There is nothing — and we mean nothing — that puts U.S. citizens on the defensive more effectively than being told we have taken — or con-doned — a morally suspect set of ac-
tions. To wit, look at our recalcitrance — collec-tively — to speak of the humanitar-ian crisis at the border a refugee crisis rather than an immigration one, even after the nudging of folks from the United Nations’ High Commissioner on Refugees offi ce.
So, what do we do now that Egypt, China, Russia and Iran (countries whose human rights re-cords we’ve carped about for years) are calling us out for a “racial divide (that) still remains a deeply-rooted chronic disease that keeps tearing U.S. society apart,
just as manifested by the latest racial riot in Mis-souri,” as one Chinese commentary put it? Do we write it off as gleeful table-turning?
No. It is a wake-up call for us to take a hard look at the “us vs. they” narrative that at best dismisses the genuine questions, concerns and
protests of our nation’s “minority” populations and, at worst, answers those concerns, questions and protests with violence.
Across the nation, protesters have adopted a “hands up, don’t shoot” posture and chant, to echo the words 18-year-old Michael Brown allegedly called out, and to imitate the posture he report-edly was in when offi cer Darren Wilson shot him six times. As with the killing of Trayvon Martin, the shooting speaks to the entrenched fear of, and automatic criminalization of, young Black men, especially by law enforcement agents.
The rationalizations and justifi cations for the fatal shooting have already started. We’ve heard reports that Brown taunted Wilson, or that he hit the offi cer; we’ve been told he shoplifted a box of cigars, and that he had been smoking marijua-na. Even if each of those allegations turns out to true, what sort of derangement is required to believe that they justify the “death penalty” they wrought?
The derangement of a racial profi ling so sys-temic, so entrenched, that it fi nds purchase well beyond policing.
The media, for example. The recent AP tweet about verdict in the case
of Renisha McBride’s killer, for example, pos-ited the (white) shooter as a suburban home-owner and the (Black, young woman) victim as a drunk person on his porch — thereby accord-ing respectability to the perpetrator of violence. Violence that, without putting too fi ne a point on it, undoubtedly wouldn’t have happened were it not for McBride’s skin color. (Ditto for Michael Brown and Trayvon Martin and Oscar Grant, and many others.)
About Ferguson, some commentors on social media have noted that the tone of the cover-
age only changed from “them” (the protestors) to “we” when journalists from the mainstream media started being ill-treated and arrested by police as well.
Meantime, Pew Research Center released a report “Stark Racial Divisions in Reactions to Ferguson Police Shooting,” which indicates that while 80 percent of Black Americans believe Brown’s shooting raises racial issues, only 37 percent of white Americans believe it does. Sixty-fi ve percent of Black Americans believe the police have gone too far in their response, while only 33 percent of white Americans do. Meanwhile, of the Latino sampling in the survey, only 18 percent were interested enough to be following the story.
While there are some fl ags in terms of the number of Latinos sampled (small, and afford-ing an 11 point plus/minus margin of error), it is still an indicator that, as Aura Bogado of Colorlines said in her piece about it, “Non-black Latinos have a long way to go in confronting our anti-black biases.” If it is true that we’re not add-ing our voices to those decrying the overzealous policing in Ferguson because of some sense that it is isn’t about “us,” we need to grow up. And step up.
To paraphrase a video commentary writer Solomon Jones did for AL DÍA, we need to unite to demand justice. We need to care about it and be attentive to it. Otherwise, we will surely nev-er experience it.

El superintendente de Filadel-fia William Hite tuvo buenas y malas noticias la semana pasada.
La buena noticia es que las es-cuelas públicas locales comenza-rán clases a tiempo el próximo 8 de septiembre.
Las malas noticias, son mu-chos más recortes.
El 15 de agosto Hite habló so-bre el actual déficit de $81 mi-llones que el Distrito Escolar enfrenta, y a la espera de que legisladores estatales aprueben un impuesto a cigarrillos que proveería fondos, implementará recortes para ahorrar dinero y realizar el menor “daño” posible a los estudiantes y a las escuelas.
“Por el bien de la educación de los niños y para reducir al míni-mo la interrupción de las clases, hemos tomado la decisión de ha-cer una serie de recortes difíciles adicionales —esperemos tempo-rales— con el fin de abrir las es-cuelas a tiempo”, dijo Hite.
Hasta el momento la lista in-cluye a los estudiantes de high school que viven a dos millas de su escuela, los cuales no recibi-rán servicio de transporte, y afec-tará aproximadamente a 7.500 es-tudiantes en escuelas del distrito, charter y escuelas no públicas.
La reducción de servicios en programas de educación alter-nativa, que significará un menor número de opciones de mayor ca-lidad para aproximadamente 300 estudiantes.
Limpieza menos frecuente en las escuelas y un menor número de productos de limpieza y pues-tos vacantes sin ocupar de oficia-les de policía.
También la eliminación de la preparación y el desarrollo pro-fesional, antes del inicio de cla-ses, para maestros de Academias Promesa.
“De retrasar la apertura de las escuelas —tiempo durante el cual el distrito está obligado a se-guir pagando a sus empleados, a hacer pagos a escuelas charter y pagar otros costos del contrato al mismo tiempo que los estudian-tes no están siendo educados— los castiga a causa de fallas de adultos”, dijo Hite.
El superintendente nuevamen-te pidió a varios de los sindicatos de trabajadores del distrito, en-
tre ellos la Federación de Maes-tros de Filadelfia (PFT), hacer concesiones en los beneficios de la salud y a legisladores de Pen-silvania promulgar rápidamente la legislación fiscal de impuestos de cigarrillos, que de ser aproba-da generaría unos $49 millones para el distrito durante el primer año de su implementación.
De no obtener la aprobación para el impuesto de cigarrillos, significarían recortes directos a los presupuestos de las escuelas de mediados de octubre, causan-do el aumento del número de alumnos por clases, y grupos de diferentes grados combinados.
“Imploramos a nuestros le-gisladores estatales promulgar rápidamente el impuesto a los cigarrillos, cada mes que se pos-pone la autorización resulta en la pérdida de millones de dólares de ingresos”, dijo Hite. “También
imploramos a PFT aceptar con-cesiones, no estamos buscando una reducción lineal de los sala-rios, sino cambios que nos per-mitan restablecer los servicios esenciales para las escuelas”.
Por su parte, el presidente del concejo de Filadelfia, Darrell L. Clarke, dijo que la noticia de Hite era poco consuelo.
“Estoy especialmente preocu-pado por los recortes de personal y los servicios de seguridad”, dijo Clarke. “Pero me siento alen-tado por las conversaciones con los líderes de Harrisburg”.
El concejal resaltó que la Cáma-ra de Representantes del estado ya aprobó este ingreso. “Tengo la esperanza de que la Asamblea Ge-neral, comprendiendo la urgen-cia de nuestra situación, dará la aprobación final al impuesto de ci-garrillos este otoño”, dijo Clarke.
Aunque el presidente del con-cejo también reiteró que el im-puesto a los cigarrillos, por sí solo no es una solución al déficit permanente del distrito. “Los desafíos en nuestras aulas son el resultado de años de recortes por parte del Estado, y no van a ser fácilmente solucionados por in-yecciones de efectivo del gobier-no local”.
La Asamblea Estatal reanuda-rá actividades el 15 de septiembre.
“Debemos autorizar de inme-diato el impuestos de $2 a cigarri-llos para reunir estos ingresos. Sin embargo, esto no es sufi-ciente. Los legisladores también deben considerar de inmediato otras opciones para proveer fon-dos para las escuelas de Filadel-fia”, dijo el senador de Pensilva-nia Vincent Hughes.
La organización Philadelphia Coalition Advocating for Public Schools (PCAPS) declaró en un comunicado que se requieren nuevas inversiones para las es-cuelas en base de nuevos ingre-sos.
“La principal causa son los re-cortes brutales del gobernador Tom Corbett y la Asamblea Ge-neral del estado, controlada por los republicanos”, dijo PCAPS. “Corbett recortó mil millones de dólares de las escuelas del estado, y $272 millones solo en Filadelfia.
Entre las soluciones sugeridas por la organización destacan 5 por ciento de impuesto a la extraction de Marcellus Shale; la expasión del Medicaid para residentes de bajos recursos a través de fondos federales y eliminar los benefi-cios fiscales que permiten a gran-des corporaciones evitar pagos.

“¿Quién va a un concierto por la paz con una pistola? ¿Cómo pueden las personas planean un robo en un concierto por la paz?” Esos son sólo dos de las muchas preguntas Dolly Guevara, 23, pregunta sin encontrar respues-ta después de la muerte a tiros de su hermano, Alex en el Dell Music Center después de que este asistiera el 13 de agosto al concierto de paz “Philly Apoya a Philly: Paz en las Calles”.
La víctima, de 20 años de edad, era un ecuatoriano-americano que estaba por entrar al el pro-grama de enfermería en Com-munity College el próximo otoño con el fin de convertirse en un enfermero pediátrico. Él había ido al concierto, según su herma-na, como una muestra de apoyo a la Tynirah Borum, una nena de 3 años de edad, muerta el mes pasado a causa de una bala des-viada.
La policía dio a saber a nom-bre de Alex Guevara el viernes, pero ha dicho que el motivo no ha quedado en claro; que todavía es-tán revisando videos de vigilan-cia y no tienen sospechosos bajo custodia. “En este momento (la policía) no nos ha contactado”, dijo Dolly. “Siento que no están trabajando en esto. No han dicho nada.” La tía de Dolly trabaja en el precinto 22 de policía, dijo Do-lly, pero incluso a ella no se le ha dado información adicional so-bre la investigación.
Aunque la policía aún no ha regresado el cuerpo de Alex a sus padres, Ernesto y Erlanda Guevara, según la hermana Alex recibió un disparo en la espalda en un intento de robo. Dolly no presenció el tiroteo, y está ba-sando su información en el tes-timonio de un amigo que estaba con Alex cuando le dispararon —cuyo nombre no dio a conocer, pero que ella dice que va a tratar de poner en contacto con AL DÍA en el próximas horas.
“Cuando salieron del concierto, había alguien apoyado en el capó delantero (de su coche),” dijo. “Alex le dijo que se moviera, pero entonces otro hombre apareció y apuntó una pistola a la cabeza del amigo (de Alex). Ellos lucharon un poco y Alex golpeó la mano del hombre para quitarle la pistola.” A Alex lo hirieron en el muslo, se-gún el relato de Dolly, pero ambos él y su amigo intentaron huir y a Alex le pegaron otro tiro, esta vez en la espalda, esta vez una herida mortal.
El amigo de Alex, Dolly contó a AL DÍA entre lágrimas, “abrazó a mi ‘baby’ mientras se moría
Dolly y Alex eran muy unidos. Habían vivido juntos en un apar-tamento en la sección de Olney de Filadelfia, pero hace unos me-ses Dolly se mudó fuera del Pen-silvania con su niño, y Alex man-tuvo el apartamento. “Yo sabía que él era una persona responsa-ble que no dejaría que pasara un pago”, dijo ella. “Él era maduro y sabía que era importante tener buen crédito y un buen nombre. Él me dijo: ‘Dolly, soy un hombre, ya estoy crecido.’ “
Alex trabajaba como ‘stock boy’ en la tienda Macy’s. “Alex era un gran chico”, dijo Dolly. “Relajado y leal. Respetuoso. Él tenía un buen corazón. Todo el mundo lo amaba”. No era depor-tista, pero amaba la música y a los animales. Y a los niños tam-bién. “Amaba a mi hijo. Yo solía decirle que sería un buen padre. Quería ir a la enfermería para ayudar a los niños”.
Al igual que muchos jóvenes latinos, Alex comprendía, pero no habla español. Pero él quería aprender. “Solía ir a la tienda de la esquina en nuestro viejo blo-que en Olney”, Dolly recordó, “donde el propietario era su toca-yo. Pero (mi hermano) lo llamaba ‘Papi’. Decía: ‘Papi, quiero que me hables siempre en español, para que lo aprenda.’ “
La ex novia de Alex, Measso-chetra Sem —le dicen Mea— fue su enamaorada desde que tuvie-ran 15 años, pero Dolly dice que los jóvenes se amaron desde que se conocieron a los 6 años. Mea es quien llamó a Dolly en las primeras horas del 14 de agosto para hacerle saber que a Alex le habían disparado y que ya lo habían declarado muerto en el Hospital de la Universidad de Temple.
Sem, quien es camboyana-americana, escuchó por primera vez el rumor de que a Alex estaba herido, o tal vez muerto, alrede-
dor de las 8:30 la mañana del jue-ves, en camino a su trabajo como técnica de farmacia. Al principio no lo creía, pero después de ir al barrio y preguntar por allí, se alarmó lo suficiente para ir con sus hermanas a Temple Univer-sity Hospital para ver si podían obtener alguna información acerca de si el joven en los noti-cieros era Alex.
Allí, un miembro del personal le dijo que no podían dar a cono-cer ninguna información acerca de la victima del incidente del Dell Center, pero Sem imploró. Enumeró los tatuajes inusuales Guevara tenía —uno detrás de
la oreja y otro en la muñeca, por ejemplo— con la esperanza de que ella se le dijiera a la descrip-ción no coincidía. Pero no fue tan afortunada.
“Yo estaba en shock”, dijo. “Alex no era del tipo que se me-tía en lios.”
Sem empezó a llorar mientras hablaba con AL DÍA. “Lo extra-ño. Lo echo de menos. Quisiera haberle dicho eso antes que se muriera. Quisiera haberle dicho que a pesar de que ya no eramos novios, yo todavía lo amaba”.
Desde que llegó a Filadelfia, Dolly ha sido la que se ha encar-
gado de los detalles relacionados con la muerte de su hermano. “Soy una madre, y ya me imagi-no lo que mi madre está pasan-do”, dijo ella. “Yo soy la que está más tranquila”. Creó una página gofundme (http://www.gofund-me.com/d1s9ek) para ayudar a pagar los gastos del funeral, y fue ella quien contactó a AL DÍA con la esperanza de que al hacerlo la policía soltaría el video de vigi-lancia del incidente.
“Me dijeron que un video de vigilancia del cómplice está dis-ponible,” dijo. “Mi familia no puede entender por qué no lo han dado a conocer ni por qué no han arrestado al culpable. Por eso, mi familia no puede pasar página”.
El amigo que acompañó a Guevara al concierto en el Dell Center, Marcell Lawrence, dice tampoco comprender por qué la policia no ha soltado más infor-mación. (Lea el relato de Lawren-ce en aldianews.com).
La policía publicó a una foto de uno de los dos presuntos asal-tantes el lunes 18 de agosto. Sem lo ha visto, pero siente que el video completo tendría más im-pacto.
“Nuestra generación, noso-tros creemos en el ‘no rats, no snitch’”, dijo. “Pero yo digo: imagine que esto le pasara a al-guien de su familia ... Hay que presentarse y hacer lo correcto”.

Mientras que la Arquidiócesis de Filadelfi a hasta ahora no ha po-dido confi rmar ofi cialmente que el papa Francisco visitará la ciudad en el 2015, el pontífi ce confi rmó que está considerando un tour por tres ciudades de Estados Unidos, una de ellas Filadelfi a.
“El año que viene me gustaría ir a Filadelfi a para el ‘Encuentro Mundial de las Familias’. Fui invi-tado por el presidente de Estados Unidos, por el parlamento esta-dounidense y el secretario general de las Naciones Unidas”, dijo el papa el pasado 18 de agosto.
Además de Filadelfi a, la visita podría incluir a las Naciones Uni-das, en Nueva York, y el Congreso de Estados Unidos en Washington D.C.
Ese mismo día, el papa también hizo declaraciones sobre la beati-fi cación del arzobispo Oscar Ar-nulfo Romero, asesinado en 1980
en El Salvador.En vida, el arzobispo luchó por
los derechos humanos, y denunció la pobreza entre los salvadoreños, además de los abusos cometidos por las autoridades militares de la época.
Romero fue asesinado de un dis-paro por un francotirador desco-nocido cuando ofi ciaba misa en la capilla del hospital para enfermos de cáncer La Divina Providencia de San Salvador el 24 de marzo de 1980, en plena guerra civil que se prolongó hasta 1992.
El proceso de beatifi cación de Romero se abrió en el Vaticano en 1994 y, tras un período de estanca-miento, fue reactivado en 2013 por el papa Francisco.
El pontífi ce dijo que el caso de Romero había sido “demorado por prudencia” pero que “es im-portante que el tema avance rá-pidamente”, aunque enfatizó que el proceso debe cumplir con sus requisitos.

AL DÍA NEWSLa nueva plaza Dilworth, en
la alcaldía de Filadelfia, será abierta al público el próximo 4 de septiembre, luego de un largo y costoso proceso de remodelación de más de dos años y 55 millones de dólares.
Entre las últimas noticias, la plaza, que de ahora en adelante será llamada “Dilworth Park” de-bido a sus espacios verdes, conta-rá con un café al aire libre del chef superestrella José Garcés.
El “Iron Chef” abrirá ahí otra sucursal de su restaurante cuba-no Rosa Blanca —originalmente ubicado en las calles 7 y Market.
Además de los sandwiches cu-banos de puerco asado, jamón ahumado, queso suizo, mostaza y pepinillos, Rosa Blanca servirá
una variedad de mojitos y de dis-tintos tipos de ron.
Por un lado, el nuevo espacio público contará con unas estruc-turas de vidrió que servirán como distintivos puntos de acceso y con elevadores al subterráneo del me-tro, mientras que el área desig-nada para el servicio de ‘trolleys’ contará con paneles de LCD que mostrarán información en tiem-po real sobre las líneas que dan servicio a West Philly.
Por el otro, será un punto de en-cuentro debido a una programa-ción continua de eventos y servirá como centro de información sobre las atracciones de Filadelfia.
Luego de la inauguración, que será llevada a cabo por el alcal-de Michael Nutter, en conjunto con funcionarios de Center City
District, la nueva plaza será esce-nario de diversas celebraciones. Entre ellas, un festival comunita-rio de arte y cultura con talento local el mismo jueves; un picnic el viernes, con comida a la venta desde el mediodía y bebidas alco-hólicas de 5:00 a 7:00 p.m.; y un evento familiar pensado en los más pequeños el sábado.
Los eventos inaugurales son solo un ejemplo de los otros que se llevarán a cabo durante todo el año en este espacio público que contará con una pista de patinaje
sobre hielo durante el invierno. El 85 a 90 por ciento de la su-
perficie de la nueva plaza esta-rá completada para el día de la inauguración, incluyendo una fuente de 11.600 pies cuadrados programada por computadora y abastecida con agua reciclada de lluvia. El resto será finalizado para mediados de octubre.

En un mundo imagina-rio, si los jugadores de videojuegos solo tuvie-ran la opción de jugar con personajes de su
misma etnia, los latinos estarían jodidos.
Podrían elegir entre Victor González, uno de los principales matones de ‘Los carnales’ que ha
sobrevivido una decena de ata-ques de los Vice King. O un más sofi sticado Carlos Oliveira, un mercenario de Suramérica que ha estado al borde de un ataque de nervios durante el esparcimiento de la crisis de los zombies por la Tierra.
Estos dos poco atractivos ejem-plos forman parte del 3 por ciento de personajes considerados lati-nos que conforman la industria
de videojuegos.Que por ciento, menos del 5 por
ciento son realmente utilizables durante el juego, según el estudio ‘The virtual census: representa-tions of gender, race and age in video games’.
Los números son deprimentes y la variedad de personalidades cuestionable. Pero a pesar de la aparente apatía por parte de la in-
dustria, en los últimos años estu-dios han evidenciado el creciente interés del mercado latino en la compra y expansión de sistemas de juegos de video, resultados que la industria ha comenzado a notar.
De acuerdo a un estudio de Sim-mons, 32 por ciento de latinos es más propenso, en comparación a no-latinos, a considerar a los vi-deojuegos su principal fuente de entretenimiento. También publi-có que el 54 por ciento de latinos son más propensos a comprar un videojuego el día de su lanza-miento, en comparación a otros grupos.

latinos crecieron 23 por ciento, mientras que las de otros grupos solo aumentaron 10 por ciento.
Ese mismo año los juegos de video ocuparon el primer lugar en el listado de juguetes adqui-ridos por latinos, un total de 7,8 millones de latinos adquirieron uno.
“La industria debería poner más atención al mercado latino pero muchas compañías no lo hacen. Muchas empresas cuen-tan con equipos que se encar-gan de atender a Latinoamérica como mercado, pero se olvidan del mercado latino en Estados Unidos, que tiene mucho más po-der adquisitivo que muchos paí-ses de Latinoamérica”, dijo Juan Carlos Alanis, creador del portal TECHnotas.com y del blog Lati-noGamers.com.
“La respuesta ha sido excelen-te. Ambos proyectos nacieron de mi gusto por la tecnología y los juegos de video, desarrollé ambos blogs como una forma de expresión que comencé como hobby y está llegando cada vez a más gente que comparte mi pa-sión”, dijo Alanis.

hijos a la hora de elegir video-juegos, además está la oportuni-dad de servir a una comunidad donde la información en español es realmente limitada o no esta pensada en el latino de Estados Unidos”, dijo Alanis.
Para el bloguero, los latinos son tan fanáticos como cualquier otro grupo étnico.
“Uno pensaría que los gigantes de la industria saben esto, pero realmente parece que ignoran la realidad de la sociedad y del con-sumo latino en Estados Unidos”, dijo Alanis. “Pocas compañías, entre ellas Nintendo y Xbox, tie-nen personal dedicado a nuestra comunidad y usuarios, pero la gran mayoría de compañías que fabrican videojuegos simple-mente no invierten en nuestra comunidad”.
¿Una oportunidad perdida para los niños latinos?
A pesar de la poca representa-ción de minorías en los videojue-gos, los niños latinos y afroame-ricanos son los que más tiempo invierten en las consolas de vi-deojuegos.
“Realmente no tienen la opor-tunidad de jugar con personajes en los que se reflejen. Esto pue-de afectar a la generación más joven, ya que se ha sugerido que los videojuegos pueden ser claves en el interés hacia la tecnología, que a su vez, se traduce en carre-ras profesionales en matemáti-
cas y campos relacionados con la ciencia”, dijo a Voxxi Dmitri Wi-lliams, psicólogo social y profe-sor asistente en USC Annenberg School for Communication.
Mientras que los juegos digi-tales están lejos de reemplazar a los maestros en las aulas, exper-tos en tecnología aseguran que son herramientas que pueden ayudar a realizar el trabajo con mayor eficacia.
“Los videojuegos pueden ser indicativos de un cambio en la forma en que construimos la na-rrativa. Un buen argumento po-dría ser que los videojuegos pro-veen una especie de narración interactiva no lineal que puede dar forma a las actitudes de la ge-neración actual”, explica Jordan Shapiro en el blog MindShift’s Guide to Games and Learning.
“El aprendizaje basado en vi-deojuegos y medios electrónicos nos permite eliminar los límites que separan la entrega de infor-mación, de la práctica y evalua-ción. Sería un ambiente educativo en el que esas fronteras se disolve-rían, y el libro de texto se volvería obsoleto”, agregó Shapiro.
El escritor y diseñador gráfico Carlos Hernández también cree en el poder educacional de los vi-deojuegos.
“Soy un gran aficionado ‘ga-mer’ pero también soy educador. Uno de los campos emergentes
que me interesan son las clases de ‘Game Base Learning’, en las que los profesores utilizan los métodos con los que se desarro-llan los videojuegos y los impor-tan al aprendizaje durante la cla-se”, dijo Hernández, profesor de inglés en Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC).
Hernández participó como es-critor principal del videojuego ‘Meriwether’, basado en la expe-dición de Lewis y Clark. Según el cubanoamericano, el proyecto cuenta con contenido histórico/educativo a la par que promete mucha diversión. “Tuve bajo mi responsabilidad tanto la trama como los diálogos. Habrá mucho ‘role play’ entre los personajes del juego, solo el diálogo reunió unas 100.000 palabras, casi del ta-maño de una novela”.
Nacido en Illinois, su relación con los videojuegos ha sido conti-nua desde los 4 años. Hernández tuvo la oportunidad de experi-mentar el nacimiento oficial de los videojuegos en la década de los setenta, primero a través del icónico Pong (1972), uno de los primeros juegos en ‘arcades’, y siguiendo con el Atari 2600 (1977).
“Es increíble pensar qué tan exitosos fueron porque también eran extremadamente sencillos. Pong es el sistema que lanzó el Atari, mi generación en sí tuvo la oportunidad de ver el nacimien-to de una forma de arte emergen-
te. El videojuego no solo cambió la forma en que experimentamos diferentes tipos de historias, sino también la forma en que en que vivimos el entretenimiento”, dijo Hernandez.

Entre la extensa gama de con-tenido para videojuegos ha ha-bido algunos que quedan en el extremo de lo políticamente in-correcto.
Entre ellos ‘Spanish for Ever-yone’ (2007), en el que un nuevo amigo mexicano te pide prestado tu Nintendo DS para luego huir con él al sur de la frontera, y para recuperarlo debes cruzar hacia México y encontrar al “ladrón”.
Hasta el controversial ‘Border Patrol’ (2002), que te permite ma-tar mexicanos tratando de cru-zar hacia Estados Unidos.
“Cuando vemos a personajes latinos usualmente tienen este-reotipos extremos, por ejemplo un acento notorio. Pero esto es un fenómeno para cualquier per-sonaje no-caucásico”, dijo Her-nández.
Agregó que comúnmente los jugadores solo tienen la opción de utilizar un solo personaje, específicamente, un hombre blanco. “Es desafortunado que la industria es mayormente blanca
y masculina. Pero creo que en cada forma de arte se está simpli-ficando la vida, es la descripción de una sociedad que implica una tercera dimensión. Esas simpli-ficaciones pueden conducir a representaciones pobres, como sucede cuando los videojuegos dependen de los estereotipos para la caracterización. Pero todo el arte corre ese peligro por su propia naturaleza”.
Hernández dijo que se siente muy optimista sobre el creci-miento de minorías y su repre-sentación en la industria.
“No podemos contar con un solo personaje latino, lo que ne-cesitamos es crear una cultura en la que sea natural contar con una amplía gama de personajes latinos, con muchos orígenes y experiencias”, dijo Hernandez.
Por su parte, Alanis opinó que gracias a que la industria ha cre-cido globalmente, esto ha dado pie para tener un mayor balance en cuanto a diversidad.
“Desgraciadamente en los vi-deojuegos pasa lo mismo que en Hollywood y sus producciones. Los clichés y desinformación eran la norma”, dijo Alanis. “Creo que más que una intención
de ofender, el error de los creado-res es la omisión en la inclusión de la diversidad en los persona-jes de los videojuegos”.
El bloguero agregó que hace algunos años era imposible en-contrar personajes de diferentes etnias, o inclusive, mujeres como protagonistas en los videojuegos. “Pero poco a poco esto está cam-biando, aunque claro que falta mu-cho por hacer. Muchas de las com-pañías han entendido esto y están integrando más diversidad en sus historias, ahora es posible encon-trar personajes de varias etnias en las historias, también del sexo fe-menino y de la comunidad LGBT”.
Las ‘gamers’ ya no pueden ser ignoradas
Otro grupo minoritario
de seguimiento asiduo pero con poca representación dentro y fuera de la industria, es el de las mujeres.
“Yo he vivido de primera mano el estereotipo de las mujeres en videojuegos. Usualmente los ju-gadores de entre 20 y 30 años se piensa que han estado jugando desde el primer día, y que por eso también son mucho mejores a la hora de jugar”, dijo Gabbie Arias, una ‘gamer’ mexicoameri-cana de California.

“Muchas veces las jugadoras no quieren que otros se enteren que son mujeres para evitar co-mentarios. Yo usualmente me espero un rato y después les menciono que soy mujer, luego se sorprenden y automáticamen-te cambian su perspectiva. Asu-men que las mujeres únicamente juegan bajo ciertas reglas o per-sonajes”.
Arias ha jugado World of War-craft desde el 2007 jugando hasta ocho horas diarias, cantidad que con los años ha disminuido a cin-co horas, dos veces a la semana. “Pero en los fi nes de semana no me puedes ni hablar porque es-toy jugando todo el día”.
Para Arias los videojuegos son mucho más que un hobby. Hace algunos años fue diagnosticada con lupus, enfermedad que afec-ta al sistema inmunológico, y la practica de los juegos de video le ha permitido conllevar los retos de esta enfermedad.
“Me han permitido tomar las cosas con calma y relajarme. También sacar mis frustraciones después de haber tenido un mal día con el lupus”, agregó.
Arias forma parte del 48 por ciento de mujeres ‘gamers’ en Estados Unidos, grupo que por mucho tiempo ha luchado por mayor representación en canti-
dad y calidad.Uno de los nombres latinos
más activos en la red es la blo-guera boricua María Vargas, aka ‘la chica gamer’, afi cionada por excelencia de todo lo relacionado a videojuegos y tecnología.
“Primero iba a tener mi blog en inglés. Pero cuando traté de encontrar a otras ‘gamers’ que escribieran en español sobre videojuegos no encontré abso-lutamente nada. Eso fue lo que me hizo elegir el español para publicar en http://lachicagamer.com”, dijo Vargas.
Su blog combina noticias, rese-ñas, información de cómics y de cine. Además de adelantos y da-tos sobre XBOX, PC, Playstation y WII U.
“En la industria la gran mayo-ría son hombres. En mi propia experiencia el número de muje-res que escribimos sobre video-juegos lo puedo contar con mis dedos y me sobran”, dijo Vargas.
‘La chica gamer’ admitió que siempre ha tenido una guerra con la manera en que las mujeres son presentadas en los videojue-gos, siempre con muy poca ropa y dimensiones poco reales.
“Mi personaje femenino ideal sería como cualquier personaje masculino, sencillo que sepa pe-lear, pero vestida apropiadamen-te. Luchadora e inteligente...y si es latina mucho mejor”, dijo Vargas.

The Huffi ngton Post publicó un artículo sobre esta “nueva ten-dencia”. ‘Hackers’ modifi caron el código del videojuego para que jugadores puedan “abusar sexual-mente” de avatares controlados por otras personas jugando en lí-nea, y después publicar los videos de sus ataques en YouTube.
Estas recientes agresiones se-xuales en línea fueron conectadas a un incidente anterior ocurrido en marzo, cuando la escritora de videojuegos Kim Correa describió en el web de onthemedia.org, cómo fue “prácticamente” violada mientras participaba en el juego
de zombies DayZ.“Uno de ellos comentó sobre
el hecho de que yo era mujer. Me estaba apuntando con un arma en la cara. Hice un ruido de disgus-to en mi micrófono y comencé a alejarme, y dijo que su amigo no estaba seguro si me mataría o no. Lo llamé un cachorro enfermo. Dijo que por desgracia para mí, le gustaba la necrofi lia, y que quería violar mi cuerpo una vez muerto, y entonces me disparó”.
“Defi nitivamente no quiero decir que lo que me pasó, verbalmente, es tan importante como sí hubiera sucedido en la vida real,” dijo Co-rrea en una entrevista para WNYC.
Tal como lo explicó Kat Stoeffel, en NYMag.com, “los videojuegos ofrecen a ‘nerds’ escuálidos una realidad alternativa en la que pue-den matar zombis con hachas y
robar coches. Las mujeres pueden hacer todo eso, también. Pero, de igual manera, van a seguir siendo mujeres: vulnerables de más e in-necesariamente sexualizadas. Lo cual se siente muy parecido a la vida real”.
Por su parte, la bloguera de vi-deojuegos boricua María Vargas, dijo que este tipo de incidentes se deben de evitar a cualquier costa.
“Es muy triste que jugadores lle-guen a estos extremos, haciendo que las mujeres perdamos el in-terés en buenos títulos para evitar ser atacadas ‘online’”, dijo Vargas.
“Nosotras no debemos ser ata-cadas simplemente por nuestro género. Siento mucho que varios jugadores decidan arruinar un rato de ‘gaming’ que nosotras simple-mente queremos disfrutar para re-lajarnos un rato”, dijo Vargas.

Lejos del bling bling, el sexis-mo y el materialismo aspi-racional del hip hop, en la escena de la música latina al-ternativa se abre paso Olme-
ca, un artista chicano de Los Ángeles cuya consciencia social se refl eja en su más reciente álbum “Brown is Beauti-ful”, y cuya música es una extensión de su trabajo como activista.
Mientras que en la Costa Oeste, él es bien conocido y ha colaborado con di-versos artistas similares, como Irene Diaz, Chicano Batman o ‘La Marisoul’ de La Santa Cecilia, su participación este año en el Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) en Nueva York le abrió las puertas a una audiencia más amplía y le valió el reconocimiento del programa de NPR Alt.Latino como uno de los descubrimientos musicales de este año.
Su nombre verdadero es David Ba-rragán, pero hasta su familia lo llama Olmeca.
Hijo de inmigrantes mexicanos, cuenta con un largo historial trabajan-do en organizaciones comunitarias por los derechos humanos, lo que así como su música, le ha válido la admiración de fi guras como Dolores Huerta.
“Para mi la música y el contenido es lo más importante como MC”, dijo Ol-meca a AL DÍA. “La fundación del hip hop tiene que ser la voz del pueblo y lo que está sucediendo”.
Es por eso que considera este género como un refl ejo de nuestros tiempos y a sí mismo como un vocero.
En el disco que promociona ac-tualmente destacan canciones como “Browning of America”, en la que ce-lebra la lucha, las contribuciones y la cultura mexicoamerica y latina:

siderada como hip hop, sus presenta-ciones cuentan con un público diverso ya que este género se presta para mez-clarlo con otros más.
En sus shows lo mismo se pueden ver ‘punk rockers’ que ‘hip hoppers’, y lo mismo se puede escuchar música electrónica que ‘samples’ de Mercedes Sosa, Los Bukis, Los Temerarios, Bron-co o Los Tigres del Norte.
En fi n, música para una nueva gene-ración pero con un toque de nostalgia, una mezcla de música latinoamericana con las últimas tendencias, como mu-cha de la música producida actualmen-te por artistas latinos en Los Ángeles, la cual también se caracteriza por su tono activista.
“Lo que sucede en Los Ángeles es bien particular. La raíz de la música muchas veces viene de la misma co-munidad”, dijo Olmeca. “Es una cues-tión cultural que siempre ha existido, y una vez que uno empieza a hablar de la cultura, se mete en la política y el activismo”.

ra que Hollywood debe “actua-lizarse” y poner a los latinos en el lugar que se merecen en los carteles de los grandes estrenos, tanto por su población como por su elevada presencia en las salas de cine.
“La realidad es que a Ho-llywood le toma algunos años actualizarse. Lo mismo que está pasando con los hispanos pasó con las mujeres. Actualmente Hollywood apenas está comen-zando a entender que una mu-jer puede ser la fi gura principal en una película, y que puede ser una superhéroe, lo mismo que un hombre”, dijo Fox.
Un reciente estudio de la Uni-versidad del Sur de California (USC) apuntó que apenas el 4,9 por ciento de los actores de las producciones más taquilleras de 2013 era latino, a pesar de que los hispanos compran el 25 por cien-to de todos los boletos de cine en el mercado estadounidense.
Si se toma en cuenta que los latinos constituyen el 17 por ciento de la población de la na-ción, estas cifras demuestran la desconexión que existe entre Hollywood y el público hispano. Según Fox, esto no es de sorpren-der, ya que es parte del “típico proceso ‘hollywoodense’”.
En su opinión, hay que tener “paciencia” con Hollywood, aun-que se mostró confi ada en que los grandes estudios enmenda-rán esta situación: “Denle unos años más y se pondrá al día con los latinos”.
La bella actriz, de 28 años, for-ma parte del elenco de “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”, que en su primer fi n de semana en car-tel contó con un 36 por ciento de presencia latina en la taquilla, lo cual ayudó a colocarla en el tope de la lista de las diez más popula-res del país.
Esto no sorprendió a Fox, que interpreta a la intrépida repor-tera April en este fi lme de Para-mount, pues “los latinos tienen un gran sentido del humor. Hay culturas que no aprecian esta clase de comedia, pero yo siento que los hispanos sí la entienden
y la disfrutan”.Pero si Hollywood no reconoce
del todo la presencia latina, Fox sí se confi esa una gran admira-dora de los directores latinoame-ricanos que triunfan en la meca del cine, como los mexicanos Guillermo del Toro y Alejandro González Iñárritu o el texano Ro-bert Rodríguez.
“Los directores de otras cul-turas traen una nueva visión a la mesa; tienen una sensibilidad diferente y cuentan otras his-torias. Me fascinaría trabajar con cualquiera de ellos, porque siento que sería una experiencia diferente y realmente enriquece-dora”, señaló.
Pero la actriz del éxito taqui-llero “Transformers” (2007) tuvo
palabras especiales para el reali-zador español Pedro Almodóvar, con el que, confesó, adoraría ac-tuar bajo su dirección.
“En el caso de Almodóvar, por ejemplo, hay una estética visual única que me encantaría explo-rar”, afi rmó Fox, que comenzó su carrera interpretativa en 2001 con varios roles secundarios en cine y televisión.
Casada con el actor Brian Aus-tin Green, que se dio a conocer en la popular serie de TV “Beverly Hills 90210” (1990-2000), Fox tiene dos hijos, Noah Shannon y Bodhi Ramsom. Aparte de su familia y la actuación, su otra pasión es la labor fi lantrópica. Actualmen-te, se dispone a lanzar “Charity Water”, un agua embotellada que venderá con fi nes benéfi cos y cuyas ganancias serviran para abrir pozos de agua potable en África.

lo Claure tomó cargo como CEO de Sprint, la tercer compañía celular más grande de EE.UU.
En entrevista con NBC News, Ja-vier Palomarez, presidente de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana de EE.UU., habló sobre las implicacio-nes de la contratación de Claure para los latinos.
“Si ves el uso de tecnología Mobil y servicio celular entre la comunidad hispana, superamos el índex en com-paración con cualquier otra demogra-fía... Así que aquí está este mercado fl oreciente, $1,4 billones de poder adquisitivo ... es un mercado más jo-ven, que está creciendo en términos de ingresos y poder adquisitivo a una velocidad dos veces más rápida que el mercado general ... así que mientras el resto del mercado se está tornando gris, este mercado se está consolidan-do y ahora tienes en el timón de la ter-cera compañía más grande de teleco-municaciones del país a un latino que entiende esta dinámica”.

chos Humanos de los Inmigran-tes de Los Ángeles (CHIRLA) señaló que la puesta en vigor de la Acción Diferida, ha dado a la economía del país 4.240 millo-nes de dólares.
Según un informe presenta-do este viernes por CHIRLA, la Acción Diferida para los Llega-dos en la Infancia (DACA), que este viernes cumplió dos años de ser implementada, permitió a su vez una ganancia en im-puestos cercana a los 550 millo-nes de dólares por cada año.
De acuerdo al análisis de esta coalición, en la que también participaron especialistas de la Universidad de Graduados Cla-remont, el promedio de diferen-cia de ingreso lograda gracias a la obtención del DACA fue de 7.444 dólares al cabo de dos años.
Esta cifra, multiplicada por los más de 569.000 solicitantes de la Acción Diferida que han visto aprobado su expediente, representa un ingreso a la eco-nomía del país de más de 4.200 millones de dólares anuales.
Además, las tarifas de solici-
tud pagadas por las solicitudes aprobadas aportaron casi 280 millones de dólares, con lo que si el total de estos benefi ciarios renuevan su permiso, repre-sentará para el país una cifra semejante adicional.

Castro como secretario del De-partamento de Vivienda y Desa-rrollo Urbano (HUD) de EE.UU., quedó ofi cializado el pasado 18 de agosto mientras continúan los rumores sobre sus aspiraciones vicepresidenciales.
Tres semanas después de ha-ber tomado posesión del cargo, Castro hizo su juramento en una ceremonia ofi ciada por el vice-presidente Joe Biden en el edifi -cio Eisenhower, aledaño a la Casa Blanca.
El exalcalde de San Antonio, Texas, fue acompañado por su esposa, Erica, su hija Carina, su hermano gemelo, el congresista Joaquín Castro, además de sus padres.
Desde que Castro fue nominado por el presidente Barack Obama como secretario de vivienda en mayo pasado, han aumentado las especulaciones sobre la posibili-dad de que llegue a ser el candida-to demócrata a la vicepresidencia en 2016.
Los rumores se han intensi-fi cado desde la semana pasada, cuando Hillary Rodham Clinton, la gran favorita como candidata presidencial demócrata, y su es-poso, el expresidente Bill Clinton, invitaron a Castro a cenar a su casa en Washington.
Clinton podría enfrentar pre-sión de tener un compañero de
formula latino tomando en cuen-ta que el partido republicano po-dría nominar a dos hispanos, los senadores Marco Rubio, de Flori-da, y Ted Cruz, de Texas.
Pero por ahora Castro insiste que su único objetivo es centrarse en su trabajo como secretario de vivienda.
Entre los retos que enfrenta aho-ra está el supervisar un mercado
inmobiliario aún en recuperación, hacer frente a las disparidades del sistema hipotecario y a la alta tasa de ejecuciones hipotecarias.
También decidir sobre el fu-turo de los bancos hipotecarios rescatados Fannie Mae y Freddie Mac, que el Gobierno de Obama y muchos legisladores han abogado por reemplazar con un nuevo sis-tema de garantías hipotecarias.

El verano es una temporada lenta en la municipalidad. El Consejo municipal no
está reunido; menos personas se toman la molestia de visitar al Registrador de instrumentos públicos (Registrar of Deeds); y me gusta pensar que las parejas jóvenes se encuentran en la pla-ya en vez de estar paseando por los pasillos del Registro Civil en busca de la oficina donde se ob-tiene la licencia para contraer matrimonio.
Es un excelente momento para probar cosas nuevas. Así que nos llevamos a nuestra oficina de gira, un día durante cada se-mana, para visitar las calles de vecindario con muchas tiendas y pedirles a los comercios locales que ayudaran a promover la vo-tación. Hubo muchas sorpresas.
La primera de ellas fue la ama-ble acogida de los comercios. Lle-vamos formularios de registro y formularios para solicitar el voto por correo (nunca es demasiado temprano para solicitar el voto por correo para las si-guientes elecciones). Les pedimos a los comercios que se quedaran con algunos y que nos in-formaran cuando ya no tuvieran. Anticipába-mos que tendríamos que vender la idea de que: las escuelas buenas, calles limpias y bajo grado de criminalidad son buenos para los co-mercios del vecindario, y la participación electoral alta atrae los recursos que conducen a las escuelas buenas, calles lim-

Una lección de un estudio STEM

De vez en cuanto, las inves-tigaciones cuantifican los efectos, en los estudiantes,
de ciertas políticas educativas. Más tarde, se suelen archivar los resultados a favor del “sentido común” predominante. Por ejem-plo: Si uno quiere más científi-cos, que se requieran más cursos de Ciencias en las escuelas.
Esperemos que no ocurra lo mismo con “Missing the Mark”, un informe de la división de In-vestigaciones y Políticas de ACT, el examen para evaluar la pre-paración para ingresar a la uni-versidad. Los autores Richard Buddin y Michelle Croft estudia-ron a los graduados de la escuela secundaria entre 2005 y 2013, en Illinois (excluyendo Chicago), que se vieron afectadas por una ley del estado que exigía un mí-nimo de tres años de Matemática y de dos años de Ciencias para graduarse.
Antes de la reforma, alrededor del 23 por ciento de los distritos escolares de Illinois requerían tres años de Matemática, mien-tras el 75 por ciento requería dos años de Ciencias. Los inves-tigadores pudieron comparar los distritos afectados por la ley nueva con los que ya tenían esos requisitos.
Para 2013, Buddin y Croft ha-llaron que la ley estrechaba la
brecha de los alumnos que toma-ron cursos de Ciencias en un 50 por ciento, pero que tuvo poco efecto en los que tomaban cur-sos de Matemática. Y el requisito también tuvo poco impacto en los resultados del examen ACT de preparación para la universi-dad, tanto en Matemática como en Ciencias.
Aunque los estudiantes de la mitad inferior de sus clases to-maron más cursos de Ciencias, ese hecho no modificó la inscrip-ción universitaria.
“Los resultados sugieren que los cursos más avanzados por sí solos no mejoran el aprendizaje de los estudiantes ni su asisten-cia a la universidad,” dijo Scott Montgomery, vicepresidente de políticas, incidencia y relacio-nes gubernamentales de ACT. “La mayoría de los estudiantes requerirá una preparación más intensiva para cursos avanza-dos o cursos más adaptados a sus necesidades de aprendizaje. Además, los estudiantes de bajo rendimiento a para tomar cursos más avanzados y tener éxito en ellos.”
Como siempre, hay diversos aspectos en la historia. Una de las advertencias sobre el estudio es que examinó los resultados sólo sobre la base de los cambios en el número de cursos toma-

y los cursos como manera de lo-grar que los estudiantes escojan carreras en Matemática y Cien-cias”, dijo Christopher Emdin, profesor en Teachers College of Columbia University y autor de “Urban Science Education for the Hip-Hop Generation.”
“Pero fundamentalmente sa-bemos que dictar más cursos de la misma manera en que siempre se han enseñado no aumenta-rá la persistencia ni afectará la elección de una carrera,” me dijo Emdin. “Existe una brecha en la naturaleza del instructor y no en la disponibilidad del curso”.
Emdin cree que los maestros actuales de STEM y los que se están capacitando necesitan en-trenamiento y mentores para poder enseñar, motivar y lograr la comprensión del material por parte de los alumnos, en lugar de tomar el curso sólo por la califi-cación.
Emdin dice que debido a que es más probable que los estudian-tes persistan en cursos relacio-nados a las Humanidades, este enfoque abre una oportunidad para comprender la complejidad de las Ciencias y de la Matemá-tica enfocándolas en el arte y la creatividad, la comunicación y la sensibilidad científica, en lu-gar de conocer, simplemente, el contenido.
“Si somos eficaces en la ins-trucción del contenido en clases básicas, es más probable lograr que los estudiantes voluntaria-mente tomen cursos avanzados de Matemática y Ciencias y has-ta de motivarlos para que los con-sideren como posibles carreras que les están abiertas”, dijo Em-din. “Tal y como son las cosas, los muchachos que ya se dirigen a la universidad cumplen con los requisitos necesarios, pero no entran en áreas de STEM. Peor aún, para los que son los prime-ros de su familia en ir a la univer-sidad, [los estándares más eleva-dos colocan] más obstáculos en su camino, dificultando su pro-greso y creando una mayor alie-nación de dichas disciplinas”.
Siempre habrá estudiantes que “comprendan” la Matemá-tica y las Ciencias y que no ne-cesiten clases especiales para desarrollar su auto-identifica-ción con las disciplinas. Para el resto, una revisión de los métodos pedagógicos que incul-que la maravilla, la belleza y la utilidad de la Matemática y las Ciencias es necesaria, si desea-mos que más niños persigan ca-rreras STEM.

No se midió la calidad ni el contenido de los cursos, antes y después de que se evaluara la promulgación de la ley --una va-riable importante que merece su propia evaluación en la ecuación aún en desarrollo para lograr que los estudiantes sigan carre-ras en el grupo STEM (Ciencias, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Mate-mática).
“Obviamente, Illinois tiene buenas intenciones en el proceso de elevar los estándares, el rigor
pias y bajo grado de criminalidad. La consideración de los propieta-rios y gerentes probablemente no debió sorprendernos—operar un pequeño comercio exitoso no es fácil. Pero sí nos sorprendió.
Otra sorpresa fue lo difícil que fue predecir cuáles comercios se uni-rían con entusiasmo a este esfuerzo, habiendo ya comprendido la im-portación de votar. Mi personal y yo nos detu-vimos ante la puerta de un salón para tatuajes y piercing en Kensignton Avenue. No obstante, el salón de tatuajes, junto
con un lugar para cambiar che-ques en Germantown, son los que más han movido los formularios de registro.
El número de idiomas fue sor-prendente: en un día escuchamos inglés y español, por supuesto, pero también vietnamita, corea-no, chino y unos cuantos otros. Y había una variedad de comercios con una variedad de mercadería. Pez halal, zapatos deportivos amarillo vivo, candelas milagro-sas. Y ¿me atrevo a mencionar la joyería sin joyas en las estan-terías, en la que el personal y la clientela parecían ansiosos de que quienes parecíamos funcio-narios saliéramos de allí?
Pensándolo bien, dejar for-mularios de registro para los electores y para solicitar el voto por correo en los comercios tiene sentido. Los formularios solían estar disponibles en las biblio-tecas, pero ahora el horario está restringido. Los ciudadanos fie-
les solían sentarse en la esqui-na durante los días agradables y registrar a los vecinos, pero el temor al crimen los disuade en muchas partes de Filadelfia. Se-ría maravilloso ver a los comer-cios en todas partes surtiendo formularios, sin mencionar in-formación sobre las votaciones y anuncios sobre las elecciones.
Este proyecto de verano abrió la puerta a muchas posibilida-des, y suscita una pregunta im-portante: ¿Dónde debo colocar ese tatuaje de “SuperElector”?

La autoridad del transporte del sudeste de Pennsylvania (SEPTA) conducirá una audiencia pública con respecto a cambios propuestos para rutas de autobuses en la Ciudad y Suburbios.
PROPUESTALos cambios propuestos a las tarifas intentarán hacer permanentes los cambios experimentales en diversas rutas como la
L, 30, 47, 52, 57, 92, 96, 99, 111, 118 y siete rutas de la serie 400La implementación de los proyectos recomendados procederán hasta que finalice el resultado del proceso de vistas públicas,
la aprobación del consejo de SEPTA y del financiamiento disponible. RUTA 30
En julio de 2012, el distrito de University City creó una plaza peatonal usando la isla concreta existente situada en la intersección de la calle 42 y la avenida Woodland, y la pequeña calle usada por la ruta 30 para permitir un de giro a la derecha sobre la calle 42 en esta intersección del ángulo agudo. Esta revisión requiere la ruta 30 sea desviada hacia Chester Avenue.
RUTA 47La ruta alterna propuesta viaja desde las calles Front y Luzerne
RUTA 52Desde el 2003, cuando SEPTA fue forzada a desocupar la ubicación donde giraba la ruta 52 en la calle 54 y City Avenue, diversas rutas (sobre una docena) han sido analizadas y utilizadas y para girar los autobuses y regresarlos a la parada de la calle 54 y City Avenue. Por varios años, el autobus 52 utilizó la ruta vía las avenidas City, Bala y Belmont resultando en gastos operativos adicionales anuales, mientras brindaba poco servicio de transportacion ya que existen otras rutas de SEPTA que viajan en City Line Avenue. Esto recursos perdidos podrían ser utilizados en otras partes para el servicio necesario. En enero de 2013, SEPTA implemento la alternativa menos costosa del giro usando la avenida de Wynnefield y la avenida Cardinal para llegar a la avenida City Line y el area de la parada de la calle 54. Esta ruta reduce gastos operativos en vez de la ruta anterior de Bala, se ha comprobado operacionalmente exitosa, y se propone para hacerla permanente.
RUTA 57La ruta alterna propuesta viaja desde las calles Front y Luzerne
RUTA 92Esta ruta conecta a Exton y King of Prusia. El nuevo segmento propuesto de la ruta alterna permite servicio directo a lo largo del Swedesford Road en el municipio de Tredyffrin, del condado de Chester durante horas de la noche y del servicio de los Sabados. Durante este tiempo, los negocios a lo largo de la ruta básica, sirviendo un complejo de oficinas en Devon Park, generalmente no están abiertos. No se perderán ningunos pasajeros y se benefician de un viaje más rápido.
ROUTE 96Esta ruta conecta a Lansdale con el Centro de Transporte de Norristown. El cambio propuesto permite un desvío a largo plazo causado cuando el acceso al extremo anterior de la ruta en Lansdale fue bloqueado por los cambios al diseño de la calle. Haría el desvio a largo plazo parte de la ruta básica. También haria cambios a la circulación requeridos por el Montgomery County Community College en Blue Bell.
RUTA 99Los cambios propuestos permiten que SEPTA provea acceso seguro al nuevo centro comercial a lo largo de Egypt Road en la comunidad de Oaks en el municipio de Upper Provinece, condado de Montgomery. Los cambios al diseño de la calle de otra manera habrían hecho difícil proporcionar servicio a este nuevo generador. El cambio también evita que los operadores tengan que hacer una serie movimientos difíciles al girar hacia Station Avenue. La ruta 111 entonces actuaría en ambas direcciones a través del centro de ciudad, proveyendo consistencia con la ruta 119.
RUTA 118Esta ruta conecta a Newtown Square con el Centro del Transporte de Chester. El cambio propuesto a la tarifa se enfoca en un viaje añadido de Chester durante días de clase en otoño y en primavera al Instituto de Delaware County Community College Marple Campus debido al sobrecargo en horarios pico en la mañana.Los viajes express serán operados como alternativa segun sea necesario.
RUTA 439El cambio a la ruta propuesta sirve pricipalmente a pasajeros viajando de Germantown y Henry avenue hacia la calle Cinnaminson.
RUTAs 402, 403, 404, 407, 424 & 491Se propone la discontinuación de estas rutas debido al cierre de las escuela y/o bajo número de usuarios del transporte.
RUTA LLa ruta alternativa propuesta permiten que la ruta L viaje tarde en la noche a lo largo de la avenida de Wissahickon para servir a empleados trabajando en las residencias de ancianos.
