TOKI CLOTHES CLOSET We provide students with clothing options if they come to school un-prepared, something breaks or tears, or if they just need a few ex-tra things. We are al-ways looking for more clothes to add to our closet! We also want kids to feel like they can choose what they feel most com-fortable in should they need something to wear, so the more options the better! We can always use camisoles, zip-up sweat-shirts, socks (long and short), leggings or athletic pants, and winter clothing options (especially boots and coats)! We also love to get hygiene items! The clothes can be new or used, but need to be clean. Anything you can do to help make sure our students are wearing appropriate and fashionable clothing that help them feel more comfortable and confident while at Toki Middle School is appreciated. Feel free to call Gina Aguglia, Toki Social Work-er, with questions, comments or if you are in need of clothing. She can be reached at 608-204-4778. You may also drop dona-tions in the main office. Thank you!!

FROM MS. BARNES’S ART STUDIO…

This month I wanted to highlight a 7th grade Art project.

Environmental Art is the process of making Art outside using natural materials. It can be as quick and sim-ple as arranging fall leaves in a pattern and as complex and time consuming as The Mastaba, a Christo sculpture currently in the works that will be made out of 410,000 oil barrels, making it the largest sculpture in the world. Environmental Art is a student favorite because we get to go outside! Students can work by themselves or with up to two partners. They need to scout a space for their sculpture and find natural materials to use. This quarter's class went outside when it was unseasonably warm for the first day. There was lots of packa-ble snow. The second day it was warmer still, and students worried about their projects melting. The final day was postponed due to bitter cold. When we could return outside, students found that the ice compo-nents of their sculptures were doing fine, but it was nearly impossible to work with the snow. Students faced the challenge of changing weather head on, changing their designs as needed in order to finish their projects by the deadline. I am proud of my Art students' ability to work as a team, be flexible when things are outside their control, and use creative problem solving. Included this month are photos of some of our amazing sculptures! If you would like to see Toki student artists' work in person, you'll get your chance February 2-10 at the Youth Art Month Regional Student Art Exhibit. Artwork will be displayed at Hilldale Mall by the following Toki students: 6th Grade: Hannah Zhai, Anna Williams, Mira Tcherneva, Luke Pliszka, Nikolas Petranek 7th Grade: Dayana Blanco, Lauryn Anthony, Nathan Swartz 8th Grade: Kristen Erickson, Brock MacDonald, Jade Proctor, Nicole Tosto, Gabrielle Watson Students will be eligible for several different state awards. Congratulations on being selected and best of luck!

CREW-IN-THE-LIBRARY Toki has added a new di-mension to the CREW experience for all stu-dents. It’s “CREW-in-the-

Library,” a program sponsored by the LMC and hosted by Madge Klais, the teacher-librarian. Every day one CREW class meets in the library to hear about specific resources and to select and check out books and magazines. Seventh- and eighth-grade CREWS meet once every three weeks in the library, and sixth-grade CREW participate in the program once every two weeks. The goals for this program are: To engage students in reading for pleasure; To encourage a daily reading habit;

To provide opportunities students might not otherwise have to check out materials from the Toki library.

To date, students have learned about “dystopian” fiction, exemplified by the novel, Ship Breaker, in-formational (non-fiction) books that feature human-made and nature-made mummies, and detective fiction related to the Internet Detectives Contest question, “Who is the first fictional detective and what is the name of the author who created him?” (Answer: C. Auguste Dupin, created by Edgar Allan Poe) They have also toured the new LMC website, where they can find ideas for books that they might like to read as well as many resources to support their school work.

THE EVOLVING TOKI LMC WEBSITE

We encourage parents and other family members to check out the new Toki library website, too. It is linked on the library home page in the Destiny computer catalog, and you can go directly to it from any computer inside or outside the library and the school at: www.madison.campusguides.com/toki. The arrival of the website was featured in last month’s Toki Times, but it has changed a great deal in the last month. Ms. Klais has added many research links for language arts, social studies, and general music classes.

Outstanding Young Person award winners (MLK Jr. Awards)

Miranda Johnson-Phillips, Tatiyana Benson, Maya Elliott, Mya Berry, Heavelynn Xiong, Kendra James

We are beginning to post student work on the website. You will find links to Animoto videos cre-ated by Marguerite Fairchild’s students on the page for sixth grade classes. These videos capture students’ reactions to their reading of Tuck Ever-lasting. In addition, sixth-graders in the Toki Art Club, led by our art teacher, Sara Barnes, have begun work on a mural for the library. Each stage of this work-in-progress is being documented on the LMC website. You see here what it looked like during Week 2 of the project.

Our second annual 6th Grade Celebration of Learning and Community Dinner was a great success. The event was attended by over 600 students, parents, teachers, and community members. It was an excellent opportunity for sixth graders to proudly present products from each core academic area. The displays included concept models on the water cycle, presentations on the writing process, "You Are What You Eat" 2-D and 3-D visuals, and museum quality pieces about the seven characteristics of a civilization and the five themes of Maya geography. In addition, families were able to connect and share a meal with one another. The evening con-cluded with a wonderful performance by the 6th grade band and choir. The Toki community is looking forward to carrying on this tradition for years to come.

GIVE BACK TO TOKI—THE TOKI PTA NEEDS YOUR HELP! Dear Toki Parents,

Our staff at Toki is truly committed to helping each of our children enjoy middle school and grow into young adults ready to successfully handle the demands of high school and life. As the parent of two Toki alumni and a 6th grader, I can say that I have always greatly appreciated how the Toki staff does so much for our stu-dents plus a lot of the “extra” work required for school events and fundraisers—work that is more often requested and done by parents at the elementary schools. There is little that the Toki staff asks of us as parents.

In the past years, the Toki PTA has tried to re-organize and re-vitalize parent and community support for our school and staff. We have suc-cessfully established our status as a 501 c 3 charitable organization and attempted to organ-ize fundraisers to provide our school with fund-ing for new items and opportunities. We have provided funding to create a Fitness Room and a new sound system among other smaller re-quests for equipment, supplies, and teacher workshops. Our staff has many wonderful ideas to provide more at Toki for our children. We need your help to make this possible.

We need parents to step-up to take on posi-tions requiring leadership: serve on the PTA board, manage fundraisers and events, organ-ize volunteers, work with the Toki Endowment, and provide communication. We realize that the middle school years are a busy time in all our lives, so ask a friend or spouse to share some responsibility with you—co-chair a fund-raiser or share a position.

Parent meetings will be held to help keep our Toki PTA on the right track. Please let me know if you would be interested in meeting to discuss a role for you with the Toki PTA by emailing me at: [email protected]. Meeting times are flexible and will be established based on the needs of those who respond.

Thanks for your consideration, Angie Hubbard, Toki PTA, Vice President

SUPPORT TOKI AT VITENSE GOLFLAND! Throughout February, on Monday and Tuesday nights, from 4-9 pm, Vitense will donate 15% of most purchases to schools participating in their “Support Our Schools” fundraiser. To donate to Toki, place your receipt in the “Toki Middle School” box in the Vitense lobby.

Toki PTA Meeting Minutes Jan 9, 2013 (minutes have not been approved)

Meeting called to order 6:36pm. Nicole Schaefer updated parents that the new elevator addition was predicted to open at the start of

the second semester. Angie Hubbard updated attendees that the PTA has provided funds for a new flat screen TV for the

gathering space. The TV will be mounted to the wall and used for announcements. Nicole mentioned that the TV will be protected by a Plexiglas or similar cage.

Angie also updated that the PTA has purchased 10 folding tables and approved spending on new choir chairs for the school. The tables will be used by a variety of staff for school events.

Four additional folding tables were requested by the school and approved by the PTA members in at-tendance at the meeting.

Mark Herman presented the PTA’s general ledger report to date. Fall fundraisers were on track with predicted revenue. Angie noted that previous vender for PTA’s Spring Plant Sale has dropped fund-raising aspect of business. Discussion was had on holding plant sale this year. It was determined that although a chair is available there is limited parent help to coordinate the sale for the amount of profit anticipated. Vote was in favor of not holding a PTA Plant sale this spring. (NOTE: It was later discov-ered that the PTA general ledger distributed at the meeting was in error of misreporting 2011-12 num-bers. An updated version of the general ledger will be distributed at the next PTA meeting.)

An inquiry was made on the status of the Toki Student Directory for this year. Parent volunteer Rhon-da Rohn had recently completed the directory. (Directory compiling was started later due to late re-quest by PTA.) No information was available on the predicted distribution date.

General discussion was had on increasing parent involvement in PTA and PTA fundraising efforts. There was a general consensus to simplify fundraising for busy families. Suggestions to make “PTA Monetary Donation Request Forms” more readily available and to look into “Restaurant Nights” were favorably received. Jen Kutsunis volunteered to assist with researching “Restaurant Nights.” It was noted that more parent help is needed on the board to continue PTA involvement at Toki.

Topic for discussion for March PTA meeting was discussed. “Internet Safety” presenter from a previ-ous year’s meeting will be contacted to inquire on availability.
