Mission Statement

• AJP Lung is dedicated to publishing and disseminating high-quality original and review articles on all aspects of lung research. We welcome articles that highlight new mechanisms of pulmonary diseases and that offer insights into new treatments.

• We believe that all manuscripts are worthy of a review. We strive to provide reviews that are vigorous but helpful to and improve the quality and impact of each submitted article. Although we are interested in complete stories we remain reasonable as to the number of experiments needed to publish a paper. Our acceptance rate for research articles is about 50%.

• We recognize the efforts of junior authors by awarding annually five $500 awards for the most Outstanding Paper by a Junior Investigator; two of them to graduate students and three to post-doctoral fellows, instructors or Assistant Profs. ( http://ajplung.physiology.org/)

• We aim to increase the impact of our published papers by issuing calls for papers in exciting new areas for research with translational implications http://ajplung.physiology.org/ and by sponsoring and organizing symposia in national meetings

• Evaluated the performance of all editorial board members- replaced 35 senior members (who did not have time to review manuscripts) with ten mid-career scientists. Newly appointed editorial board members pledged to review at least 50% of assigned manuscripts on time and publish one article per year in AJP-Lung.

• Appointed five leading scientists as Consulting Editors with the responsibility

of evaluating the performance of the journal and providing input of how to better serve the pulmonary community and increase its impact on the field.

• Appointed two new Associate Editors: Drs. Wolfgang Kuebler and Dolly Mehta. Dr. Lorraine Ware resigned as Senior Associate Editor as of 1/1/2014. We thank her for her dedicated service to the journal. She was replaced as Deputy Editor by Dr. Prakash YS, who has been an Associate Member for two years

Major Challenges for 2014 • Increase our impact factor; our current impact factor is

similar to other APS journals and not significantly different from respiratory journals publishing basic and translational research articles

• Increase # submissions of high quality manuscripts; so far in

2014 number of submissions were similar to those in 2013. We have solicited high impact reviews from leaders in the field which will help us attract original article. Members of our Editorial Board are expected to contribute one article per year to AJP-Lung
