Community

Welcome to the 2014 Al Khor Community Yearbook.Inside you will find helpful information for you to utilize all the great facilities and services that AKC has to offer. From joining classes and events at the clubs, to sampling our range of delicious food at our restaurants, from enjoying our green gardens and parklands, to appreciating the safety and security of our community lifestyle… we really do “Experience Life Differently” in AKC.

2013 was another great year in Al Khor Community. One of the achievements that I am most proud of is the reduction in our safety incidents, particularly traffic accidents. After introducing a reverse parking policy in 2013, we have seen the number of accidents drop by 50%. This is a great accomplishment by our residents and goes to show what we can achieve when we

commit to safety, and care about looking after each other.

We are coming up to a period of growth for the Community and we are busy

constructing new homes and facilities for our new residents. I thank you for your patience and

courtesy during this expansion process. As with any construction site there are risks and changes

that we have to be aware of, so please make your family’s safety your top priority.

Along with this growth, we will see the “end of an era” when the lease to our Beach Club expires and we say goodbye to this facility. Whilst this is a sad time for many of us who enjoyed the Beach Club regularly, rest assured that we are investigating other alternatives as replacements – including an Environmental Water Park right here in the Community.

To get the latest information on these changes I strongly recommend that you frequently check our website: www.akcommunity.org and “like” our Facebook page. Don’t forget sign up for our weekly e-newsletter to get the latest news and event information sent straight to your email inbox.

All the best for 2014!

It is with great pleasure to welcome all new arrivals as well as all other residents to this year’s edition of the Al Khor Community Yearbook and hope you enjoy it’s updated content? As Head of Clubs, Recreation and Community PR, me and my team try our best on a daily basis to ensure that our residents receive high quality services and products from the Clubs. The Al Khor Community is a multicultural environment, providing you a wide array of events, activities and classes throughout the year, and also encourage everyone to actively participate in, whether actively or passively. Our top notch Social and Recreational Facilities and also our array of International Cuisines is intended to serve almost 11,500 residents from 50 different countries, which add to the success in making us one of the biggest and best managed housing facilities in the State of Qatar.

It is reassuring to know that our community displays outstanding team work and a secure and fun place for

present and future generations to grow up in. In 2013, we have displayed a balance between ‘Fun and Action’ as well as ‘Community Outreach’ through various Health, Safety and Fundraising Activities that made a tremendous educational impact on residents and also helped to receive major positive feedback from chosen organizations we supported. Together, as one big diverse family, we are aiming to set another milestone in Al Khor Community history, by making 2014 even more successful. On behalf of the Club Management team, I would like to personally thank all of you for your continued support and patronage of our well established Clubs and all other facilities and services we manage. Please feel free to give us your feedback and ideas any time allowing us to improve even further and make your stay as pleasant as possible.

Make your Weight Loss Resolution a Reality This New Year!

After relishing goodies during this festive season, everyone’s natural instinct is to promise them that they have to lose weight and get fit during the coming year. After all, losing weight is the popular New Year’s resolution. Before January even peaks many give up, however, below are some tips to help you keep to your resolution: Q1 - What is a balanced diet? When it comes to a healthy diet, ‘balance’ would mean getting it right. Nutritionists use the term “balanced” for a diet that meets ones nutritional needs. This mean, not providing too much or too little, but just the right amount to maintain proper body functions along with achieving a healthy body weight. The most important step to eating a balanced diet is to educate oneself about your body’s needs. Researchers have shown that metabolism is affected by the body’s circadian rhythm which is the biological process that the body follows over a 24-hour cycle - the time of day we eat may have a big impact on the way our bodies process food. A recent study showed that those who eat their largest daily meal at breakfast are far more likely to lose weight and reduce their waistline circumference than those who have a big late night dinner.

Q2 - Your Exercise Routine: How Much Is Enough?Regular physical activity may help you lose weight and keep it off. It also helps improve your energy levels and mood, and lower your risk for developing heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. So, keep moving every day!

Q3 – What to look for in Food labels while shopping ‘smart’?The Academy for Nutrition and Dietetics advises us to become ‘smart shoppers’ by reading food labels in order to find out which foods are good sources of fiber, calcium, iron, and vitamin C, compare similar foods to find out which one is lower in fat and calories, search for low-sodium foods and look for foods that are low in saturated and trans fats.Cut down your intake of foods that read partially hydrogenated fats or trans fats because of their harmful effects on arteries and blood lipid levels. Trans fats raise LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and lower HDL (“good”) cholesterol thereby promoting heart diseases. While it is not easy to keep up the enthusiasm for months after you would have brushed away the confetti, remember - it is not impossible. The key to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight isn’t about short-term dietary changes; rather it is about a lifestyle that includes healthy eating and regular physical activity. Seize this year - make ‘becoming fit’ a worthy resolution, and stick with it.
