About Me

I'm a young designer with a bachelor degree in Design (FA/UTLisbon + Erasmus in TUDelft / Netherlands) and a Masters degree in Product Design (FA / TULisbon).

I am a versatile, honest, committed, responsible, sincere, pragmatic and objective oriented designer. I'm able to work well both in a team or individually. My curiosity, love for innovation and willingness to please and surprise consumers are the reasons I always felt attracted to design, especially product design. For this reason I have no problems working in any place in the world as long as I can face new challenges.

I'm used to work under pressure, I deal well with tight deadlines and I respond well to urgent project details that arise at the last minute. I like to follow the entire product development since its first idea, development, production and marketing. I have a special fascination for complex projects and / or problems that apparently have no solution. I always look into ways to offer innovative products with their own identity that must be attractive, functional and elegant.

I have some work experience at developing concepts, 3D models with the respective budget, advise the subsequent marketing strategy and materials to increase the product success rate. I had the opportunity to contribute to the strategic development of a recent company called PhoenixDs. Some of my responsibilities were related to product selection and development for specific targets; service specification; definition of product experiences; and definition of user/company communication. This part-time projects were developed while I was still studying, which helped me finance my studies during the Masters. Currently I'm seeking a new opportunity to join a team / company focused on ambitious projects where I may put my skills to good use, where I can see my career evolve, be proud of my work and help the company itself to outperform the competition. Finally, I also hope to have the opportunity to gain new experiences and skills to satisfy my curiosity for consumer design.

I am 100% available to answer any questions about other projects I developed, previous experience, skills, etc.

What this is

This concept started with the development of a bench. After that it evolved into other objects, like bollards and litter bins, with the same identity to create a coherent whole. It has a simple identity to smoothly integrate in the urban environment with a low production/ maintenance cost as well as being environmentally friendly. This concept was one of the finalists in the national sustainable urban equipment design contest promoted by Caixa Geral de Depósitos (Portuguese Bank). Group project: Alain Santos Monteiro and Luis Castanheira Santos.

First we researched which are the most familiar objects in the urban landscape. The starting point was the bench, because of its frequency and because of its long history and tradition in the context of urban environments. We tried to create a shape that creates a sense of dynamism with a modern identity, reflecting the identity of the city itself. It is also intended that these products should have the least environmental impact possible, assuring that the production materials and technologies are the most appropriate and preferably local.

Objective

The components made of metal sheet (where all components may be cut from a single sheet) and deck boards are flexible, i.e., its material, technology and assembly may vary depending on the frequency/amount of type of material found on the recycling lines. That is, the metal sheet may be composed of recycled steel or aluminum. The same occurs with the deck, having different rates of polymers combined with wood. This versatility allows a cost reduction and an increase in environmental performance while consuming recycled materials near the production site.

What this is

Polyethylene set of kitchen utensils and containers for everyday use in the kitchen conceived for large scale industrial production. The set has containers for solids and liquids in addition to colander, sieve, etc.. All parts can be stacked or placed inside each other to save space. This concept explores the combination of two polymers with specific functions.

How to create a durable set of kitchenware that is both functional and visually appealing? How to combine two polymers in order to take advantage of the characteristics of both?

We tried to combine a translucent polymer (high-density polyethylene | HDPE), easy to inject so that the surface can be textured (making them more interesting to the touch) with a tougher polymer (Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene | UHMWPE) that aims to provide greater resistance to these objects. This harder polymer creates the distinctive "veins" working as a unifying element between the pieces although they have different shapes because of their specific functions.

What this is

furniture collection

This furniture collection is composed by several pieces for interior spaces. Spaces such as living room / dining room, bed rooms, lobby, etc. They are a starting point that can define a more complete collection.

How to create a flexible furniture collection that allows a certain level of customization without, however, triggering higher production costs? Each person has life experiences, tastes and memories that make each one of us unique, this references can be used as elements that characterize the furniture and make them unique, tailored to your own identity. In this case I choose high-profile buildings in the city where I lived for five years, Lisbon.

Problem/Inspiration

All components are made of waterproof MDF and some components are the same between pieces of furniture to minimize stocks. What distinguishes them are the later finishes (veneer / varnishing or lacquering). The (metal) "line" that helps define the shape of the furniture pieces, which also composes the design of the buildings, are glued to the surface, creating a slight relief that is appealing to the touch and facilitates its production. The shape of the line can be adapted to other elements that define the taste of the client.

What this is

Concept of urban public transport powered by hydrogen (produced by wastewater). It is fully automated to eliminate traffic and dramatically reduce the risk of accidents. This concept is an alternative proposal to the infrastructure required for the electrolysis of large amounts of water to produce hydrogen. This vehicle uses solar and kinetic energy to break the wastewater, rich in urea, which is 300% more efficient at producing hydrogen.

This concept was a finalist of the worldwide Incheon International Design Award competition.

The idea was to create a vehicle prepared for the gigantic cities of the future. It is intended to clean the waste water, release oxygen and capture carbon dioxide. The clean water produced during this process can be reused for other purposes. The main source of inspiration for this concept were plants, which produce their own energy and release oxygen (this process is replicated by this concept urban vehicle).

Objective/ inspiration

It absorbs carbon dioxide to neutralize the wastewater and supply the air conditioning systems and fire fighting system. The interior components are made of polyester (recycled water bottles) or bio-polymers to facilitate recycling. It has a aluminum structure and the outer surface is textured like a golf ball to reduce wind resistance and fuel consumption. The windows darken with the sun to keep the interior fresh and it can display information about the city, the weather or any other relevant information for the passengers.

Stand with a circular structure that allows one, two or even three counters depending on the arrangement of the modules, while maintaining a clean and elegant identity. The collapsible structure can be reused for other purposes to recover the investment. The colors applied on the "souvenir" (with its unusual but attractive shape) have their origin in the decorative tiles of the chapel of Santo Amaro and it plays with the idea of ephemeral stand / "eternal souvenir".

More than just handing out flyers, the main idea is to sell a "souvenir" that works as a memory. Taking advantage of the human tendency to store and sometimes collect objects that make them remember a particular day or situation, thus this ephemeral installation will make people remember Santo Amaro, maybe forever. The fact that this "souvenir" serves as a bargaining chip will help keep the traditional businesses of this area by bringing more visitors.

Stand to publicize and promote the district of Santo Amaro in the Lisbon celebrations in a one month installation at Praça do Comércio. It serves as a point of sale for a "souvenir" that can be exchanged for something on the district of Santo Amaro (meal, coffee, book, etc).

What this is

Resting, leisure, reading chair that explores the limits of the materials used (molded MDF combined with fiberglass and PRV resin) inspired on the Brugmansia flower.

Group project: Alain Santos Monteiro, Filipe Anacleto Corado, Luis Pedro Sousa.

Given that the project was limited to two different materials (MDF and fiberglass) it sought to build a seat that was attractive, elegant, that seemed fragile, as the flower that inspired this concept. It was intended to explore the limits of the materials to reduce the number of components and consequently reduce the production costs, maintaining, however, an organic appearance.

Objective

The seat and backrest are joined only where the leg touches the ground, which makes it slightly flexible, making the chair more comfortable when leaning back. The differences between the prototype and the renders consist of various tests and adjustments in the development process. For the production of the final chair it is intended to combine both, in order to achieve the (even more) organic curvatures from the renders and the resistance of the prototype.

What this is

Packaging proposal for the products of the Co-operative Society "Sabores da Idanha" and a gourmet assortment that combines several products from the same co-operative society. This idea had the objective to promote their different brands and encourage consumers to try out a greater variety of products from the same company.

How to highlight a cheese brand in the middle of dozens of different brands, where all have a similar marketing strategy? The aim is to create a package design that is both easy to produce and stand out from the competition. It should be visually appealing to consumers and it should reflect the values/identity of the co-operative society. It must have a fresh and modern look, with a superior quality.

Problem/objective

Low cost packaging proposal with a luxury identity. It can be built with recycled paper and without the use any glues to make recycling easy. This proposal is a development that respects the original design of the label.Shape of the packaging is easy to stack (transport) and creates rhythms when displayed in retail shelves to attract consumers.

All packages have space to display the medals and prizes collected as unequivocal proof of its quality. They also have a cutout at the top so the client can make an initial assessment of the product before opening the package to see the cheese in its entirety.

The original logo of "Sabores da Idanha" was a good starting point, where the thistle is already, in itself, a good differentiator. We only proceeded to a slight simplification in order to highlight the thistle and facilitate the memorization by consumers. These characteristics also make it easier to read and memorize the brand "Sabores da Idanha."

We kept the original background design as a sign of respect for its origins and avoid a

rupture with its past.

What this is

Thai design that values its origins. This is a concept of "anti-stress" bathtub that seeks to enhance the user experience and relaxation, using environmentally friendly materials and local technologies. This tub is intended to be more than just an object to take a bath, it strives for a relaxing experience for a single person or a couple. The head supports, made of woven rattan, hold a small vibration motor that allows the muscles sternocleidomastoideus and trapezius to relax (neck and shoulder muscles that are related to stress).Concept developed for the Thailand International Furniture Fair Design Competition.

First we investigated which traditional crafts were more frequently used in Thailand. We concluded that this country has a rich history of wood carvings and mother of pearl inlays, which served as the basis for defining this object. The shape of the neck/head support was defined by the user's body and by the shape of local traditional rooftops. This element is made of rattan, a local natural material.

Inspiration

The various boards are composed of wood agglomerate, made from waste wood from other productions, which are veneered and treated to resist water. Another reason for choosing this material is its attractive natural appearance and its warmer touch, preventing chills. To unite the various wood boards, NeBoMa has a metal hoop decorated with traditional Thai patterns in mother of pearl making it more eye appealing. The water pressure can be controlled by a handle, which has a screen in the center to control water temperature and level, the water jets intensity and head massage vibrations.

The target we defined is composed of university students and research groups. The goal was to develop a product to enable easy sharing of information among work groups with a great mobility without needing to worry about the battery. It is intended to reduce physical barriers to facilitate the development of projects in real time where the group members may be in different parts of the globe.

Company specialized in digital photo frames, it launched a product line to connect/share all music, videos and photos anywhere in your house. In our analysis, this company was competing in a highly saturated and competitive market, which posed a real threat to the company. That is why we placed our efforts in defining a new market with a greater business potential and lower risk.

This concept device allows to work in group projects in real time, remotely. It has a flexible screen made of e-paper thus allowing a large screen with a minimum energy consumption. It is possible to work with it for 8/12h without recharging. Nanotechnology allows to recharge the battery in about 10 minutes.

Sense appealing: all shapes, colors, materials and textures are attractive to the touch. The front of the room is fully glazed to enjoy the landscape. All spaces are adapted for people with disabilities (eg. wheelchair users).Mono materials were selected for easy recycling, lightweight or alternative materials to reduce the ship's consumption (fuel or electricity). An aluminum profile called V3 was developed to enable the construction of the entire quarter, dramatically reducing components/cost per room.Touch screens allows you to watch TV or movies, and allows full access to all services of the ship for any orders or reservations.

How to create a small room adaptable to different types of passengers without appearing small? That gives a feeling of lightness and elegance? How to create an alternative environment that is not a replica of a traditional hotel? The starting point consisted in the comments and videos of users of these type of boats, which reported problems such as: the rooms closest to the engine room were very noisy. The air conditioning is insufficient for the hottest days where passengers were forced to leave the door open for fresh air.It was also inspired by Tron Legacy, a futuristic movie where everything seemed interconnected.

Development of a river transport system, capable of transporting visitors under Cruise regime, comfortably and safe with minimal environmental impact. Using Douro Azul's company fleet as reference. This was a team project (about 20 people involved) where I was responsible for developing the Classic cabins (or second class rooms) where space is limited.

What this is

Holistic vending concept that enhances socialization between users, and encourages healthy eating habits. It allows the interaction between multiple users through cylindrical touch screens in specific contexts of use (office environments, educational institutions, schools). It seeks to respond to a product range deficit that doesn't take into account the nutritional needs of each target. This concept aims to be profitable, with a proactive attitude towards society and the environment.

Reshape, redefine, innovate an industry (vending). It is intended to take advantage of the enormous potential of the Internet and wireless systems, by connecting the vending company with its replacement employees (via a handheld device | Link) and the vending machines themselves. This allows custom products/menus for each point of sale to ensure their suitability; and manage, in real time, all the machine operations. This allows to dramatically reduce costs and the environmental impact caused by travels and wasted products. All of this allows consumers to have a better lifestyle without much effort.

Objective

This concept allows individual or group interactions, and it offers products adapted to different dietary needs, designed by nutritionists and cooks who ensure their quality. Consumers are identified by client card, which helps balance their diet by providing individualized deals that best suit this purpose. The color symbolism and space conception applied (with the application of tables, chairs, mirrors, televisions) allows you to create an attractive environment and conveys the idea that the vending operator cares about its customers. This concept also allows prepaid custom orders to better fit his personal taste, allowing constant consumer insights.

Symbology of the color gold: the third and final color of this concept, is the less frequent, due to its visual weight and associated symbologies. The color yellow (the color we most relate to gold) is associated with friendliness and optimism. It's a color that radiates and inspires, just like the Sun. In Asia, this color is a synonym of happiness, wisdom and harmony.

Symbology of the color orange: color associated with the feminine, the exotic, and good taste. The diverse experiences of consumers with the orange color (for example a tasty and fresh orange juice) tend to create a sensation in the subconscious that what is orange is tasty. Energetic and healthy people tend to be attracted by the color orange, as this is a strong color, appealing and lush. Orange is the ideal color of this concept.

Symbology of the color white: associated with truth, goodness and the search for the ideal. The white color is related to the (interior) purity and (outer) clean, where what must be hygienic is white.
