• Global Harvest Foods is a buyer of Blackoil sunflower.

• We use approx. 130 million pounds of Black oil sunflower per year (company wide)

• 8-10 Million pounds out of our manufacturing plant in Mead, WA

• We estimate 6-7000 acres are needed to cover our needs in Mead, WA(Based on Yields of 1500# per Acre)

• Last year 2600 acres were planted.

• Why plant Sunflowers?• Benefits to Rotation

• Helps to improve soil tilth & structure• Sunflowers Deep tap root helps to break thru soil pan. (3’-6’ deep)

• Helps utilize moisture deep in the soils

• Pulls nutrients from deep in the soil profile.

• Increased yields on crops the following year.

• Types of sunflowers

• Confections – For in-shell market

• Oils- for Bird food, Crush and De-hulling markets.

• Markets

• Blackoil Sunflowers typically go into three different markets

• De-hullers• Process and remove the meats for many types of edible products. • De-hullers have standards for size and test weight.

• Oil Crush• Crushes the sunflowers for oil.

• Very few standards for quality.

• Bird Food• Less stringent on specifications• Moisture content most critical.• We can work around Test Weight and Dockage.

• Planting / Harvest

• Planting takes place Mid April thru Mid May. • Use a pre-emergent before planting

• BroadAxe or Glyphosate

• Sunflowers are best planted after grass crops or fallow.

• Sunflowers like well drained soils.

• How to plant?

• Air Drill• Works Good. Seed spacing harder to control.

• Corn Planter• Works Best

• More accuracy.

• Harvest

• Usually takes place MID October• Yields typically 1200-2700# Per Acre.

• Harvest with Combine outfitted with Sunflower pans.
