White Shrimp Farming and Bio-floc Systems Course Overview “White Shrimp Farming and Bio-floc Systems” is a 2- weeks long training course, which has been designed to address the lack of know-how and meet the requirements in the region that have been identified through AAN and AIT networks and several other means. The course will deliver the state of the art of farming practices, existing management options, best practices and new innovations like bio-floc systems in white shrimp farming. The course content, which includes several technical sessions but grouped into 2 modules, is stated below: Module 1: White Shrimp Farming (6 Days) Water Quality Management Shrimp Health Management Shrimp Nutrition and Feed Management Pond Bottom/Soil Management and Probiotics Profitability and Financial Analysis Module 2: Bio-floc Systems in White Shrimp Farming (4 Days) Designing of the bio-floc system Microbial community management Recycling of waste within the system Management of feeding, aeration and stocking densities in the system Each of the modules will be accompanied with field trips to respective farms, research stations and laboratories of academic institutes. Module 1 will have 4 days of technical sessions followed by 2 days of field trips. Module 2 will be for 4 days long, where 1 day will be spent in the field. The course will be taught by internationally renowned experts, trainers, Thai faculty members and practitioners. Course Content Higher profit potential and production reliability through avoidance of diseases have basically pushed the rapid move from black tiger shrimp (P. monodon) farming to white shrimp (P. vannamei) farming in many southeast and south Asian countries. Since its introduction in 2001, Thailand has not only observed a revolution in white shrimp farming but also introduced or innovated many new technologies and adapted best management practices. While higher profitability and production reliability have been increased significantly, the social benefits and environmental protection of this boom must also be secured. While many countries are entering into this new venture or domesticating this new species or shifting from black tiger shrimp to white shrimp, there is not only the lack of know-how but also existing concerns of potential failures. Therefore, the need for introducing basic know- how and sharing the lessons learned are deemed very much necessity in the region. farming practices, existing management options, best practices and new innovations like bio-floc systems in

white shrimp farming. The course content, which includes several technical sessions but grouped into 2

modules, is stated below:

• Water Quality Management • Shrimp Health Management • Shrimp Nutrition and Feed Management • Pond Bottom/Soil Management and Probiotics • Profitability and Financial Analysis

Module 2: Bio-floc Systems in White Shrimp Farming (4 Days)

• Designing of the bio-floc system • Microbial community management • Recycling of waste within the system • Management of feeding, aeration and stocking

densities in the system

Each of the modules will be accompanied with field trips to respective farms, research stations and laboratories of

academic institutes. Module 1 will have 4 days of technical sessions followed by 2 days of field trips.

Module 2 will be for 4 days long, where 1 day will be spent in the field.

The course will be taught by internationally renowned experts, trainers, Thai faculty members and

Course Content Higher profit potential and production reliability through avoidance of diseases have basically pushed

the rapid move from black tiger shrimp (P. monodon) farming to white shrimp (P. vannamei)

farming in many southeast and south Asian countries. Since its introduction in 2001, Thailand

has not only observed a revolution in white shrimp farming but also introduced or innovated many new

technologies and adapted best management practices. While higher profitability and production

reliability have been increased significantly, the social benefits and environmental protection of this

boom must also be secured.

While many countries are entering into this new

venture or domesticating this new species or shifting from black tiger shrimp to white shrimp, there is not
