Energy Efficiency Options

For Commercial Refrigeration

Vince Zolli, P. Eng

VP of Engineering, KeepRite Refrigeration

Legislation in both Canada and the US, along with the demand of going Green, have resulted in new energy efficiency options available in com-mercial refrigeration. President’s Report

We finished the 2016/2017 ASHRAE Season with our best Golf Tournament ever. Thanks again to our Special Events Chair David Ras-mussen!

That also marked the end of two enthusiastic years with John Molnar’s leadership as Chapter President. Thank you John! I am very excited what the next two years have in store for the ASHRAE Hamilton Chapter. I am very thankful to be the Chapter President for this term and am

blessed with an excellent team of volunteers. We are looking for more volunteers that can join the various committees. The committee chairs are listed in the masthead on page one. Please contact them directly if you wish to volunteer. Frank Mesicek, C.E.T., PMP Hamilton Chapter President, 2016-2018

Student Membership Promotion

The Hamilton Chapter is excited to continue its initiative to promote and support students that wish to explore the opportunities ASHRAE can provide.

For the 2016/17 year, the Chapter is sponsoring students who sign up to become student mem-bers by funding their membership dues for one year. More details start on Page 6.

Golf Tournament Re-Cap

The Summer of 2016 will go down as one of the warmest, with a record number of 30C+ days. The temperature on our golf day reached 28C and actually had 4 holes where it rained. Most of you know how little rain we have had over my 27 years as Tournament Organizer. This year’s event was held at Glendale Golf & Country Club in Hamilton, a first ever for our Chapter. We had a Scramble Format and this year’s winning 4some of Michael Harris, J.S. Rancourt, Adam Oatman and Josh Cox fin-ished at 11 under Par. Christine Kemp won the Ladies Longest Drive and Glenn Kilmer won the Men’s. Surprisingly Christine is a member of the Ottawa Valley Chapter and Glenn is a member in Toronto. New this year, 2 Ladies from the Investors Group set up on Hole #4. Nobody got a Hole in One, however the ladies drew a name for a Custom built Putter which was won by Jim Hick-ey. The 2017 Golf Tournament location has yet to be determined. I will give lots of notice of the date once finalized. David Rasmussen, C.E.T. Social Chairman

ASHRAE News

Ninety-five percent of the buildings in Greens-burg, Kansas were destroyed in tornadoes in

May 2007. Now, 100% of the electricity used in the city is generated by the Greensburg Wind Farm. The installation produces 12.5 MW of

electricity—enough to power every house, busi-ness and government building in the town of

around 800 people.

ASHRAE Membership Grows In 2016, ASHRAE reached 56,105 members, its highest membership in 14 years. ASHRAE currently has 181 chapters, 41 sec-tions and 234 student branches around the globe, with members in 130 countries. Seventy-nine percent of ASHRAE's total membership is based in the U.S. and Canada, while 21% is from other countries, an increase from 18% from two years ago. "This growth reflects ASHRAE's influence on building standards and best practices around the world," said ASHRAE president Tim Wentz, P.E., HBDP. "Our members recognize that the Society increasingly provides opportunities to network with the global built environment's best and brightest."

New Distinguished Lecturers ASHRAE has named nine new Distinguished Lecturers. The Distinguished Lecturer pro-gram provides Society chapters with noted au-thorities who speak on relevant topics that im-pact the built environment industry. Since it be-gan in began in Society Year 1996–97, more than 2,000 lectures have been given. The total 70 lecturers for the 2016–17 Society year repre-sent 12 countries. The lecturers are available to present on 395 topics and speak a combined 11 languages.

Updated ASHRAE Standards ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2016 Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality

Whereas changes to the 2013 edition of the standard primarily focused on usability and clar-

ity, the 2016 edition includes a major change to the scope of the standard by which residential occupancies are moved from Standard 62.1 to

Standard 62.2.

Standard 135-2016, BACnet-A Data Commu-nication Protocol for Building Automation

and Control Networks The ASHRAE BACnet Standard includes 30 ad-

denda and more than 400 new pages to meet the growing list of included building types and

systems. Standard 90.4-2016 -- Energy Standard for

Data Centers (ANSI Approved) A newly published energy standard for data

centers features a performance based ap-proach that is more flexible and accommodating

of innovative changes that rapidly occur in de-sign, construction, and operations in that indus-

try.

ASNI/ASHRAE Standard 90.4-2016, Energy Standard for Data Centers, establishes the mini-mum energy efficiency requirements of data

centers for design and construction, operation and maintenance, and for utilization of renewa-

ble energy resources.
