Room with a viewAir New Zealand opens its new-look Wellington domestic lounge.

AIR NEW ZEALAND has opened its refurbished domestic lounge at Wellington Airport. The new lounge is slightly larger than the old one and has 374 seats – a 10 percent increase. You’ll find six separate zones: a cafe and bar; barista station; business, lounge and quiet areas; and a self-service food and drinks station.

Air New Zealand General Manager Customer Experience Nikki Goodman says it was fantastic to have the new Wellington domestic lounge up and running before last Christmas for the busy summer period.

“We know customers flying on our services out of the capital love our domestic lounge, so it was great to be able to offer a fresh new space with plenty of seating. We have also expanded our regional lounge at Wellington Airport, adding an extra 56 seats.”

The refurbishments are part of the airline’s national upgrade programme. Air New Zealand has also recently opened new regional lounges in Nelson and New Plymouth, and an Auckland regional lounge that’s more than triple the size of the old one.

Kia oraAS WE CELEBRATE our 80th birthday, I look back on what we’ve achieved together. Our airline has come a tremendously long way over the decades – and we’re only just getting started.

I’ve been with the airline for 17 years and there are many things that make me proud to be an Air New Zealander. These include connecting Kiwis to new destinations all around the globe, flying the most modern aircraft, our world-class uniquely Kiwi service and 10 years of groundbreaking safety videos. We’ve never stopped pushing the limits.

We’ve had the honour of flying Queen Elizabeth II, the Beatles, Pope John Paul II and Sir Peter Blake as the team came home with the America’s Cup. And we get to partner with some incredible organisations, such as the Department of Conservation, the National Geographic Society, Koru Care New Zealand and Antarctica New Zealand.

The thing I am most proud of is our relentless appetite to constantly innovate and create a better experience every time our customers step aboard our aircraft. We were the first in the world to introduce the Skycouch, we recently partnered with NASA to help collect data around climate change, and we were the first in the world to serve plant-based ‘meat’ and edible cups to our customers. Our latest Skynest innovation could see the first lie-flat offering to customers travelling in Economy on our long-haul routes.

Ultimately, it’s been our customers who drive us to innovate and punch above our weight on the world stage.

Whether this is your first or 500th flight with us, I want to thank you for supporting Air New Zealand as we look to take our airline sustainably ahead for another 80 years and beyond.

Bringing birdsong back to our Great WalksOur beautiful environment cannot thrive on its own. New Zealand has over 4,000 threatened native species and with more than 25 million native birds dying each year, we have all got a responsibility to restore and maintain it. That’s why we have been working with the Department of Conservation since 2012 to bring birdsong back to our Great Walks. We support a range of sustained predator control initiatives to help protect our feathered friends. It’s essential for creating safe havens so our native wildlife can flourish.

AFTER BEING CONSIDERED functionally extinct from the South Island since the 90s, the rarest waterfowl on mainland New Zealand, the pāteke/brown teal, is doing well in the Arthur Valley, Fiordland.

Forty-eight pāteke have been released in the Arthur Valley, home to the Milford Track, adding to the 63 rehomed in March 2019. Pāteke have been released into the area since 2009 in an attempt to rebuild the population. Over the past two years this work has gained significant traction, with this release bringing the Pāteke Recovery Group one step closer to its goal of re-establishing a self-sustaining population.

Department of Conservation (DOC) Senior Ranger, Andrew (Max) Smart says he was pleased by how many pāteke survived the winter, and attributes this to the strong programme of predator control in the area.

“There is a large trapping effort in the Arthur as well as landscape-scale predator control that helps keep predator numbers in check,” he says.

Funding from Air New Zealand is enabling predator control efforts, with traps maintained across 4500ha in the Arthur Valley. As part of its partnership with DOC the airline also provided flights for the birds from Christchurch to Queenstown, plus some welcome assistance from Air New Zealanders.Digital Communications Specialist Ben Cutore and Account Support’s Anna Hore, who are a part of the airline’s community of conservationists, the Greenteam, helped release 48 pāteke/brown teal back into the Arthur Valley in February.

“I’m proud to be out here helping release these pāteke back into their natural habitat,” says Hore. “It’s not often you get to see the behind-the-scenes work DOC does for conservation, so I feel very privileged to be here.”

Air New Zealand Head of Sustainability Lisa Daniell says the airline is proud to be part of such initiatives – helping to protect and enhance native species such as pāteke.

“It’s rewarding to see the funds we provide for pest traps achieving real results for our native bird populations. Our employees also delight in working on translocation flights, where they play a tangible part in delivering birds to their new safe haven.”

The Arthur Valley is one of only two sites

Return of the pātekeThanks to conservation efforts, the native brown teal is back in the South Island.

that make transfers possible. Without them, there would be no birds to release.

The committed collaborators have been working together to support pāteke and to continue predator-control efforts. The aim is for 300 birds to be released over the next few years to give them the best chance of establishing a self-sustaining population.

“I’m pretty happy with the survival we’ve seen so far in the Arthur Valley,” Smart says, “but there is definitely a lot of work still to do for pāteke to make a solid comeback on the mainland.”

in the South Island where DOC is working to re-establish a wild population of pāteke and it is the first to try, Smart says.

“What we find out here will make a big difference for the future of the species.”

The work to restore the pāteke population requires many helping hands and is supported by Ngāi Tahu. Before pāteke can be released, conditioning takes place at Peacock Springs in Christchurch, a facility run by the Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust. The Pāteke Recovery Group has 14 captive-breeding facilities across the country

THE FIRST BEER in New Zealand to be Toitū certified carbon zero is available on tap at Air New Zealand lounges in Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington throughout April. Kiwi Pale Ale (4.8 percent), is the result of efforts by Christchurch brewery The Fermentist to reduce its carbon footprint.

Brewery General Manager Simon Taylor says, “Our CO2 reduction initiatives include using solar panels for electricity and hot water, switching to a hybrid car for Christchurch deliveries, sourcing raw materials from local producers to reduce transport impacts, composting all organic waste from both the brewery and taproom,

and lots of other team-lead initiatives that reduce our overall impact and production of CO2.

“We still produce CO2 from our operations, but what we do produce is offset with native forest restoration projects at the Hinewai Reserve on Banks Peninsula,” he adds.

The beer is a light, easy drop that strikes a refreshing balance between Motueka hops and 100 percent New Zealand malt.

The Fermentist’s carbon-zero Kiwi Pale Ale is available on tap in Air New Zealand’s Wellington and Christchurch domestic lounges, and in the domestic, regional and international lounges at Auckland Airport.

LOOKING FOR LOCAL activities recognised for quality and sustainability? Check out the Qualmark-endorsed attractions that can now be booked through Air New Zealand. Qualmark is New Zealand tourism’s official quality assurance organisation that awards endorsements for commitment to quality, safety and sustainability.

Qualmark takes into account four key areas when giving a tourist attraction a gold, silver or bronze award: economic; social and people; environment and culture; and health, safety and wellness. When looking at the environmental aspects of a business, for instance, it examines whether operators are aware of the resources they require, whether they are monitoring their usage, and evidence that the business is exploring more efficient ways to reduce their footprint.

To promote and support businesses that are committed to sustainability, Air New Zealand has developed, in partnership with Bookme, a dedicated site for booking New Zealand activities and attractions that have achieved a Qualmark endorsement.

Air New Zealand Tourism Partnership Manager Jenny Simpson says, “As an organisation committed to sustainability, we wanted to support tourism businesses that are equally committed to making

New Zealand a world-class sustainable visitor destination. By working with Qualmark, our customers can be assured that all the activities featured have undergone an independent assessment that not only covers health and safety,

but also environmental, economic and social sustainability.”

Visitors can choose from more than 170 activities listed on the website. Winners of the 2019 Qualmark 100% Pure New Zealand Experience Awards are among the ventures listed – meaning Gold-rated businesses have been acknowledged for demonstrating excellence in the categories of tiaki/care, manaakitanga/hospitality and whānau. These include Kaitiaki Adventures, Rotorua Canopy Tours, Redwoods Treewalk, Franz Josef Glacier Guides and Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa. AIRPOINTS™ MEMBERS HAVE until the end of the month to help send Kiwi kids on inspiring educational trips. Each year Airpoints for Schools gives 10 New Zealand schools the chance to receive up to 20,000 Airpoints Dollars™ towards domestic or international Air New Zealand flights.

Last year, these donations helped Opunake High School fly 10 students in its Sustainability Academy to Fiji. The focus of that trip was to immerse students in Fijian culture and get them thinking about how to help those less well-off than themselves. Opunake High had recently won a silver Enviroschools award, so the students were keen to share their eco-knowledge, skills

PROJECT GREEN, Air New Zealand’s glass recycling and product-use waste reduction initiative, has successfully diverted almost 900 tonnes of inflight waste from landfill since its launch in 2017. That’s the equivalent weight of five Boeing 777-300 aircraft.

Unused items from a flight that might have previously gone to landfill can now be put onto a subsequent flight, provided they are sealed and untouched. There are more than 40 items covered by Project Green, including cans of soft drink, packets of cookies, boxed tea, coffee and sugar sachets, and sealed napkins. These were reclassified as part of a collaboration between the airline, catering partner LSG Sky Chefs and the Ministry for Primary Industries.

Before the initiative, these types of unopened items would have been incinerated. Since the project’s launch, Air New Zealand has recovered more than 11.5 million plastic glasses, more than four million sticks of sugar and 85 tonnes of 1.5L water bottles – the equivalent weight of two Airbus A320 planes.

Air New Zealand General Manager Supply Chain Chloe Surridge says the airline is using data collected from the roll-out of Project Green at airports in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown and Los Angeles to assess flight loading requirements and to look for more

opportunities to reduce waste at source.“We are also working on ways to further

segregate the waste that is collected in flight. A major challenge we face in reducing waste to landfill is the lack of recycling and composting infrastructure available for us to send our material to.

“More robust infrastructure across the country, including in the regions, would

help us keep compostables and recyclables out of landfills. Project Green is a very good example of the steps Air New Zealand is taking to build sustainability into its supply chain.

“We are looking to make sustainability gains and, in order to do this, we have to enable these bigger conversations through relationships with our suppliers and business partners.”

and systems, as well as tutor the Fijian students in English.

Highlights of the trip included enjoying the hospitality of a Fijian family and sharing

their own culture through haka and waiata performances. The students also went snorkelling, hiking and horse-riding, and helped locals make roti and catch prawns.

“The students have returned to our kura with an aim to develop and embrace cultural diversity in all areas of the school,” says Opunake High School deputy principal Andrea Hooper.

Air New Zealand has selected the 10 schools to receive this year’s Airpoints Dollars donations, and there’s still time to help make their dream trips possible. To make a donation, which Air New Zealand will match, go to airpoints.co.nz/schools before April 30.
