Full- backs D.J. Johnson and Shayne Davern missed last year’s game against UNM with injuries, but they’re healthy now. Falcons wide receiver Jalen Robinette doesn’t get a lot of opportunities to catch the ball, but he makes the most of them. He leads the nation in yards per catch. “An NFL player,” Davie says. Air Force’s Tim McVey leads the nation in kickoff return average. The Lobos are hoping kickoff specialist Jason Sanders (28 touch- backs in 31 attempts) can keep the ball away from him. The Air Force defense has struggled to match UNM’s speed. The Lobos had runs of 57, 75, 45 and 44 yards — not to mention passes of 58 and 44 yards — in a 47-35 victory over AFA last year. As effective as the UNM ground game has been against Air Force the past four years — an average of 401 yards — it seems likely the Lobos will have to make some plays in the passing game if they hope to win. With “passing quarterback” Austin Apodaca (collarbone) not expected to play — but no guarantees here — junior QB Lamar Jordan (see passing stats below) needs to step it up. Or maybe not, if senior running back Teriyon Gipson (12.9 yards per carry) is completely healthy after missing the Boise State game with a ham- string injury. Gipson also missed UNM’s 37-28 loss at Rutgers, and the Lobos are a more explosive with him in the lineup. ROBERTO E. Cop- pola has 16 tackles, 1.5 sacks, two tackles for loss and a pass breakup through five games this season. >>> Falcons defensive lineman Cody Gessler and Lobos cornerback Isaiah “I.B.” Brown were teammates Katy (Texas) High School. >>> Steve Senn, Air Force’s director of recruiting and player personnel, is a 1985 Cibola graduate. Senn played wide receiver for the Falcons in the late 1980s. He holds the Falcons’ school record for receiving yards in a bowl game with 150 (and two touchdowns) in a 42-29 loss tp Ole Miss in the 1989 Liberty Bowl. During his career, Air Force went 2-0 against New Mexico and outscored the Lobos 136-40. >>> Not many college football pro- grams have a quarterback as their all-time leading career rusher, but Air Force is one. Dee Dowis, who died in a car crash ear- lier this year, rushed for 3,612 yards from 1986-89. >>> UNM nose tackle William Udeh will see not one, not two, but four former teammates on the opposite sideline today. Air Force players Andrew McAdams (sophomore linebacker), Bryce VonZurm- uehlen (sophomore defensive back) Park- er Wilson (sophomore running back) and Josh Self (senior tight end) all attended Coppell (Texas) High School with Udeh. >>> Last year’s 47-35 Lobos victory over Air Force was among UNM’s biggest in the series. The biggest? Arguably the 28-27 victory over the Falcons in Denver in the 1959 season finale. Don Perkins led the Lobos with 126 yards rushing as UNM overcame a 21-7 deficit. Air Force had gone undefeated the previous year, tying TCU 0-0 in the Cotton Bowl, and had beaten UNM 45-7 in 1958. >>> UNM agreed to play today’s game in Dallas partly because the Lobos have recruited heavily in Texas. Davie signed 22 Texas players in his first two recruiting classes (2012-13) but just 17 in his last three. California has become a greater priority, and the past two classes included players from Minnesota, Illinois, Wiscon- sin, Mississippi, Kansas and Washington. TODAY, 1:30 P.M., COTTON BOWL, DALLAS

Air Force has expanded its offensive package over the years under coach Troy Calhoun, but the Falcons remain a true wishbone/veer team in that the fullback is the focal point of the offense. Full-backs D.J. The Lobos are hoping kickoff specialist Jason Sanders (28 touch-backs in 31 attempts) can keep the ball away from him. The Air Force defense has struggled to match UNM’s speed. The Lobos had runs of 57, 75, 45 and 44 yards — not to mention passes of 58 and 44 yards — in a 47-35 victory over AFA last year.

SCOUTING THE LOBOS

New Mexico leads the nation in rushing offense (354 yards per game); Air Force is No. 2 in rushing defense (80 yards per game). “Something’s got to give, right?” Lobos coach Bob Davie said this week. Or maybe not, if senior running back Teriyon Gipson (12.9 yards per carry) is completely healthy after missing the Boise State game with a ham-string injury. Gipson also missed UNM’s 37-28 loss at Rutgers, and the Lobos are a more explosive with him in the lineup.

>>> Santo Coppola, an Air Force junior defensive end, is from Santa Fe and played for St. Michael’s High School. Cop-pola has 16 tackles, 1.5 sacks, two tackles for loss and a pass breakup through five games this season.

>>> Not many college football pro-grams have a quarterback as their all-time leading career rusher, but Air Force is one. Dee Dowis, who died in a car crash ear-lier this year, rushed for 3,612 yards from 1986-89.

>>> UNM nose tackle William Udeh will see not one, not two, but four former teammates on the opposite sideline today. Air Force players Andrew McAdams (sophomore linebacker), Bryce VonZurm-uehlen (sophomore defensive back) Park-er Wilson (sophomore running back) and Josh Self (senior tight end) all attended Coppell (Texas) High School with Udeh.

California has become a greater priority, and the past two classes included players from Minnesota, Illinois, Wiscon-sin, Mississippi, Kansas and Washington.
