The Akogare was built in 1993 as a training vessel for use by the city of Osaka in international marine training. Since 1994, it has been used insailing training programs open to all participants aged 10 years and above. In addition to training professional sailors and educating youngpeople in general, it also is used for purposes such as corporate training. In 2000, it was the first Japanese vessel to circle the world by travelingeastward passing through Europe.
