Membership Meeting
The Air Medical Physician Association Board
of Trustees approved to place a non-voting
physician in training member on it’s board at
the Fall 2015 meeting. The rationale behind
this decision is to cultivate interest and
provide exposure to future leaders of the
Association.
Selection Process
Resident: Any interested resident or fellow
should submit their name with a brief
statement about their background and why
they would like to join the AMPA Board by
June 15, 2016. Their statement should
include how they feel they can contribute to
the mission of AMPA and should be submitted
to Pat Petersen, Executive Director of AMPA
at [email protected]. Candidates
expressing interest to join the AMPA Board
must be a member of AMPA, either
individually or through the Academic
Membership category through their residency
program.
AMPA President’s Corner
AMPA has seen an exciting start to 2016.
Many of our initiatives are finally coming
to fruition. We had an outstanding
turnout for CCTMC in Charlotte. Thanks
to the work of many individuals, there
were some excellent lectures during the
main conference and our anatomy
program and ultrasound preconferences
were very well received. We tried some
new things this year to help get the word
out. If you were on social media you likely
came across our conference hashtag
#CCTMC16, which had over 5.5 million
impressions by the conclusion of the
conference. We also had conference wrap
up sessions each day thanks to
@EMS_Nation and we even broadcasted
a few “teaser” lectures to the world via
Periscope for those who couldn’t join us
this year in hopes that they would see
what a great opportunity CCTMC is and
join us next year in San Antonio for the
full conference. As a proverbial dinosaur
I learned much about social media and
the potential it has for worldwide
collaboration. I even sent my first tweet
(follow me @87MD1)! Of course, our
official AMPA Twitter account,
@AMPAdocs, had a lot of activity as well.
I am also happy to tell you that we have
partnered with a new web developer and
are in the process of redesigning and
expanding the capabilities of our website.
You will have the ability to interact with
our website seamlessly from your mobile
device and we will improve the ability of
our members to communicate with each
other. We are also working on some
resources to help our members with their
day-to-day tasks as medical directors and
flight physicians.
Looking ahead to AMTC, we will be back in
Charlotte in September. We will have our
Core Curriculum Part III and a new
format for our general membership
meeting and forum that you will be
hearing more about in the coming weeks.
I am looking forward to seeing everyone
again in the fall and excited about some
of the new ways we will have to interact
with and learn from each other.

of AMPA members submitted by the
membership in writing to the AMPA office by
August 15, 2016.
The Award carries with it travel to the 2016

Medical Director of the Year
It is time for nominations for AMPA’s
Medical Director of the Year
In 2000, the Air Medical Physician
Association instituted a new annual award in
addition to the yearly Distinguished Physician
Award. In contrast to the Distinguished
Physician Award, which is intended to
recognize lifetime achievement and service to
AMPA and the air medical community, the
Medical Director of the Year is intended to
recognize that physician who has made
outstanding contributions to his or her own
program.
For that reason, AMPA asks that nominations
for this award of recognition come from
individual programs. We would like to hear
from the flight crews, administrators, and/or
program staff about the outstanding
contributions of their medical director.
The nominee should be an AMPA member and
have shown exceptional personal involvement
in the program. We are looking for those that
are considered an invaluable part of the
team’s success and whose contributions to
medical direction, education, quality care,
outreach, safety, and team morale to be part
of the essential fabric of the program…in
short, a leader.
Nominations should be in the form of a one-
page letter, which outlines qualities for which
the medical director should be recognized.
Nominations should be made electronically to
Pat Petersen at the AMPA office to
[email protected] by August 15, 2016.
The Medical Director of the Year will be
announced at the AMPA General Membership
meeting in Long Beach. Current AMPA Board
members are not eligible for the award.

RESEARCH SEED GRANT
An increasing number of young physicians are
experiencing difficulty finding the resources
and support to do research. Consequently,
fewer physicians are choosing careers in
research, which is a terrible loss to medicine.
Subsequently, there are fewer individuals
providing meaningful scientific contributions
specific to the air medical/critical care
transport communities.
To address this trend, AMPA established the
Air Medical Physician Seed Grant Research Award in 2011, to encourage medical students,
resident physicians, and fellows to enter the
research field. The program provides a
$2,500 (US dollar) grant to help the
successful applicant conduct a basic science,
applied, or clinical research project. These
funds will round out new project budgets,
rather than sustain current initiatives, and
will favor research in air medical, prehospital,
or critical care transport.
We received several very competitive grant
applications this year, and the following has
received grant monies for 2016:
“Enhancing Patient Safety in the Critical Care Environment: Use of portable ultrasound to confirm accurate endotracheal tube placement and prevent unrecognized tube migration” – Benjamin Nicholson, MD, NRP – Principal
Investigator; Harinder Dhindsa, MD –
Advisor/AMPA Member – Virginia
Commonweath University, Department of
Emergency Medicine, Richmond, Virginia.
CONGRATULATIONS
to Drs. Nicholson and Dhindsa!

THANK YOU! JOB WELL DONE!
The 2016 CCTMC presented April 11-13 in
Charlotte, North Carolina again hit some of
the highest attendance ever! Over 350 health
care professionals, and 26 exhibitors
participated, coming from all over the United
States, and internationally from Canada,
Sweden, Singapore, New Zealand, United
Kingdom and the United Arab Emirates. Some
comments from attendees included….
I like the laid back atmosphere, and as always, excellent speakers.
Quality of speakers. I haven’t missed one CCTMC in five years and bring a significant number of my staff to this conference.
It’s so pure and free of corporate influence and partying. People come simply to learn how to provide the very best care to really sick people outside the walls of the hospital. The anatomy program was incredible! Short 30-minute lecture format was excellent! Getting updates from extremely competent and experienced people on the latest, literally state-of-the-art and science. Variety of topics! The networking is fantastic. Even when there is nothing revolutionary to report, it validates practice and provides a chance for dialogue. The majority of presentations met my expectations and will in some way, shape, form or modify my management of patients. Good organization, breadth of topics, quality of speakers.
The half-day Ultrasound Workshop,
was presented again this year with continued
popularity. Combined with the annual Critical
Care Procedural Anatomy Program, the clinical
experience that participants receive at
CCTMC is stellar!
Thank you to all of the excellent
speakers at CCTMC with special appreciation

An entrance survey is conducted annually
