Dogs even used to come and lick his sores. When the poor man died, he was carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham. The rich man also died and was buried, and from the netherworld, where he was in torment, he raised his eyes and saw Abra-ham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he cried out, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me. Send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering tor-ment in these flames.' Abraham replied, ‘My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad; but now he is com-forted here, whereas you are tormented. Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established to prevent anyone from crossing who might wish to go from our side to yours or from your side to ours.’ He said, ‘Then I beg you, father, send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they too come to this place of torment.' REFLEXIÓN DOMINICAL / SUNDAY REFLECTION LIFE BEYOND DEATH

The parable in today’s gospel is one of the most well known. The memory of the miserable character who begged for alms at the doors of the rich is part of the popular culture. Today there are still many Lazarus’ ask-ing for help at the doors of those who can help, but are too focused on their world to notice their surroundings. There are immigrants who live in search of a worthy life. There are people out of work, homeless, without access to education. There are also many rich, feasting without considering what happens beyond their doors. Most of us are probably not in these extremes. But in this contrast between Lazarus and Dives, we understand that we cannot live a life in which we look only towards our own interests and concerns. Lazarus is the poor that we see in the streets; but it is also anyone close who is in need of love and attention. Frequently, it is not about giving money, but offering time, companionship, a word of encouragement and understanding. To live as a Christian means to open our eyes to see beyond our-selves; it is to be concerned with others to the point of giving our life. Like Jesus. For Reflection Do I try to know what needs exists around me? How do I try to solve them?

VIDA MÁS ALLÁ DE LA MUERTE

La parábola del evangelio de hoy es una de las mas conocidas. Forma parte de la cultura popular el re-cuerdo de aquel personaje mísero que solicitaba limos-na a las puertas del rico. Hoy siguen existiendo muchos Lázaros que solicitan ayuda a las puertas de los que podrían ayudar, pero que están demasiado concen-trados en su propio mundo como para darse cuenta que hay a su alrededor. Hay inmigrantes que vienen en busca de una vida digna. Hay personas sin trabajos, sin techo, sin acceso a la educación. También sigue ha-biendo muchos ricos que banquetean sin pensar en lo que sucede más allá de sus puertas.

Posiblemente la mayoría de nosotros no estemos en los extremos. Pero en esa posición entre Lázaro y Epulón comprendemos mejor que no podemos vivir una vida en la que miremos solamente a nuestros propios intere-ses y preocupaciones. Lázaro son los pobres que a ve-ces vemos en las calles; pero también es cualquier per-sona cercana necesitada de cariño y atención. En mu-chas ocasiones no se trata de dar dinero, sino de ofre-cer tiempo, compañía, una palabra de aliento, de comprensión. Vivir en cristiano significa abrir los ojos para ver más allá de nosotros mismos; es interesarse por los demás hasta dar la vida. Como Jesús.

Para la reflexión ¿Procuro saber qué necesidades existen a mi alrede-dor? ¿Cómo trato de solucionarlas?

Con este título el pontífice reconoce que la doctrina propuesta por Teresa del Niño Jesús y de la Santa Faz puede ser un punto de referencia para todos los cristianos del mundo no sólo por-que se adecua perfectamente a la verdad, sino también por-que ofrece nueva luz sobre los misterios de la fe. A continua-ción el obispo de Roma explicó la importancia del mensaje de Teresa para la sociedad de que se propone cruzar el umbral del tercer milenio: «En una cultura racionalista y demasiado a menudo invadida por un materialismo práctico ella opone con una sencillez que desarma "la pequeña vía" que conduce al secreto de toda existencia: el Amor divino que envuelve y pe-netra toda la aventura humana». «En un tiempo como el nues-tro, caracterizado por la cultura de lo efímero y del hedonis-mo, esta nueva Doctora de la Iglesia se muestra dotada de una singular eficacia para esclarecer el espíritu y el corazón de los que tienen sed de verdad y de amor». Santa Teresa de Lisieux, penetrando en el espíritu del Evangelio y la pasión de la refor-madora del Carmelo, santa Teresa de Ávila, profundizó la mís-tica centrada en el amor, que ella llamó la «pequeña vía de la infancia espiritual», experiencia íntima que recogió en su libro «Historia de un alma», traducido a 50 idiomas. Sus escritos aportan, entre otras cosas, la experiencia espiritual de los dos últimos años de su vida, debatidos en medio de la enfermedad que la lle-vó a la tumba, en la que no faltó la prueba de la duda y de la crisis de fe.

ST. THERESA OF LISIEUX (OF THE CHILD JESUS) Oct. 1: Saint and Doctor of the Church

On October 1, Catholics around the world honor the life of St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus, or St. Thérèse of Lisieux on her feast day. “Charity gave me the key to my vocation… My vo-cation is Love!” Thérèse offered herself as a sacrificial victim to the merciful Love of God on June 9, 1895, the feast of the Most Holy Trinity and the following year, on the night be-tween Holy Thursday and Good Friday, she noticed the first symptoms of Tuberculosis, the illness which would lead to her death. Thérèse recognized in her illness the mysterious visita-tion of the divine Spouse and welcomed the suffering as an answer to her offering the previous year. She also began to undergo a terrible trial of faith which lasted until her death a year and a half later. “Her last words, ‘My God, I love you,’ are the seal of her life,” said Pope John Paul II. Since her death, millions have been inspired by her ‘little way’ of loving God and neighbor. Many miracles have been attributed to her in-tercession. She had predicted during her earthly life that “My Heaven will be spent doing good on Earth.” Saint Thérèse was

proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope John Paul II in 1997 - 100 years after her death at the age of 24. She is only the third woman to be so proclaimed, after Saint Catherine of Siena and Saint Teresa of Avila. St. Thérèse wrote once, 'You know well enough that Our Lord does not look so much at the greatness of our actions, nor even at their difficulty, but at the love with which we do them."

DIGNIDAD DEL TRABAJO Y DERECHOS DE LOS TRABAJADORES

La economía debe servir al pueblo y no al revés. El trabajo es más que una forma de ganarse la vida, es una forma de participar continuamente en la crea-ción de Dios. Si se ha de proteger la dignidad del tra-bajo, entonces debe respetarse los derechos básicos de los trabajadores-el derecho a un trabajo producti-vo, a salarios adecuados y justos, a organizar sindica-tos y a unirse a ellos, a la propiedad privada y a la iniciativa económica.

El trabajo es, como se ha dicho, una obligación, es decir, un deber, por parte del hombre… El hombre debe trabajar, tan-to porque el Creador ha ordenado, y por causa de su propia humanidad, lo que requiere el trabajo con el fin de mantener y desarrollar. El hombre debe trabajar por respeto a los de-más, especialmente a su propia familia, pero también para la sociedad a la que pertenece, el país en el que vive, y toda la familia humana de la que es miembro, ya que él es el herede-ro del trabajo de generaciones y, al mismo tiempo partícipe de la construcción del futuro de los que vendrán después de él en la sucesión de la historia.

Todas las personas tienen el derecho a la iniciativa económi-ca, al trabajo productivo , a salarios justos y beneficios, a con-diciones dignas de trabajo, así como para organizar y unirse a los sindicatos u otras asociaciones. Todas las personas tienen derecho al trabajo, a la oportunidad de desarrollar sus cuali-dades y personalidad al ejercer su profesión, a una remunera-ción equitativa, para que ellos y sus familias "puedan llevar una vida digna a nivel material, social, cultural y espiritual" y a asistencia en caso de necesidad a causa de enfermedad o edad avanzada.

DIGNITY OF WORK AND THE RIGHTS OF WORKERS

The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continuing participation in Gods creation. If the dignity of work is to be pro-tected, then the basic rights of workers must be respected--the right to productive work, to de-cent and fair wages, to the organization and join-ing of unions, to private property, and to econom-ic initiative.

Work is, as has been said, an obligation, that is to say, a duty, on the part of man. . . Man must work, both because the Creator has commanded it and because of his own humanity, which requires work in order to be maintained and developed. Man must work out of regard for others, especially his own family, but also for the society he be-longs to, the country of which he is a child, and the whole human family of which he is a member, since he is the heir to the work of generations and at the same time a sharer in building the future of those who will come after him in the succession of history.

All people have the right to economic initiative, to produc-tive work, to just wages and benefits, to decent working conditions, as well as to organize and join unions or oth-er associations. All people have the right to work, to a chance to develop their qualities and their personalities in the exercise of their professions, to equitable remunera-tion which will enable them and their families "to lead a worthy life on the material, social, cultural and spiritual level" and to assistance in case of need arising from sick-ness or age.

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Amos punishes religious people who, “comfortably complacent” (6:1, 5), ignore the unfolding collapse of culture, nation, religion (6:6). In Jesus’ parable, such complacency becomes the rich man’s undo-ing. He neither hurt nor harmed Lazarus, neither denied him leftovers nor ordered him removed.

That is Jesus’ devastating point. The rich man did noth-ing wrong to Lazarus; he just did nothing at all good for him. Only in death, separated by “a great chasm” (Luke 16:26), could the rich man finally see Lazarus, whom he had failed to see in life, right before his eyes. Like the rich man’s “five brothers still in my father’s house” (16:27–28), we who are alive in the Church still have time to see that same Someone, Jesus, lying neglected right at our door—and time to do something. Who, specifically, con-cretely, practically, is Lazarus in my life? What can I do for that Jesus-in-the-flesh during this Jubilee Year of Mercy?

Amos castiga a personas religiosas “confiadas” (6:1, 5) que ignoran la caída de la cultura, de la nación, de la religión (6:6). En la parábola de Jesús esa confianza es la perdición del hombre rico. Él no lastima o perjudica a Lázaro, tampoco le niega las sobras ni pide que lo quiten de la entrada de su casa. Y ese es el punto prin-cipal que Jesús menciona. El hombre rico no hizo ningún mal a Lázaro, pero tampoco hizo algo bueno por Lázaro. Solo después de la muerte, separados por “un abismo inmen-so” (Lucas 16:26), pudo el hombre rico ver a Lázaro, a quien no se atrevió a verlo mientras vivió, justo ante sus ojos. Así como los cinco hermanos que quedaban en la casa del hom-bre rico (16:27–28), nosotros los que vivimos en la Iglesia todavía tenemos tiempo para ver a ese alguien, a Jesús que está a la entrada de nuestra puerta y que es tiempo para hacer algo. ¿Quién, practica, concreta y específicamente es Lázaro en mi vida? ¿Qué puedo hacer por ese Jesús de carne y hueso durante este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia?

The fair will consist of activities and workshops for students, parents, and community members to learn about the process of going to college including how to apply for college, career and vocational occupations, and the financial aid process.

This FREE event allows students from kindergarten to High School and parents to explore higher education options. There

will be free food, giveaways and an award ceremony for this year’s scholarship recipients.
