I strongly believe that educators have one of the most re-
warding jobs on the planet. They are committed to help-
ing the people they teach achieve success. For educators,
its not just about the business of education its about
inspiring and motivating their students to make their lives
more fulfilling and the world a better,
more fulfilling place to live.
So I asked our program chairs for their
thoughts on what motivates them. Here
is what they said
Shayan Mirabi - Chair, School of
Information Technology / Chair, Gen-
eral Education What Motivates Me?
I am motivated when engaged in identi-
fying a few key actions I can take to get
our students and faculty motivated. It
excites me to see that light of under-
standing in a students eye that says
Ive got it!
Nicole Bent Jones Visual Communi-
cations Chair - What Motivates Me?
I am motivated by colleagues and stu-
dents who are courageous enough to try and reach their
full potential!
Dr. Dayton Hall Criminal Justice Chair - What moti-
vates me? .
I am motivated when I see students who have doubted
their ability to do college-level work suddenly realize that
they are capable of doing the work and are energized by
the experience. It is fascinating to see the change in their
confidence and the excitement of learning something thatthey are interested in.
Dr. Kolawole Sonaike Business Chair What Moti-
vates Me? ..
Supervisors confidence in my abilities plus a trusting and
equitable work environment motivate me on the job.
And to round out this theme, Ive included a few motiva-
tional quotes produced by notable figures from both the
past and present
If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more,
do more and become more, you are a leader. -- John
Quincy Adams (American 6th US Presi-
dent (1825-29), eldest son of John Ad-
ams, 2nd US president. 1767-1848)
How soon 'not now' becomes 'never'.
-- Martin Luther (German Priest and
Scholar, instigator of the Protestant
Reformation. 1483-1546)
Dream as if you'll live forever, live asif you'll die today. -- James Dean
(American motion picture actor, 1931-
1955)
I do not try to dance better than any-
one else. I only try to dance better than
myself. -- Mikhail Baryshnikov
(Russian dancer, choreographer, and
actor, b. 1948)
Really great people make you feel that you, too, can be-
come great. --Mark Twain (American Humorist, Writer
and Lecturer. 1835-1910)
Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage
to continue that counts. -- Winston Churchill (British
Orator, Author and Prime Minister during World War II.1874-1965)
People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing-
that's why we recommend it daily. --Zig Ziglar (American Motivational
Speaker and Author.)

Making art can be a way of simplifying complex thoughts and scien-
tific findings imbedded in humanity's narrative. I have chosen to
achieve this goal with painting and printmaking techniques.
Among the many talented adjuncts teaching at AIU-Houston is Kristina Jantz. She hasthe rare ability to bridge the divide between science and art. This is nicely illustrated in
her book Artistic Rendition and the Scientific Method of Understanding Pathogens,
produced as a project toward her degree of Master of Arts, University of Houston-Clear
Lake, 2011.
Professor Jantz brings this ability to bear at AIU-Houston. During the five years she has
been with AIU-Houston, she has taught courses in biology and art appreciation, culture
studies, and environmental science.
One of the remarkable paintings reproduced in her book appears above.

The Spotlight falls this month on a high energy member of the AIU Houston Business Advi-
sory Board. She is management consultant, scholar, corporate leader and active community
volunteer Ms. Princess Mokolo. She is the longest serving member of our Advisory Board and
continues to be an energizing influence, constantly encouraging greater engagement of ourstudents with the professional community.
Princess Mokolo is the founder and president of Lucinma Women Development Center, La-
gos, Nigeria (http://lucinmanetwork.org/), a non-profit organization providing affordable voca-
tional training and career education for indigent women. Opening in 2004, the center has
trained over 250 women to promote their employability. Prior to Lucinma, Ms. Mokolo served
as the managing director of PROMPT Enterprises, LTD, Lagos, Nigeria, an industry leader
in Nigerian print services.
Ms. Mokolo holds a MBA from AIU-Houston, and a BS in computer science from the Univer-
sity of Benin. She anticipates completing her doctorate degree in 2013. Additionally, she
holds various HR certifications. Besides serving as an AIU-Houston Business Advisory Board
Member, Ms. Mokolo volunteers with SCORE, Methodist Hospital, St. Thomas Moore, and
Skills for Life.
Ms. Mokolo would like to expand her role and those of the other business advisory board
members to become more directly interactive with AIU-Houstons MBA students. She sug-
gests that the graduate curriculum place more emphasis upon real life projects, coaching, de-
cision making, and listening skills to challenge students to achieve higher levels of creativity.
She suggests higher engagement between Advisory Board Members and our students
through local mentoring projects and recommends a program of international professional
development where AIU faculty could deliver critically needed continuing education opportu-
nities and business development seminars to Nigerian business leaders. Ms. Mokolo has
renewed her commitment to our Business Advisory Board and is looking forward to a year ofchange, where the role of the Board Member shifts from passive to active engagement.
To students at AIU Ms. Mokolo offers the following advice: Be more open to your curiosity
regarding outcomes. Become more flexible and visionary. Create your own environment. She
urges students to seek multiple paths for making a contribution. We can all learn from her
example and gain from her advice.

The business seminar series is a quarterly event by the Business Department usually done dur-
ing the fourth or eighth week of the quarter. The primary purpose is to promote student reten-
tion and academic solidification. The seminar is open to all members of the University communi-
ty. Whenever possible, Admissions uses the seminars as an opportunity for enrolled students
who have not yet started class to become more familiar with what the Business Department hasto offer them.
The title of this quarters seminar was "Resolving Conflicts in Business."
Dr. Leland Taylor, a full time faculty member in the Business Department, delivered the semi-
nar. He asserted that periodic conflicts are inevitable in any human relationship, including
those in the workplace. The concern is not the conflict itself, but rather how we go about resolv-
ing the issue. Citing the work of authorities in the field, Dr. Taylor opined that not all conflicts
require a lot of attention from the manager. Some are better left alone. It is important, howev-
er, that managers fully understand what is going on around them.
According to Dr. Taylor, in general terms, managers have been known to use the following ap-
proaches to conflict resolution: Avoidance, Accommodation, Competition, Compromise, and Col-
laboration. Managers and supervisors must communicate effectively with their subordinates in
order to detect conflict situations on the job and take appropriate actions to resolve the dispute.

Sixty-two AIU-Houston students attended the AIU Online Serious Talk Webinar titled
The Value of a Business Degree in Today's Challenging Economy. The discussion went
very well and Dr. Greg Washington, AIUs Provost & VP for Campus Operations, did a
good job of moderating the event. Students were impressed with the high level of atten-
tion the University is giving to the quality of their educational experience and their fu-
ture. The event, while focused on business degrees, was still informational for students
of all programs.
The Webinar was held on February 7, 2013, 6:00 pm CST.
Participants included:
AIU Undergraduate and Graduate Alumni, representing various companies.
Kristy McArthur, Career Services Manager at AIU
Eric Hellige, CareerBuilder Career Advisor
Participants noted that despite some signs of recovery, the economy is still beset by high
unemployment and a great deal of under-employment. With advancement opportunities
harder to come by, a Business Degreewhether at the Bachelors or Masters levelcanbe both powerful and practical, even for those already gainfully employed. AIU alumni
and leading employers stressed that even individuals with college degrees and good jobs
can improve their career forecast, despite the headwinds in the current economic cli-
mate.
