Relationships are the personal links and communication channels we use every daywhether that is in our day to day, professional or business lives. They form the basisfor just about everything we do even in an environment that continually embracesautomated message systems, emails and impersonal call centres. Our relationshipscan stimulate loyalty, respect, consideration, responsiveness and emotion in manydifferent ways and this is especially true in our business dealings with colleagues, customers, partners and suppliers.

These relationships need time to mature, commitment to maintain the connection and build into a trust based platform but most of all they need to develop an understanding of each other’s needs, interests and expectations. Thesefactors help us all to develop a network of people we deal with and who we canhave open dialogues about more complex and sensitive issues than we would witha stranger or someone we have just met. The broader the network and the deeperthe relationships, the greater our ability to deliver the expectations of colleagues and customers that ultimately, creates value in our business and personal relationships.

In our business lives nurturing existing relationships is an important feature of lifebut opening and developing new ones is critical to potential future growth. Theability to make contact with the right people, have an understanding of their expectations and deliver an initial introduction that resonates with their aims isvital. All of this may stand on the first few minutes or the circumstances of an introduction and getting this right may well shape not only the basis of a long termrelationship but also the premise for future business opportunities. At WEAF we are focussed on developing relationships with and for our members.Providing the opportunity to consolidate existing or open initial relationshipscontinues to be our goal with the provision of events and networking opportunities that bring together relationships. The WEAF Conference was a greatexample of relationship development in action and we aim to continue that quality of opportunity environment.

Most of all relationships should be treated as investments just like any other wemake in business, just like capital equipment, training or personal development because they can ensure we all maximise the understanding and delivery of theneeds of our relationship stakeholders. In WEAF we feel we have a stake in your future relationship investments by delivering relationship opportunities.

Welcome

Barry Warburton, Chief Executive, WEAF

Relationships can be very strong especially when established in business networks. This is the process of establishing amutually beneficial relationship with other business people and potential clients and/or customers.

The key to true business networking is the mutually beneficial relationship, and that's an incredibly rare event if all youexpect is to shake hands and exchange your business-card and do immediate business. The purpose in developing relationships through business networking is to increase business revenue - one way or another. The improvement in the bottom line can be immediately apparent, as in developing a relationship with a new client, orcan develop over time, as in learning a new business skill.

WEAF, I believe, delivers against the best business networking groups in class. It operates as an exchange of business information, ideas, and support. The most important skill for effective business networking is listening; focusing on howyou can help the person you are listening to rather than on how he or she can help you is the first step to establishinga mutually beneficial relationship that is what WEAF continues to have as its most important facet to members.

However change can sometimes make the relationship go through a period of instability but we hope the changesmade by WEAF over the past year have shown you that that is not necessarily the case. New offers, new events, newservices have all been introduced to allow you to get more from the network. Another change you will already have noticed is AirTalk. It has gone digital, making it convenient to read and share with colleagues, customers and suppliersthus continuing to develop those relationships but retaining the option to print for those who prefer hard copy. You willsee it has also doubled in size.

Now here’s the rub if you offer an article it will now be seen by potentially by 3000 people so what are youwaiting for.... get those news stories in!

You never know, this form of Networking might improve your bottom line.

Fine Tubes Ltdachieves specialist NadcapAccreditation for Welding

Fine Tubes, the UK’s leading manufacturer of precision metal tubing, has been recognised for its ongoing commitment to quality and continual processes improvement by receiving the latest Nadcap Accreditation for

Welding.

In meeting the stringent requirements of Nadcap accreditation, Fine Tubes has demonstrated its commitment to achievingthe highest quality standards by satisfying customer requirements and industry specifications.“Fine Tubes continually strives to enhance its special processes. Thus, in achieving this high-status accreditation, we have improved various areas of our welding procedures. The process controls were consolidated and formalised into documentedPCMs which generated a formal approval process for weld mill operators and inspectors. This has led to improved training andawareness of the whole weld mill and technical teams”, explains Rob Eatwell, Quality Assurance Manager at Fine Tubes.

Specifically the Nadcap accreditation grants Fine Tubes to conduct longitudinal fusion welding of tubes and entitles the company to appear on the Quality Manufacturers List. Rob Eatwell further comments: “Fine Tubes are now on the Nadcapaccredited special process list for welding - joining our Heat Treating and NDE qualifications. Quality is at the foundation ofall our operations and this will help to cement customer confidence in our tube welding processes as we aim to exceed industrystandards.”

“Achieving Nadcap accreditation is not easy: it is one of the ways in which the aerospace industry identifies those who excelat manufacturing quality product through superior special processes. Companies such as Fine Tubes work hard to obtain thisstatus and they should be justifiably proud of it,” said Joe Pinto, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at the Performance Review Institute. “PRI is proud to support continual improvement in the aerospace industry by helping companies such as Fine Tubes be successful and we look forward to continuing to assist the industry moving forward.”

City Engineering (Bristol) Ltd has, this spring, been awarded accreditation to the Aerospace Standard AS9100 rev C. Thepurpose behind upgrading the Quality Management System from ISO9001:2008 was to further develop markets in theAerospace and Defence sectors as well as to consolidate City’s position with existing clients in the Nuclear, Oil and Gas,and Semi-conductor industries.

City Engineering specialises in supplying sheet metal and fabricated components to companies within the advanced engineering sector. It is a long established business (1946), still under family ownership, trading from its own 30,000square feet premises close to the M32. Employing 45 personnel, the company has a very high-level skill base with technology to match including two laser profiling centres, one of which is the most advanced fibre laser manufacturedby Trumpf.

The transition to AS9100 was greatly assisted by the contribution of fellow WEAF member, David Burns of AerospaceCompliance. Starting from the free half-day consultation offered to WEAF members, a programme was developed specifying the tasks to be achieved and the time scales for doing so. As Managing Director, Steve Woodbury, emphasises “the great danger with projects like this is that they can drag on for years with everyone losing direction andmotivation. David ensured that our path was well defined and that all the milestones were reached on time. From beginning to end, the whole process took six months”.

City Engineering is not about to rest on its laurels. The company has already been identified as a potential case-study inthe ‘Fit for Nuclear’ programme organised by the Nuclear AMRC. This programme is intended to prepare the supply chainfor the influx of business when the Nuclear new-build gets under way. In addition City is working towards the environmental standard ISO 14001.

AS9100 is one more building block for City Engineering to ensure its role as a major sheet metal/fabrication supplier inthe region. In the words of Steve Woodbury, “the world is not going to become an easier place to earn a living over thenext ten years and we have to make sure that City is up there among the very best companies in the industry.”

Altran wins WEAF Innovation & Technolgy for Growth Award 2012

AwardsWEAF

Altran has won the 2012 West of England Aerospace Forum (WEAF) Award for Innovation & Technology for Growth, in recognition of its work on the Airbus/Advanced Integrated Rapid Geometry Morphing Environment (AIRGEOM). The AIRGEOM project was launched in late 2010 and successfully completed in late 2011. AIRGEOM enables the creation, visualisation and investigation of the shape of deformed structure, based on finite element analysis predictions or otherwise. It also enables the migration of functionality from legacy knowledge based systems to modern PLM platforms. The award was presented to Altran’s project team, led by Dexter D’Silva, at the 2012 WEAF Awards for Excellence in Aerospace & Defence, held in Weston-super-Mare on 27th February.

The Airbus requirements were broadly considered along the following streams:

1. To visualise and investigate the shape of the deformed aircraft structure under different loading and operating configurations such as assembly, fuel loading, landing, take-off and normal cruise.

2. To replace or replicatefunctionality from legacy knowledge based systems with a view to reducing the dependency on unsupported computing platforms.

The fundamental premise of the implemented solution was to exploit the existing CATIA V5 PLM product portfolio tocreate a coherent and cost-effective toolset that achieved all of the project aims. This was achieved by utilising commercialcore technology and where necessary developing interfaces, algorithms and methodologies to create a cohesive designenvironment.

The toolset is applicable across all aircraft programmes and while predominantly wing based is not wholly confined tothis.

Flying high as Omega Engineering Services wins WEAF Business Improvement Award 2012

As one of the largest test solutions providers in the UK, Omega Engineering Services has achieved extraordinary sales growthover the last years.

MD Andrew Hopcraft attributed the growth to the Omega team stating they “have embraced our culture and driven throughthe changes we have needed to make, with every single member of the business working towards the same goal.” Omegacreated an impressive strategy to build their customer base, having initially relied heavily on one client to bring them 95%of their business. A focused sales drive, together with a commitment to listen to their clients, not to overpromise and ultimately deliver quality has delivered outstanding growth, with both the workforce and turnover growing threefold in justa few years. As proud holders of the SC21 Silver Award, they are also the only company to have achieved Bronze to Silverstatus in just 8 months.

Omega have been able to use their considerable engineering expertise and experience to work collaboratively with clients to design and manufacture test equipment. They are often embedded in their customer development teams to add expertise at the front end of a project, when ideas are in their infancy, which ultimately reducesthe project duration and risk. Their expertise and attention to detail combined with their quality on-time delivery (andaward winning service) develops a deep, growing level of trust from customers; even though they are an outsourced test equipment manufacturer, they are increasingly no longer seen purely as a supplier, but a true value partner.

Omega were presented with their award by Paul Marston, Managing Director of NatWest South West Commercial Banking at the WEAF Annual Conference in Weston-Super-Mare.

Pensions Auto-enrolement

by Milsted Langdon

The new compulsory staff pension schemes, “auto-enrolment”, started at the end of last year and willgradually affect more and more employers. The schemehas been in the pipeline for a long time and for many ofus it’s easy to think that it still won’t affect us for sometime to come.

However many employers will be affected next year andnow is the time to start planning. If you are pricing contracts that will run for some time, or just putting together budgets, you need to know when and how thechanges will affect you.

KEY ISSUESThe first thing you must find out is when it affects you. Employers with over 500 staff will be affected in 2013 andfor those with 60-500 staff, they must comply with therules in 2014. In most cases, your exact start date will depend on the precise number of staff you employed in2012. All employers will receive written notification of theirstart date well in advance.

The detailed rules are cumbersome but the importantthing for employers is not necessarily for you to knowwhich of your staff are “entitled workers”, “non-eligible job-holders” or “eligible jobholders”, but to ensure that yourpayroll software automatically tells you which categorypeople are in and what pension contributions you need topay as a result.

WHAT MUST YOU DO?As well as finding out your start date and ensuring youhave the right systems in place, you also need to considerwhether your existing pension scheme will meet the newrequirements. Unless you plan to keep your employees’pension cash in a biscuit tin beside your desk, it should notbe difficult to find a pension scheme which is capable ofmeeting the requirements.

The difficulty will be in the practical administration of thisscheme. For example all “eligible jobholders” must be automatically enrolled in the scheme and have the firstmonth’s contributions deducted from their pay. They thenhave a month to say they don’t like it and can leave thescheme, with you paying them a refund. Every three years, you have to repeat that process for people who have optedout of the scheme.

WHAT WILL IT COST?Contributions will be phased in over several years and thestandard level of contributions will eventually become 8%(3% employer, 5% employee). Depending on how you setthe scheme up, the total figure could be 7% or 9% (withthe latter meaning a 4% employer contribution). As part of your budgeting, you need to consider how a possible 3% or 4% addition to your payroll costs can bemanaged. One means of mitigating this cost is to set thepension up on a “salary exchange” basis, which can providethe same pension benefits to employees at a much lowercost to the employer. You should also not underestimatethe administration costs that may be incurred in settingthis up, notifying employees and dealing with the inevitable employee queries.

START PLANNING NOWThe key to successfully dealing with this, mitigating thecosts and getting a positive response from employees is tostart planning now. The first stage is to get a clear understanding of how and when these changes will affectyou so you can plan for a smooth implementation.Steve Horton is a director of Milsted Langdon FinancialServices and will be happy to provide any further information that members require. Employment Law

A E R O S P A C E & D E F E N C E

Keeping WEAF Members up-to-date

Employment law reform, your starter for ten…..This month sees the first of the changes brought in by themuch heralded Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Act 2013,which aims to deliver on the Government’s promises of givingmore flexibility to employers and cutting red tape.

The summer will see a new cap on the compensatory awardin unfair dismissal claims. Following a significant hike from£12,000 to £50,000 in 1999, the cap has increased year onyear to the current cap of £74,200. This will now be limitedto 12 months’ earnings or £74,200, whichever is the lower.

Another change results from a case brought by an employeesacked due to his political affiliation with the BNP. As he hadless than a year’s service at the time, he was unable to bringan unfair dismissal claim. He took his claim to the EuropeanCourt of Human Rights and the ECHR held that the UK’s unfairdismissal regime, which requires continuous service of then 1year and now 2 years, infringed his human right to ‘freedomof association’ as the unfair dismissal regime left him withouta remedy through the courts/tribunal.

In response, the new Act removes the need for any qualifyingperiod where the main or principal reason for dismissal is anemployee’s political affiliation or opinion. Such claims maybe few and far between but the change offers protection tothose who like to talk politics on the shop floor......

Further tweaks to the unfair dismissal regime (again due thissummer) will come with the introduction of ‘protected conversations’. This means that an employer can offer a financial package but if agreement is not reached, that offercannot be referred to in any ensuing unfair dismissal claim. The idea being that this allows for a ‘grown up’ conversationand no doubt quick result, without the risk of the offer beingused against the employer.

There are a couple of points worth noting, as this ‘protection’will not apply if there are any other claims brought (such asdiscrimination) and it will not apply if there has been any “improper conduct”. It is perhaps inevitable that the questionof what amounts to ‘improper conduct’ will be hotly debated.

Although the changes introduced under the new Act do notstop there, that is enough of an appetiser, the further changesincluding employee share holder status, changes to TUPE, andextending flexible working to all employees will follow in theAutumn of 2013 and Spring of 2014, of which more later..

On a mission...One missing element in WEAF’s relationship with the members was that of an international dimension. To cover thatarea WEAF have gone into partnership with UKTI in the South West to offer a programme of missions over the comingyears which will help you identify new markets and new possibilities. We aim to focus on key growth areas around theworld, the Middle East, Asia, India and the America’s finally not forgetting Eastern Europe and Russia. All are emergingareas of opportunity, whether it is JV’s or export or establishing a base all will be catered for.

WHY you might ask and WHY NOW, well to be honest we should have done this 2 years ago but at that time we werenot ready to offer this first class journey into the global supply chains. In this highly competitive world new marketsneed to be addressed by you before competitors step in. The aim of the missions are to fully support you in your decision making process, prepare you fully for the mission and support you during and after the mission.

So what is a Trade Mission? - well it is many things; In a nutshell, Trade Missions are organised to help UK companies visit the market place they’re interested in so that they can talk face-to-face with prospective businesspartners, but it can be much more than that.

These Trade Missions will be organised in the UK by WEAF and UKTI South West via the UKTI network. We aim to develop and run a number of missions overseas during the coming years. These will be sector focused on aerospace.WEAF will inform you of the missions and the programmes leading up to and after.

So what are the benefits?

work together

Making the right connectionsThe Aerospace and Advanced Engineering iNet offers a range of support

services in its own right but also acts as a brokering service, connecting

SME businesses with other funded support organisations and sources of

funding. SME business owners and leaders are often at a disadvantage

relative to large businesses mainly due to having fewer full time managers

with the time and opportunity to scan the horizon and look outside the

business. SME leaders and managers tend to be hands on and focused

internally, often wearing many hats and with little free time. So, the very

SME businesses that are the target market for many of the support

organisations are often the least aware of what is available. That’s where

the iNet comes in, spending time with the SME business to understand their

needs and coming up with recommendations on who to talk to. We cannot

be the fount of all knowledge but we can often connect you with someone

with the knowledge you need.

Two common questions arise:

• What help is there to help me to grow my business?

• How can I get access to funding for investment and innovation?

We have ready answers to the first question as we can assist with some

aspects and there are other programmes available to most SMEs in the

region. The answer to the second question is a much more complex as it

often varies according to which county you are in and it’s a constantly

changing picture. There are now six Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEP’s)

established in the South West and they are now securing funding for

various types of investment in the region. If you don’t know which LEP you

fall under or know what they are offering, let us know and we will help you

to make the right connections.

If you would like to take advantage of any of these opportunities please

contact Angela Weids at the WEAF Office on 01275 872 353.

OC Robotics consortiumreceives funding

The nuclear industry received a boost as Business Secretary Vince Cable announced major new funding

awards that will enhance the supply chain and increase opportunities to commercialise new

technologies in the sector.

The funding will support 35 projects across the UK in developing new technologies for the

construction, operation and decommissioning of nuclear power plants. This will bring together over 60

experienced organisations including Laing O’Rourke, Sheffield Forgemasters and EDF. They will work

alongside innovative small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and universities.

The £18 million joint funding between the Technology Strategy Board, the Department of Energy and

Climate Change (DECC), the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and the Engineering and Physical

Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is expected to leverage in an additional £13 million making the total

value of the projects £31 million.

One of the projects to receive major investment is a consortium led by Bristol-based OC Robotics. They

have received nearly £6 million in funding.

The company is developing a new technology called LaserSnake. It is a robot- controlled laser cutting

tool that can be used underwater or above ground in confined and hazardous spaces. It could play a key

role in nuclear decommissioning projects to dismantle vessels, support structures and pipe work.

The new funding will help OC Robotics to develop the technology to a full demonstration project which

could lead to the UK being a world leader in this technology. It also has the potential to be used across

other sectors including the military and construction industries.

Dr Adrian Simper, the NDA’s Strategy and Technology Director, said: “We were extremely pleased with

the level of interest in decommissioning projects from both established organisations and smaller, newer

businesses. Our decommissioning strategy focuses very much on developing innovative technologies

through collaborative working, while joint funding initiatives such as this increase the investment potential

and provide much broader opportunities for interested partners. We also welcome the comprehensive

nature of the subject areas, covering new build as well as decommissioning, which will enable the sharing

and transfer of technologies between the different nuclear sectors.”

By 2030 it is forecast that globally there will be £930 billion investment in building new reactors and £250

billion in decommissioning those that are coming off-line. The nuclear new build programme in the UK

alone could generate up to 40,000 jobs at its peak. The nuclear industrial strategy sets out the basis for

a long-term partnership between Government and industry to exploit those opportunities.

Innovation where it counts

Metaltech Precision Limited, based in Chard, Somerset, has grown to be one of

the largest subcontract suppliers of machined and fabricated parts in the South

West, manufacturing components for clients in the pump, petrochemical, rail,

automotive, valve, tobacco, oil and gas and motorsport industries.

Build to print companies like Metaltech can sometimes struggle to embrace innovation as

without a definable end product the opportunity to be innovative with product design and

marketing is missing, so some clear thinking is required. Managing Director, Steve Hill, is very

clear on the areas where innovation pays dividends at Metaltech:

• Continuous investment in the latest production technology

• Developing a culture of continuous improvement

• Building a skilled and motivated team at all levels

Latest technology

Production machines are constantly evolving and each evolution brings increased speed,

capability and flexibility. Investment in technology helps Metaltech to maintain their position at

the forefront of the industry and around £500k is invested every year to ensure that productivity

and product quality remain ahead of the field. Latest acquisitions include a Doosan Puma V550

Vertical Lathe and a Doosan Puma HP5100 Horizontal Machining Centre both producing castings

for the petrochemicals industry. Consistent product quality, customer satisfaction and

production efficiencies are assured by investing in machines that are fit for purpose.

Continuous improvement

The Metaltech ethos of continuous

improvement encourages all

employees to get involved in

introducing operational changes

that improve company performance

and the work environment. Unlike

investments in machines, which are

expensive, continuous improvement

need not be expensive but does

need to be supported both

financially and with enthusiasm by

the company leadership. New shop

floor layouts, floor painting, lean

processes and visual measurement

and information systems are all

evidence of the commitment of the whole team. The changes have dramatically improved team

involvement and pride in the operation and customer service has benefited as a result.

Page 33: Airtalk summer 2013

Team building

Team building and development is another area where the company can be justifiably proud of its

record. The Metaltech leadership team has completed leadership development with the Aerospace and

Advanced Engineering iNet to increase the team focus on innovation and growth. Innovation invariably

starts at the top.

The company currently has five apprentices and was recently awarded ‘Employee of the Year for SMEs

from Yeovil College. Danielle Grinter, QA/HS/HR manager says: “AgustaWestland won in the large

business category so we’re in pretty good company. Apprenticeships have always been important at

Metaltech and I undertook my own apprenticeship here. I’m a qualified engineer and have grown into

my role in the business. In the last couple of years our reputation for providing excellent training has

really sky rocketed.”

Steve Hill adds “ Engineering is crucial to the future of this country and vital to help us re-balance our

economy. A vital part of this lies in training the talent we so desperately need. Apprenticeships are key

to this and I am determined to see Metaltech play their part. We realise without a skilled

workforce expansion will always be limited.”

Innovation pays

Does innovation bring commercial success? For Metaltech it’s a resounding yes. April 2013 resulted

in a record £750k of orders received into the business. Recession or no recession, innovation does

pay.

Page 34: Airtalk summer 2013

The fortunes of Morgan Motors, the iconic British vehicle manufacturer are at an all-time high, with

sales of its traditional roadsters with their wooden chassis being matched by demand for new

models such as the stunning aluminium-based Aero Coupe and the Morgan 3 Wheeler. All of which is

placing extra demand on component production at its Malvern Link machine shop.

Some years ago Morgan Motors was renowned for its extended delivery times, with production at

8-10 vehicles per week. Thanks to a combination of hard work, determination and investment, those

days are long behind the iconic sports car company and, while traditional methods still prevail,

production now exceeds 25 cars per week. This rise in productivity has led to

increased pressure on the machine shop. With new models, including the stunning Aero Coupe

supercar, being very well received demand continues to rise and investment and restructuring of the

machine shop became a priority for Steve Morris, Morgan Operations Director. “Due to the limited

space we have here at Morgan when the need to find additional room for assembly of the 3 Wheeler

arose we had to make room somehow, and reducing the floor space of the machine shop by a third

was the only viable option. For this older machine tools had to be sold and new machines and

processes introduced.”

One particular bottleneck was the manufacture of half shafts for Morgan’s New 3 Wheeler and

traditional vehicles. The area of concern was the finishing of two bores that located the suspension

struts. Morgan’s original process was to hand-hone these, but this was creating inconsistencies, with

bores not being aligned and varying in roundness. This in turn caused issues with warranty claims as

they wore very quickly once in use, meaning that production was being diverted to provide spares,

rather than going into assembly.

For a solution to the problem

Morgan turned to its near neighbour

Delapena Honing Equipment and its

Speedhone E honing machine,

along with in-depth applications

knowledge and engineering support

from its Cheltenham base. “We

worked closely with Delapena to

overcome this particular issue, and

the process was made easier due to

the shared manufacturing traditions

and principles of the two

companies,” says Mark Cerrone.

Machine shop and Morgan 3

Wheeler Head of Department “The

level of service and support, along

with the applications engineering

knowledge has been exceptional.

The fact that Delapena are nearby

was simply an added bonus for us.”

Delapena identified particular

issues with the raw material prior to

honing and suggested a pre-honing

operation to remove excess weld

and prepare the bores for finish

honing. The result is a process now

Morgan Motors and Delapena work

together to drive productivity

Page 35: Airtalk summer 2013

highly efficient in terms of parts produced, but also one that has been de-skilled to a certain degree,

in that the traditional knowledge of hand honing techniques is no longer required and production

can be carried out by a number of the craftsmen employed at Morgan. The quality of the bores

being honed, in particular the consistency of roundness, has improved the service life of these

components with warranty claims greatly reduced.

“The fact that we can manufacture these half shafts to a very high level of quality and

consistency, using a reliable process that does not rely on the accumulated

knowledge of just one or two of our craftsmen is a big step forward for us,” says Mark Cerrone.

“That said, here at Morgan we retain the craftsmen along with the traditional skills that they have,

as this is part of the Morgan brand.

We recognise that improving productivity isn’t always about replacing people with machine tools,

combining the wealth of knowledge with modern manufacturing techniques can be a win-win

situation. As a result our machining capacity will remain a mix of traditional manufacturing

methods combined with modern machine tools, such as the Speedhone E from Delapena. We have

a philosophy at Morgan that we work to the job, not to the clock, and in maintaining that we will

ensure that the iconic status of our products that has been gained over 100 years or more, will

continue.”
