13

The In-flight Security Measures Profiling of Passengers by CREW

•We have to observe people more closely at the airport and on the

aircraft.

•We must focus on cues that will aid us in detection of terrorists before

committing their deadly acts.

•Instead of looking for bad things – security system must looking for bad

people.

FOR AIRLINE PERSONEL, THIS IS THE ESSENCE OF TRUE

PROFILING.

The In-flight Security Measures Profiling of Passengers by CREW

•One of the major difficulties in finding terrorists anywhere in the world is

they do not wear signs around their necks or on their backs that say

„TERRORIST“.

•It is essential to aviation that skills training in situational awareness,

communication, crew coordination, and decision-making are taught

effectively to all flight crew

Looking for „Absence of the Normal“

and „Presence of Abnormal“

Page 16: Airport security 2013 ladislav kaspar

16

Stress cues and their sources

• Where to watch x What to watch for

1. Head (eyes, mouth/lips, brows, cheeks,hair, neck)

2. Hands and arms

3. Legs and feet

4. Other body movements or indications to look for

5. Nervous attitudinal behaviors

6. Other potentially abnormal/hazardous behaviors to watch for

17

Looking for „Absence of the Normal“ and „Presence of Abnormal“

• Looking for absence of the normal goes well beyond profiling based upon gender, race, color, language, dress, etc.

• Absence of the normal focuses on „what is missing from the picture?“

• Presence of the abnormal focuses on what is in picture that should not be.

• Many times, absence of the normal is accompanied by presence of the abnormal.

The In-flight Security Measures Profiling of Passengers by CREW

• Everyone who steps aboard your airliner needs profiling in one way or another.

• It is essential that you keep your mind open as you speak with passengers and other crewmembers.

• Air rage incidents rarely begin „out of blue“.

• Therefore, profiling must be practiced on a daily basis to become an effective weapon against terrorism.

• The proper use of profiling could safe your life.

• We have to be sure that we eliminate the stereotyping and prevent the process from gaining widespread use.
