SECOND PLACE IN FIRST SWIM GALA OF THE YEAR!

2018

Dear Parents,

Pink Day last week was a tre-mendous success and I cannot thank all those involved enough. The enthusiasm from the stu-dents was amazing and I am now very much looking forward to experiencing my first Na-tional Day at Al Mamoura Acad-emy which is taking place on Wednesday 28th November.

Our school also hosted an Academy of Excellence Event on Sunday this week with other Aldar Schools in attendance. Our speaker, Michael Griffin, did a great job of capturing the imagination of the students in attendance.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Thank you to everyone for your patience with the roadworks outside of school. It is not ide-al and we are working hard to communicate with those re-sponsible to ensure we have a more accessible school site at drop off and pick up times. I have been closely monitoring the situation and am pleased to say that there always seems to be plenty of places to park out the front of the school. Please use these parking spaces if you wish to come in to school to drop off or pick up your child. This will mean other parents are not inconvenienced by peo-ple parking in places that were designed for drop off only.

Kind Regards

Ms Christine WoodsPrincipal

PINK DAY

We would like to thank everyone who supported Al Mamoura Pink Day on Thursday. It was a fantastic day, enjoyed immensely by the students, and with your support we raised over 31,000AED!

Thank you to our wonderful fam-ilies whose generosity knows no bounds and to our FOAM Com-mittee. Thank you in particular to those who gave up their free time to support with decorations, cake making, arranging for music at reception, organising student stalls and so much more.

Academy of Excellence – Guest Speaker

This week we welcomed a guest speaker who had visited Al Mamoura all the way from Australia. Michael Griffin is an educator, keynote speaker, author and pianist. He provides development opportunities for students all over the world by providing enrichment lectures and workshops.

On Sunday, Al Mamoura hosted Academy of Excellence students from all schools in Aldar Acade-mies. Students were empowered to appreciate the role of self-mo-tivation and effort in the devel-opment of skills and learning. Students learned about manag-ing their time, the importance of sleep and how to avoid losing time in digital devices.

Our Music students also attend-ed an additional masterclass that developed their musical skills. This allowed students to develop their awareness on the quality and quantity of practice time and how to maximise learning music in an enjoyable and successful way.

Our Academy of Excellence students have had a busy few weeks, students have success-fully applied and auditioned for their place on the programme and immediately went on to take part in leading Pink Day, which was a huge success. Alongside the guest speaker, students will also attend Masterclasses next week which will enhance their learning even further. We are looking forward to hosting more events for our exceptional stu-dents in the near future.

NEWS IN YEAR GROUPS FOUNDATION STAGE 1

This week in FS1 we have been focusing on expressing our feelings and emotions. Every day we share how we are feeling with our friends by either pointing to the feelings emoji’s or making different facial expressions. Some of us have also been able to explain why we feel happy or sad.

Thank you to parents who have emailed in photos or videos of the homework, we have really enjoyed looking at them in class and guessing which expression the children were making. We have also started to do yoga every day in class, this week we practised the Namaste pose. Yoga not only helps us to relax, it also builds up our body strength and helps to increase our concentration. Maybe you could help your child to practice next week’s yoga pose over the weekend, you can find it on the homework sheet.

The children have been very busy in FS2 this week, we have started our streamed phonics and the children have enjoyed meeting their new phonics teachers and have had lots of fun playing phonics games and learning new sounds.

We have had our FIMs in the FS area this week, providing lots of information about phonics and reading. Thank you to all the parents who attended, we hope you found the meetings helpful.

NEWS IN YEAR GROUPS FOUNDATION STAGE 2

The whole of FS2 had a fantas-tic day last Thursday for breast cancer awareness. The children loved wearing their pink clothes and we raised lots of money for a good cause.

As always thanks you for your continued supportThe FS2 team

NEWS IN YEAR GROUPS YEAR 1

What an exciting week we have had in Year 1! We have spent the week busily preparing for our ‘Tiger Who Came to Tea’ tea party.

In English, we started the week with a fun speaking and listening activity. We took turns to pretend to be the tiger from our story and to answer questions from his point of view orally. We completed book reviews on our book and wrote about our favourite party in the story. We were very eager Mr. Blakey to attend our tea party so we wrote lots of invitations to him inviting him to join us!

In Maths this week, we focused on addition. We enjoyed completing addition sentences using our cubes and counters to help us. Later in the week, we moved on to a new concept called the Part Whole Model. We enjoyed using this model to apply our adding skills in lots of different ways.

This week in Science, we focused on two new senses Touch and Taste. We loved feeling lots of different materials and making our own texture hands with them. During our tea party we explored different tastes and spent time describing them.

Our Art lessons were spent making beautiful decorations for our tea party. All our hard work paid off and we had a fantastic time at our wonderful ‘Tiger Who Came to Tea’ party on Thursday.

Thank you so much to all the families who provided food and utensils for our special party!

NEWS IN YEAR GROUPS YEAR 2

It has been another fantastic week of learning in Year 2! This week, children have been working hard on their times tables challenge. The children are eager to continue to move up to the next country on the chart displayed in the shared area, well done year 2!

In English, the children have continued to explore their vocabulary and have been looking closely at the features of a narrative text. They have planned their own story which involves a problem and a solution, and have enjoyed discussing and sharing their ideas!

In Maths, the children have continued to work on their problem solving skills and have been looking at number bonds, as well as addition and subtraction. We have discussed new vocabulary, such as calculations, sum, minus and total. Well done year 2!

The Year 2 team would like to extend their thanks to parents for so generously donating lots of healthy fruits and foods to enable us to make our healthy smoothies during Pink Day last week. The children and staff very much enjoyed tasting new flavours and inventing new mixtures to create delicious concoctions!

Reminder: All children must have a hat and water bottle every day for yard times, thank you.

NEWS IN YEAR GROUPS YEAR 3

In Topic this week we have been learning about Tsunami’s and how they occur. We will finish the study of ‘Our Planet’ next week.

During Maths we have been continuing to work on Place Value. This week the children have been adding and subtract-ing tens from 3 digit numbers. Next week we will be adding 2 digit and 3 digit numbers. We also continued our Times Tables Challenge this week. Please look in your child’s reading diary to see what times table they will move onto next.

In our English sessions the chil-dren have relished the opportu-nity to show how much they’ve learned this term. They planned their own Hot Write to include interesting characters and settings which should make for some amazing Hot Writes next week. Please make sure to dis-cuss their Hot Write with them and continue to read with the Year 3 children every evening.

In Literacy next week, the children have ‘skills’ based lessons identified from common gaps in their knowledge from the ‘Hot Write’ task that was completed independently this week.

NEWS IN YEAR GROUPS YEAR 4

Next week in Maths, we will move on to measures including perimeter of regular shapes and different units of measurement e.g. kilometers. Next week in Science, the children will be moving onto identifying and creating examples of food chains.

Reminders: Sadly, homework on Manga High, Education City and Literacy Planet is hardly being looked at or completed at home by our whole year group. It is a wonderful resource to support your child’s learning which is not being utilized. Please support us by ensuring that this is completed weekly. After the half term break, we will be moving onto our ‘Rainforests’ topic. The children will be creating a rainforest model so we would appreciate if you could start collecting materials for the project (shoe boxes, art materials etc).

NEWS IN YEAR GROUPS YEAR 5

Year 5 have once again had a busy week. In English this week all children have been learning the ins and outs of how to research information for a biography. Texts have been scanned, read and reread with all the interesting facts used in our quest to write a great biography. Ipads and laptops have been used to research in detail about the background of our subjects. Keeping in line with our theme for the term of F1 each class has been assigned a F1 driver who they will be writing a biography about. We feel as if we know everything there is to know about our drivers from their date of birth to their favourite musician. Perhaps we know the drivers better than they know themselves at this point.

In Maths we have been doing a lot of work on problem solving. We have been taking what we know in addition and subtraction and have been pushing ourselves in how far we can push our understanding of the topic through doing all different types of maths word problems and challenges. Each week are still competing on our F1 maths tables game. We are trying to work our way through different Grand Prix circuits. Qualifying from each circuit means that not alone do we know our tables but we are quick at completing them too.

After the excitement of flying our parachutes last week, we wrote up our investigation and recorded our results. We have been further exploring gravity and all that it affects.

In Computer Studies this week we completed our websites and have learned how to put in a side bar to give it a more professional feel and look.

We are really looking forward to participating in the Asia Cup Roadshow. We saw it set up last week for other year groups and the set up looks really impressive. We can’t wait to test our skills in the different skill zones. Our first Year 5 assembly will take place with Reem taking to the stage on Thursday. Don’t forget Question a Day is up and running with each child being expected to complete it each night at home.

NEWS IN YEAR GROUPS YEAR 6

Another busy week in Year 6! We had a very successful and enjoyable trip to Al Bateen, where the children were able to take part in various Science workshops and have a tour of the school. The children also really enjoyed taking part in the Asia cup activities, showing some true leadership and captain-like qualities!

In English, the children have been improving their mystery and suspense stories by measuring it against a success criteria and adding in more interesting description and the exciting sentences and suspense features they have been working on. We have also moved on to a new writing genre which will include looking at information and persuasive texts. We will be using a ‘Pie Corbett’ approach where the children will learn a text and look at the features and language in depth, this will then help when the children come to do their own writing.

In Maths, the children have been revising long and short multiplication and division methods and have been using these skills in reasoning and problem-solving activities. In Science, Year 6 are continuing to learn about different body systems including how digestion works and how what we eat provides our bodies with energy.

It was lovely to see so many parents join in with the KS2 coffee morning this week. We hope to see you all again at the next one!

International General Certificate of Secondary Education (I/GCSE) Results 2018Year 10 marks the beginning of the IGCSE programme and our two year Middle School Curriculum (Years 10 and 11). The GCSE is a British academic qualification awarded in a specified subject; the Inter-national GCSE qualification is available for international students. Both GCSE and IGCSE are qualifica-tions equally recognised by universities and employers throughout the world. For some subjects there is no IGCSE option so the school has opted for a GCSE qualification (e.g. GCSE Physical Education). For both IGCSE and GCSE there is no easy option or easy subject.

Students choose one or more science subjects (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics) and must study IGCSE Mathematics and English. Students can then choose additional I/GCSE subjects from different options blocks. Current I/GCSE option subjects are, as follows: Arabic, Art & Design, Business Studies, Com-puter Science, Design Technology, Drama, Economics, French, History, Geography, ICT, Music, Physical Education, Psychology, Sociology and Spanish.

I/GCSE is graded A* (highest) to G or 9 (highest) to 1.

Year 11 students are required to achieve a minimum 5 A* - C (or 9 - 5) including English, Mathematics and a Science to meet the entry requirements for the IB DP (Senior School).

SPORTS NEWSAL MAMOURA FINISHES SEC-OND IN FIRST SWIMMING GALA OF THE YEAR!

Al Mamoura swim squad took part in their first swimming event of the year, on Sunday 7th October. Having spent the first few weeks of term practicing on a Sunday after school and very early on Tuesday mornings, the students were eager to compete and try and win their first swim-ming gala.

The gala consisted of 5 schools; Al Mamoura Academy, West Yas Academy, Repton School GEMS Cambridge and Al Yafat. Al Mamoura students com-peted fantastically and battled with Repton for first place from the beginning, as both schools finished first and second in the team events. When the individual events began however, Repton began to claim more points and took an early lead.

By the time the gala reached the final team races, Repton had a commanding lead over the other schools and all Al Mamoura could do was to keep earning points to ensure that they would finished second. The effort and attitude of all our Al Mamoura swimmers was excellent and their continued progress will en-sure they have a good chance of winning trophies in future galas!

Repton: 381 points, Al Mamoura: 285, GEMS Cambridge: 201, West Yas: 199 Al Yafat only had 2 swimmers who performed very well for their school in their first ever gala.

SPORTS NEWSU11 Girls Football Match v The Pearl Academy:The girls took on their second competition in the Football league. They played away at the Pearl Academy. The game was very even throughout with both teams having a few chances on goal. The times that pearl broke through the middle our defence worked together to clear the ball away from goal. At the begin-ning of the second half Malak won the ball and managed to get free from their defence to then take on the goalkeeper and score! She worked tirelessly up front with a special perfor-mance, assisted throughout by Reem who we discovered has a secret weapon throw! Sheikha covered in goal for Salma who was unfortunately unwell on this day, she played with confidence and communicated throughout to her team. Lara and Juliette made a fantastic team in de-fence ensuring nothing came through them! All of the girls played so well together given that it’s their second game as a team. You should all be so proud of your performance!

FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP ROADSHOW ROLLS INTO AL MAMOURA!

AL MAMOURA ACADEMY NEWSLETTERISSUE NO.6 | OCTOBER 2018

This week Al Mamoura U11 Touch Rugby Team had a fix-ture at Al Mamoura against The Pearl. After a difficult first fixture last week, the boys were ready to take on the next chal-lenge and try and get a win un-der their belts. The game start-ed very lively with both sides attacking each other really well and both showing excellent de-fending skills. It was Al Mamou-ra who took the advantage first with a great team passing try. 1 – 0 Al Mamoura. The game continued with moments of good attacking play and some scrap-py moments with both teams turning the ball over. After some good individual play from a Pearl player, they managed to equal the game at 1-1. As the first half came to an end it seemed it would finish in a draw, however, Mamoura found themselves just off the Pearl try line and with a diving finish managed to place the ball over the line and make the game 2-1.

The second half saw both teams begin to tire and make mistakes, but both still pushing with great effort and determination to score the next try. It was Pearl who managed to find that next try, with a diving finish of their own. 2-2. That seemed to be the finishing try with only a min-ute to go on the clock. Howev-er, a missed placed pass from Mamoura meant a turnover for the Pearl. With some quick thinking the restarted the game instantly and drove forward as a team to score the final try, mak-ing the end result Al Mamoura 2 – The Pearl 3. All students involved worked extremely hard and showed great team work in what was a difficult match.

Next up is BSAK (British Inter-national School Al Khubairat) on Monday 15th October.

The U14 Netball team continued their impressive improvement this week when they played against Brighton College on Tuesday. Raghd Abdo ensured that Al Mamoura’s scoring re-cord improved with her accurate shooting. The ball travelled along the court more smoothly be-cause of much more space being created on the court and better decision making from the whole team. It is wonderful to see new faces attending netball practice all of the time and the bigger the squad becomes the better training that can take place. Well done to all of the girls who played again this week.

YEAR 7 STUDENT RECEPTIONISTS

At Al Mamoura we are always looking for new and exciting ways for your daughter to become in-volved in the wider life of the school. We would like to continuously challenge them so they can gain experience in as broad a range of areas as possi-ble. The latest opportunity we are offering our Year 7 students is to become a Student Receptionist for a day.

The role of Student Re-ceptionist will form part of various student leader-ship programmes in the Secondary School while also opening ideas towards careers education in the lower school. Through this role girls in Year 7 will experience what is it like to be part of a team, deal-ing with daily operational tasks, talking to the gen-eral public and answering simple enquiries. This will greatly enhance our girls’ confidence, maturity, problem solving and deci-sion-making skills. This will work on a rota basis across the whole of Year 7 which will mean that your daughter will per-form this role once or twice throughout the year, so the girls can benefit from the experience and minimise any impact on learning time.

An Art Competition for the best Sash design has begin in secondary. Please look out for our brand new ‘receptionists’ and do not hesitate to ask for help from them!
