Diabetes in Alabama

According to a recent national survey, almost 1 in 10 adults in Alabama has beendiagnosed with diabetes. Currentestimates indicate that approximately333,500 Alabamians have been diagnosedwith diabetes and that as many as200,000 more may have the condition andbe unaware of it. The rate rose from 5.6percent of adults in 1990 to 9.7 percent in2005, a gain of over 70 percent over theperiod. Alabama now has the highest ratein all 50 states. Diabetes is the sixthleading cause of death in the state. Thedisease directly contributes to theincidence of heart disease and strokes, also leading causes of death, and is theprimary cause of kidney failure, non-trauma related limb amputations andadult-onset blindness.

Adults with diabetes are 2 to 4 times morelikely to die of heart disease or have astroke than adults without diabetes. Leftuntreated or uncontrolled, diabetes canalso lead to other complications, includingnerve damage, dental disease, andpregnancy complications. Diabetes candirectly cause acute life-threateningevents, such as diabetic coma, and peoplewith diabetes are more susceptible tomany other illnesses, such as influenzaand pneumonia.

Self-management of diabetes is the key topreventing complications. It is importantthat people living with diabetes learn howto manage the disease and maintain goodhealth. This directory is intended to directpeople living with diabetes to educationalprograms, support groups, and otherresources that can help promote andsustain healthy behaviors that will helpavert complications and improve thequality and length of life.

In Alabama, almost onein every 10 adults has

been diagnosed with diabetes.
