Rick Nagano is a graduate student in the history department at USC, struggling to make rent on his South Los Angeles apartment near the neighborhood where his family once lived. When he lands a job as a research assistant for the elderly Mrs. W—, the heir to an oil fortune, he sees it at first simply as a source of extra cash. But as he grows closer to the iconoclastic, charming, and feisty Mrs. W—, he gets drawn into a world of privilege and wealth far different from his racially mixed, blue-collar beginnings.

Putting aside his half-finished dissertation, Rick sets up office in Mrs. W—’s grand Bel Air mansion and begins to transcribe her journals—which document an old Los Angeles not described in his history books. He also accompanies Mrs. W— to venues frequented by the descendants of the land and oil bar-ons who built the city. One evening, at an event, he meets Fiona Morgan—the elegant scion of an old steel family—who takes an interest in his studies. Irresistibly drawn to Fiona, he agrees to help her with a project of questionable merit in the hopes he’ll win her favor.

A Student of History explores both the beginnings of Los Angeles and the pres-ent-day dynamics of race and class. It offers a window into the usually hidden world of high society, and the influence of historic families on current events. Like Great Expectations and The Great Gatsby, it features, in Rick Nagano, a young man of modest means who is navigating a world where he doesn’t belong.

NINA REVOYR is the author of five previous novels, including The Age of Dreaming, which was nominated for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize; Southland, a Los An-geles Times best seller and “Best Book” of 2003; and Wingshooters, which won an Indie Booksellers’ Choice Award and was selected by O, The Oprah Magazine as one of “10 Titles to Pick Up Now.” Revoyr lives and works in Los Angeles

Fameby Justine Bateman

A passionate and critical analysis of the life cycle of Fame, from worldwide TV star and film producer/director Justine Bateman.

BOOK DETAILS: 2 Oct. 2018; 220 pgs. w/24 color photos; nonfiction

HIGHLIGHTS: Bateman has been nominated for 2 Emmys & a Golden Globe; at its height in the 1980s, Family Ties was watched by approximately 62 million people in the US

PRAISE FOR FAME: “Justine Bateman was famous before selfies replaced autographs, and bags of fan mail gave way to Twitter shitstorms. And here’s the good news: she took notes along the way. Justine steps through the looking glass of her own celebrity, shatters it, and pieces together, beyond the shards and splinters, a reflection of her true self. The transformation is breathtaking. Revelatory and raucous, fascinating and frightening, Fame is a hell of a ride.” —Michael J. Fox, actor, author of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future

“If you’ve ever dreamed of being famous someday, you need to read this book. If you’ve ever called a celebrity, a ‘has-been’ or a ‘flash in the pan’ on social media, then you really need to read this book . . . Justine Bateman has crafted the most compelling and comprehensive treatise on the nature of

fame that you’re ever likely to read. —Ernest Cline, author of Ready Player One

Entertainment shows, magazines, websites, and other channels continuously report the latest sightings, heartbreaks, and triumphs of the famous to a seemingly insatiable public. Millions of people go to enormous lengths to achieve Fame. Fame is woven into our lives in ways that may have been unimaginable in years past.

And yet, is Fame even real? Contrary to tangible realities, Fame is one of those “realities” that we, as a society, have made. Why? What is it about Fame that drives us to spend so much time, money, and focus to create the framework that maintains its health?

Mining decades of experience, writer, director, producer, and actress Justine Bateman writes a visceral, intimate look at the experience of Fame. Combining the internal reality-shift of the famous, theories on the public’s behavior at each stage of a famous person’s career, and the experiences of other famous performers, Bateman takes the reader inside and outside the emotions of Fame. The book includes twenty-four color photographs to highlight her analysis.

JUSTINE BATEMAN is a writer, producer, director, and actress with an impressive resume in entertainment that includes the eighties hit TV show Family Ties, as well as Satisfaction, Men Behaving Badly, The TV Set, Desperate Housewives, Californication, and many more. Her work has earned her two Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe nomination. Her writing has been published by DAME, Salon, and McSweeney’s.

PRAISE FOR BELLOTTO: “Bellotto is one hell of a writer. With an elegant and quick narrative voice, he reaches a pinnacle of excellence and originality that’s hard to find around here.” —Reinaldo Moraes, author of Pornopopéia

“Undoubtedly, if Marlowe and Harry Bosch are Los Angeles, Matt Scudder is New York and Maigret, Paris, the detective Remo Bellini is São Paulo’s most complete translation. These mysteries quickly captivate the reader.” —José Figueiredo, O Globo

An apparently simple adultery case turns into an intricate and suspense-filled plot with numerous twists and turns, and a surprising ending. Dr. Rafidjian, a renowned physician from São Paulo’s old Ar-menian community, seeks out Dora Lobo’s detective agency, where Bellini works, wishing to locate the call girl Ana Cíntia Lopes. The case soon finds its way into the hands of Remo Bellini and his new as-sistant Beatriz; but the client’s brutal murder changes the course of the investigation, landing the two detectives into numerous high-risk situations.

To confront the puzzle of several sphinxes, most of them female, private detective Remo Bellini plung-es into the underworld of São Paulo. Little by little, the mysteries unravel in a surprising fashion, until the solving of the final enigma leaves Bellini perplexed, with a bitter taste in his mouth.

Bivouaca novel by Kwame Dawes

When his father dies in suspicious circumstances, Ferron Morgan’s trauma is increased by the conflict within his family and his father’s friends over whether the death is the result

of medical negligence or a political assassination.

BOOK DETAILS: Spring-Summer 2019; 200 pages; literary fiction

COMP TITLES: A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon James; Augustown by Kei Miller

PRAISE FOR SHE’S GONE, DAWES’S DEBUT NOVEL:

“Dawes offers vibrant characters and locales in this diaspora of black culture and strong emotions, bordering the fine line between love and madness be-tween two troubled people.” —Booklist

“By turns sensual and painful, violent and tender, the novel explores love in the very real context of the human psyche, featuring two people who in the end don’t necessarily triumph over their pasts but instead realize their willing-ness to work toward overcoming the history and habits that would push them apart.” —Library Journal

“A masterly tour de force, the language here is elegant, seductive, and ten-der, the irony is sharp, the humor subverts, and hope shines through. Kwame Dawes is always reinventing the Caribbean narrative, fusing myth, legend,

reggae, and his own sense of style to create a powerful and tremendous art. He never ceases to amaze.” —Chris Abani, award-winning author of GraceLand

AWARDS: She’s Gone: Hurston/Wright Legacy Award for Best First Novel; LiveHopeLove.com: Emmy Award; and Guggenheim Fellowship for Poetry; numerous poetry awards

A sharply focused portrayal of Jamaica at a tipping point in its recent past, this story of one man’s private grief and dislocation explores the psyche of a nation and a cultural movement that has lost its footing.

When Ferron Morgan’s family is thrown in turmoil by the suspicions surrounding the mysterious death of his father, his life is swept away in a tide of guilt and filial duty.

Narrated in a nonlinear fashion with cycles of flash-back, the story suggests that the answers to the future can only be surmised once the past has been revisited.

KWAME DAWES is the author of twenty books of poetry and numerous other books of fiction, criticism, and essays. He is Glenna Luschei editor of Prairie Schooner and teaches at the University of Nebraska and the Pacific MFA Program. He is director of the African Poetry Book Fund and artistic director of the Calabash International Literary Festival.

BOOK DETAILS: 2 January 2018, 288 pages; mystery

COMP TITLES: Where All the Light Tends to Go by David Joy; Night Trem-ors by Matt Coyle; Above the Waterfall by Ron Rash; The Do-Right by Lisa Sandlin

“Family secrets, childhood memories, and old crimes influence the present in this suspenseful debut. Kate is a gutsy character, and her romance with Sam is enjoyable. “I was up all night, utterly riveted by The Devil’s Song, with its memorable characters, crisp dialogue, and meticulous plotting. It’s hard to believe this is a debut. Lauren Stahl is a writer to watch!” —Alafair Burke, best-selling author of The Ex

Kate Magda, an up-and-coming prosecutor and the privileged daughter of the politically connected President Judge Tommy Magda, has been given the assignment of a lifetime—lead prosecutor on a string of murders rocking Mission County, Pennsylvania. Kate views the assignment as her chance to not only convict a serial killer, but to make a name for herself—one other than “the judge’s daughter.” She is determined to show her boss, her family, and the public that she is more than her father’s shadow.

As Kate delves into the case, she becomes convinced that she shares a personal link with the kill-er, who seems to know intimate details about a tragic childhood event Kate suffered—an event she thought she’d left in the past. It’s the way the victims are being posed—naked and dumped in open graves. Paranoia sets in, the night terrors return, and Kate has an imminent sense that she’s the killer’s next victim. Kate no longer feels assigned to the case . . . she is the case, and solving it is her only chance for survival.

LAUREN STAHL began her legal career as an assistant district attorney, prosecut-ing felonies with a focus on SVU crimes. She is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University’s Dickinson School of Law and received her MFA from Wilkes University. Stahl resides in northeastern Pennsylvania with her husband, two children, and giant but sweet mastiff, Myra Ellen.

PRAISE FOR LIPEZ/ZINNER/WAKEFIELD’S PREVIOUS COLLABO-RATION, PLEASE TAKE ME OFF THE GUEST LIST:

“For those who’ve never had the opportunity to party like a rock star and felt like they were missing out, Please Take Me Off the Guest List may very well smooth over those regrets.” —The New York Times, T Magazine

When Sam, a bartender in New York, hears that his ex, Vicki, his one true love, has quit AA and is out drinking again, he embarks on a quest to find her. Sam and his sidekick Francis trek from dive bars to

gay bars to rocker bars—encountering skinheads, party promoters, underage drug dealers, and dominatrixes—but it seems they are always one step behind Vicki, almost as if 131 different things are keeping the lovers apart. Before the night is over, Sam will

have to wrestle with what he is really looking for.

Zachary Lipez, known for his essays and music writing, brings his pithy, multilayered, and self-deprecating voice to fiction with this first novella. Nick Zinner’s photographs heighten the intimacy with his sensitive and sympathetic eye. Stacy Wakefield, editor and art director, ties the book together in all its layers and ragged complication.

COMP TITLES: .

HIGHLIGHTS: Imprint curator, Ann Hood, will be very involved in promotion. ADVANCE PRAISE: “Now You See the Sky is singular, as wise and beautiful and elegiac as it is specific and in-the-moment . . . There are images in here, gestures of love, and its hard conversations, that a reader will remember forever.” —Rick Bass, author of For a Little While

“I thank and applaud Catharine H. Murray for the openness, honesty, and beauty with which she tells this ungilded story of a mother’s love for a dying child. An essential recommendation for those living with loss.” —Suzanne Strempek Shea, author of This Is Paradise: An Irish Mother’s Grief, an

African Village’s Plight, and the Medical Clinic That Brought Fresh Hope to Both

Now You See the Sky is a coming-of-age memoir about love, marriage, motherhood, illness, and death. After college, Catharine H. Murray travels to a small town on the banks of the Mekong River in Thailand to work in a refugee camp and learn about life. There she gradually outgrows the shell of her American worldview, as her interior world begins to attune to this new one that moves with a slower rhythm and deeper calm than she ever imagined. Within a year, she falls in love with a local man and, two years later, marries him. Together, they have three sons.

When their middle son is diagnosed with cancer at age five, the family moves from rural Thailand, to Seattle, to Bangkok, before they settle on a remote mountaintop to battle the disease as the child slips into a decline. Full of wisdom and honesty, Now You See the Sky allows the reader to witness the fathomless loss of a beloved child and learn how tragedy can transform us, expand our vision, and make us more fully alive.

CATHARINE H. MURRAY lives with her two sons in Portland, Maine, where she teaches English to refugees. She has read or led workshops on grief writing at Harvard University, Maine Medical Center, Maine State Prison, University of New England, and the Hayes Library in Bangkok.

Now You See the Sky is the debut selection of Ann Hood’s new nonfiction imprint with Akashic, GRACIE BELLE. Modeled after her experience writing the best-selling memoir Comfort: A Journey Through Grief, and named after her daughter, Grace, Hood’s imprint reaffirms for authors and readers that none of us are alone in our journeys.

Aster has little to offer folks in the way of rebuttal when they call her ogre and freak. She’s used to the names; she only wishes there was more truth to them. If she were truly a monster, she’d be powerful enough to tear down the walls around her until nothing remains of her world.

Aster lives in the lowdeck slums of the HSS Matilda, a space vessel organized much like the antebellum South. For generations, the Matilda has ferried the last of humanity to a mythical Promised Land. On its way, the ship’s leaders have imposed harsh moral re-strictions and deep indignities on dark-skinned sharecroppers like Aster. Embroiled in a grudge with a brutal overseer, Aster learns there may be a way to improve her lot—if she’s willing to sow the seeds of civil war.

But when the Tsikatas’ idyllic lifestyle takes a turn for the worse, Abebe’s father, following his mother’s advice, places her in a religious shrine, hoping that the sacrifice of his daughter will serve as religious atonement for the crimes of his ancestors. Unspeakable acts befall Abebe for the fifteen years she is enslaved within the shrine. Revolutionary Threads: Rastafari, Social Justice, and Cooperative Economicsby Bobby SullivanBOOK DETAILS: 4 December 2018, 228 pages; political science

Revolutionary Threads offers an American Rasta’s retelling of episodes in American history with an anticolo-nial thrust, accented by Bobby Sullivan’s own personal experiences. The book ties together various subjects while returning each time to the culture of Rastafari, social justice movements, and cooperative economics . . . Sullivan aims to dispel the oversimplification of our perceptions of Rastafari, and other cultures, in the age of the Internet, where the loudest voices are often the most extreme and divisive . . . All in all, the book hopes to serve as a unifying agent for our all-too-connected global village, and for the resistance to the en-suing consolidation of global capital and all its excesses.

BOBBY SULLIVAN grew up in the Washington, DC punk scene, fueled by Rasta rockers Bad Brains and the foundational Minor Threat. His most notable band continues to be Soulside (of which he is the singer), which had multiple releases on Dischord Re-cords, produced by Ian MacKaye. Along the way, Sullivan became an activist, working with Food Not Bombs, the Anarchist Black Cross political prisoner support network, and a Rasta prison ministry.

Launched in 2004 with Brooklyn Noir, the award-winning Akashic Noir Series features original noir anthologies with each volume comprised of all new stories, each one set in a distinct neighborhood or location within the respective city or locale. The series includes best-selling authors like Dennis Lehane, Michael Connelly, and Joyce Carol Oates, as well as new, rising stars. With over 70 titles now available, many of our international partners are finding success by publishing volumes local to their publishing house alongside a selection of existing titles. Recently added titles include Amsterdam Noir, Hong Kong Noir, Berlin Noir, and Sydney Noir.
