have an advocate.

that had the Shop Safe sticker or poster in the window.

Jigsaw Project/ MCCH Video

Julia Limbirons gave the group an update on the work

that is happening around the Jigsaw Project.

Julia is part of the Community Bridge Builders, who

deliver disability hate crime awareness sessions and

workshops about cyber bullying, bullying, mate crime

and keeping safe. They provide support to people with learning disabilities,

autism and mental health issues. They provide victim support and encourage

people to report hate crime.

Community Bridge Builders are currently working to

open 40 reporting hubs in Medway and Kent.

Community Bridge Builders are also working alongside

schools to raise awareness of disability hate crime to

parents of people with learning disabilities and stu-

dents.

Caroline Stevens from the Jigsaw Project has been delivering training to

professionals such as the Police, bus drivers and doctors about how to sup-

port people with learning disabilities. So far, 480 people have attended the

training.

‘Experts by Experience’ are people with learning disabilities that work with

the Jigsaw Project and share their experiences of hate crime. Julia in-

formed the group, if you have been a victim of hate crime and would like to

help with the work that the Jigsaw Project do, there is an Expert by Expe-

rience volunteer position available. Please contact Julia if you are interest-

ed.

The group were then shown the ‘Hidden

Consequences’ film.

You can view the film on the MCCH website:

www.mcch.org.uk/jigsaw

The group found the film very powerful and gave a very positive re-

sponse.

Mick will write to the Medway Youth Trust to feedback the groups re-

sponse to the film.

6

The group asked if there could be a second film showing

what happened with the police. Julia suggested writing down any ideas of what you would

like to see included in the film and send to Julia.

Mate crime role play and discussion

Michelle, Alex, Mick, Tanya, Danni and Alex did a roleplay about mate crime.

The group discussed what is a good friend and what is a bad friend.

What can you do if someone calls you

names?

This is a mate crime, walk away and

report it.

Theme for the next meeting

The group discussed the themes for the next meeting.

E Safety, being secure online, Facebook security.

Trading Standard Alerts

Please contact Joanne Cunningham if you would like to receive the

Trading Standard alerts via email.

7

Rumours, scams and

Trading Standards alerts

Trading Standards are able to send you alerts

via email and Facebook.

Dawn said that should you get a call from a number that you do not rec-

ognise, you can check the phone number online using Google. Often in

the search results, it may suggest that the number is a scam number.

Postal Scam

You will receive a delivery card through the post saying

that you have a parcel waiting in your name, it will ask

you to call them to arrange delivery.

This is a scam as the call will then charge you £15

per minute.

Rumours, scams and

Trading Standards alerts

(Continued)

Please be wary if you receive a delivery card through your letterbox

that does not look genuine and asks you to dial a number.

Royal Mail and Trading Standards are working together to try to tackle

scam mail in the postal system and encourage people who believe that

they are receiving scam mail to report it.

If you think you or a family member is receiving scam

mail, you can report it to the Royal Mail. You can contact

them using the email address and phone number below.

[email protected]

03456 113 413

They will send you a scam mail report form that you will

need to fill in and a prepaid addressed envelope so you

can return the form with the scam mail that you

received.

There used to be a Keeping Safe newsletter that had tips

for keeping safe at Christmas, could we send this out to the

group? Joanne will look into this.

Any Other Business

Mick wished everyone a Happy Christmas but reminded

the group about the risks and keeping safe at Christmas.

Make sure that Christmas presents are not on view

from windows and that boxes from open Christmas

presents are not left outside on view.

The group were also reminded to be aware of who is around you when

you are using cash machines and always cover your pin.
