c e - E x c e l l e n c e 14
Challenges
Define protocols and procedures What is appropriate based on mission need?
Authentication Latency will impact fast moving platforms
Crypto Key Management Who – What – Where
Multi-Level Security Must operate Unclass – Secret – Top Secret – SCI – Coalition
Information Assurance/Net Ops How do we manage/protect highly mobile platforms in an ad-
hoc environment?
I n t e g r i t y - S e r v i c e - E x c e l l e n c e 15
Roadmap For Success
Common vision and goals Near term
Develop Airborne Networking Integration (ANI) Overall approach, structure, and manageable process Integrated POM -- priorities
Develop operational capabilities based on mission threads and scenarios
Validate AN technology through modeling and simulation Long Term
Integrated connectivity to the GIG Integrated TTPs for information assurance and network ops Airborne network connectivity services Net-enabled airborne applications
