INTRODUCTION Air conditioning is the conditioning of air within a defined space, usually a residence or a place of business. Conditioning usually involves heating or cooling, humidifying or dehumidifying, and filtering or cleaning air and controlling its moisture level: conditioning it to provide maximum indoor comfort. An air conditioner transfers heat from the inside of a building, where it is not wanted, to the outside. Refrigerant in the system absorbs the excess heat and is pumped through a closed system of piping to an outside coil. A fan blows outside air over the hot coil, transferring heat from the refrigerant to the outdoor air. It is because the heat is removed from the indoor air, the indoor area is cooled. Air-conditioning is a system giving automatic control of the required environmental conditions, by method of heating, cooling, humidification, dehumidification, cleaning and movement of air in the building, vehicles and others. OBJECTIVE The objective of this activity is To observe and determine the main components of air conditioning system and illustrate the overall basic operation of the system LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the laboratory activities, student would be able to 1. Acquire knowledge on the basic components of an air conditioning system 2. Describe the basic function of the components 3. Explain the basic operation of an air conditioning system Theoretical Background An air conditioning system handles a mixture of a large amount of dry air with a small amount of water vapour in indoor space. An air conditioner transfers heat from the inside of a building, where it is not wanted, to theoutside. It is because the heat is removed from the indoor air, the indoor area iscooled.Air-conditioning is a system giving automatic control of the reuired environmental conditions, bymethod of heating, cooling, humidification, dehumidification, cleaning and movement of air in thebuilding, vehicles and others.OBJECTIVE!he ob"ective of this activity is!o observe and determinethe main components of air conditioning system and illustrate the overall basic operation of the systemLEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the laboratory activities, student would be able to#. Acuire $nowledge on the basic components of an air conditioning system%. &escribe the basic function of the components'. (xplain the basic operation of an air conditioning systemTheoretical BackgrounAn air conditioning system handles a mixture of a large amount of dry air with a small amount of water vapour in indoor space. !he water vapour is at the same temperature as the dry air exerts only a small partial pressure because there is not much water vapour presence. In order to give a comfort condition to the occupants, this indoor air need to be cooled. )hen two ob"ect at different temperatures are place next to each other, heat will flow from the warmer of two ob"ects to the cooler one. !he raid at which heat is transferred depends on how large the difference is between their temperature. !his is the principle applied in split air conditioning model. An air conditioner does not cool the air, but rather, remove the heat from the comfined space. !he refrigeration cycle of the air conditioning system transfer the heat from indoor space to outdoor space. !ro"le# $tate#ent*plit Air Conditioning model stimulates the common systems used in buildings. !he unit is euipped with the four main components which are compressor, expansion valve, evaporator and condenser. (ach of the components has its own function in conditioning the room temperature to provide comfortness to the occupants. Air conditioning system can provide cool air the building+s occupants by re"ecting the heat from indoor to the outdoor in this laboratory. !he students are reuired to observe the component and identify which part involved the process of releasing heat or absorbing heat. *tudent need to prepare a report highlighting few important aspects related to air conditioning systems.!roceure$#. !he ,ain *witch of the *plit -nit Air Conditioner ,odel is turned ./.%. !he *plit -nit Air Conditioning ,odel is turned on by using remote control and cooling mode is used as the default setting.'. !emperature setting is set at %0oC1. !he main components of the Air conditioning ,odel is determined 2compressor, expansion valve, condenser, and evaporator34. !he process that ta$e place at the main components of *plit Air Conditioning ,odel was observed 2compressor, expansion valve, condenser, evaporator35. !he observation was described and the process involved at each of the main components of *plit Air Conditioning ,odel was explained.condensorcompressor(xpansion valveevaporator
