PROJECTSPROFILE

A group of prominent Muslim businessmen set out to establish The Al Ansaar Foundation in 1994 (1414 AH) in the hope of uplifting and improving the Imaan of the Ummah (Spirituality of the community). While there were already other Islamic organisations in existence, these visionaries understood that it was their duty to address issues which they felt had been neglected. Therefore, The Al Ansaar Foundation was established to form an Islamic infrastructure to restore Islamic valuesandpractices among South Africans and ultimately to transcend the morals of Islam globally. As a result, the Ummah will become more enlightened, educated and informed, thus empowering Muslims to become active members of their respective communities. The Al Ansaar Foundation has grown to achieve a track record of being one of the most progressive and active organisations in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Since 1994, the Al Ansaar Foundation has established steadfast projects to assist and aidboth Islamic and Non-Islamic Communities such as:

Vision To create an enlightened, informed, educated and Islamically active community in South Africa.

Mission To promote Islamic education and guidance (tarbiyyah and ta`leem) at all levels of Islamic society in order to develop practicing Muslims who are fully equipped to meet the challenges facing modern society and the transformations taking place on the African continent.

Radio Al Ansaar

Durban 90.4fm /Pietermaritzburg 105.6fmProfile:

With most of the media being controlled and influenced by non-Muslim based organizations, it was only a matter of time until a group of Muslim visionaries who had founded the Al Ansaar Foundation back in 1994 began toying with the concept of Islamic based community radio. The community needed a radio station that would educate, uplift and ultimately unite the Muslim community.

Initially, Radio Al Ansaar operated as just an annual radio station, broadcasting for only 45 days during the period surrounding Ramadaan, the Muslim holy month of fasting.

The Al Ansaar Foundation worked tirelessly to secure permanent broadcasting rights and in August 2012, the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) had awarded the Al Ansaar Foundation a 5 year renewable license to broadcast 24/7 on the 90.4fm bandwidth, an achievement for the Muslim community of South Africa. During June 2014, the ICASA had awarded the Al Ansaar Foundation a further license to broadcast in Pietermaritzburg on the 105.6fm bandwidth.

Under the umbrella of the Al Ansaar Foundation, Radio Al Ansaar is affiliated with various community outreach programs assisting the underprivileged, co-hosting career and religious seminars etc. It is also important to note that even though Radio Al Ansaar is predominantly Muslim based, there is still no discrimination in terms of religion, as employees and invited guests comprise of religions other than Islam as well.

With the awarding of the Pietermaritzburg broadcast license by the ICASA, Radio Al Ansaar is expected to grow its target audience by almost 300,000 new listeners, thus reaching a bigger community and increasing exposure for both listeners and sponsors alike.

With a revamped programme lineup, interactive phone-in segments, special invited guests, dynamic presenters and a dedicated team comprising of technicians, administration and support staff, Radio Al Ansaar is now the only community based Muslim radio station in Kwa Zulu Natal.

Having successfully pioneered various sustainable projects such as the Etazkiyyah Centres for Learning, Ibn Masud Centre of Excellence, Radio Al Ansaar, the Al Ansaar Souk and so forth, the Al Ansaar Foundation has literally outgrown its existing premises. To cope with the growth of existing projects and to cater for the ongoing development of new projects, the establishment of a Community and Cultural Centre has become an integral part of the Al Ansaar Foundation’s future strategy.

This project was initiated in 2005 and is the biggest of its kind in South Africa. Covering approximately 7730 m2 over

The objective is to create a self-sustaining facility which caters for all the needs of the Muslim community and to create a “hub” of knowledge and learning. This centre will operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

memberships, the wellness centre will cater to the many Muslim females that require these facilities in an Islamic environment.

the sole purpose being to service the community in excellence. Thus far, as the Al Ansaar Community and Cultural Centre is still an ongoing project, an appeal is made to the community to assist to achieve completion.

The Al-Ansaar Community and Cultural Centre

Quite aptly titled Al Ummah which in the Arabic language means, ‘The Community’, this monthly newspaper publication is a project formed by the Al Ansaar Foundation in 1999.

The publication is distributed free of charge to the community and uses strategic distributionpoints such as mosques, businesses, organisations in order to reach its target audience. Primarily, the objective of this paper is the dissemination of news about Islam and Muslims. This initiative is designed to stimulate a spirit of Ukhuwwah (Islamic brotherhood) by creating a platform for community interaction.

The editorial team continuously reviews the content of the publication to ensure that a high quality of articles, advertisements and general information is maintained.Proceeds attainedare re-injected to fund the Foundation’s various non-fund generating project that serve to the benefit the community.

Wheelchair and Walking aid Distribution Programme

The Blanket Drive is an initiative by the Yadul Ansaar programme that started in 2011 where presenters and staff of the Al Ansaar Foundation collected and distributed blankets to the poor, the homeless and various shelters in and around Durban, South Africa.

This project has seen many people benefit especially in rural areas such as Inchanga and Umlazi with almost 2500 blankets distributed to date. The project has seen many prominent personalities attend to the distribution with the Mayor of Durban, Cllr James Nxumalo attending the 2012 event.

The Diaper Drive is another Yadul Ansaar initiative that began in 2013. The programme is successfully running at present and hopes to continue well into the future. Diapers are purchased by the community and delivered to Al Ansaar Foundation from which they are distributed to old age homes, orphanages and underprivileged people countrywide.

A few years ago at one of the Al Ansaar Foundation’s outreach projects, a woman was wheeled-in on a wheelbarrow to collect food on the day of Eid. This had touched the heart of Mr Abdul Razak Moosa, CEO of the Willowton Group, and pained him so much, that he immediately gave his daughter’s wheelchair to the sick woman.

This incident along with other requests from the community sparked the creation of the “Able to Disable” campaign where the organisation successfully distributes approximately 200 wheelchairs per annum at no cost to the frail and weak each year. This makes the “Able to Disable” programme truly one of its kind in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

In addition to the wheelchair distribution, the Al Ansaar Foundation further assists with walkers, commodes, hearing aids, sugar and pressure testing machines to name a few. Requests can also be made for children which has to be custom made. Required requests for aids can be made possible through on-air appeals on the Yadul Ansaar show every Friday from 10-11 am with Ayesha Jamaal, exclusive to Radio Al Ansaar.

In conjunction with the Foot Focus Group, Jamaatun Nisa, the World Memon Organisation and many anonymous donors this project has enabled the Al Ansaaar Foundation to provide the much needed service to the disabled community of both the Islamic and Non-Islamic faiths.

The Al Ansaar Foundation looks forward to providing the required aid to the public through generous donations and sponsorships as well as through appeals on radio.

keeping the wheels rolling

The Etazkiyyah Centres for Learning was one of the leading projects undertaken by the Al Ansaar Foundation in 1994 and was established at 222 Kennilworth Road, Overport, Durban. Ultimately, the basis these centres were formed were for the underprivileged learners that could not afford private Islamic schools and Islamic tuition.

Classes are offered from grade 1 to grade 8 and the Madrassahs are supervised by the Islamic Educational Organisation of Southern Africa (IEOSA) and is coordinated by the Al Ansaar Foundation.

The Etazkiyyah Centres for Learning is the keystone of nurturing a religion with Islamic identities and instilling the roots of the Islamic faith into learners. A sports day, exciting excursions, a Jalsa (graduation) and an awards day are yearly events held on behalf of the Etazkiyyah Centres for Learning. These events have drawn families and thecommunity at large to become involved with the Madrassahs. In addition, speeches, debates and inter-Madrassha quiz competitions have been part of the curriculum to serve as opportunities for growthby interacting with learners from other Madrassahs. Consequently, the learners’ progress has thus far superseded all expectations.

As in any academic environment, the educators of the Etazkiyyah Centres for Learning are faced with the task of coping with learners that come from different home environments, upbringing and levels of Islamisation.

Etazkiyyah Centres for Learning

The Al Ansaar Foundation hosts various seminars throughout the year. The aim of such seminars is to educate and enlighten the community on important topics such as Hajj (Pilgrimage to Makkah and Medina) and Umrah,Marriage in Islam, Death and Inheritance, Quran, Crisis of the Global Ummah, Islamic Art and much more.

The Al Ansaar Foundation is well affiliated with the South African Hajj and Umrah Council (SAHUC) and has a seat on the Board of SAHUC. Additionally, the Al Ansaar Foundation is famous for the annual matric and career seminars for the youth. This has shown much success over the years.

Speakers and experts are well respected and generally represent most sects and branches of the Islamic faith. Some of the many distinguished speakers at previous seminars include Mufti AK Hoosen (Channel Islam International), Mufti Zubair Bhayat (Darul Ihsan), Moulana AR Khan, Mufti AH Elias, Moulana Ismail Patel and many more.

In addition to the seminars, the Al Ansaar Foundation organises conferences, public lectures and offer workshops on various Islamic topics. With these events, the objective of the Al-Ansaar Foundation is to educate, inform, unite, empower, inspire and motivate attendees to become better Muslims and active members of society at large.

Seminars

Size does count, but one also has to realize that in order to grow, one has to start small.

While many youth fill their car boots with expensive sound systems to play hypocritical and often controversial western music, some Muslim visionaries decided to instead fill a car boot with Islamic literature and media

One Friday in 1995, this car was parked outside the Sparks Road Musjid, Overport, Durban and immediately trans-formed into a mobile bookshop. The boot was filled with literature that would help to bring inner peace, literature that aimed to solve world problems, literature that will spread the message of our Creator and His Prophet (Peace e upon Him).

Due to an overwhelming response, the mobile bookshop found permanent premises at 222 Kenilworth Road, Durban, and the Tape and Bookshop was established. With the availability of additional space as compared to a car boot, the Tape and Bookshop had increased its range of products offered to the community. New products attracted more customers, increased exposure, more advertising, ultimately leading to growth. The name Tape and Bookshop was shortly adapted to meet the advancement of technol-ogy and resources, hence Al Ansaar Book and Media Centre was born.

Due to the fact that the Book and Media Centre had already developed into one of the largest fund-generating projects of the Al-Ansaar foundation, and yet again more space was needed to cope with the volume of products and demand of patrons, a sizeable portion of the Foundation’s new premises at 189 West Road, Overport, Durban was allocated to house the Book and Media Centre.

In a span of approximately 19 years since the car boot was opened to the public for business, the Al Ansaar Book and Media Center opens its doors 6 days a week to the public, now offering arguably the largest variety of books by any Islamic bookstore in South Africa. The products are sourced from within South Africa as well as internationally

Mrs Shaamia Joosab, these individuals recognised the urgent need to establish a Madrasah for the deaf. Due to the resounding success from this project, it was realised that a special needs school underpinned by Islamic values was required by the Muslim community in Kwa-Zulu Natal. The AK Jadwat family generously came forward and leased a premises situated at 133 Essendene Road, Overport, Durban free of charge to the Al Ansaar Foundation. In 2008, the Ibn Masud Centre of Excellence was established and opened its doors to its first learners

a place to learn, socialise and develop so that they can accomplish and sustain a productive, healthy and happy lifestyle. This centre will mainly cater for underprivileged children with special needs, who are often turned away from conventional institutions due to lack of funding or social status. Facilities

and play. Some of the facilities that comprise the various play areas of the institution include a jungle gym, swings, trampoline and a sand pit. Plans to expand the play area are under consideration, however space is a limiting factor. TherapyTreatment is on an individualised basis according to each learner’s diagnoses and requirements. The Following types of therapy are

· Occupational therapy· Speech therapy· Physiotherapy

The Al Ansaar Foundation maintains all related costs for the therapies stated above to all learners that cannot afford the fees. AcademicsAcademic AchievementSince the inception of the school, many learners who were previously turned away from mainstream educational institutions were accepted by the Ibn Masud Centre of Excellence and furthermore were accepted by those very same institutions that rejected them initially. This was due to the high standard of the programme offered at the school coupled with dedicated sincere staff. Academic ActivitiesThe school caters for children between the ages of 3 and 12 years old,

· Hearing and speech· Down’s syndrome· Autism· Muscular and cognitive disabilities· Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD)

Disorder (ADHD)· Slow learners Tailor made programmes specific to each learner’s strengths, weak-nesses and disability need to be created. The principal is therefore instrumental in assessing, drawing up, and executing the curriculum. Afternoon Madrasah is also available for the learners. The learners’ holistic needs are further enhanced by monthly parent support workshops and further skills training for staff.Individualised teaching ensures that each learner is given maximum attention and benefit to develop his/her potential and skills optimally. In addition, focus is centred on Numeracy and Literacy with emphasis on Life skills and Work skills programs. Furthermore, support services is an integral part of the child’s developmental programme is also included in the school.

Only part of the running costs of the school is subsidized by school funds. A large majority of the parents require financial assistance both for therapies and school funds. The shortfall is minimized by fund raising events, sponsorships and donations, however, there is a constant need of funding to operate and improve the standard of care for the learners. In just a short span of time the school has increased its enrolment from the initial 4 learners in 2008 to 32 in 2014. On a daily basis new applications are received but unfortunately have to be declined due to limited resources, predominantly space as well as funding. A humble appeal is made to the community to offer financial assis-tance irrespective of how big or small the contribution may be. “You are given sustenance and victory for the virtue of those who are weak amongst you” – Sheik Yusuf Al-Qaradawi

Cancer Support Group

It is well known that cancer is a life threaten-ing condition and to those affected by it, the experience of living through the illness is traumatic, daunting and demanding. The experience is not only to the patient, but also to the family of the patient. The purpose of the cancer support group is to provide assistance in understanding the illness, sharing of experiences and to provide support to those affected by the illness.

The Cancer Support Group although being Islamic based, caters for both the Muslim and Non-Muslim community in Kwa-Zulu Natal. The group was launched at the Mariam Bee Centre on the 20th of March 2010 and aims to empower its members with crucial information about the disease and illness. Patients are encouraged to develop a productive and positive outlook of life. Support and guidance from oncologists, physiotherapists, psychologists, dermatolo-gists and other related professional is available to all patients, patients in remission, caregivers, volunteers and family members.

The primary goals of the cancer support group is to teach coping skills, offer comfort, emotional support, reduce anxiety and a platform for people to express their mutual situation and concerns. Emotional support is vital for every cancer patient as this process allows people to deal with their social problems and state of health in a positive manner. The cancer support group further

focuses on both psychological treatments as well as the required medical care to cope with cancer. Attendees are expected to participate in the group interaction and behavioural training where tips and information is shared. The support group discusses behavioural training which involves muscle relaxation that will consequently reduce stress to cope with the effects of radiation therapy and chemo-therapy. Interaction between members in the support group has proven to enhance the emotional strength of people. In addition, the aim of the support group is to reduce stress and fear and to further expand the quality of life for cancer patients. The experts involved in the support group have the necessary training, skills and qualifications to carry out these difficult topics in their presentations. Experts are profession-ally trained enough to respect the boundaries concerning cancer and the patient diagnosed with cancer. The Al Ansaar Foundation manages such issues to protect the wellbeing of members and attendees.

The seminars have drawn positive responses of patients, caregivers, family members, volunteers and other interested attendees. Seminars include enlightening presentations by respected presenters that give an overview of the different types of cancer and different types of treatments available. Guest speakers and experts encourage patients to research and become more familiar with all types of

cancer. This in turn is usually followed by an intense question-and-answer session. Other activities run are the Pamper Day (mid-year), School Visits (Breast Cancer Awareness) and Year End Chai Day.

upliftment, and the role of and impact on families etc. Medical professionals will unpack these issues as well as oncologists and psychologists.

Currently, the Al-Ansaar Cancer Support Group holds meetings every second Saturday of every month at the Al Ansaar Hall, 189 West Road, Overport, Durban, South Africa. New members are most welcome to join.

Eid FeedingScheme

The feeding scheme was launched in 2006 and the Al Ansaar Foundation has once again risen to meet the

Meals are prepared at various key locations where a need to feed has been identified. Some of the venues include Tongaat, Verulam, Clairwood, Chatsworth, Escourt, Parlock and Overport. In addition to this massive feeding scheme on a single day, an on-going feeding scheme will take place every Sunday in targeted areas such as Kwa-Mashu, Inanda, Umlazi, Folweni and other surrounding areas. Dedicated staff members ensure that thousands of underprivileged people in the community are fed.

The Al Ansaar Foundation makes an appeal to the Muslim community to support this social welfare outreach programme as “…it highlights the true significance and importance of Ramadaan for Muslims,”said Mohammed Joosab, Chairperson of Al-Ansaar. We are in need of financial contributions as well as both young and old Muslims to become active in such a noble and Prophetic campaign.

The Al Ansaar Foundation is indeed sincerely grateful to the several donors, sponsors and volunteers of the past years that sacrificed their family time to ensure that the poor and needy receive a hot meal on the day of Eid-ul-Fitr. The Outreach Committee is in need of volunteers at various levels to assist by going to old age homes and safe areas to serve these recipients. The aim is to serve the meals with love and affection, hence, making this into an

For those that are interested in volunteering their time and vehicles for this mass feeding scheme are requested to contact the Al Ansaar Foundation.

The Al Ansaar Foundation Disaster Relief Fund is an initiative to collect funds annually during Ramadaan to assist disaster stricken projects and countries. This project has proven to be successful with many donors supporting financially to this fund.
