Amazon Rainforest is on Fire By: Charles Follosco The Amazon is the world’s largest rainforest and home to millions of species. The Amaz- on rainforest is also known as the “Lungs of the planet,” because it alone gives more than 20% of our oxygen in the world. It is very important for us to care for our planet’s “lungs” which are choking right now. Farmers have used small fires to clear tiny sections of rainforest for generations, and for the past decade regulations actually reduced the number of fires. But industrial logging, fragmentation, and agricultural activities have changed since Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro reduced regulations and rules protecting the Amazon. These fires in the Amazon rainforest have the highest record since 2013 and it’s up by 85% from last year alone. There are so many fires that are burning that the smoke can be seen from outer space. Each one of us have the same questions which are: what caused this and how will it affect our planet? There are actually two sides about what caused the Amazon fire. First, Brazil’s environmental minister, Ricardo Salles, posted on Twitter that it was caused by dry weather, wind, and heat. However, CNN meteorologist Haley Brink said the fires are “definitely human-induced [made].” The dry season could be the reason why the fire spread so quickly throughout much of the Amazon rainforest. But the start of the fire seems to be the result of humans; either they did it on purpose or by accident. Everyone here on planet Earth benefits from the health of the Amazon. Amazon trees take carbon dioxide and release oxygen. The Amazon rainforest has a huge role to play on Earth which is to pull planet-warming greenhouse gases. Bolsonaro is trying to kill the fire by deploying the military to help fight the fires. He sent 44,000 troops into 6 countries. All firefighters in different countries are teaming up to kill the fires. All of us should protect our Mother Earth by recycling, saving water, and planting more trees. Let’s love our Mother Earth, or else it will not last long.

Nicki Minaj Retires By: Frances Apachito The rapper and singer Onika Tanya Maraj (born December 8, 1982), known professionally as Nicki Minaj, has tweeted that she has made the decision to retire and ‘have my family.’ Nicki nodded to her followers saying, “ Keep reppin’ me. Do it ‘til da death of me.” Many rappers responded to Nicki’s retirement. They seem not too happy about it. American rapper/singer 50 Cent seemed genuinely sympathetic towards her retire- ment. He also said she reached a certain level of success and lastly added, “I don’t want Nicki to retire; just take a break.” Nicki Minaj may have once had “Barbie Dreams” but now it’s time for her to set sights on something else. Another American rapper Bhad Bhabie talks badly about Nicki’s retirement and calls her “salty.” Before giving her assessment of Nicki’s retirement, she said, “Me and Cardi got y’all,” but also included that we have to give Nicki props. She suggested that Nicki didn’t write her own bars and is continuing to criticize the “Barbie Dream” rapper. Although many people aren’t happy with her retirement, many other Tweeters wished Nicki good luck in life. They also added that Nicki will still be their favorite American rapper/singer/songwriter. There’s always a time in life where you decide to do something different and for the better. As fans of Nicki, we should be happy with her decision and hope life will treat her right with her and her fiancé. Especially if they plan to start a family soon.

Where Pride Meets Prejudice By:Caleb Secatero On August 30th, 2019 the perfume Christian Dior which is owned by Louis Vuitton SE (LVMH) made an ad campaign that has been criticized on social media. They’ve been profiting off of Native American cultural imagery. They had worked with the actor Johnny Depp. The campaign featured him for Dior’s “Sauvage” fragrance. The brand tweeted that the campaign is “An authentic journey deep into the Native American soul in a sacred, founding, and secular territory.” Three years ago, the brand faced backlash during another campaign with Johnny Depp for “Sauvage” after Depp was accused for domestic violence by his ex-wife Amber Heard. Dior started posting sneak-peeks on videos and photos before the film was released. The film was released on September 1st. Soon after, the company began receiving criticism on Twitter and Facebook. CNBC asked for comments and Dior sent a press release from a non-profit group called the Americans for Indian Opportunities (AIO). They refer to themselves as a group who supports the rights for indigenous peoples. They made a music video for the fragrance and it provides advice on Native American imagery. Johnny Depp provided a statement for the release of the fragrance. Depp said, “There was need for authenticity and respect for the land and the nations that allowed us to shoot there. From the choice of locations, wardrobe making, right down to casting and set designs, AIO was involved.” Dior did not provide a statement responding to the criticism of the campaign. In my opinion, I’m undecided how to feel about this. They had some real Native Americans on the set of the ad and they thought that it was okay. Personally, I wouldn’t buy expensive cologne. The French word “Sauvage” means a person who is considered to be “unmannered or rude.” The Native American people are upset with the word “Sauvage.” The people feel that the word is offensive because people use to call Natives “savages.” They shouldn’t call it “Sauvage;” they could have called it any other name. Native Americans shouldn’t be associated with the fragrance because of the name “Sauvage.”

Retirement for Andrew Luck By: Hunter Apachito On a shocking Saturday night, Indianapolis Colts quarter back Andrew Luck announced his retirement from the NFL, stating that constant injuries has taken his love for the game away. Luck turned 30 on Sept- ember 12; he is still young but can’t handle the injuries. “This is not an easy decision; it’s the hardest decision of my life. But it is the right decision for me,” states Luck. Luck isn’t the first player nor the last to walk away from football in what should have been his prime, but his decision is already making other players think about their profession. Some players that are playing in the NFL have similar situation as Luck; struggling through endless injuries. Such one player is Rob Gronk- owski. Gronk has had major and multiple surgeries on his forearm, back, and knee these past several years. Gronk has missed 24 regular-season games the past 5 seasons because of injuries. “I can relate to Andrew Luck, where he is,” Gronkowski admits. “I’ve been there, and it’s good to see that he wants to take care of himself. He said he wasn’t really himself anymore and I can relate to that in many ways.” The reason why the NFL players get paid a lot is because they risk having physical and mental health issues. Injuries are the biggest risks to the financial security of an NFL player; many of them do not have the luxury of guaranteed money in their contracts. NFL players walk away from millions of money due to the causes of ongoing injuries.

Volleyball Time!!! By: Calista Vicente The lady Cougars volleyball team has so much practice and work to do this season. Their goal is to win every game and do their very best. The upcoming freshmen are excited to explore the life of high school volleyball. Koolonna Apachito says she “feels super excited, and has accomplished a lot in three years.” She also loves “Right- side hitter, because it gives me more power.” Before entering a gym she stays “concentrated.” Koolonna has numerous goals like: im- proving her skills, winning every game, and becoming a “better hitter.” After I interviewed Koolonna, I went ahead and asked coach Archuleta some questions. “This is my fourth season being coach in Alamo, and my seventh season overall.” I asked about some of his goals for this year’s volleyball team. His response was for the girls to be more “open-minded about learning new offenses” and “become district champs and/or qualifies for state.” Coach Archuleta has set up new drills/practices for the volleyball girls to “gain speed, be competitive, [improve] footwork, and make sure our setters can hit her targets.” I asked Archuleta when he and the girls made it to the state playoffs. His response was “My teams made it to state in each of the first four years I coached, including being state runner-up in 2015 at Springer. In 2016, Alamo volleyball made state for the first time in school history.” The final question was what is the main things a team needs in order to have a winning season. He responded, “Passion, desire, and focus.” My favorite player use to say that “The size of your success is measured by the strength of your desire.” With a win/loss record at 4-4, I think the varsity Cougars are doing an amazing job. They have had some mistakes, but eventually they’ll make it up. They need to be more consistent, and they need to play 100% through their entire sets. But overall, the girls are good at moving and running towards the ball. Good luck to all the players and coaches! Have an outstanding season!

Will the new Joker be a Success? By: Elena Apachito Joker is a 2019 American psychological brain-twister film directed by Todd Phillips. The movie releases on October 4, 2019. It is based on DC comic characters and the film stars Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. The movie is about a failed comedian named Arthur Fleck who unexpectedly came upon violent thugs while wandering the streets of Gotham City as he was dressed like a clown. He felt neglected by society, so Fleck begins to spiral down into a path of mischievous behavior. His psychopathic madness created an alter-ego known as the Joker which transformed him into a villainous mastermind. If this is the one and only film featuring Phoenix’s Joker, we should be grateful to have it. Joker is one of the true masterpieces of all movies. The Joker is, unquestionably, one of the most despicable characters of all comics. It’s going to be fascinating to see if Todd Phillips and Warner Brothers are able to pull this off from a quality standpoint. This is easily one of the most fascinating comic book movies coming our way this year, if not ever. With all of the Jokers out there, will audiences embrace it?

Volume 2, Edition 4 Biniʼantʼą́ą́tsoh (August) 2019 Page 5 Alamo Navajo Cross Country Robert Monte “It Does Not Matter How Slowly You, Go as Long as You Don’t Stop”

The cross country team’s first meet in Tohachi was a success. The varsity boys didn’t do so well, but it’s only the beginning. Of course the boys tried but we all agreed that the last part of the course was hard. I asked senior runner Robert Baca how was his first meet, Robert stated that he did badly and knows that he could’ve done better. Rehoboth went well for Robert Baca as he clocked in at 19:31.5h and placed 5th overall in the boy’s small school division. The varsity boys placed 7th as a team out of 9 schools in our division. For the girls Kennette Eriacho placed 26th and Keona Secatero placed 40th overall. This meet went well. It started in the early morning, but it wasn’t too hot or too cold, it was just the right temperature. Jemez Valley meet was a good and challenging meet. The course was very challenging with it having three big hills. This had me exhausted to where I almost collapsed at the finish line. Robert Baca did great at this meet, he placed 7th with honors and received a medal. 8th grade runner Jacob Apache placed 3rd overall in the middle school boys division. Congratulate these two runners for placing in the top 10! The varsity boys as a team are okay. Varsity girls don’t have enough runners to be counted as a team, as well as the junior high girls. The junior high boys have a big team, the biggest team yet that I know of. Wendell states that varsity boys have a chance qualifying as a team and going to state. We just need a 4th and 5th runner. The varsity boys are still a young team, only 2 runners are seniors this year, so I know that we can do it. For the varsity girls, since there’s no team, the girls each need to qualify individually at districts. And all three girls can do it. So let’s encourage or cross country team that they can do it. Let them know they can! MTV Video Music Awards By: Sage Baca The MTV Video Music Awards was held on August 26, 2019 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Volume 2, Edition 4 Biniʼantʼą́ą́tsoh (September) 2019 Page 7 President Trump Visits Rio Rancho By: Tamika Herrera President Donald J. Trump came to Rio Rancho, New Mexico on September 16. Trump lost by eight percent of the Hispanic voters in the 2016 presidential election. As soon as Trump got elected President he wanted to build a wall around Mexico. Because he is against Hispanic migrants coming into the U.S. and promises to build a wall to keep them out, Hilary Clinton won New Mexico’s five electoral votes in 2016. But thousands of New Mexicans went to Rio Rancho just to see the president they love. Trump said on stage at Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, “We think we are really going to change this State and make it a Republican State.’’ Also in 2016 Trump tried visiting Albuquerque, New Mexico but protesters rioted and Trump left New Mexico. Three years later he visited Rio Rancho and gave a speech. He wants the Hispanics to “love’’ him. Trump also said he wants to “make America great again.” Trump also said that it was his first time staying in the “Land of Enchantment” for over twenty-four hours. Some of the Mexicans/Latino’s understand why President Trump wants to build the wall around Mexico. The reason is because Mexicans are bringing drugs and other illegal stuff into the U.S. But yet some Latina and Latino’s don’t want to re-vote him for president again. Some New Mexicans don’t want a wall around Mexico. Trump will be coming back to Land of Enchantment in 2020 during his presidential campaign.

Area 51 Raid is a Phenomenal Internet Sensation By: Kenyon Apachito On July 29th, 2019, early in the morning at 2:00 a.m., a 21-year-old college student named Matty Roberts was bored out of his mind. Until a spark of motivational movement sizzled in his brain, and it quickly blazed into a bonfire. Roberts then jumped onto Facebook and created an event that soon became an Internet phenomenon. Roberts named this Facebook event, “Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us,” followed by a schedule that dated the time of raid, September 20, 2019. Roberts’ controversial joke went viral like Naruto’s shadow clone jutsu in a matter of days. Weeks later, Area 51 memes began to abrupt in social media apps; such as Facebook, Instagram, and Reddit. Like the speed of a UFO, Area 51 memes began to “invade” peoples’ newsfeeds. Area 51 (also known as Homey Airport [KXTA] or Groom Lake) is a highly classified United States Air Force facility that is located in Nevada. According to our U.S. government, this facility is an open training range used to test experimental aircraft and weapons. Despite the government’s statement, conspiracy theorists have believed that Area 51 is a top secret base being used for many purposes; to hide black project weapons (Aurora Program, energetic weapons, and SDI), manufacture higher powers of technology (such as teleportation, time-travel, and weather control), hold secret orders of organizations (such as Majestic 12 and extraterrestrial meetings), or discretely salvage the remains of the historically famous crash site in Roswell, New Mexico, of 1947. Enough of the Area 51 background, let’s “see them aliens.” On July 15th, Matty Roberts has received a severe warning. The warning was sent from a former U.S. Air Force spokesman. He stated that the training range will have the orders to use armed force to stop them by any means. Roberts then informed that the raid was only a joke, and he didn’t have intentions for it to be taken seriously. Towards the closing of the raid schedule, the event had abducted about 3.5 million people who were going and interested. There were two arrests made a week before the raid. Two Dutch YouTubers were encountered three miles after entering the front gates. An ironic turn of events happened on the day of the raid. Only 40 people were at the front gates of the Area 51 early at 3:00 a.m. A total of five arrests were made (including the Dutch YouTubers). Luckily, Roberts had created two new events called “Alienstock” and “Storm Area 51 Base Camp”, which were music festivals. “Alienstock” was filled with a total amount of 1,500 people. “Storm Area 51 Basecamp” was dispersed by the Air Force. No aliens were rescued during this attempt. So the government can allegedly keep their secrets hidden.

“Washed King” By: Calista Vicente LeBron James is having a wonderful off-season as he plans on what to do for the Los Angeles Lakers. LeBron took some time off to be with his friends and family, but also to work out and be stronger for next season. James missed seventeen games due to his injury, which had led to a poor record and made the King look bad. After a while people thought LeBron James was too old to be playing basketball like he used to, but that’s not going to stop him from playing basketball. At the age of 35 he called himself a “Washed King,” which people go by now because he is old. James recently received zero votes for the best player in the NBA who would lose and not become champion. The 3-time champion has to work to prove all his doubters wrong this upcoming season and show them what he’s still capable of doing. James cannot wait for the first tip-off and show what he loves doing the most. LeBron James is loved by so many people; he can’t let them down because they are counting on him to be the best player of the year so he would get a better chance of being selected as champion. Many people want good action and memories, so when he finally retires those memories would forever be there to cherish. So, to all of the Lakers fans, watch every game to see what James prepared during his offseason. Good luck to all the NBA players, coaches, and teams. 2019 Alamo Navajo Football Highlights By: Lachelle Apachito It was looking like our 2019 Alamo Navajo football team was leading off to a good start. On August 31st Alamo Navajo won against Pine Hill with the score of 30-6.Kash Big’s proud moment of that game was he played his heart out on the field. Duran’s proud moment of the game was the end because they had won. Kash and Duran also said they won this game by “Executing every play we made and played as a team.” On the field Kash’s position is Left Guard and Duran’s position is Tail Back. This season Kash and Duran want to work on blocking the running back to win more games. On September 6, 2019 our Alamo Navajo football team played against Navajo Pine and came out with a tough lose with the score of 22-12. After their first loss against Navajo Pine, they wanted to work on going to practice more and give a hundred percent every time they practice and to take practice seriously. Also from this game Senior Kash Big says,” I learned to not give up and to keep on fighting to the end of the game.” Junior Duran Cheney says, “I learned that if people fool around at practice its going to show during game time.” This lose would go on to motivate the team by executing every play they do and give it their all. On September 21, 2019 our Alamo Navajo football team came out with a win against Shiprock Northwest with the score of 50-6. The offense did great. Duran got the most touchdowns with four. Othan, Kenyon, and Bravin all scored touchdowns, too. Senior Othan Abeyta got 4 sacks that afternoon. Sophomore Armen is our kicker but he kicked too low. The whole football team played a good defense. Come support our football team at our next football game against Magdalena on October 10, 2019.
