Sacred Connections

From the New York Times Metropolitan Diary:

“Emerging from the subway at 96th and Broadway, I heard the familiar sound of a man preaching from a Bible. Some things never change. But the Bible caught my eye – it was thinner than usual. The man was preaching from a kindle! Some things will never be the same.” (Ora Shtull)

Some things never change, some will never be the same.

Rosh HaShanah, our Jewish new year, is a time for considered change. In fact, the word “shanah,” translated as “year,” shares the same Hebrew root as the word for “change.” We might even translate Rosh HaShanah as “Head of the Change.” At this season, we are meant to reflect on our past, evaluate who and where we are, and determine what course corrections need to be made.

Change is an inevitable part of life, but it is not easy. We crave the comfortable and familiar. We are creatures of habit. Knowing what to expect makes us feel safe and at home.

For me, these holy days represent a change in my home life. After 28 years of having at least one child at home, we are now “empty nesters.” It seemed like it would never happen, but with our youngest leaving for college we are back to just two of us (plus our dog Scout!). As any of you who have been through this transition know, the house feels emptier, quieter and still. Adjusting to this new normal will take some time.But change is also exciting. With change comes new opportunities for experiences and growth. It is exhilarating to know that no matter how old we get we might still learn, develop and transform.

Teshuva, which translates roughly as repentance, is a promise of the possibility of change. George Bernard Shaw once remarked that the only person who understood him was his tailor, since his tailor measured him anew each time they met. His tailor understood that year over year, we are not the same. Life demands change.

At Temple Beth Sholom, we hope your Rosh HaShanah inspires you to make the changes you need to make for personal growth and renewal. As a congregation we continue to grow and change, as well. We welcome our newest rabbi, Joanne Loiben to our clergy team. Rabbi Loiben is excited to revitalize our youth program. We also welcome our new Justice Fellow, Rachel Lilenbaum, who grew up at Temple Beth Sholom.

We will continue to expand, experiment and engage in new ways, at the same time as we retain the constancy of our warm, inviting and inclusive neighborhood.

A final word about change–please make sure you check your TBS High Holy Day schedule (page 14) carefully as many changes have been made. We look forward to sharing precious moments with you in the days to come. L’Shanah Tova! Wishing each one of you a good new year, a year of change, hope and promise.

Each Shabbat morning before our Shabbat Morning Minyan (10:30 am), you will study Parashat HaShavua, the weekly Torah portion. The rabbis will lead a discussion of ancient commentaries and teachings and reveal the Torah’s modern and relevant lessons.

Tot Shabbat10:00 am | SaturdayJoin us Saturday morning at 10:00 am for a wonderful young family Shabbat expe-rience. This interactive program is geared for families with children up to the age of five years old. Prayer, music, stories, movement, activities, snacks and much more will be featured. Following Tot Shabbat, families stay and enjoy time together in our beautiful playground. Shabbat Morning Minyan10:30 am | Saturday Join us Saturday mornings at 10:30 am in our beautiful chapel or sanctuary. Our clergy and members of our congregation help to lead the prayers and read the Torah. Kiddush lunch follows.

jLAB Family ShabbatEach Saturday morning, jLAB students in grades K-5 and their parents (and other significant grown-ups) gather together in the chapel from 9:30-10:00 am for a lively Shabbat morning t’filah experience. This is a great opportunity to learn the prayers of our liturgy and connect with the words of our prayer service. All those with children in this age group are welcome to join us! Dear Families,

As we approach our High Holy Day season, thinking about this past year and our year to come, I am hopeful that 5780 will bring healing, growth, understanding and peace to our beautifully diverse community, worldwide, as we move forward as one human race. May our differences strengthen us, our energy build peaceful paths for all, and our empathetic souls take care of one another to build a better world.

At Temple Beth Sholom Innovative School, our professional team of educators work daily to nurture our children’s moral dispositions towards becoming people who are perspective takers, who will engage in respectful interactions, and will know how to negotiate differences with dignity. We have built a safe space within our walls for disagreement and agreement, for understanding and misunderstandings, and for joy and sorrow. Our children are developing their voices and learning that what they think matters. We want our children’s childhood to be a time of emotional empowerment, and deep learning about how to live together while making sacred memories that will last a lifetime! May 5780 be a year for our world to become a safer space for everyone to express themselves, especially differences, in constructive and relational ways. May the memories we make this year, not only last a lifetime but build a lifetime for all.

An internationally renowned educator, Bev Bos, sang together with the late Tom Hunter his beautiful song about memories. “What do you remember from the time you were a child? Do you think of moments memory knows well? Are there little things like trinkets you carry with you now, that trigger stories memory wants to tell?” And it goes on to say, “may the memories wrap their arms around

you, may your childhood take you by the hand. And may what you remember find healing when it hurts, so the memories will protect you when they can.” Our amazing professional team is taking the necessary time daily to build memories with our most precious resource, our children. Our KEHILLA APPROACH™, which I wrote about last month,

is our daily guide for building meaningful and values-based memories together.

In closing, I am sharing Maya Angelou’s quote about feelings because our memories are rooted in our feelings: “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” May each and everyone of us find opportunities to grow positive feelings together in 5780!

...We have the

opportunity to

be models for

our children...

Last month we learned that the Detention Center of migrant children in Homestead was emptied of occupants. After months of our showing up at rallies and advocating along with the migrant-led, multi-faith coalition to shut down the Detention Center, we hoped that the children in detention were reunited with family members in time for the new school year. And it would remain shut down.

But unfortunately, the practice of indefinite, government-sponsored, for-profit child detention continues. And federal government sources have already announced plans to re-open Homestead in mid-October (Miami Herald, Aug. 14). Last month saw yet another incident of anti-immigrant violence, with the mass shooting act of terrorism in El Paso, Texas. Our local work in support of immigrants and in preventing gun violence is far from done.

So what can you do? This fall, we encourage you to get trained at “citizenship clinics” for undocumented immigrants organized by our coalition partner, the Florida Immigrant Coalition. These clinics allow native English speakers to help recent immigrants navigate the daunting paperwork involved in applying for permanent residency and citizenship in the U.S. You can also host or attend a Justice Jam this season, in-home gatherings to learn and discuss immigration justice in Florida. Additionally, our Gun Violence Prevention Task Force will be collecting signatures to get the Ban Assault Weapons Now provision on the next Florida ballot, and you can help by signing

on. The Task Force will also be training parents in Miami Beach school in the Be SMART campaign this year, which asks gun owners and non-gun owners alike to take simple steps to reduce the number of unintentional shootings, suicides, and homicides that occur when children or teens get a hold of guns that are not stored responsibly.

There is a lot to do this fall, and the month of Elul, which begins on September 1, is also a time to look inward. Each year as we prepare for the High Holy Days, we ask ourselves, “What kind of person have I been the past year?” “What habits have I cultivated that help me flourish in relationship with others, and what habits stand in the way?” This year you might also ask yourself about ways you’ve shown up for others: family members, friends, community members and those most vulnerable in our greater community. May this be a year of increasing love and joy in community. May our Jewish identities and sacred community continue to strengthen us to pursue justice in diverse coalitions.

The famous line above, from Pirkei Avot, is immediately preceded by this additional teaching of Rabbi Tarfon: “The day is short, and the work is plentiful… and the reward is great.” In the persistent pursuit of justice, we learn that just as the stakes are great, so too is the reward. our bond with our “Sisters.” Temple Beth Sholom Sisterhood helps to complete our journey. As women

we have important roles in life; learning, teaching, inspiring, sharing, and so much more. We have always

had to fight for our rights, as far back as the daughters of Zelophehad. Five tenacious sisters appeared before Moses and plead their case as to why they should have the right to inherit their Father’s land after his passing, as there was no male heir. They did not want their father’s land to be taken from them or his name lost. Moses listened and granted their request. Their determination changed not just tradition, but the laws of ownership. Although we have come a very long way, in many cases, we are still fighting for our rights today. The strong bonds we share as mothers, daughters, and sisters help us through each crusade. Join us and share with one another as we grow stronger together and have FUN doing what needs to be done. Never forget, as our Sisters, you are always in our hearts.

On any given Shabbat, one can attend synagogue services and either hear the same compositions week after week or hear significant variations to the repertoire. Sometimes a particular musical setting opens up our spiritual self that hadn’t been opened before. As a result, there are hundreds of settings to every prayer, psalms, wedding ceremonies, and more. The constant evolution of repertoire is in line with the essence of Reform Judaism. In the last ten years alone, we have a new Shabbat and weekday prayer book as well as a new machzor—High Holy Day prayer book. New melodies are being written every day, many based upon the readings incorporated in these prayer books. Musical diversity in our services is an opportunity for growth. New settings are written not to replace, but to add to our worship experience as we seek to connect to The Divine in a multitude of ways.

Since my tenure began, it has been my greatest desire to share my passion for Jewish liturgical music by bringing to our congregation some of our country’s leading artists. I am delighted to launch the Shir Chadash Concert Series of Temple Beth Sholom. A composer, multi-instrumentalist, and recording artist, Elana Arian inspires communities across the country with her soulful songwriting and spirit. She spent 12 years in residence at Central Synagogue and has performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Aspen, Tanglewood and the White House.

The One Congregation Service for Erev RoshHaShanah and Rosh HaShanah combines the most beloved elements of our Traditional and Unplugged services in a new way.

The Youth Experience (Grades K-6) parallels the Main Sanctuary and Traditional Services on both Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. Teens in grades 7-12 are invited to volunteer as teen leaders for Youth High Holy Day Programming. They will be responsible for helping to innovate and create High Holy Day prayer services and programming for kids in grades K-6. Teens are welcome to participate for both of the High Holy Days, or choose just one. In addition to spending time at URJ Camp Coleman each summer, I also have the great pleasure and opportunity to serve on the faculty of the URJ 6 Points Creative Arts Academy (CAA). Being passionate about both arts and Judaism, having the ability to teach in an environment that seamlessly merges the two areas is inspiring.

Much of our jLAB program was inspired by the 6 Points specialty camps, and while immersed in the CAA environment, I always learn valuable insights to bring back to my work at Temple Beth Sholom. As a new camp, having just completed its second summer, there are always ways to step back and evaluate the program, and to make changes accordingly. Some changes can be made immediately, while others need thought and consideration before being implemented. Watching the leadership of CAA do this intentionally and skillfully has been informative to my approach in doing the same with jLAB.

Since URJ 6 Points Sports Academy opened in 2010, the URJ specialty camps have widened Jewish camping opportunities within the Reform Movement. The URJ 6 Points Sports, Sci-Tech, and Creative Arts Academies provide Jewish summer experiences to youth who also want to focus on a particular area of interest; previously, kids who wanted to specialize in one of these areas had to choose between that OR a Jewish camp. This includes me – I attended a fine arts camp for several years and did not step foot in a Jewish summer camp setting until high school. Had something like CAA existed then, I would have been able to do both simultaneously!

If one of these camping opportunities sounds like the right fit for your child, please connect with me so we can talk further. In addition to serving as a CAA faculty member, I am a camp mom of TWO specialty camp participants and can also speak to you about it from that perspective. As with URJ Camp Coleman, we partner with the specialty camps in providing year-round Jewish experiences for our youth, and I would love for your child(ren) to enjoy the magic of Jewish summer camp!

As of July 1, 2019, Barb Shimansky has assumed a new position with the Association of Reform Jewish Educators (ARJE). Barb has been involved with ARJE leadership since 2013 and has just started a three-year term as the Member Engagement Coordinator, matching members with volunteer opportunities within the organization. Mazal Tov to Barb as she continues in leadership with her North American professional organization!

This has always been one of my favorite Biblical quotations. As the new rabbi at Temple Beth Sholom, I am thrilled to start working with the youth in our community. I will use this teaching from Proverbs as a guide, as I believe that every person has their own “torah” that will guide them. When people are allowed to be who they are, the best results emerge.

I’ve already had a great time getting to know some of the teens over coffee, as I want to learn about who they are and what drives them. I plan to empower the youth to lead and develop their own programming based on their passions and interests. I want them to discover the incredible opportunities for growth and connections

that are inherent in leadership experiences. I will strive to cultivate a community of young leaders, as the youth make connections to their Jewish traditions, build relationships with their peers, and look to the world to see how they can make an impact.

I believe by engaging every teen in their own way, it will lead them to follow their path confidently and to love Judaism. My hope is that when they reflect on their experiences here at the Temple—the leadership, the lessons, and the values—their fiery passion will continue to guide their lives.

For adults who never had a bar/bat mitzvah as a teen, Cantor Lisa Segal will lead you through this journey. Class instruction will include life-long skills including “Hebrew from Scratch”liturgy, history and holidays. Home assignments and projects are part of the preparation.

The class will participate in a group mitzvah project and will be encouraged to attend Shabbat morning minyan services in order to feel part of our community. The course of study will commence January 2020 and will culminate in a group b’nei mitzvah service in the Fall.
