Commander’s Message

Cdr M David Rice, SN

T he United States Power Squadrons’

highest award for Excellence in

Teaching has been given this year to

our very own P/D/C Brian Logan, SN.

This is a very special award and we should all be

especially proud to have Brian as one of this year’s winners.

To give us and idea of just how special this award is, I decided to

look into what it takes to be a Chapman Award winner. Each year

National’s Educational Department conducts an extensive search

through every squadron and district to identify and recognize five

of our very best instructors. This search and recognition program

leads up to the presentation at the USPS Annual Meeting in

January of the Charles F. Chapman Award for Excellence in

Teaching.

The screening process starts in the spring, when every squadron

(through its Squadron Educational Officer) is asked to identify and

nominate its very best currently

active teacher. A nomination packet

is then put together by the squadron.

It provides basic biographical data

about the squadron's nominee,

specifics of his/her teaching

activities, a current photograph, and

up to five supporting letters from

squadron members explaining why

they feel this person is such an

outstanding teacher. I do not know

what was said in the various letters

recommending Brian, but traits such

as knowledge of the topic,

enthusiasm, inspiration, and the

ability to explain difficult topics are

often cited in letters of

recommendation, and I think you

would agree that they apply to

Brian.

Winners of the Charles F. Chapman Award for Excellence in

Teaching are honored in several ways. Each receives a recognition

plaque and special lapel pin at the Annual Meeting and has his/

her name inscribed in a permanent log book in the Chapman

Memorial Library at USPS headquarters in Raleigh. Each winner's

squadron is also presented with a useful award of significant

value, given in the winner's name; Brian will be presented with a

high quality sextant for the squadron in his name.

Joy and I plan to be in Orlando to applaud at Brian’s award

presentation and I hope that many other Akron Sail and Power

Squadron members can join us. Go to www.usps.org and register

for the national meeting in Orlando in February. If you have

trouble signing in call me at 330-819-4993.

T he D7 Fall Conference was another

success, and Akron retained the cov-

eted Rocky River Tankard for our hos-

pitality room. Thank you again to all

the volunteers on the planning committee who

helped. Special thanks to Lt/C Tom Vielhaber, AP for his tasty

“mummy wraps”, as well as P/C Susan Harris, S and P/Lt/C Mar-

go Holmes, AP for their hard work on the costumes.

Akron also made the NOAA Cooperative Charting honor role for

the 8th time. Additionally, P/D/C Bob Ball, SN, R/C Craig Fraser,

SN and Aide/CC Liana Mihalca, SN made the NOAA Cooperative

Charting honor roll individually!

The Spring Conference will be hosted by Stark County April 1-3,

2016. It will be held at the McKinley Grand Hotel in Canton. The

theme is 60’s TV shows, and Akron’s TV show is the Beverly Hill-

billies. We should have a lot of fun with that theme.

Please remember to bring an unused and unwrapped toy or mon-

etary donation to the December 3rd meeting in support of the

Christmas Holiday Toy Room for Summit County Children’s Ser-

vices (SCCS). This year they are in a new and bigger location,

which Sandy DeLuca spoke about at the November meeting.

Thanks again to Lt. Jackie Summers for her work leading this

project.

Save the date for the Change of Watch on Febru-

ary 13th at Rustic Hills Country Club in Medina.

Last but not least, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas

and happy holiday season. See you in the new year.

For this month I return to Rules of the Road questions. Answers

I think we took our boat out of the water

too soon as both October and November

have had some spectacularly warm sunny

days. But if we'd kept it in, you know

there would have been snow.

Please sign up on line for the Christmas party at Turkeyfoot

Island Club on December 12 from 6:30 til 10:00. Dress is infor-

mal (no uniforms) and

the evening will be full

of good food, carols

and friendship. There

will be an hors d'oeu-

vres buffet and you

will be able to dine

throughout the main

floor of the house.

The decorations are

always amazing and

we will have Christmas

music and carols on

the grand piano,

thanks to my good

friend, Linda Meier.

It is BYOB so bring your favorite libation and join us!

I hope you have enjoyed learning about how boats in our

squadron received their names. Lt Michael Krebs, JN and his

wife, Lois, have a 23' Sea Ray which is named RYOT. I was a bit

afraid to ask why it was named that, wondering if they had a

dark unknown history behind it. But, as it turns out, their older

son is named Ryan and their younger son is named Scott so the

combo name honors them. No dark history after all!

Ohio License Plates Available

Thanks to legwork from P/C Terry Sapyta,

P, (Mansfield) and other members of

Mansfield Power Squadron, special USPS

Plates are now available in Ohio.

I was not too sure about how to order

these. When my “regular” plates were up

for renewal, I went to the License Bureau,

where the clerks helped me fill out the

proper forms. The cost, including the fee

for a “new plate” (rather than just a stick-

er on the old one) was $92.59. It should

be less next year when I just get a renew-

al sticker. Ohio squadrons get $15 for

each plate.

Respectfully submitted,

P/D/C Brian Logan, SN

Now I need a bumper sticker that says, "My Other Car is a Boat"!

I t doesn’t seem possible that the year is

coming to an end already. I still have such

strong memories of the summer’s boating

fun. In fact, the picture of Happy Daze be-

ing lifted out of the water is still my Facebook cover photo. I

guess I’d better change that!

Speaking of Facebook upates, our squadron roster might be in

need of some updating, as well. Have you bought a new boat,

changed marinas, moved? We like to keep our roster current,

and it’s time to prepare the 2016 Fleet and Membership Roster

for publication. P/Lt/C Janice Vitucci-Ehrman, P will begin that

daunting task at the beginning of January. Please send any

changes to her via email at [email protected]. I know that

updating the roster isn’t your first thought when you make

changes, so I’m reminding you to take a few minutes now to

keep us all in the loop. Janice and I thank you!

In member updates, Tom Carrino has been recovering from a

nasty fall. We expect him to be back to 100% very soon. Our

sympathies have been sent to Janice Vitucci-Ehrman on the pass-

ing of her mother in Cincinnati. Please keep Janice in your

thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

Christmas Charity

Summit County Children Services

Christmas is approaching and, once again, Akron Sail and Power

Squadron is adopting the Summit County Children Services (SCCS)

for our civic holiday program. The Children Services has several

programs to help needy families. We have chosen the Holiday

Toy Room Program.

Sandy DeLuca, the Community Relations Manager for SCCS,

spoke at our November 5 meeting to explain the project.

The Holiday Toy Rooms contain a wide array of new, unwrapped

gifts which needy families can select for their children. It is simi-

lar to shopping in a store – families get a number of “points”

they can use to “select” new gifts to take home and wrap for

their children. Typical gifts are less than $15-25, although other

gifts are welcome. This year, they are particularly asking for

“Movie” theme gifts – like Star Wars, Minions, Frozen, Inside

Out, Avengers, Peanuts, Good Dinosaur, and SpongeBob.

At our December 3 meeting, Lt Jackie and P/C Bob Summers, P,

will be collecting unwrapped gifts, money, and checks (“Summit

County Children Services”). You can also volunteer to be a

“Personal Shopper” and assist the families at the Children Ser-

vices location in Akron. Over the past seven years, Akron Sail and

Power Squadron has donated cash and gifts of more than

$10,000 to the charity.
