Jaguar News ! By Alan Talbott, President
The 2011, next generation XJ sedan will be
officially unveiled July 9th
. It will have an XF-
ish front end with a “sloping greenhouse”
posture that is a long way from the current
upright version. Code named X351 the new car
will have direct injection V-8’s (which we test
drove at the Atlanta Motor Speedway last
month) with horsepower ratings starting at 380.
The all aluminum chassis will continue giving it
the qualities to lead the class in terms of rigidity,
lightness and strength. Spy photos seen recently
indicate it will also be offered in the long
wheelbase version as well. The most electric
news, however about the new sedan is that it will
indeed be electrified. Jaguar will offer a plug in
version of its new sedan within a year of the
debut in 2011. It will offer a pure-electric range
of 30 miles supported by a small gas generator
for longer trips. It is estimated that the average
American driver travels less than 25 miles per
day so given that stat the 30 mile range would be
adequate. They must never have been to Atlanta!
(Click on the following link for a teaser!)
2011 Jaguar
I didn’t realize it but Jaguar and Land Rover
have not been sold in India. Even though Tata
has owned them for a year they announced just
days ago that they will begin selling in the
country with the first dealer opening in June.
This alone should be a shot in the arm to sales
and therefore production in the UK. No surprise
that Tata will be the official importer as well.
We had two excellent events this month with
the King Tut exhibit April 25th
being the first and perhaps the best. Although tickets were pricy the
pieces on display were astounding and worth the
fee. Having discovered the Tut tomb intact in
the nearly 1900’s made it possible to view, 70
years later, much of the life lead by the Pharaohs
with opulence to the max. We viewed a
sarcophagus for a cat that was solid stone with
solid stone cover and chiseled writings all over.
Must have taken six months to do and that cat
must have smelled bad. We viewed a jaguar
head mold with precious stones for eyes made
out solid gold. What a great grill badge for a
wagon back then. Saw a belt buckle made out of
thousands of pieces of small cylindrical stones in
about a 3” by 4” size. That must have weighed
three pounds. Don’t know how they carried all
that around. I sure others in our group could
speak more eloquently on the exhibit pieces but
those stuck out for me. After the exhibit we
attended a very well made movie on the
pyramids and tombs giving great insight into
people that lived thousands of years ago. Great
show!
After the exhibit our group had lunch at
O’Terrill’s Sports Bar just up from the Civic
Center. Lew George kindly had the restaurant
open early for us again this year. We had good
food and good conversation and a lot of laughs.
A most enjoyable day! Thanks to Kim Daly and
Lew for making the arrangements.
Our second event was the Walter Mitty
Races at Road Atlanta this past weekend. Jaguar
was the featured marque and they showed up in
force. There were some stunning cars from all
over the east Coast and beyond. You can see
some photos elsewhere in the newsletter and
perhaps get an idea of the quality on display. I
would guess 60 to 70 Jaguars turned out not
including the vintage racecars of course. Several
of our members got there early to get their
parade laps and all had smiles as they pulled
back into our area to park. Lunch together,
looking at Jaguars, watching some racing-it was
just fun. And the weather cooperated too!
British Car Day at Berry College is coming
up on May 16th
so you don’t want to miss that
laid back day of English iron nostalgia. There
will be approximately 400 to 500 British cars
there of all makes and models. If you fancy the
Brit’s cars this is as good as it gets. Bring your
lunch with some extra for others and we’ll all
share the food, drink, cars and laughs. Look
forward to seeing every there.
FYI we have no monthly meeting in May due
to the proximity to Memorial Day. We’ll resume
the meetings the last Monday in June as usual.
Also, please bear in mind that this is the last
newsletter we will print. All newsletters
effective in June will be via email. If you do not
have email let Judy Scarborough know and for
those few we will copy and mail. Your
indulgence is appreciated as it saves the club
roughly $1,000 and we are not limited in paper
space for photo’s or articles. We can expand the
newsletter as we need to now. Also, if you wish
to write something for the newsletter I urge you
do so. We would welcome your perspective on
the marque, the club and your personal
experiences with your Jag.
Speaking of meetings we had a great time at
the last meeting. We had a packed house of over
forty people to hear AJS member Ken
Sturdyvant discuss the merits of fishing. A very
professional job of speaking with lots of
enthusiasm entertained us well after dinner.
Ken is a new member and new to Jaguar just
having made his XK purchase and we thank him
so much for a great job. Speaking of a great job,
our first speaker that kicked off the member
speaker theme we have going was Larry Walton
at the March meeting. Larry’s overall view of
this car racing exploits in the 80’s and 90’s was
also very well done. He had the racers essentials
on display with stories about each item and
stories of the fun he had competing at various
tracks. Both speakers -well done and thanks for
making the meetings more enjoyable.
PLEASE NOTE, NO MEETING IN MAY!!
Next monthly meeting June 29th

By June Mindrup, Health & Hospitality Director
Fran McNair and daughter, Sherri (Denver,
Colorado) will be joining a group of AT & T
Pioneer Volunteers embarking on a cruise tour
called "The Roman Empire". They will fly to
Rome, spend 2 days there and then sail to
Dubrovnik, Croatia, Kerkira, Corfu, Santorini,
Kysadasi (Ephesus) Turkey, Piraeus, Greece,
Messina and Sicily, Italy; then back to
Civitavecchia, Italy before returning home.
Glen and Kathy Michalski are leaving for
their Beach House in Gulf Shores, Alabama for
two weeks. This trip, we think, is the celebration
for a good Doctor report.
Erlinda McCabe has returned from her
marvelous 5-week trip visiting family in the
Philippines. She said "Everything was great
except the 18-hour return flight which was a
"killer".
In the Spring, Barry and Janet Morgan went
to Charleston, South Carolina for a pleasant
Spring get-away; however, their big trip is just
around the corner when they will be leaving on a
14-day trip to Eastern Europe. Plans are to rent a
car and drive to Poland, Vienna, Prague, Bratislava, Budapest and Krakow. They quickly
added, our plans all hinge on avoiding the Swine
Flu bug. Please stay healthy so this dream trip
will materialize.
Dabney Talbott had laser surgery on her eye
(which was no picnic), but she came through
with flying colors. Know you're glad to have
that in the past tense.
The speaker at our April meeting was Ken
Sturdivant, a native Georgian, who shared his
knowledge about fishing. Ken has been fishing
the lakes and streams of the South for 60 years
and his "On the Water" fishing schools are the
only full time schools east of the Mississippi
River. Check out www.havefunfishing.com on
the computer. A most entertaining and
informative program which all enjoyed.
Lew George attended the Florida Pan Handle
British Car Association's annual British Car
Show in Pensacola and entered his l988 Rolls
Royce Silver Spur. He came home with an
award of "Second in class"! Whoopee and
congratulations! Oh what fun to report winners!!
Kim and Bob Daly recently returned from a
driving trip through North and South Carolina.
They visited family and friends...not to forget to
mention enjoying the beautiful spring bursting
forth in the mountains.
Good news from Norma Reichert is that she
has completed the Chemo sessions and will now
be embarking on radiation. We're all pulling for
you!
Joel and Maryanne Blackford will be leaving
soon for a 2 ½ month trip going across America.
They will be journeying in a camper/trailer all
the way to the Pacific Ocean and then up to
Canada. Along the way they will be kayaking,
hiking, biking and camping. Travel safely and
have a super great time.
Wayne and Malinda Harris' youngest
grandson, Baker Lee Benton, spent a weekend
here visiting. A trip to the Zoo, the Aquarium
and IKEA in addition to a little spoiling kept
them all busy.
The weekend of April 17th, Wayne Harris
participated in the U.S.A. Racquetball
Association Regional Singles Championships at
Recreation Atlanta and finished in Second Place
in Men's 55-C. Over the Memorial Day
weekend, Wayne will be in Houston, Texas for
the USAR National Singles Championships. Be
sure to win - and let us know!
A lovely thank you card was received from
Beverly Hicks acknowledging the fruit basket
AJS'ers sent her when she was recuperating from
her heart attack and subsequent surgery. She is
recovering nicely and so appreciated the club
remembering her.
Just two days after attending AJS meeting,
Kathy Michalski had a stress test followed by a
cauterization which revealed she had to have a
stent put into a main artery that was 90%
blocked. She was very lucky not to have had a
major heart attack. Good news is she was
discharged from hospital and has Doctor's
approval for them to go ahead with plans to go to
their Beach House. Kathy gal...do take it easy
and remember there are lots of AJS'ers out their
pulling for you.
Another handwritten note was received from
the Ann and Dave Ulmer family expressing
appreciation for the contribution the club made
to Stephen's son's scholarship fund. Stephen
Ulmer passed away suddenly and will be missed
by many.
Remember...No AJS Meeting In May!!
Activities Kim Daly, Activities Director
Looking for something to do with like-
minded British car enthusiasts? How about
joining AJS members in our next activity by
participating in the 26th
Atlanta British Motorcar
Day on Saturday May 16th
at the very beautiful
Berry College in Rome, GA. This is always a
well attended event with about 500 of all types
of British cars on display for all to enjoy. This
event is held rain or shine. Registration opens at
9:00 and remains open until 12 noon. All the
jaguars will be grouped together making it easy
to find fellow members. We ask you to bring a
picnic or covered dish item to share with other
members of AJS. Don’t forget your plates,
utensils and drinks for the day. You can find
more detailed information, including directions,
about this event at:
www.atlantabritishmotorcarday.com
If you have not preregistered by May 10th
, the
cost will be $25.00 per car payable in advance or
on the day of the show. Hoping to see you at
Berry College on the 16th
!
Sunday, June 7th
is the day for taking a late
spring drive up to Dahlonega. We will meet at
9:45 AM sharp at the Marriott parking lot at
Windward Pkwy and GA 400. Exit GA 400 at
Windward and go east, go to the first light and
turn left and take an immediate left into the
parking lot. We will then drive north toward
Dahlonega ending at the beautiful Montaluce
Winery and Estates, where we will have a winery
tour and enjoy a delicious lunch/brunch. The
25,000 sq ft winery building looking and feeling
much like a Tuscan villa houses the restaurant,
Le Vigne, overlooking the vineyard. The cost of
the lunch will be in the $12-$18 range plus
beverages and gratuity. After or during lunch,
there will be an opportunity for wine tasting as
well as a visit to a model home of a Tuscan villa.
You will also be able to tour the Montaluce and
Solidarity School Raffle Home. This house will
be raffled off this summer giving some lucky
person a Tuscan style villa valued at $595,000
plus $100,000 in cash. Tickets cost $50.00 each
and benefit the Solidarity school. For more
information on the raffle visit www.solidarityschool.org
We will finish our visit to Montaluce at about
2:30 PM. We will then take an hour drive
through the back roads around Dahlonega ending
at the Dawsonville outlet mall where some of us
may want to spend a little time shopping or we
can split up and head for home. For those not
wanting to go on the drive after lunch, directions
will be available for the return trip home or to
the charming downtown of Dahlonega for
leisurely strolling or shopping.
If you would like to join us on June 7th, I
need to hear from you no later than June 2nd
in
order to complete our reservation at Le Vigne.
Please call me (Kim) at (H)770-410-5717 or
(C)770-633-4960 or email me at
We have received a kind invitation from the
North Georgia Jaguar Club inviting us to their
annual picnic and car show. We will not be
participating in the car show, but will surely
enjoy looking at and admiring their cars. The
Alpha Romeo Owners Club has also been invited
to the picnic. This event will be held from
10:00am until 3:00pm on Saturday, June 20th
at
the Roswell Area Park, 10495 Woodstock Road
Roswell, GA 30075.
Lunch will be catered by SmokeJack of
Alpharetta (Yummy!) at a cost of $8.00
including tax and tip. You have the choice of
barbecue pork or chicken sandwich, a side dish
(Cole slaw, potato salad or chips) and a drink
(iced tea or water). Cookies will be on sale for a
dollar.
Lunch will be served at about 11:30am. The
food must be ordered in advance, so I must have
your order no later than June 12th
. Please fill out
the enclosed form, enclose a check to AJS and
send it to me so I’ll have it by June 12th
. If you
choose to bring your own food, you may do so.
The NGJC has reserved pavilions in advance,
so there will be no rain date. The pavilions are
covered, so they want us to come and have a
good time rain or shine. Let’s have a good
turnout and enjoy NGJC’s hospitality!
